Barny Boatman spent much of his youth traveling the world, living in numerous countries and working a variety of jobs that included factory worker, bartender, journalist, English teacher, computer programmer, board game inventer, and even movie reviewer. But it was in the poker world that he found his true calling.  The London-born player graduated from home games with his brother Ross to bigger games with fellow Brits Joe Beevers and Ram Vaswani, forming what would later be known as 'The Hendon Mob.' Now a tournament database site, the Hendon mob would previously travel the tournament circuit together, and was featured prominently on England's 'Late Night Poker' television series shortly before the poker boom.  Boatman earned the respect of his peers in the states with three consecutive final tables at the World Series of Poker. There were plenty of close calls, but he finally nabbed gold in 2013 in a $1,500 no-limit event for $546,080. Boatman earned his second bracelet two years later in Germany, taking down a €550 pot-limit Omaha event at the WSOP Europe series. He's added another five WSOP final tables in the last couple of years, including a runner-up showing at the 2023 WSOP Europe €1,650 no-limit six-max event.  Most recently, he found the winner's circle at the 2024 EPT Paris series, pocketing a career best $1.4 million for taking down the €5,300 main event. As a result, the 68-year-old has become the oldest European Poker Tour champion in history, and is now a member of Team PokerStars as a brand ambassador.Highlights from this interview include what's in a name, the Archway game, getting expelled from school, channel cyberia and mystic monk, poker TV pioneer, the isle of man tournament with John Duthie, being a logo, accidentally creating a database, going broke on his first trip to Vegas, a regretable hand against Hasan Habib, a three-hour heads-up battle for a bracelet, dealing with insomnia, game ethics, charcoal portraits, the crooning punk, humor from Victoria Coren-Mitchell, four-day cash game sessions, and being mistaken for a dead guy.

Forché received a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship after translating the work of Salvadoran-exiled poet Claribel Algería in 1977; the fellowship enabled her to work as a human rights advocate in El Salvador. She has published five books of poetry and the 2019 memoir What You Have Heard Is True. Her work is often described as “devastating” due to its searing honesty and unflinching accounting of travesties. Forché has been given various awards in recognition of her work on behalf of human rights and the preservation of culture and memory. This episode includes a reading of her poem, “The Boatman”  featured in our 2023 Get Lit Anthology.“The Boatman”We were thirty-one souls all, he said, on the gray-sick of seain a cold rubber boat, rising and falling in our filth.By morning this didn't matter, no land was in sight, all were soaked to the bone, living and dead.We could still float, we said, from war to war. What lay behind us but ruins of stone piled on ruins of stone?City called “mother of the poor” surrounded by fieldsof cotton and millet, city of jewelers and cloak-makers,with the oldest church in Christendom and the Sword of Allah. If anyone remains there now, he assures, they would be utterly alone. There is a hotel named for it in Rome two hundred metersfrom the Piazza di Spagna, where you can have breakfast underthe portraits of film stars. There the staff cannot do enough for you.But I am talking nonsense again, as I have since that nightwe fetched a child, not ours, from the sea, drifting face-down in a life vest, its eyes taken by fish or the birds above us.After that, Aleppo went up in smoke, and Raqqa came under a rainof leaflets warning everyone to go. Leave, yes, but go where? We lived through the Americans and Russians, through Americansagain, many nights of death from the clouds, mornings surprisedto be waking from the sleep of death, still unburied and alivebut with no safe place. Leave, yes, we obey the leaflets, but go where? To the sea to be eaten, to the shores of Europe to be caged? To camp misery and camp remain here. I ask you then, where? You tell me you are a poet. If so, our destination is the same.I find myself now the boatman, driving a taxi at the end of the world.I will see that you arrive safely, my friend, I will get you there.Support the showSupport the show

Today's guest has worked at many levels of different organizations and brings a wealth of knowledge to the topic of leadership and management! In today's episode of Playing in the Sandbox, I'm so excited to bring you into my most recent conversation with Tia Boatman Patterson, the President and CEO of the California Community Reinvestment Corporation. We talk about the importance of communication, expectation-setting, and building management skills at all levels of an organization!   A good manager is aware of their organization's operations, processes, and procedures and understands how to create and implement them to get things done. 2.            A good leader can motivate, drive, and inspire - and may not be in a “leadership” position!   3.            Having a vision on a leadership level is important, but having strong management is critical to bringing that vision into reality.   4.            “Fake it till you make it” does not make a good leader or manager. Hold off on leading others until you know how to lead yourself well.   5.            Management isn't easy. From having bold conversations to maintaining open communication between different levels of an organization, there is a lot to balance! Our managers need access to education so they can build those skill sets.   6.            One management skill leaders must embrace is communicating to all levels of their organizations. If they don't, they risk their big messages getting watered down. Go to https://www.tammyjbond.com/podcast to learn how to build up your management skills. What if I mess my kids up?What if I fail at my job? What if I'm actually doing it all wrong? These are some of the “what if” questions that I wrestle with. I think we all have big “what if” questions, they're all just a little different depending on our experiences, wiring, and situations. Our kids have questions like this too and my guest today, Katy Boatman, is here to walk us through that. Katy is a writer and marketer, but her favorite role is being an aunt to Shelby, Blake, and Ellie. Katy has spent fifteen years mentoring girls through student ministry, and she is passionate about helping them understand who God is and reminding them they are not alone. Katy's devotional, You Can Trust, addresses many of the questions boys have from what if my team loses? to what if God changes his mind about me? And the answers always point back to God's enduring faithfulness. Today Katy and I are talking about preteen boys and the “what if” questions they wrestle with, the need kids have for stability and truth as they grow up and ask questions, how girls and boys learn about and respond to God differently, and the need for devotionals and other resources for preteen boys. I hope this is helpful for both boy moms and girl moms, too! Spending over twelve years coaching the Toreros at the University of San Diego, ten as the Head Coach, she developed the women so much that prior to her culmination at the helm of the program, the women at USD finished with the highest ranking in the history of the program. Similar to USD, Kim coached up the Knights at UCF, and just recently Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas from 2017-2023.Cupini's impact to each program she has lead is truly astronomical --- so much so that fifteen athletes from SMU, along with an additional five from other institutions, entered the NCAA Transfer Portal during the summer of 2023, in following Kim to Tennessee. Similar to the athletes, her coaching staff chose to travel to the Rocky Top as well, even including the Boatman, Randy Duffy.Hudson and Kim speak on a variety of topics regarding her transition to Tennessee as well as clarification to several widespread rumors and thoughts from rowing enthusiasts. Cupini's primary focus is student-athlete development, seeing the progression of the person as a whole, which is completely evident in the way she speaks about her team on this episode. Today our guest, Katy Boatman, chats with us about her new devotional for boys, “You Can Trust.” We were fascinated listening to Katy discuss how she landed on this writing project.  (You'll have to listen to find out…☺)   Preteen boys have a lot of thoughts spinning through their curious minds each day.  But too often, their “what-if” questions are rooted in fear and anxiety as they try to find their way in a world that doesn't always make sense.  This easy-to-read devotional by Katy Boatman offers daily encouragement and truths to combat that worry.  Each of the 100 devotions, plus interactive activity days, (which sound super fun!) rallies boys to trust the God who has all the answers.  They'll explore questions such as:   What if I don't feel strong enough? What if I'm scared? What if my team loses? What if God changes His mind about me?   “You Can Trust” offers boys tangible reminders that they can trust God with all their what-ifs and questions in life.   Katy lives in Nashville, is passionate about mentoring the next generation and authored a devotional book, “You Can Rest,” for girls which was a finalist in the category of “Young People's Literature for the ECPA'S 2023 CHRISTIAN BOOK AWARD. “Check it out, too!    Connect with Katy on Instagram @katyboat   As always, thanks for listening! Tetragrammaton with Rick Rubin

Nick Cave is a musician, songwriter, author, and actor, best known as the frontman of the band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, though is also beloved for his early group, The Birthday Party. Albums from The Boatman's Call (1997) to Skeleton Tree (2016) showcase Cave's ability to craft emotionally charged and intellectually stimulating compositions filled with hauntingly poetic lyrics. Beyond music, Cave's authored several books, including And the Ass Saw the Angel (1989) and Stranger Than Kindness (2021). His collaborations with director John Hillcoat on movies like The Proposition (2005) and Lawless (2012) have received critical acclaim. And he maintains an open and engaging dialogue with his fans through his newsletter, The Red Hand Files. This podcast was recorded the day after the conclusion of Caves's duo tour with Radiohead's bassist, Colin Greenwood, in Los Angeles. A few days after recording this podcast, he used The Red Hand Files to write the following message to his fans: “After I stepped off stage at the final show, I changed from my grey suit into a blue suit, ate some seafood with Colin, and then headed to the aftershow, where I hung out with some old friends for an hour or so before going back to the hotel with Susie. We stayed up for a few hours and then tried to sleep, but I was hyped up, so I took a sleeping pill at 4 am — which was a dumb idea because I had an interview that morning with Rick Rubin for his podcast. Anyway, when I woke up, I put on a grey suit, jumped into the car with my driver to go to Malibu, did Rick's podcast (which could turn out quite interesting as I'm not sure the sleeping pill had completely worn off), then started back to L.A. In the car, I began to feel a bit rough, so we parked up at Zuma Beach, where I threw off my clothes and jumped into the sea in an unsuccessful attempt to restore myself; then we carried on to the hotel, where I changed from my grey suit into a blue suit before heading to Book Soup for [a] signing . . . After the signing, I returned to the hotel feeling tired and weird, sat up with Susie for a while, went to bed, woke up about 2 am, threw up in the sink and collapsed unconscious on the bathroom floor. Susie found me there and hauled me back onto the bed; my assistant was called to the hotel, some extremely handsome emergency paramedics turned up, a lovely nurse arrived and fixed me to a drip, and later, I spoke to an eighty-nine-year-old saint of a doctor who diagnosed an acute gastro event.” ------ Thank you to the sponsors that fuel our podcast and our team: LMNT Electrolytes https://drinklmnt.com/tetra ------ House of Macadamias https://www.houseofmacadamias.com/tetra ------ Squarespace https://squarespace.com/tetra ------
