Author Mark Seal joins Tim to talk with Mark about the subject of his popular new book about the making of The Godfather movie. The book is called, “Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli.” Mark has is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair where he's covered scandals, history makers and pop culture icons. This episode was originally released January 10, 2022. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/221_-_The_Making_of_The_Godfather_auphonic.mp3 The Godfather was the first of three motion pictures directed by Francis Ford Coppola about the fictional Corleone crime family. The box office hit was released in 1972, and was followed by sequels in 1974 and 1990. The original Godfather film was inspired by the novel of the same name that was written by Mario Puzo and published in 1969. All of the films were distributed by Paramount Pictures and generated roughly $512 million worldwide. The film franchise won nine Academy Awards. This coming March will mark the 50th anniversary of when the Godfather first hit the big screens. The movie centers on Don Vito Corleone and his family. Marlon Brando plays the Don. The Don declines an offer to get into the narcotics business with another crime family, which is led by Virgil Sollozzo. This creates problems. Don Corleone becomes a marked man. Don Corleone's oldest boy is Sonny Corleone. He's played by James Caan. Sonny takes over the crime family while his father recovers. Meanwhile, Sonny's little brother Michael – who is played by Al Pacino – is recruited to exact revenge on Sollozzo. As the gang wars heat up, Michael is sent to Sicily to lay low for a while. That's where he meets his first wife. The violence follows him there when his young bride is killed. Back in New York, Michael's older brother Sonny is killed in an ambush attack. By now, Don Vito Corleone has recovered from the assassination attempt on his life, but he decides to turn over the control of the family business to Michael. There are plots and sub-plots, but through it all, Michael emerges as a force to be reckoned with, and Al Pacino goes from a relative unknown to a Hollywood super star. There's a new book out about gang violence in Denver, and it's causing quite a stir. Award-winning journalist Julian Rubinstein spent seven years reporting the story of Terrance Roberts, a former gang member turned anti-gang activist who shot someone before a peace rally he himself had organized on September 20, 2013. Julian says Terrance's story has been widely misunderstood, and he hopes to correct the record with his new book, “The Holly: Five Bullets, One Gun, and the Struggle to Save An American Neighborhood.” They both join host Bree Davies on the show today to talk about that day in 2013, the nature of gang violence in Denver, and what it all means for Terrance's neighborhood, Northeast Park Hill. Pigskin Past is part of the https://sportshistorynetwork.com/ (Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Your Favorite Sport's Yesteryear). EPISODE SUMMARY The next few editions of The Pigskin Past will explore great teams in great years. They will all have one thing in common, however. They will all be teams that had a super season and went to the Super Bowl, only to lose that Super Bowl. The first of these teams that I would like to discuss is the 1972 Washington Redskins. Yes, in 1972, the Washington Football Team was actually called the Washington Redskins. In 1971, their new head coach George Allen, told his players after losing their first playoff game in years that the next year, they would be a championship team. Allen did not lie. In 1972, Washington managed to win the NFC Championship. In a nearly 20-year playing career across the 1960s American Football League and 1970s NFL, defensive end Ron McDole (The Dancing Bear: My Eighteen Years in the Trenches of the AFL and NFL) experienced pro football’s modern-day coming-of-age from inside his old-school, two-bar helmet. From 1961-1978, McDole played in over 250 professional games, including championship runs with the AFL Buffalo Bills (1964, 1965) and a Super Bowl appearance with the NFL Washington Redskins in 1972. A cagey and deceptively agile athlete, McDole wreaked havoc on football’s best offenses as part of a Bills defensive line (including left tackle Jim Dunaway, right tackle Tom Sestak, and right end Tom Day) that held opponents without a rushing touchdown for 17 straight games across 1964-65. His twelve career interceptions remain a pro record for defensive linemen. Traded by the Bills in 1970, he was given new life in Washington as one of the most famous members of George Allen s game-smart veterans known as the “Over the Hill Gang.” Through it all, McDole was known and loved by teammates and foes alike for his knowledge and skill on the field and his ability to have fun off it. In this revealing conversation with host Tim Hanlon, McDole describes: the unique camaraderie of playing in small-market Buffalo and in the upstart AFL; the reality of needing off-season jobs to pay the bills and make ends meet; the continual magnanimity of Bills’ owner Ralph Wilson; and (at 45:00) the price he and many of his fellow players are now paying health-wise for playing the game they loved, with very little acknowledgement or support from the NFL. The Third Men Podcast is proud to present an all-new exclusive extended interview with the talented, the soulful, the legendary Johnny Walker! As a founding member of seminal blues rock revivalists The Soledad Brothers, he (along with fellow co-founder Ben Swank) would help define the sound of the garage rock revolution of the turn of the millennium and provide a musical companion piece to friends and contemporaries The White Stripes. Of course Third Man fans also know Johnny's work from his incredible slide guitar on the Stripes' eponymous debut album, but his collaborations with Jack over the years also include cameo appearances from Stripes on Soledad releases such as 2002's Steal Your Soul And Dare Your Spirit To Move as well as Jack's now-legendary snow shovel solo on their debut Italy Records single. In addition to his days as a Soledad Brother, Johnny can be heard on releases from Henry and June, Cut In the Hill Gang and All-Seeing Eyes to name but a few, and we discuss his storied career this week in one of our most unique extended interviews to date! We here at the Third Men podcast would like to thank Johnny for joining us on our show and we hope you'll all partake in his fabulously detailed insect removal advice!
