For migratory birds, nighttime light can be deadly. Artificial light draws birds off course, increasing the risk of exhaustion, window collisions and predation. Experts say the problem is growing as Connecticut skies become brighter. This hour, we explore how light pollution impacts birds, river ecosystems, insects and even human health. Plus, an amateur astronomer shares why protecting dark skies matters not just for science, but for our connection to the natural world. Guests: Craig Repasz, director of Lights Out Connecticut Misha SemeLev, associate university architect for sustainability, Yale University Alan Sheiness, board of directors treasurer, Lyme Land Trust Support the show: http://wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The line trade gives apprentices the opportunity to earn while they learn and train for a lifelong career powering their communities. Before they even join an apprenticeship program, however, some high school graduates are learning the basics of line work through a pre-apprenticeship. For example, our latest ICYMI episode of the Line Life Podcast highlights the one-year Electric Utility Technology Program at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) in Iowa. This article, "Training for a Future Career on the Line," which originally appeared in the October 2025 issue of T&D World magazine, spotlights two former students: Trevor Grefe and Kellen Miller. Grefe became interested in the line trade because he wanted to work with his hands, found the concept of electricity fascinating and wanted to help people. Miller learned about opportunities in line work as an intern at an architectural firm after seeing a photo of a lineworker hanging out of a helicopter, working on a transmission line. For more information, visit DMACC's training program website or read the article on T&D World's website.

This week on the Murder Diaries, we're thrilled to have a very special guest who's been behind the scenes of some truly incredible podcasts, including some of the episodes of the Murder Diaries. Joining us today is our friend, Haley Gray, a dedicated researcher, storyteller, and advocate whose work has shaped many of the shows you know and love. Haley has contributed to the research of countless podcasts digging deep into the facts, uncovering hidden details, and ensuring these stories are told with the utmost accuracy and care. Haley is also one of the board members of The Bridegan Foundation, which brought the Bexley Box project to life. This non-profit was born as a result of the senseless murder of Jared Bridegan, a case we've covered here on the podcast, and it aims to provide support and resources to families impacted by violent crime. Haley is also involved with "Light the Way" an organization dedicated to guiding families through the overwhelming process of getting exposure for unresolved cases. Haley's work goes far beyond research though. She's committed to justice, advocacy, and helping others navigate difficult paths. Season 5 Episode 8: Interview With Light The Way And The Gabby Petito Foundation The Invisible Tears team was honored to sit down with Shayna, founder or Light The Way and Nichole Schmidt, mother of Gabby Petito and President of the Gabby Petito Foundation. The advocacy work that these two amazing organizations do is incredible, and now with both of these organizations working together, their work will be profound! Light The Way is a victim-centered volunteer organization dedicated to reuniting missing persons with their loved ones, fostering positive relationships between families and law enforcement and advocating tirelessly for victims of unresolved cases, missing individuals and their families. The Gabby Petito Foundation's mission is to address the needs of organizations that support locating missing persons and to provide aid to organizations that assist victims of domestic violence situations, through education, awareness, and prevention strategies. Gabby went missing while on a cross-country road trip that included visits to many of our national parks. After an intensive search it was discovered that Gabby's life was tragically cut short. Her family and the foundation wish to turn their personal tragedy into a positive. It is their hope that Gabby's foundation will bring these important issues into the forefront of the public eye to the benefit of all communities. With the Winter Solstice approaching, I've been reflecting on this season of deep darkness and stillness. Winter has always been a challenge for me—I see its beauty, but I also struggle with the cold and the long nights. Over the years, I've started to see winter as an invitation to slow down and rest. Nature hibernates, but society pushes us to stay busy, especially during the holidays. This creates tension that many of us feel. The solstice reminds me to pause and honor the darkness—not as something to fear, but as a time for reflection and growth. Rest has been a big lesson for me, especially as someone who's tied success to productivity. I'm learning that slowing down is not only necessary but powerful. Here are some journaling prompts I've been working with this season: What am I resisting in this season of life? How can I honor my energy while still showing up for loved ones? What might I gain if I allowed myself to truly slow down? What can I release to feel lighter this season? How can I create intentional space for rest in my life? This solstice, I invite you to embrace stillness. Light a candle, pause, and reflect: What if rest is exactly what we need to prepare for what's next?If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe to The Holistic Living Podcast and leave a review.
