The Tasmanian beer scene was a little slower that other states to get on board with the craft beer idea, but in recent years the number of small breweries in the state has increased. As they say in the classics, a rising lifts all boats, and as brewers around the state have increased their brewing knowledge, the whole industry has benefited. And now, Tasmanian breweries are producing some world class beer, and utilising the amazing natural resources available in the state.A few years ago, a small brewery popped up in Hobart's Northern suburbs, it was called Fox Friday and was run part time by a husband and wife duo. Unfortunately for those two individuals, it didn't work out for them. But, with every cloud there is a silver lining and a couple of Western Australians, by way of Houston, Thailand and Singapore decided they would purchase the brewery as-is and make it their own. This is the story of how Ben and Sarah Hooper took a brewery, and the brand they inherited with it, and transformed it from being just another craft beer brand into what my be the new hype leader in the Tasmanian market. In this episode, Ben and I talk about:How they made the Fox Friday brand their ownHow Covid-19 has allowed them the time to build their online store, and how that is a key part of their strategy moving forward...weekly online releases! Some of the amazing breweries he learned from while living in Houston, and how their dreams of starting a brewery there were dashedHow you don't use a farm cube on the back of a ute when you need to transport your beer get it into cans without a canning lineBuilding the hype! How Fox Friday is ready to capitalise on the Haze Craze! And what beers and breweries get his hazy juices flowing.

We are in the midst of a haze craze in beer. But for Pacific Northwesterners, it's not the first. Starting in the 1980s and continuing for a decade, one style dominated brewing with pervasiveness not seen since. The style has almost entirely vanished, but Patrick and Jeff return to their youth to revisit hefeweizen's salad days. Photo credit: Oregon Hops and Brewing Archive (OSU)

When Travis Fritts and Nate Rykse started Old Nation Brewing Co. they brought 14+ years of brewing education and experience with them. They'd dedicated their lives to learning the technical aspects of brewing as well as the differences in brewing methods and ingredients across different cultures. The result is a brewery that blends these different methods and ingredients to produce unique beers. Initially, the beer they offered was "very traditional and technically accurate." Director of Growth & Strategy Mark Logusz recounts, "The beer was great, but it was not what anybody wanted to drink." With that realization, Fritts engaged the members of a local beer group to talk about new styles and after some discussion invited a few out to help with a pilot batch. The result was the first batch of M-43. Logusz sat down with us recently during M-43's Atlanta market launch. We chat about "testing the waters" in Atlanta at the Day of the Juice festival, trying to keep up with the demand for hazy IPAs, the difference in pasties and pasties, Old Nation's non-hazy offerings, and the International Festival of Lagers. On our quest to visit every brewery in Georgia in 2018 we visited Abide Brewing in Newnan and caught Line Creek Brewing Company's opening day. We also joined Wrecking Bar Brewpub to celebrate their 7th anniversary, and took a trip to SweetWater to sample their new 420 Strain G13 IPA, brewed with cannabis terpenes and hemp flavor. In the news this week Chinese-made brewing equipment gets exempted from tariffs, American aluminum price hikes raise some questions, a Swedish brewery prints tweets on beer foam, World Cup fans cause a beer shortage in Moscow, and London's Beavertown Brewery sells a minority stake to Heineken. Next week we're talking Beer and BBQ with The Beer Sommelier Matt Simpson and Smyrna Beer Market owner Brandon King. Just in time for your 4th of July planning. In this episode, we’re going to get into what we didn't discuss last week in our Haze Craze episode, the makings of a speedy brew day! Most of us love the time we spend working with our gear and ingredients, but most of would still prefer to use less of our valuable time doing it. We’re also going to discuss that “homebrew extract taste” that people often reference when tasting a beer that didn’t come out right by trying an older extract kit against an all grain version and we’ll judge a local customer’s beer on air.
In this episode, we invited the guys from the soon-to-be brewpub Turning Point Beer into the studio to talk about what they have in store and help us discuss what has been labeled The Haze Craze. It started with North Eastern breweries taking a new route by changing their blend of the East and West Coast IPA into the New England/North East/Vermont IPA: a hazy and often opaque version of an IPA that tones down the bitterness, focuses on hops with big flavor, and yet, leaves plenty of room for the malt and yeast to stand out on their own. So, love them or hate them, these “juicy” and “pulpy” beers have made a big splash in both the craft beer and homebrew world so we want to devote some time to them!
