Brian Ritchie is our first guest whose primary instrument - the one that helped make his band Violent Femmes a household name - is an acoustic bass. Today we hear how all that came to be, the band's path from busking on the streets of Milwaukee to rocking stadiums, and why their approach really hasn't changed all that much. Along the way he tells some funny stories about early gigs, opens up about a new acoustic bass he's gotten his hands on and even shares what Flea told him about working with producer Michael Beinhorn. Also - and this will make sense after you listen - here are two updates to things I say in this episode: My amazing engineer/mixer Matt Noble pointed me to lutefish.com, a hardware-software set-up that does enable near real-time jamming over distances less than 500 miles. I haven't tried it out, because it requires being hardwired to my modem and that's too far away from my basses. Parquet Courts' (fantastic) bassist Sean Yeaton doesn't play a stock short scale bass - it's a frankenbass made up of the body and pickups of an ‘84 Fender Bullet bass (short scale) and the neck of a '50s P-Bass reissue (standard scale). It also has a weird hole in it. Text us about this show.Phil Tittle is a guitarist/singer/songwriter with a passion to serve. He served his country for twenty years in the US Air Force, but during that time a guitar was never far away from his hands. After retiring from the USAF, he served veterans by starting a chapter of Guitars For Vets. He also served beginning musicians by establishing a school where they could learn songwriting and guitar. These days he's serving up some great original songs and we're premiering one of them on this show. Phil grew up in Georgia, so a number of southern based artists like the Allman Brothers Band, Waylon Jennings, and Tom Petty have influenced his music, but he has a style all his own. Let's just say Phil's serving up music that's both familiar and fresh."I Wish I Knew" and "Hammer Down" written and performed by Phil Tittle℗ 2024 Phil Tittle Music. In the second half of our interview with the band The Weary World, we focus on the veterans of the group. Not the guys who've been around the longest, the guys who served in the military! Our friend Scott Cvecko, who helped create the band, is a longtime member of the Guitars for Vets program and he tells us what the program is all about and how it helps our veterans. We also chat about what the veterans miss most about being in the military, who among the non-veterans thought about going into the military but ultimately chose a different path and much much more! If you'd like more information on the band, including keeping up with when they'll be making appearances, check out their website https://TheWearyWorld.com. If you'd like more information on the guitars for vets program, including how you can help support their cause, take a look at https://Guitars4Vets.org. Enjoy!

Ever wondered what slide is the best for playing slide guitar? Brass? Bronze? Glass? Heavy? Light? All this will — and more — will be covered in this episode of Acoustic Tuesday! Bottleneck slides are perhaps the most important piece of gear for playing slide guitar...besides your guitar, of course! That's why I've dedicated a whole episode to discussing the importance of picking out the right slide. There are so many choices out there. It can be totally overwhelming. And sometimes, when you're overwhelmed, you just go with the cheapest price. I'm here to advise you against doing that. Instead, take a look at these 10 slide manufacturers to see what to look for in a high-quality slide that can work within your budget. I'll also add that I have a preference for bronze or brass slides. I explain why in the video, but it ultimately boils down to a combination of tone and feel. I really love the heavy feeling of a slide that sits comfortably on my finger and has enough weight that it isn't bouncing off the strings. In addition to talking about slides for slide guitar, you'll also hear from a TAC Family member and Guitars For Vets member on how she is able to achieve all of her guitar goals this year. Inspiring stuff, and I highly recommend you heed her advice! Featured in this Episode... - Robert Barnett - Caitlin Canty - Marcus Miller - Scott's Bass Lessons - Paste Magazine - Cristina Vane

If a doctor told you you'd physically never be able to do something, would you feel defeated or determined? Ben Davis was injured during his time in the Army and was told by a doctor he'd never run again. He's not just running, he's killing it, having just finished 107 miles in 22 hours. In addition to defying the odds, he also works with the organization Guitars For Vets, enhancing and bettering the lives of our veterans. It was a pleasure to welcome him back to the podcast.

Dan joins us today to share why he decided to join the military and his experiences while serving in the Vietnam War. He shares his experiences as a child growing up with an abusive mother and how these experiences helped him develop the survival skills he’d need on the battlefield. He shares how his spiritual beliefs and devotion to God helped him cope with trauma. He discusses why it took over two decades to seek help for his post-combat PTSD, why it was challenging to find help sooner, and how reaching out and connecting to other veterans was the turning point in his healing process. He also shares the Guitars for Vets and HAVEN missions and how they help veterans cope with PTSD through the power of music and pet companions.

Chris Tutty and Lynda Cater of Wonder Woman and more! Chris Tutty is a Canadian Celebrity Artist, born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. His love of the arts could be observed in every school he attended from poetry books, yearbook covers, coloring contests, large murals, paintings, and his participation in various school productions and talent shows. After high school, Chris stopped painting and drawing all together to pursue a Geology degree. It seemed more practical to follow his father's footsteps into the oil and gas field. Now it's his full-time career along with his charity work with Guitars For Vets and more. Chris also sells real-estate and has worked on many different movie projects, tv and commercials throughout the years from The Assassination of Jesse James to Passchendaele. Currently, he is co-producing a tv show called the Chevy Boyzzz with co-star David “Shark” Fralick of The Young and the Restless. Over the years Chris rarely had a spare moment to explore and express his truly passionate side through art. With the passing of three incredibly influential people in his life, Chris found himself drawn back to what always helped him convey his raw unfiltered emotions, art. With several events, newspaper, magazine articles as well as showings under his belt, Chris decided to go back to school. He was the top student in his Graphic Arts and Design program and was awarded the class Valedictorian with top marks in his program. Currently Chris is also training and collaborating with Blake McCully of Cross-Eyed airbrushing, together they are taking art to a new level. In 2015, over two hundred thousand dollars has been raised for local Charites in Calgary through a partnership with Bill Brown of Elevated Auctions, Chris and YYC Charity. Chris’s charitable activities were also recognized in October 2015 by Vigor International with a Humanitarian Award. Today, Chris has several celebrity clients and contributes to charities. Chris has worked with the Kennedys Waterkeepers Alliance in which he was the feature artist, and was able to show his work along with actor Pierce Brosnan. Chris has an amazing ability to express art in a diverse range of mediums: from exact photorealism to the inimitable abstracts. More often than not his pictures are a unique blend of both. What I love best about my brother’s work is... the vivid emotions I feel when viewing his audacious color combinations. We have only seen the tip of his natural, raw, untapped talent. This week on the show, I hang with buddy Jason Gosine from Charleston, SC. We went to music school together and he has had an interesting life trip so far. He's seen a lot, done a lot, served our country and works in a very cool guitar shop in Charleston which is where we recorded this episode. Jason and I are just having a conversation so there's no Social Media Issues, Stories From The Stage or What Are You Listening To this week. We had a great chat and Jason talked about a movie called Artifact that he highly recommends. Since recording this episode, I watched it and I highly recommend it as well. If you're into music – since you listen to this show it's a safe assumption – you need to check out Artifact. Rusty's Cool Guitars is an amazing shop that sells all custom guitars and the profits go to Guitars For Vets, Animal Rescue and a few other charities. It's a very cool shop that does great things so here's the info for Rusty's. www.facebook.com/rustyscoolguitars www.rustyscoolguitars.com You can find me at facebook.com/oreillydrumsbarstar to leave any thoughts, comments, nastygrams or opinions.
