On this episode of the Club + Resort Talks podcast, Rob Thomas speaks with Jonathan Fralick, VP, Racquet Sports for Invited Clubs. Fralick discusses a number of programs across the Invited portfolio, including two grow-the-game initiatives — First Serve and Right Start. First Serve is a comprehensive junior pathway to ensure organization, player development and member enjoyment with clear goals and proven developmental success. The Right Start program is designed for entry-level adults interested in learning or returning to tennis and pickleball, successfully building a community of players who learn and develop together in a social setting. Fralick also talked about inclusivity, technology and speculated on what the future may hold for racquet sports across the club space. Thomas was also joined by Senior Editor Phil Keren. The two discussed some of the latest news from Club + Resort Business, such as three new short courses. Officials at Streamsong Golf Resort in Bowling Green, Fla. say all 19 holes on its fourth golf course, The Chain, will open for preview play March 31. The short course, which was designed by the world-renowned duo of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, brings a new concept to the golf offerings at the resort with options for six and 13-hole loops or a 19-hole round. “When you take strength and length out of the equation, golf becomes much more fun for a vastly expanded group of players,” Coore says. Work is continuing on the construction of the nine-hole Clover golf course at Killearn Club in Tallahassee, Fla. The course will be walking-only and will offer five par-3 holes of varying lengths and four short par-4 holes. MacCurrach Golf Construction of Jacksonville, Fla. continues to execute construction with Aqua Turf International, responsible for the redesigned irrigation system. Construction is expected to conclude in May. Also, golf course architect Tom Clark goes behind the scenes of The Battlefield at Oklahoma's Shangri-La Resort—a 3,000-yard, par-54 layout with more than 100 feet of elevation change. Each hole on The Battlefield is named in honor of an Oklahoma veteran of World War II.

MSU Today with Russ White

Bringing with her a proven track record of success and program building, Robyn Fralick is Michigan State's new women's basketball head coach. Fralick becomes the sixth coach in Spartan women's basketball history.“I was born in Sparrow Hospital. We just drove by that the other day. I graduated from Okemos High School in 2000. I was born and raised here and have family here. It's a wonderful place to grow up. I have so many good memories, and to come back feels a little surreal. It's been interesting, even as we look for houses and places to live. There's a lot of nostalgia. Obviously, I've been back to Okemos a good amount with my family being here, but I've been back as a visitor. Now I'll be back as a community member' it's pretty cool for it to come full circle.”What attracted you back to the lead the MSU program?“I feel so fortunate for the opportunity. Suzy's been the head coach for the past 16 years and has done a wonderful, fabulous job. And for the opportunity to come about at this time in my coaching career just feels really fortunate.”What are some of your immediate short-term goals and some longer-range ones you're thinking about?“Short term is all about people. You've really got to get to know the kids and get your staff. We're right now in the process of getting the staff here and then getting everyone on the same page on what we're about. But that does take time because right now I think the roster is evolving. Who's here? Who's leaving? Who's coming in? Long-term is getting all the people under the same expectations, system, and guidelines. I've done this before. I'm actually having flashbacks. I remember when I went from Ashland to Bowling Green. I remember all the sort of transitional energy that goes into the change. But it's really exciting. And so far, the kids I have been able to meet with have been great.”What are some challenges and opportunities you see?“A challenge is always in the newness when you're taking over a team and teaching a new system and teaching a new way of doing things. I think that always takes time. And I always say the trust piece is so important and it'd be ridiculous of us to think that that just happens with a magic wand. I love to say trust is built. It's not built in a day. It's built every day. And so that's going to be two-way with staff and players. Getting on the same page takes time, but it's an exciting piece of it. Trust is fast to lose and slow to earn. You can't speed that process up, but we can invest in it every day.”Women's college basketball has never been more popular. How has the game evolved over your time in it? And where do you think it's headed?“There are more opportunities. We've been able to play since we were younger. We've had higher level opportunities. So, the quality's been better. The players are better. When there's a better product, there are more eyes on it. And then when the product continues to be so fun to watch, people keep coming back. Title IX's been a big piece of it, and we're continuing to stay in pursuit of more opportunities. And through that, I think we've all seen what it looks like when girls get a chance and when girls also are on TV.”What about the whole world of intercollegiate athletics? We hear about name, image and likeness and the transfer portal. What's your assessment and where do you see it all going?“It's part of our world. And I think to think anything different is a bit naive. Adapt and embrace. And yet I still also believe that the things that matter always matter. That won't change. I was a Division II coach for 10 years. I was at Bowling Green for the past five. And the things that make a quality experience don't change - true relationships, a culture people want to be part of, expectations, standards, being able to help, and being able to provide support. Those things really make an experience. And then the added resources are a bonus and they're part of it. And I think it's really cool. But I've coached really happy kids at DII where we drove a van and ate Subway because they were part of something. And I think the things that matter like feeling part of something and staying in pursuit of something together really matter. “I'd love to have the community come out. I think such a big piece of a student athlete experience is having a crowd that cares and having a student section and an engaged community. And I know that's twofold. I know we have a real responsibility to get into the community and give back to the community. And I always say, you cheer a little differently when you know the kids, right? You cheer a little differently when you really know them and know who they are. I want Breslin to be the ultimate home court advantage.“I've always operated under five core values. I call them the traveling core values when they become really part of a team, and I know that takes time. You see a connected team. You see a spirited and a competitive together team. And that's going to be what we're going to work really hard towards is playing in a way that is inspiring. I always think people are drawn to a team that has that sort of spirit. We're going to work hard to get that.”What are your five core values?“Be a great teammate. That's trendy and easy to say but is actually really hard to do. But when you can do it, your whole experience changes. And our second one is manners matter. We get so many opportunities. We can do so many cool things and we want to make sure we're operating out of gratitude instead of entitlement. Our third one is trust, an important piece for an experience and a career. And then toughness. It's literally how we play. I've never, in all my years of coaching, coached a kid who finished their career and thought, ‘Oh, that was just so easy.' Even the absolute best players I've coached on the best teams have peaks and valleys through a season. There are peaks and valleys through a career. To think anything differently is really naive. There's a toughness piece to the endurance of a career. That's how we'll play. And then our last one is commitment, which is central to doing anything well.”Listen to “MSU Today with Russ White” on the radio and through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your shows.

We meet our next guest, Mary Davis in the barn in Cooperstown. It's a beautiful little spot in New York on the north east side of the lake. Mary is sporting her beautiful sunflower dress on this lovely summer day and she's a Cooperstown girl, but shortly after being born, she moved to North Carolina tobacco country and ended up in rolled in a small Baptist private school where unbeknownst to her she attended with her future husband. Years later, she ends up back in New York, and kind of pushed into her colleagues, who during the first day they find out they went to school together in a small private school in a small town in North Carolina. 31 years later, wife teacher, mother, grandmother she's had all the experiences that you expect from someone at this point in their life. From almost seeing her daughter die in an accident to helping her child, who they are, and being that loving supporting parent, no matter what happens. Listen in to hear Mary's story, how she married the preachers son, the hippie nerd, how she's untethered her self from the past, and how she looks at life that things don't happen for a reason's, but for the purpose that you make from it.For behind the scenes content of the making of The Jar, meet the guests, see some footage of unreleased podcast episodes and more visit : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaTqB1dhDvl0Oh505ysdxTgTo be a guest on the show email us at thejarguest@gmail.com or visit our webpage : https://www.thejar.live/Follow The Jar on Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/thejar_podcast/Follow The Jar on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/podcast.thejarDisclaimer: The views stated in this episode are our guest's opinions and do not represent the views, beliefs or opinions of The Jar Podcast. Abundant SAR11 viruses in the ocean. Rebecca Fralick is a chef and the owner of Mara's Cafe based in Wisconsin. She's a powerhouse business owner and is crystal clear about her values—she's only interested in opportunities that deeply align with her intuition. Alongside her business endeavors, she's also a mom, wife, and lover of plants, sunshine, good coffee, and tacos. Rebecca thinks in flavor profiles and makes decisions with the inner compass of integrity. She's made it her mission for her insides to match her outsides—and it's working. She's only growing more unstoppable, the more she lives what she knows. Throughout this conversation we discuss moving beyond fundamentalism, getting clear about your values, how her business outlived the fail-date she had in mind, the difference between hope that's native and hope that's handed, listening to your gut, and surviving domestic violence. Despite the darkness Rebecca's encountered in her past, the native and very real hope inside her is shining brighter than ever. Full show notes and a downloadable are available at empoweredhumanacademy.com/51—and you can watch the conversation on YouTube here! Chris Tutty and Lynda Cater of Wonder Woman and more! Chris Tutty is a Canadian Celebrity Artist, born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. His love of the arts could be observed in every school he attended from poetry books, yearbook covers, coloring contests, large murals, paintings, and his participation in various school productions and talent shows. After high school, Chris stopped painting and drawing all together to pursue a Geology degree. It seemed more practical to follow his father's footsteps into the oil and gas field. Now it's his full-time career along with his charity work with Guitars For Vets and more. Chris also sells real-estate and has worked on many different movie projects, tv and commercials throughout the years from The Assassination of Jesse James to Passchendaele. Currently, he is co-producing a tv show called the Chevy Boyzzz with co-star David “Shark” Fralick of The Young and the Restless. Over the years Chris rarely had a spare moment to explore and express his truly passionate side through art. With the passing of three incredibly influential people in his life, Chris found himself drawn back to what always helped him convey his raw unfiltered emotions, art. With several events, newspaper, magazine articles as well as showings under his belt, Chris decided to go back to school. He was the top student in his Graphic Arts and Design program and was awarded the class Valedictorian with top marks in his program. Currently Chris is also training and collaborating with Blake McCully of Cross-Eyed airbrushing, together they are taking art to a new level. In 2015, over two hundred thousand dollars has been raised for local Charites in Calgary through a partnership with Bill Brown of Elevated Auctions, Chris and YYC Charity. Chris’s charitable activities were also recognized in October 2015 by Vigor International with a Humanitarian Award. Today, Chris has several celebrity clients and contributes to charities. Chris has worked with the Kennedys Waterkeepers Alliance in which he was the feature artist, and was able to show his work along with actor Pierce Brosnan. Chris has an amazing ability to express art in a diverse range of mediums: from exact photorealism to the inimitable abstracts. More often than not his pictures are a unique blend of both. What I love best about my brother’s work is... the vivid emotions I feel when viewing his audacious color combinations. We have only seen the tip of his natural, raw, untapped talent. Meet Scott and Amy Fralick, the smart and creative couple who are chronicling their adventure with pregnancy later in life on their new podcast, 40 & Knocked Up!  You may know them as two-thirds of The Frolics, a surf-punk band that started in Nashville and is now part of Edmonton's music scene. You may also know Scott as a broadcast journalist who is now at CITY-TV. But they are also parents who decided after 40 that they wanted to have another child. It has not been easy, and they had trouble finding useful and non-boring resources, so they're making them themselves: Amy is writing a book, and the two of them are making this podcast. In this episode, you'll hear about how an epiphany at NorthwestFest's LunchPods series led to the creation of the podcast; the therapeutic value of talking through a difficult experience, even if there's a microphone in front of you; how the Internet has changed everything for both music and journalism; the story of the podcast's infectious theme song; how to make an interesting podcast rooted in your own experience or passion, but relevant and interesting to other people; and what happens to 40 & Knocked Up! when the baby comes. This episode is also available in Apple Podcasts, on Google Play, on SoundCloud and on Stitcher. Scott and Amy made a couple of local podcast recommendations: Start the Music by Kat Griffiths, also known as one-sixth of Verity!; The Broadcast by Alex Zabjek and Trisha Estabrooks. We mentioned in particular the episode on male feminism with Reakash Walters and Andrew Knack, and the live show on which Scott was the guest at NorthwestFest. You can subscribe to 40 & Knocked Up! in Apple Podcasts, and you can find the podcast on Facebook, too. Check out The Frolics on CD Baby, and on Twitter: @TheFrolicsBand. Seen and Heard in Edmonton will be a proud member of the Alberta Podcast Network, powered by ATB. Learn more about the network and sign up for updates here. This week's Seen and Heard in Edmonton is brought to you by YESS Quest, a 24-hour gaming marathon to be held at Northlands Expo Centre on Aug. 19-20 in support of Youth Empowerment & Support Services.  On this episode, you'll hear YESS board member and Diablo aficionado Ashley Janssen talk about how to get involved in YESS Quest and who you will be helping. If you want to play games all night to raise money for a good cause, or you want to pledge your support for other gamers, visit yessquest.com.
