We live in times of individual, sociocultural and planetary crisis, exacerbated by rising divisions between people. How have humans historically navigated such times of crisis? Yes, we've organized, taken action, and responded as we've been called to respond. But we have also deepened our connection to the greater cosmos, through songs and poems and rituals of devotion, through crying out to a beloved universe whose workings remain a mystery but to whom we feel intimately and inextricably connected. In times when we are raw and situations are precarious, many poets tell us, the breath of life is closer than ever. So we have sung aloud to source, and honored the emotional intricacies of our relationship with a beloved world whose turnings can be maddening, painful and often beyond our control. Singing to the beloved in this way isn't about blissing out and bypassing, it's about finding a practice that honors the depth and emotional texture of our experience of a paradoxical world and that matches the intensity of the times we're living in. For the wounds of these times cannot simply be addressed through rational analysis and diagnosis, nor can they be addressed only with the short-burning flame of outrage. We need a deeper resourcing.  At a time of a profound pan-societal longing for meaning and sacredness, connecting to the cosmos as beloved and seeing the sacred in every phase of the beloved's waves has deep implications for how we resource and replenish ourselves, how we align our movements to the actual ebbs and flows of the natural world, and how we begin to heal the divided sociocultural space between us. Featuring a conversation with Dr. Omid Safi and music by Leah Song, Chloe Smith, Duncan Wickel, Jeunae Elita, Marya Stark, Sidibe, Serena Bixby, Forest Sun, Haley Young and others, this episode of The Emerald podcast encourages us to pause for a moment in the midst of all the great world-turning events and remember and connect to the living, breathing, source of it all. Just... for a moment.Support the show

In February of 2024, after a year of touring the country, the musical group Rising Appalachia, an ensemble that marries American folk music with a wide array of world influences, made an announcement that might have been surprising only to those who don't know them well. Sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith, who created Rising Appalachia over 15 years ago, had decided to take a sabbatical year, though they would honor the concerts already on the books in 2024. Longtime Rising Appalachia fans have been supportive because they know this is a band that has never taken shortcuts in how they manage their artistry and their lives. Since early on in their careers, Leah and Chloe have been advocates for and practitioners of the slow music movement, an ethos of touring and music-making that places sustainability, local engagement and creative control at the heart of their business. The current sabbatical is the latest tool in their slow music toolbox.Yet though last year's tour was hugely successful and they've just released an album titled “Folk and Anchor,” Chloe and Leah's decision was undeniably gutsy and far from conventional in the music industry. In this interview, the sisters, speaking from their homes in the North Carolina mountains, discuss why this was the right time for a yearlong break, how they prepared for it and the ways in which they and their bandmates keep the slow music ethos at the heart of their artistic practice.https://www.risingappalachia.com/tourhttps://www.risingappalachia.com/

In times of global upheaval, ecological destruction, and societal inequity, justice can seem very far away. Justice in the modern world is often viewed as a contract, an agreement forged between human beings rather than something inherent to the natural world. And yet, for many cultures and traditions, justice is seen as a living presence, as the actual dynamic flow of cause and effect that serves to keep a larger natural balance. Tradition after tradition speaks of the larger law of the cosmos and of the human role in aligning to it.  At a time when people are experiencing deep grief and anxiety over the fate of the planet, understanding and reconnecting to a living vision of justice can help provide not only a sense of somatic anchor, but a way forward that asks us to align to something both immediate and ultimate. This vision of living justice asks us to move away from the language of abstract 'justification' towards a more palpable understanding of cause and effect, of excess and repercussion, of balance and flow. Even as it asks us to be awake to the suffering of the world and take action to help remedy its imbalances, it also provokes us to find this living flow within ourselves, to go deep into the roots of cycles of vengeance and retribution in our own hearts.  At once a lament over the sorry state of human justice, a cry out to a greater justice, and a deep inquiry into justice as a living force, this episode draws on a range of voices from activists and elders from diverse traditions. Joining for this episode are author and Islamic scholar Dr. Omid Safi, CNN commentator and activist Van Jones, former Tibetan political prisoner Ngawang Sangdrol, author and death row inmate Jarvis Jay Masters, Palestinian-American activist Nadia Irshaid Gilbert, Aboriginal Nyoongar Elder Noel Nannup, and author and Native American activist Jose Barreiro. There is... a sound. Many, through the ages, have heard it. It echoes in the world all around us, it reverberates in songs of joy and lament, it vibrates in the names of the gods and goddesses themselves. Across the world, tradition after tradition describes a sound that is the source of all sound, a sound that can be heard if we practice attuning ourselves to it. So the Indian yogi follows the sound OM to its source, the Brazilian Umbanda practitioner rides a thread of vibration to the great vibration, and the Gay'Wu group of Australian Aboriginal women speak of how sound transports the singer to their homeland, to the place where the 'time is now.' To access this sound isn't frivolous, it serves to replenish and renew our connection to the world around us, to reinvigorate relationships with land, with community, and with the harmonic laws of creation. So the role of the bard — the musical seer — has always been to listen for this sound, to dissolve into it, and to return laden with songs that reinvigorate natural relationships. Song, in this sense, reconnects us to and replenishes the law of the land, and in a time of fracture, listening for this sound and singing back to it in reverence is more important than ever. Anchored by an interview with musician Trevor Hall, and featuring original music from Leah Song and Chloe Smith and traditional Baul devotional singing from Sri Parvathy Baul, this episode is a love song to sound itself. Sisters Leah Song & Chloe Smith grew up in Urban Atlanta, they also lived in New Orleans and outside of Asheville. The pair are deeply rooted in their Southern identity as evidenced in their band, Rising Appalachia. Although their parents are not professional musicians, music was a constant part of the family. Their parents were dedicated students of early Appalachian music. The sisters played music everyday, were classically trained, attended fiddle camps and music festivals among other musical activities. The sisters developed their own taste in Atlanta's 90s rap underground scene. There was a time when the two didn't want anything to do with their parents' music, however, eventually they came back to it and decided to pursue Appalachian music thanks to some time spent away living in Mexico.Aside from music, activism and purpose remain very important to Rising Appalachia. Leah's idea for "The Slow Music Movement" came out of the desire to sustain the troubadour lifestyle over participating in the traditional touring musician industrial complex. While touring, the band requests local food in their rider, invite tabling from non-profits, and work to create relationships with the local community. They also will seek out alternative methods of transportation: trains or smaller vehicles that use non-fossil fuels. Rising Appalachia has been known to do hub shows where they stay for a few days and create relationships with the community. This past July, they hosted Catalyst, their first annual music art and education festival in Asheville. Leah and I dug into how being musicians helped them create a space where artists felt welcome and taken care of. We also talk about Chloe's new baby and how touring might be looking different this fall. Freya has become consumed by the pressures of social media and is suffering a mental health crisis. The story was developed and co-authored by Kate and Dominic Savage. Kate talks to Emma about the issues examined in the film and working with her daughter. This year the Royal Institute Christmas Lectures will be given by Professor Dame Sue Black; one of the world's leading forensic investigators. She is currently the President of St Johns College Oxford, but her previous achievements include heading the British Forensic Team in Kosovo, identifying victims from the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, and convicting Scotland's largest paedophile ring. In the lectures she will share the real-life scientific detective process that she uses to identify both the dead and the living. She tells Emma Barnett how she will be separating crime fiction from fact using examples from her own casebook. Conservative MP Chloe Smith is one of a number of parliamentarians who have already announced they won't be standing at the next General Election in two years time. Aged only 40 she has served in a range of ministerial positions including her last post when she made it to the cabinet as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions albeit for only seven weeks during Liz Truss's brief tenure as Prime Minister. This combination – chicken, mushrooms, tarragon, cream – is a classic in the French regional repertoire. It may seem dangerous with the inclusion of both butter and cream but they are used in modest quantities and add lusciousness. I have suggested using chicken marylands. You might prefer to buy thighs, purchased with the bone in and the skin on. This dish is not suitable for breast portions as it needs to cook for quite a long time to develop the best flavour. The more muscular sections respond well to longer cooking. I like to serve this with a vegetable puree or maybe firm or soft polenta. Mashed potato is always a winner. Do not omit the final garnish of freshly chopped French tarragon. Its perfume brilliantly reinforces the flavour of the tarragon in the sauce.Stephanie Alexander's new cookbook. Photo: PenguinINGREDIENTS4 free-range chicken marylands, skin on or 8 large chicken thighs, bone in, skin on2 tbsp plain flour1 tsp sea salt1 tsp sweet paprika1 tbsp chopped French tarragon2 tbsp ghee or clarified butter1 onion, finely chopped3 garlic cloves, finely chopped100ml tarragon vinegar or verjuice200ml golden chicken stock (see recipe below)20g unsalted butter250g Swiss brown button mushrooms, halved if not smallfreshly ground black pepper150ml creamGarnish2 tsp coarsely chopped flat-leaf parsley1 tbsp coarsely chopped French tarragonMETHODPreheat the oven to 160C fan-forced (180C conventional). If using chicken marylands, I chop off the knobby end of the leg bone to save space in my casserole. Mix the flour, salt, paprika and tarragon in a bowl and thoroughly coat each piece of chicken with this mixture. Shake each piece of floured chicken well and transfer to a tray.Select a heavy-based flameproof casserole that will hold all the chicken in one layer and that has a lid. Heat the ghee or clarified butter in it over medium heat. When it has just started to sizzle put the chicken pieces into the pan skin-side down and adjust the heat so that there is a sizzle but nothing more than that. You are aiming for well-browned pieces. Do not shake or prod. Check after 6 minutes. If the skin is looking golden brown, turn the chicken and cook for a further 3-4 minutes. Now remove the chicken pieces to the tray or a plate.Add the onion and garlic to the pan, stirring to mix, then lower the heat and cook for a full 5 minutes, stirring once or twice. The onion must be very soft. Raise the heat to high and tip in the tarragon vinegar or verjuice. Let it bubble up and almost entirely evaporate. Then add the stock and bring the pan back to a simmer. Stir and simmer for a few minutes, then return the chicken pieces to the pan. Press a crumpled piece of baking paper down over the chicken (this helps retain moisture) and put on the lid. Transfer the casserole to the oven for 45 minutes if using thighs only or 55 minutes to 1 hour if using marylands. Remove the casserole from the oven and test that the chicken pieces are tender. A skewer should slip through the thickest part of the chicken without resistance. While the chicken is cooking heat the butter over medium heat in a heavy-based frying pan that has a lid and tip in the mushrooms. Toss to coat with the butter, then grind on some pepper, cover and cook over medium heat for 4 minutes. Uncover and pour in the cream, then raise the heat to high and bring to a boil, stirring once or twice. The cream should bubble up and start to reduce. Turn off the heat and set the pan aside.Tip the mushroom and cream sauce onto the chicken once it tests tender, then give the casserole a shake and a stir to mix. Place the casserole over medium heat for about 5 minutes to reduce the sauce further. The aim is for a rich, creamy, not-too-liquid sauce. Taste for salt and pepper and adjust if necessary. Scatter half of the garnish over the chicken. Serve on warmed plates, scattering each portion with the remaining herbs.Prepare ahead The dish (excluding the mushroom and cream sauce) can be prepared several hours or even a day ahead and refrigerated. Bring the chicken casserole back to bubbling in the oven at 160C fan-forced (180C conventional) for maybe 30 minutes. Make the mushroom and cream sauce while the chicken is reheating. Transfer the casserole to the stovetop and add the sauce. Reduce the sauce and add the garnish as described.Serves 4

My guest on this episode of Nobody’s Safe w/Brady Laber is the all-time leading scorer at Thomas More University Madison Temple. Madison grew up in Anderson Township which is on the Eastside of Cincinnati so I started by asking her a fun but difficult question. I asked her to compare the Eastside to the Westside since she made a lot of friends in college from the Westside. We talk about her start playing basketball being a teammate of her older sister Haley on a team that was coached by her mom Ceci who played collegiately at Belmont University. Madison played in high for head coach Chris Careltti at Anderson High School. Her older sister Haley also played with Madison for two seasons. The Redskins won the ECC regular season title as Madison was Player of the Year in the league, leading the conference in scoring and rebounding. Unfortunately she tears her ACL just before the playoffs are to begin that sophomore season and is out for the remainder of the year. After a difficult and grueling rehab process she returns for her junior season. She averaging a double-double but again late in the season she suffers an ACL tear in her other knee. Madison makes it back in time for her senior year where she wins her second ECC Player of the Year award leading the Redskins to another conference championship. She had plenty of college scholarship offers but her options became limited after two major knee injuries. She wasn’t even sure if she wanted to play in college until Thomas More University head coach Jeff Hans decides not to give up on her. Madison commits late in the process to the Saints and the rest is history. In her four years at Thomas More, Madison wins two national championships and becomes the program’s all-time leading scorer. She also is tops on the all-time list for assist, field goals and free throws. In 2019, she is named the NCAA D-III National Player of Year. We talk about playing for Coach Hans, her teammates and the memories made during those deep tournament runs. Today Madison is working a full-time job for a financial institution and coaching high school basketball. She is currently an assistant coach at West Clermont High School under head coach Jeff Click. My guest on this episode of Nobody’s Safe w/Brady Laber is former NKU basketball great Tyler Sharpe. Tyler is from Mount Washington, Kentucky and was on the varsity basketball team at Bullitt East High School for five seasons. Tony Barr was the head coach of the Chargers and brought Tyler up to the varsity to lean from upperclassmen Derek Willis, Rusty Troutman, Trey Rakes and Elliott Young. Tyler was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in middle school and he describes how its effected him and his journey living with this medical condition. Tyler is part of a great class at Bullitt East that takes over as sophomores. He becomes the leading scorer for the Chargers and Bob Blackburn comes out of retirement to take over as head coach. Tyler also talks about Ernest “June Bug” Rakes who was an assistant coach and his son Bailey is one of Tyler’s best friends growing up. Tyler talks about the recruiting process which was not very good for him as he finds himself continually being overlooked for scholarship opportunities. After a long and winding road he decides to attend the University of Louisville as a preferred walk-on. After a season playing very sparingly for the Cardinals (2016-17) he decides that he wants to explore other avenues in hopes for a change at more playing time. One of his former AAU teammates Mason Faulkner directs him toward NKU where again he would have to be a walk-on. Head coach John Brannen explained that the roster is loaded coming off a Horizon League championship team but he would earn his way into playing time if he put in the work. Although things are rough in the beginning, Tyler starts to see time as a role player mostly becasue of his defense. He eventually becomes a solid rotation player that is a threat to make three-point shots on the offensive end of the floor. NKU earns a number-one seed in the Horizon League tournament but losses in the first round to Cleveland State. However, the Norse are invited to play in the NIT and are match with Tyler’s former team the Louisville Cardinals. Tyler returns for his junior season and starts 32 out of 35 games for a Norse team that wins the Horizon League tournament. He talks in depth about the game winning shot Drew McDonald hits to beat the buzzer against Oakland winner the semifinal game. NKU qualifies for the NCAA tournament and Tyler talks about the selection process and the lead-up to that first round game against Texas Tech. After the year head coach John Brannen leaves for the University of Cincinnati and he is replaced by Darin Horn. Tyler talks about the process of Brannen leaving and Horn taking over for his senior year. Senior year was an up-and-down year for the Norse becasue of injuries to key players Jalen Tate and Dantez Walton. Tyler is also injured at times but somehow finds a way to play through it. By February the full compliment of players are back in time for NKU to win another Horizon League tournament championship. Unfortunately. the NCAA tournament is canceled due to COVID-19 and that is how Tyler’s career comes to an end. But that is not the end of the story. Tyler applies to for a waiver to NCAA to get the year of eligibility back from his time at Louisville where he player just 11 minutes total as a walk-on. He goes into detail about the process and the results which is disappointing to say the least. As for now, Tyler is at peace with his career although disappointed as how it came to an end. He talks about his future plans which includes a possible professional basketball career, his engagement to former NKU soccer player Samantha Duwel (https://nkunorse.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/samantha-duwel/3989) and starting his work career working for Solgen Energy. Tyler is doing a giveaway involving his NKU game-used shoes and some of this practice gear. The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

This week on the Show On The Road, a conversation with Chloe Smith of Rising Appalachia. In 2005 she founded this unique partnership with her sister Leah after their relentless world travels finally intersected in southern Mexico, where Leah had started mastering the banjo. Growing up in a musical family of traditional string-band players and contra-dance leaders near Atlanta, Rising Appalachia's latest release, Leylines, mixes the rustic front porch sound of their childhood family jam sessions with a neon-tinted modern backbeat of dancehall electronics and mystical protest. That could have felt incongruous, but somehow these influences mix beautifully with their ethereal, intertwined vocals and darting fiddle-and-banjo runs. While our host, Z. Lupetin, was able to catch up with Chloe for this cross-country conversation, Leah has been marooned in Costa Rica since the world shut down in March and continues to work from there. The sisters and their talented six-piece band have become a beloved fixture at music festivals throughout the United States, but have also played stages in Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Italy, Hungary, Bulgaria, The Czech Republic, Ireland, Scotland, and more.  Always looking to challenge the traditional carbon-hungry touring routine, Leah dubbed their group as part of a growing “slow music movement”, and in this episode, Z. talks with Chloe about the time they toured remote Canadian farming islands via sailboat. It's that kind of intimate and innovative traveling that Chloe would like to return to whenever the COVID-19 shutdown lifts in the coming years. Stick around to the end of the episode for an acoustic version of “Harmonize” from Leylines, and check out Rising Appalachia's newest single “Pulse,” featuring Dirtwire.

Biko Casini is the percussionist with my favorite music group, Rising Appalachia. Biko turned me on to The Music Lesson book by Victor Wooten and that changed my life and led to the founding of the Planetary Gigs Society. Biko is a profound player and spiritual thinker. Biko grew up in an intentional community outside Nashville, where he lives now, and he says it gives him the space to dream about what is possible when humans come together, sharing responsibility of stewarding the land. Biko’s father played guitar – all the time, many different songs, from many different countries and in many languages, like a troubadour. When Biko was 15, his brother carved him drumsticks and that started his lifelong craft as a drummer and percussionist. Through several interactions and his travels, he realized that for him music was a way to be of service rather than strive simply for personal success, and his quest has been to find a place or situation where music could be a key to unlocking healing energy. He has found that with Rising Appalachia, which is like a spiritual community because they are all working on similar goals. So many musicians have been funneled and co-opted by the music industry to serve the profit motive. Rising Appalachia focuses on the experience and the wild magic of music. “Music has given me more than anything else in my life, but it has also taken more than anything else,” he says. Biko is focused on an intention to create cultural and ecological learning and rejuvenation centers, with music being a huge part of that. He says concerts and festivals can provide energy for restoring ecology. Arts and creativity, he says, should feed the ecological restoration of the world and cultural renewal, which is the great work of our time. Biko says we all carry cultural trauma and music’s job is to connect us to what’s real inside of ourselves and then to help us be able to restore the external ecology. This also seems to me to be very much consistent with the music and message of Rising Appalachia, led by sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith, and they have all meant so much to so many people.

Chloe is a unique artist, and one that I couldn't wait to chat to. Simply put but definitely not simply made, she makes soft food. Created using only wool and thread, she creates one of a kind, intricate sculptures replicating everything from Japanese cleaning supplies to cans of tuna in a really subversive and somehow hilarious way. During the episode we touch on imposter syndrome and how Chloe battles with some of the stereotypes and typecasting that comes with the territory. We cover some deep topics like what does true authenticity look like in the creative process and some lighter things like why we are all so obsessed with the design of foreign food packaging. We talk about the very interesting and polarizing topic of specializing vs generalizing and what challenges and benefits that come with each direction. This episode is pure joy and Chloe delivers some very unexpected and hilarious responses to my questions. Folk Alliance 2019 in Montreal did not pan out exactly as I planned…I caught some wonderful music and some audio for this podcast but for the most part, I spent the entire week trying to navigate and operate with incredible back and hip pain…what I thought was sciatica turned out to be, among other things, a couple of stress fractures in my lower back. I will always be most grateful for two things from that trip...the kindness and assistance shown to me by my travelling Kansas City music family and the discovery of the musical tour de force known as Rising Appalachia. As world travelers for nearly two decades, Rising Appalachia are now merging multiple global music influences with their own southern roots. Founded by sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith, the band has established an international fan base due to relentless touring, tireless activism, and no small degree of stubborn independence. But it wasn’t always so. The sisters have morphed into this musical life coming to realize that performing could be just one component of a greater overall vision – one that includes advocating for social, racial and environmental justice, and Indigenous rights. When I discovered that Rising Appalachia would again have an Official Showcase at Folk Alliance 2020 in New Orleans, I knew I had to try and have a conversation with at least one of the sisters for this podcast. Ironically within a few days of that discovery, Rising Appalachia’s team reached out to me as a registered Folk DJ at the conference, asking if I wanted an interview opportunity in New Orleans. Leah Song aka “The Hustler” and I did sit down late one afternoon for a lovely chat. She could not have been more engaging and accommodating. Enjoy this conversation that highlights the dynamics of being a female led band, the importance of stewardship and cooperation from the male band members, creating a complete aesthetic by adorning themselves with wearable art made by friends and fans, and the band’s commitment to what they call the “slow music” movement. Enjoy my time with Leah Song of Rising Appalachia.

What does sustainability look like on the road and across the globe as touring musicians? We asked Rising Appalachia, a tremendously talented and soulful band rooted in southern music tradition with their own modern twist. Its founding sisters, Leah and Chloe Smith from New Orleans incorporate world and urban influences with both timely and timeless lyrics to remind us of our shared humanity and responsibility for social and climate justice. In their globe-trotting journeys, the group has been practicing what they call the ‘Slow Music’ approach to sustainable touring - reducing the needless plastic waste of music events and connecting with local communities and food systems wherever they can. This episode features a reflective live conversation with Leah before the group’s Los Angeles release party for their new album Leylines, discussing the Slow Music Movement as well as their fresh new album, available now on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, and Tidal.

This week's Extraordinary Women Radio interview is with Leah Song, one of the singers and songwriters of Rising Appalachia. Two years ago as the seeds to this podcast were being planted, I made a list of about 20 women I’d love to interview on Extraordinary Women Radio. Rising Appalachia was at the top of my list. There's something to be said for writing down your goals, my friends! The harmony of Leah Song and Chloe Smith, the founding sisters of Rising Appalachia, has a sense of deep rootedness, playful exploration, and inspired action. Their sound and message, suggest that voices and traditions, brought together through song, may be one of the saving graces to a world in distress. As someone who loves music - is touched by music - I feel their work is so important. In a time when the fabric of our communities and culture often appear to be unraveling, their interweaving of music and mission, old traditions with new interpretations, creates an atmosphere of contagious hope and bliss. Leah tells so many wonderful stories in this interview! She shares how she and her sister Chloe created an album as a gift to their parent as teenagers, which would unexpectedly launch their career. We talk about how folk story and folk music has shaped the soul-touching songs of Rising Appalachia. We jam about going slow amidst the growth, and Leah shares for the first time behind the mic, the meaning behind her spiral tattoo. You know I had to ask! I love this interview and felt so blessed to get to interview this soulful sister. “It feels really like the fabric of our lives to put together stories through all these different tapestry of songs.” - Leah Song And a big surprise in the end! Leah shares a small snippet of a song that is going to be on their new album! Enjoy! To learn more about Leah and Rising Appalachia, visit their website or you can follow her on any of her social channels, including Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.
