Jason shares his jouney of grief and loss to sunshine and hope. "As a therapist, I could help other people, but I couldn't help myself." In 2018, my life was flipped upside down after my wife (Valerie) was diagnosed with stage 4 Colon Cancer. I was terrified for myself and my small family of four. This was devastating news that completely rocked our world. The Doctor in the hospital looked at me and said “Jason, Cancer has a way of enhancing your life”. At this point in my life, I did not want this. I wanted the life I had before to go back to normal. After Valerie's Initial diagnosis, we were given 2-3 hours for Valerie's life expectancy. Fast Forward 9 months later, and we found ourselves saying goodbye at her funeral. No one or thing can fully prepare you for life's challenges, trials, and pain. After the funeral was complete and over, I remember my support from my family and friends quickly disappeared. I quickly found myself all alone trying to pick up the pieces of life. It was a hard and lonely time for me. “What happened to all the people that were here for me”. “Does anyone care anymore”? “Where is my Team”? “How will I get through this?” I remember saying to myself “Will I Become Happier again”. Will I find love again”. “Will I feel Joy again”. Life began to get more and more difficult as life continued after the passing of my wife. I found myself more and more depressed, isolating, lonely, anxious, and even struggling to sleep. Life quickly became overwhelming, and I was fearful of the future because I felt like I was going to do this all alone and this was a terrifying thought. As a clinical therapist, no one taught me about these moments that I was currently experiencing. No one prepared me on how to deal with or cope with my emotions and what I was currently dealing with. I knew I could help others going through challenging times in their life, but I could not help myself at this time. At a low point in my journey, I could not do this alone, and finally, I reached out by sending a text for help. I remember feeling so incredibly overwhelmed, and not wanting to feel like this any longer. I sent this “HAIL MARY” text to 14 of my friends, family, and neighbors asking them to come to my house so that I could tell them how I was feeling. Later that day, all those people I texted showed up at my house in what I call my “HEALING TEAM”. At this point, I begin to find hope and happiness again. That summer me and my boys decided to have a lemonade stand and raise money to create “SUNSHINE BASKETS” for people that had lost a spouse, dealing with cancer, or individuals that were struggling. We wanted to raise $100 but after the lemonade stand was over we had raised $1500. This was a shock and overwhelming. We decided to make 25 baskets and begin delivering them to people who needed help and support. As we continued to create and deliver these sunshine baskets, a lady from Virginia asked if she could get one because she was struggling. From there we created a sunshine box and began delivering it to this lady and several people across the United States. Currently, we have delivered to 45 states and are soon to be 50. I and my Business partner (Wyatt Ernst) have created Giving Sunshine, and as of January 2022, I have stepped away from being a therapist to going full time at Giving Sunshine. We are now working hard to provide more help and healing to those that have lost loved ones, are struggling with Cancer, and have mental health issues. Our Boxes provide therapeutic tools that help others heal and become happier during challenging times of their life. Episode 126 – Interview with Jason Clawson, Clinical Therapist Jason Clawson, a Clinical Therapist based in Utah, specializes in Grief, Addiction, Trauma and Mental Health. His byline for life is, “Healing takes courage!”In 2018, Jason's life was flipped upside down after his wife (Valerie) was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer. This was devastating news for his young family of four and it completely rocked their world. He was terrified because the doctor told him his wife only had days or weeks to live. Nine months later loved ones and family members were saying goodbye at her funeral. Jason recalls that time and wants others to know that “no one or thing can fully prepare you for life's challenges, trials, and pain. After the funeral was complete and over, I remember my support from my family and friends quickly disappeared. I quickly found myself all alone trying to pick up the pieces of life. It was a hard and lonely time for me”. He found himself wondering, "what happened to all the people that were here for me"? "Does anyone care anymore"? "Where is my Team"? "How will I get through this?" Life began to get more and more difficult as life continued after the passing of his wife. He found himself more and more depressed, isolating, lonely, anxious, and even struggling to sleep. Life quickly became overwhelming, and he was fearful of the future. As a clinical therapist, no one had taught him about these moments he was experiencing. The Summer following the loss of his wife, he and his sons decided to have a lemonade stand, with the goal of raising money to create "SUNSHINE BASKETS" for people that had lost a spouse, were dealing with cancer, or individuals that were struggling. The goal was to raise $100 but after the lemonade stand closed, they had raised over $1,500. The fundraising success allowed them to make 25 baskets and they begin delivering them to people who needed help and support. Shortly thereafter a lady in Virginia called to see if she could get a “Sunshine Basket” because she was struggling. That caused the launch of a new business - “Giving Sunshine” Currently, they have delivered baskets to forty-five states and soon will have sent them to all fifty states. Jason and his business partner, Wyatt Ernst, have seen rapid growth in their startup venture. Learn more about “Giving Sunshine” here: https://givingsunshine.com/ Facebook link: https://www.facebook.com/GivingSunshineDaily Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/givingsunshinedaily/

Grief is a natural response to loss. It's the emotional suffering felt when something or someone you love is taken away. Often, the pain of loss can feel overwhelming. You may experience all kinds of difficult and unexpected emotions, from shock or anger to disbelief, guilt, and profound sadness. The pain of grief can also disrupt your physical health, making it difficult to sleep, eat, or even think straight. These are normal reactions to loss—and the more significant the loss, the more intense your grief will be. Jason shares about how he survived and had a support team of family and friends to help him in his grief. Jason quit his job as a mental health therapist and spent a summer making fun memories with his 2 boys. Today I'm celebrating the 100th episode of the Speak Loud Podcast! I'm recapping some of my favorite episodes so far, and what I've learned in 100 episodes. Thank you to everyone who has reached out and sent messages about how they've resonated with the podcast. This show is for you, after all, so I always love hearing your feedback and ideas. The Speak Loud Podcast is about sharing a message of hope, but we all have to get through the dark parts to reach the light. I've learned how to use my past not as a crutch, but as a stepping stone for my future. After 22 years, my book Throwaway Girl is out this fall, and in that memoir, I cover details from Episode 1 in my own story of triumph and hope. Some of my favorite episodes have been with friends or people in my close circles. In “Speak Up and Speak Loud Against Abuse”, my talk with my aunt opened my eyes to generational trauma in my family. Scott Clover, my dear friend, and somatic healer helps clients remove emotional blockages and connect to their authentic energy in “Intuitive Trauma Healing.”Another one of my favorite episodes was “Why Resilience Matters with Em Capito.” Em was my first TedX speaker, and resilience is one of my favorite words. Resilience is about turning adversity into strength and triumphing over a challenge, which is the message I want to share on the Speak Loud Podcast. Many episodes have been deep-dives into the brain and body after trauma. “How Trauma Affects the Brain with Joe Dennis” is one of the most listened-to episodes, where Joe brings valuable insight from his career as a clinician. “How To Use Creativity to Heal from Trauma with Lauri Schoenfeld” has excellent information for finding a different outlet for your healing. In “Exploring the Complexities of Trauma”, Michelle Binion, certified mental health clinician, enlightens us on why we work the way we do after trauma. I've had great guests whose stories are full of light and hope. Rena Romano, in her episode “Overcoming Shame After Sexual Abuse,” shares how she's become a “sur-thriver” and found endless possibilities in life. If you want an uplifting episode, check out “Giving Sunshine with Jason Clawson.” Jason is a clinical therapist and father whose movement “Giving Sunshine” sends therapeutic care packages to families struggling with grief, illness, and other struggles. Thank you for tuning in and for continuing to believe in the Speak Loud message. As always, you are worthy, you are enough, and keep on shining your light. Speak Loud Podcast on the webSpread the message of Speak Loud Podcast andshare this episode with a friend!***Disclaimer: All content found on Speak Loud Podcast, including text, images, audio, or other formats were created for informational purposes only. He's gravitated towards helping people with addiction, as well as trauma and grief. He values being more than just a sounding board for his clients, but being someone who will walk the path with them. Three years ago, Jason's wife passed away from stage 4 colon cancer. At the time, it felt impossible to calm down with so many fears and uncertainties. During treatment, a doctor told him, “Cancer has a way of enhancing your life,” and while he refused the notion at first, those words have stuck with him.Jason recalls how, after the funeral, he felt incredibly alone. He continued to work for 9 months until he realized that he needed an intervention. So, he set one up, texting more than a dozen people to invite them to his house to help. People want to help, he says, but often don't know how. 3 weeks later, Jason quit his job to spend the whole summer with his boys. “We need to make some happy memories so that we can be happier again,” he told them. Jason's idea for sunshine boxes came as a result of a lemonade stand with his kids and a basket of yellow things that his wife received while in treatment. In raising money to create and send out boxes, Jason was able to not only help others through pain but watch his sons do the same. The boxes come with fun yellow things to bring happiness, as well as therapeutic tools to help in difficult times.Jason and his partner have sent the sunshine boxes to 21 states, and hope to do all 50. “This is what my wife would want to do,” Jason says, and details how he's able to keep his wife in his life every day. The “Giving Sunshine” kickstarter is now live, and Jason has many plans for spreading sunshine in the near future. Listen in for advice on counseling loved ones, how to find resources for therapy, and the story of the Giving Sunshine movement. Resources MentionedJoin Me on Speak Loud PlatformSpeak Loud Podcast on the webDonate to the Giving Sunshine KickstarterSpread the message of Speak Loudly Podcast and share this episode with a friend!***Disclaimer: All content found on Speak Loud Podcast, including text, images, audio, or other formats were created for informational purposes only. In this episode, we speak with Jason Clawson and get a dad's perspective for the first time on this podcast. He shares how his family took a horrible tragedy and turned it into something good.   Four years ago, Jason felt like his life was going right and that he and his family were living the life they were meant to live. They were building their dream house, he was a clinical director at a recovery program, his young boys were thriving, and his 40-year old brother finally got married. His wife had also lost 100 lbs. after having weight loss surgery and was feeling amazing.   A month after his brother's wedding, his wife found a lump in her stomach that was growing. They began a journey of talking to doctors about what was going on, and they were stumped. Their life was on hold as they waited for answers. One day, they received a call that his wife should consult an oncology surgeon because she had spots throughout her body.   His wife underwent exploratory surgery with a partial hysterectomy where the surgeon found a large lump near her colon. The surgeon told Jason that his wife had stage four colon cancer.   This moment was life-changing. He couldn't believe that this was happening to them. His mind began to race about how their family would navigate this. The surgeon told him something that he will never forget, that cancer has a way of enhancing your life and you will get through this. He was stunned in the moment and angry about this for years.   This experience was the hardest that they would have to go through in their lives. As he is going through this, he had to show up for clients at work and be the best for them. When he got home, he took care of his wife and children. By the end of the night, he was exhausted. But he knew that this is what he was supposed to do, no matter how hard it was.   Even though his wife was given two to three years to live, nine months later his wife passed away. When the funeral was over, he realized that this was the time that he needed his family to rally around him and support him. He and his five and eleven-year-old boys were all struggling and he felt like there was nothing he could do to make everything better.   Jason decided that he wasn't going to wait around until things got better. He wanted to show his children how to get through this experience and to grieve in a healthy and happy way. He texted 13 people in his circle and shared his struggles and asked for help. They showed up and wanted to help him.   After this, life became a little easier. They created a system where he could reach out for support with just one word. His support team was grateful for the opportunity to help him heal and checked in with him regularly. He realized that people wanted to help but just didn't know how to do so.   He ended up quitting his job for the summer and dedicated it to creating happy memories with his boys. They created a bucket list of activities and one of those was putting together sunshine baskets that they could deliver to anyone who had lost a loved one. They helped others grieve while they grieved too.   Today, they have delivered sunshine baskets in 24 states and created a cause called Giving Sunshine. They launched a Kickstarter so they can reach more people with what Jason calls “therapy in a box”.   Discussed in this episode: Going through difficult experiences Checking in on the caregiver Supporting family after a death Children struggling with loss Asking for help Creating a healing circle Being vulnerable Looking for opportunities to help Being a hybrid dad Sunshine baskets Looking for happy things Paying it forward Community and connection How males deal with emotion And other topics...   About Jason Clawson:   Jason Clawson is the co-owner of Giving Sunshine, which is on a mission to help support, heal, and get others to connect with their own healing teams. Interview was done January 16, 2022! I love meeting new people willing to let me in and share their “lemon to lemonade” experience! This story is about Jason and how everything was going right in his life then his wife was suddenly diagnosed with cancer and died within months. He teaches about what it is like to have a 'healing team' and to get the help that you need. Jason healed from the inside out by delivering sunshine buckets to others who are suffering with grief, loss, depression, or sadness. What message do you get from this interview? Website: https://givingsunshine.org ABOUT the LemonAid Stand: Heidi started hosting the LemonAid Stand live radio talk show, over 20 years ago, in 1999! It all came about when Heidi was dealing with thoughts of suicide, inadequacy, and dealing with infertility. She realized as she reached out to others and heard their stories, she would be uplifted and inspired no matter what she was going through. So this podcast has old "Original" shows from that time period. It also has "New" shows that are currently being recorded with new guests. And it has "Update" shows where Heidi reached out to original radio show guests to find out how the past 20 years have been! Theme song written and recorded by my baby brother Shane!
