Survivor Series 1990 is one of those shows that has a bit of lore and mystique surrounding it because of two debuts. One debuting superstar would go on to last 30 years in the WWF/E, and the other wouldn't last 30 days. Welcome to The Undertaker....and the Gobbledygooker! This week Chris and Tony are joined by Gilly from the History Bhoys Abroad podcast, to discuss Gilly's first ever WWF show on VHS, that brought him to the wrestling table and ensured his fandom would last until this day. There is discussion around the comparison between WCW and WWF in 1990, the time period in question being the height of the gimmick era, and why Sgt Slaughter had a limited shelf life in the early nineties. We also dive deep into the reasons why Gilly wasn't the biggest Hogan fan, the perfection of a certain Mr Perfect in one of the greatest elimination matches ever, have a triple threat mark out over Bret Hart, and try to fathom what the hell The Ultimate Warrior was actually saying in any of his promos on any given night... Also, as usual, Chris & Tony mark out for AEW, and sell Gilly on the benefits of watching Dynamite. Did we convert him back into watching modern day wrestling? Check out this bumper edition of the Scottish Smarks to find out! P.S - search History Bhoys Abroad for all good Celtic History related content. It's been an emotive week for everyone connected with Celtic. Billy McNeill lost his battle with illness this week and, as the tributes have been flowing in, we feel it's only right that we add our very own tribute to the man simply known as 'Cesar' As long as there's a Celtic, there will be a Billy McNeill. We give his career a review and understand just how good he was. We were also lucky enough to have time to speak to Willie, who is now based in Australia, about his time at Celtic. We would like to highlight that we had some technical issues in this part of the podcast and we hope the audio is sufficient for you to hear and enjoy. Join us. The subject of this podcast really needs no introduction. It would be a waste of time trying to do him justice via the medium of short-note writing. Just read his name and you’ll understand what we mean: Daniel Fergus McGrain. We try our best to paint a picture of his value (in every sense of the word) as a Celtic legend, while gushing about just how differently cut he was. This is HBA #50. Brian McClair was a fascinatingly successful striker for Celtic during the mid 80s. Considered a genuine talent, his time is not really recalled as much as others during the same era. Four years at Celtic Park, the home of his boyhood heroes, saw him return a fantastic amount of goals and assists. On this episode we detail those 4 years. One from the back catalogue. Episode 21 sees us dive into the mid 50s for a player who's bloodline runs deep within the history of Celtic. A very famous great uncle and a famous father, but John Divers Jr's career is worth recognising and remembering. A player from the Jimmy McGrory era, working with Jock Stein in the reserves before one final season at Celtic with Jock at the helm of the first team. He left us right before the Golden Era. He scored 102 goals in 232 games. An interesting man by all accounts who played one small but significant role in the domination that followed his own time. We also reviewed the Albion Rovers tie and watch the cup draw. Join us: Twitter: @bhoysabroad Facebook: facebook.com/HistoryBhoysAbroad Gmail: @historybhoys

2018 may be new and exciting but we do the rich past instead. The History Bhoys are back from their fattening winter break with a pod on one of our prize pricks: Mark 'Marko' Viduka. After an unusual rise through the game, we signed him for big money in 1998 before he subsequently went AWOL a few days later...a sign of the controversy which seemed to follow him throughout his time at the club. A 4 month loan spell is the topic of History Bhoys Abroad episode 23. Craig Bellamy was signed on the final day of the transfer window in 2005 and we discuss his impact during these months and how successful he was. The year after Larsson left, the final season of Martin O'Neill's tenure and with Celtic starting to tighten financially, Bellamy's arrival came at an awkward time. Celtic's history is a long and successful one. From the inception of the club, we were seen as one of the pioneers in Scottish football becoming a professional body and leading the charge with breaking records. Around the turn of the 20th century, under the supervision of Willie Maley, Celtic embarked on a league winning run that was a first for Scotland. Between 1904-10, Celtic won 6 league titles in a row. An incredible record with an incredible group of players. On HBA episode #41, we look back at the run we go on, the players, the form and more. If you wish to hear more about Jimmy Quinn's Celtic Graves event, it can be found on the Hail Hail Media network from circa August 2014. We delve into the archives to share our review of a Jekyll and Hyde European Cup tie from 1980.
For the 40th episode of History Bhoys Abroad, we look back at the career of one of Celtic's most loved players, Johnny Doyle. We discuss his beginnings at Ayr Utd, his move to his boyhood heroes Celtic, his Celtic career: the highs and the lows. A winner of three Scottish League titles and two Scottish Cups, he was a son of Viewpark, home to another wonderful character and Celt, Jimmy Johnstone. Jock Stein signed young Johnny in 1976. Doylie as he was known to his friends and teammates, truly was a fan who lived his dream, infamous for his thunderous temper. He wasn't the greatest player of his generation technically, but what he lacked in technique he made up for in commitment to the Celtic Cause. A man who was equally at home on the park in the hoops or in the stand with his scarf, “Johnny Doyle was the epitome of the phrase ‘a true Celt'”. Thanks to Charlie and the Bhoys for the song. It’s been a quiet few weeks from us but we’re sure the general hilarity of Scottish football has kept you entertained. In saying that, we haven’t gone away and luckily we have a classic from the archives to keep you entertained. Listen back to our episode on one of Celtic’s lost but wholly treasured talents, the mercurial George Connelly. We had the pleasure to have his son David on to talk about a quite special Celtic career. We look back into his humble beginnings in the Juniors and how he was in awe of Jock long before their joint sojourn at Paradise. The conversation turns to his rise as a precocious talent as a youth at Celtic Park as a leading light of the Quality Street Kids and into his development as one of Scotland’s greatest ever talents before his subsequent disillusionment and early retirement from the game. We found it a fascinating topic to research and David helps us to see it through his own unique perspective. Join us. twitter.com/BhoysAbroad Historybhoys@gmail.com facebook.com/HistoryBhoysAbroad
We rewind back to the 2003/04 season, when the German champions and European behemoth rocked up to Celtic Park. Oliver Kahn, Michael Ballack, Roy Makaay and more. Larsson, Agathe, Sutton, Petrov and more. We discuss each game and how far Celtic had come since Seville just months before. We compare Sutton and Hartson and ask if we were to remove one player from the starting 11 in these ties to swap for Boruc, which player would we choose. We round off with a quick chat about the Dundee game and Graeme in Bamberg joins us for a preview of the upcoming Allianz Arena tie in Germany. The History Bhoys Abroad are on episode 38 and today we present a player profile of someone who racked up 48 goals in 217 appearances during some of our darkest years. He is none other than John Collins. Signed in 1990 as a fresh-faced young stud, he showed that there was substance to go with his style as he developed into a midfield lynchpin, capable of dragging some of his less than stellar teammates with him and creating some moments of magic to keep Celtic ticking over during our doldrum years. His departure on a bosman after six years with the Hoops left a sour taste in many fans' mouths but history has been kind to him, even when he departed last summer from his brief as assistant manager. Fresh from their summer holidays, the History Bhoys Abroad are back abroad to talk about the much groaned about Shaun Maloney. The premise behind our Know Your History series is simple: regular guys in the Celtic world that contribute towards the community come on and chat about 3 games that are special to them. Today we are joined by Kevin Smith better known as Smiddy or Smiddy1888cfc, for those of you on the Huddleboard. Kevin is relatively well known among Celtic fans in the Glasgow scene as not only does he help run one of the best known Celtic CSCs (the Saltmarket CSC), he also performs in a number of well-known Celtic and Irish pubs around the city, performing with his band and by himself as a solo artist. A regular face in the ADBS, he talks us through his music career, his love for Lubo, a trip up to Tannadice for Tommy and a post-match Champions League party in a ritzy Moscow hotel with Russian gangsters. As we look to improve on our matchday one humping, the History Bhoys look back at the previous time we played Wednesday's opponents Anderlecht in the heady days of 2003. It was the tie where a young Vincent Kompany was ragdolled by a bulky Welshman, so much so that it led to Sir Alex Ferguson making one of his most glaring errors of judgement. We also discuss why we seemed to have these kind of nights under O'Neill (both the good and the bad) and just how far we could've that team got that season. We also look back at our routine win against SPL cannon fodder at the weekend and ahead to Wednesday's all-important match. With enough Stella Artois to satisfy an overweight Mexican living in Glasgow, it's sure to be another great away trip for the Bhoys. We were joined by Paul of the Shamrock magazine to talk about how his Celtic periodical is developing and why it is a must for any Celtic fan with an interest in the club's history. We were joined by the resident Norwegian football expert in Scotland Christian Wulff, better known for his work on the 90 minute cynic podcast aswell as the football periodical ‘The Supplement'. We spoke about his upbringing in Norway and how his strange link to a lower league Scottish team has him on their Wikipedia page. We also speak extensively about the glory days of the 1990s for Norwegian football and about his love for Liverpool FC. This was an enjoyable chat that is oncemore something a little bit different from the norm. If you like the work we do them please remember to subscribe to the Facebook page, just search History Bhoys Abroad and subscribe to the pod itself on historybhoys.libsyn.com. On the eve of the first Champions League group stage match against the Qatar-funded Parisians, the History Bhoys dip back into the archives to relive the European Cup Winners Cup second round ties from 1995/96. Rai, Djorkaeff, Loko, Lama, Le Guen and Mahe (!), all comfortably swanned about Celtic Park to send a transitional Tommy Burns’ side spinning out the cup. Amongst many things, we discussed the impact of the stadium, the awfully gifted midfield they had and how French football massively underachieves given the riches and their national talent. We also give the 2017 first round tie a short preview. Aller vert et blanc! Join us. twitter.com/BhoysAbroad historybhoys@gmail.com facebook.com/HistoryBhoysAbroad
The History Bhoys Abroad are on episode 35 and today we present a player profile of someone who racked up 451 appearances for Glasgow's finest as well as scoring 101 goals. His name is Alec Thomson. In the 1920s, when Gallacher, McGrory and Maley's names rang out, Celtic had men like Thomson on hand to deliver balls into the box for McGrory to crash home. Alec Thomson was a tricky, reliable player that Maley called upon for 12 years and a man that earned the nickname EverReady. An oft-forgotten and awkward time due to the lack of trophies, players like Thomson were Celtic's star men that consistently turned out for the Hoops between the War years. We felt it was correct to give a man recognition who proudly sits in the 100 goal club. Join us. twitter.com/BhoysAbroad historybhoys@gmail.com facebook.com/HistoryBhoysAbroad
The sabbatical for the History Bhoys is at an end. We are back and we've wound it right back to 1937/38. Celtic's golden jubilee year. We bring you episode #34 on the Empire Exhibition Cup. Willie Maley is still the main man, who still has his main man til halfway through this season. We speak about other players that are important in helping the club this season and give some context to the build-up of the tournament. We look at what it meant for the club to compete in such a tournament at such a memorable time in history and what this particular wonderfully crafted trophy meant to Celtic beyond being just another cup. John Glass. A name every Celtic fan should get familiar with. In the late 1800s, when Brother Walfrid was looking to create a football club to help support the needy in Glasgow, he called upon such men as John Glass to help his vision become a reality. A tenacious and charismatic man, Glass was at the forefront of Celtic Football Club becoming a reality and oversaw massive changes in the club; from the first major trophies, to securing the land for the stadium, to signing celebrated players and much more. His story is one we have tried to discuss on History Bhoys Abroad #32. We hope we have done him justice. Join us. twitter.com/BhoysAbroad historybhoys@gmail.com facebook.com/HistoryBhoysAbroad
Episode #22 of the regular HBA is on John Thomson, The Prince of Goalkeepers. Aged 22. Celtic and Scotland goalkeeper. Sixty four clean sheets. First team regular aged 18. His life was no normal story. A life cut short due to a split second accident. But his impact on football and within his local community in Fife resonates even now. He made his debut 90 years ago on February 12th 1927. We round up the podcast with a review of the Motherwell match. Join us. The History Bhoys are back from their enforced summer sabbatical with a pod on a wee spice lord: Eyal Berkovic. We recording live from Belgrade. Signed under the instantly forgettable John Barnes/Kenny Dalglish reign, he came with a high reputation for being the linchpin behind the strikers, but not only that, he had a reputation for being a bit of a trouble maker...and he only cost a mere 5 million pounds plus. We give a quick preview to the extremely important Rosenborg tie on Wednesday from an unusual location and also give a little extra abroad bonus thing: Gary and Tony attended Partizan Belgrade v Javor in the Serbian SuperLiga.
