Tonight's episode is dedicated to the victims and their families in the mass shooting that took place on the evening of February 13th on the campus of Michigan State University. We wanted to take some to acknowledge and recognize the victims of this tragic shooting, as well as address the question on the minds of millions of Americans, "where do we go from here?" We endeavor to spend time in this week's "Spartan Strong" edition, discussing the timeline of events that took place that fateful day on Feb 13th, and also memorialize the victims; Arielle Anderson, Brian Frazier and Alexandria Verney. 3 innocent victims who lost their lives very tragically at the hands of a deranged gunman. During tonight's episode we tackle the tough questions regarding what should be our next steps? Plus, we also take a look at the Gun Safety Bi-Partisan Legislation that was passed last summer and why hasn't it measured up, and what can be done to fix it. PLUS, we share a clarion call in the form of a letter from Bishop Charles Ellis III; Senior Pastor of Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, MI, on behalf of the Ecumenical Community of the State of Michigan, to the victims of the MSU Mass Shooting, their families, Spartans as well as City, State and Federal officials. A call to action from our elected officials to join together to rid of our nation of this deadly epidemic of mass shootings and domestic terrorism. Something in deed needs to be done, and certainly we desire to be apart of the solution and not apart of the problem. And, this is why we have dedicated this entire show to share our thoughts about this very important subject of gun violence in America. We hope you join us for this very important discussion. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/michael-s-nimmons/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/michael-s-nimmons/support

Angela Birchett gave an Oscar worthy performance in Lifetime's The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel. We caught up with the actress to discuss her background in music, booking the role of Jacky Clark, meeting the real life Jacky in person and her takeaway from this incredible experience. I absolutely loved this movie. Angela did a wonderful job of portraying Jacky as the glue that held the family together. If you haven't seen the movie....What are you waiting for??? Web: https://www.angelabirchett.com Follow: @angelabirchett About This Actress: A native of Detroit, Michigan, Angela embraced her calling to sing and act at an early age. After singing her first solo at her home church: Greater Grace Temple, she knew that she was destined to perform. She spent much of her formative years singing with her sisters in a trio, collectively known as “The Birchett Sisters”. It was in this group that she developed a talent and love for group singing. At 12 years old, Angela was the youngest member of the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra excelling as a percussionist; and at 14, she was cast in her first professional production: a staging of Purlie where she was cast in the role of Missy, effectively making her the youngest cast member, playing one of the oldest characters in the show. Additionally, she was a very active member of the music department at Renaissance High School, under the direction of renowned educator, clinician, and choral director, Nina Scott. After high school, Angela attended Kentucky State University where she double majored in Music Education and Vocal Performance. As a member of the university's Opera Music Theatre Workshop, Concert, and Show Choirs, she was regularly seen on campus performing in several productions and concerts. While at KSU, Angela had the privilege of once again studying under a renowned musician: the late Andrew Smith and was regularly noticed by legendary soprano, Wilhelmenia Fernandez. Angela also received the prestigious honor of being crowned Miss Kentucky State University and placed third in the Miss National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame pageant in 2000, a first for any reigning KSU queen. Following graduation in 2002, Angela returned to Detroit and established the choral department at the Paul Robeson Academy. In the years following her time there, a number of her former students have also been drawn to the performing arts, pursuing university training and careers in musical theater, music recording, modeling, and acting. Feeling an overwhelming inclination to New York City, she made the leap and transitioned full time to performing in 2005. In her first decade here she established herself as a power house and landed roles regionally and on tours starring in hit shows such as: Dreamgirls, Hairspray, Once on This Island, Rent, Ain't Misbehavin, Smokey Joe's Cafe, as well as the 2015 Broadway revival and First National Tour of The Color Purple. Angela has also crossed over and declared herself a force to be reckoned with, appearing on television in a variety of shows including: Kevin Can Wait (CBS) and The Blindspot (NBC). In the fall of 2019, Angela will make her feature length debut in You Brought the Sunshine: The Story of the Clark Sisters (Lifetime) where she will tackle the role of Jacky Clark. Angela juggles a very busy performance schedule that includes time spent as a session singer for various artists and jingle companies. She also appears in NYC at a myriad of performance venues, including a weekly residency as host of “Lights out on Broadway” in Times Square. This curated open mic has featured a plethora of Broadway performers and recording artists and has become a NYC nightlife hot spot. For Angela, Sharing her gifts and talents is not about the destination, but the journey. Faith, Passion, and a burning desire to fully express herself whenever afforded the opportunity drive her discipline. Angela is committed to the lifelong pursuit of integrity and skill as an actor, warmth and honesty as a singer, humility as a seasoned performer, and she is loving every minute of it! Bernie Sanders proved his 2016 presidential bid was serious with an upset victory in Michigan powered by his opposition to free trade and appeal among working-class voters. Four years later, the state could either revive the Vermont senator's campaign or relegate him to the role of protest candidate.Michigan and five other states already began voting early Tuesday morning in what will be a critical point in the Democratic race. Former Vice President Joe Biden is looking to quash Sanders' hopes and cement his own front-runner status just a week after resurrecting his beleaguered White House bid with a delegate victory on Super Tuesday. He played up his underdog story on Monday as he campaigned across Michigan, reflecting on his stutter as a child and the deaths of his first wife and young daughter. And Biden wasn't alone. The former vice president courted the state's influential African American voters alongside the two most prominent black candidates previously in the 2020 race, Kamala Harris and Cory Booker, who endorsed Biden in recent days as part of a broader consolidation of support among party leaders. They all appeared hand-in-hand at Biden's final Michigan rally Monday night, also joined by the state's governor, Gretchen Whitmer, who also endorsed the former vice president.Sanders is in an urgent fight to turn things around as the primary calendar quickly shifts to other states that could favor Biden and narrow his path to the nomination. The senator countered the parade of Democratic firepower lining up behind Biden by securing the endorsement of the Rev. Jesse Jackson and deploying Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., on his behalf.Dozens of Detroit residents voted before the sun came up at a polling place set up inside Greater Grace Temple, a mammoth church in the city that hosted funerals for Aretha Franklin and Rosa Parks.Among the voters was Tahechia Franklin, a 50-year-old who works in property management.Franklin, who voted for Bernie Sanders, said the most important issues to her are health care and "I want Trump out."Having devoted several days to Michigan, the Vermont senator spent the eve of Tuesday's primaries in Missouri, where he downplayed questions about electability and insisted that the "energy and excitement" of his supporters made him the strongest Democrat to run against President Donald Trump this fall. Tuesday marks the first time voters will weigh in on the Democratic contest since it effectively narrowed to a two-person race between Sanders and Biden. It will be another test of whether Sanders can broaden his appeal among African Americans. Biden, meanwhile, must show that he can keep momentum going after his surprise Super Tuesday turnaround. "I like his chances," Whitmer said of the former vice president in an interview."He knows Michigan," the governor added. "When our back was up against the wall during the auto struggles of the past, it was Barack Obama and Joe Biden who had our backs."That's a reference to the Obama administration overseeing federal bailouts that helped the auto industry — the lifeblood of Michigan's economy — weather the 2009 financial crisis. Sanders counters that he, too, voted to save the auto industry. He also says that, unlike Biden, he opposed the North American Free Trade Agreement, which he said prompted thousands of Michigan jobs to move to Mexico since taking effect in 1994.During a campaign stop at a Detroit autoworkers plant Tuesday morning, Biden received an overwhelmingly positive response."You're the best damn workers in the world," Biden shouted through a megaphone as workers in hard hats chanted "Joe." "Wall Street didn't build this country. You built this country."Biden ticked off the names of six former presidential rivals who have endorsed him just in the past week during a Monday appearance with Booker in Flint, Michigan, a community that has seen auto industry jobs disappear: "They've all come out and endorsed at one time ....
