Probablemente el primer precursor del anime en la cultura japonesa fue el "Emakimono" (ilustración horizontal que consistía en un rollo con dibujos que se van desenrollando de un lado y luego enrollando del otro), de los cuales el más famoso puede ser La Historia de Genji del año 1130.
