Huge breaking news on Monday morning as Dundee wielded the axe on gaffer Tony Docherty. The decision came less than 24 hours after the Dee secured their Premiership status with a 2-0 victory at St Johnstone, sparking a pitch invasion at McDiarmid Park. Was it the right call by the Dee? And will Shaun Maloney be the next man in the Dens Park hotseat? While there was no such drama across the road to begin the week – there was plenty on Saturday. We toast a wonderful season from Dundee United after their gutsy 2-1 win over Aberdeen secured European football in the maiden campaign back in the Premiership. We lavish praise on Declan Gallagher, discuss the ice-cool Sam Dalby and pay tribute to auxiliary right-back Louis Moult! There is also chat about how the Tangerines will evolve next season amid the challenge of continental competition. Sadly, we must also chew over the despicable assault that saw Jack Mackenzie struck by a seat lobbed by an Aberdeen fan. Folding in those scenes in Perth, we ask what's next for Scottish football's relationship with supporters? Dundee reporter George Cran is joined by Dundee United correspondent Alan Temple and presenter Tom Duthie. Twa Teams, One Street is proud to be supported by SPAR Scotland. Large fish is on the menu as Adam serves up a hearty end of season special. Sports journalist Harry McArthur of the Down the Slope Hibs podcast discusses his one positive memory from a frustrating season at Easter Road, the departures of Jack Ross and Shaun Maloney, the mentality that will need to change under Lee Johnson, 2016 Scottish Cup Final memories, whether or not Ryan Porteous deserves his reputation, the change he'd like to see in Scottish football, his work with the NFL, his run-in with a former Hibs striker turned pundit and the highs and lows of his 13 days as an Eintracht Frankfurt supporter. Making his second appearance on the show, radio presenter, podcast host and award-winning comedian Mark Nelson talks about Queen of the South's relegation. Queens legend Wullie Gibson, how Craig Levein unsettles him, Scotland's upcoming playoff, how he uses music to elicit personal stories from interviewees, the reality of life for comedians at the Fringe, the comedians he's learned from, the Scottish football icon who would make a good stand-up, the joy of work-in-progress gigs, his recently released stand-up special, confusing legendary singer Don McLean on his radio show and his 2021/22 Scottish football cult hero. Adam puts questions to his guests from social media, asks them to help him debunk a myth involving Rangers and a beloved breakfast TV personality, tests them on their 2021/22 knowledge, attempts to tell the story of the season in less than 140 seconds and reveals which Hibs legend's image he now owns in the form of a mouse mat. DAIZEN Maeda stole the headlines with a quickfire debut goal against Hibs but it was his countryman Reo Hatate who was the undoubted star of the show with a Man of the Match performance in the heart of Celtic's midfield. The Japanese star showed us exactly why Ange Postecoglou was so keen to secure his signature and already looks like he'll slot seamlessly into the starting XI. A full Celtic Park welcomed the team back after the winter break and the Bhoys didn't disappoint with an impressive performance against Shaun Maloney's side. Yosuke Ideguchi joined Maeda and Hatate in making his debut, but Carl Starfelt, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Greg Taylor also showed their quality on the night. With our Glasgow rivals dropping points at Pittodrie we're now within 4 points of the top of the table with some huge matches in store ahead of the derby on 2ndof February. The January transfer window remains oipen for another couple of weeks but with no activity in or out in over a week Ange has indicated our signings may be done. We'll monitor that space closely for any changes. Tino, James & Sinky were on the mics to discuss all of the above and more. The Hoops can now enjoy 3 weeks of rest and recuperation before taking to the field again on Monday 17th of January against Shaun Maloney's Hibs. On the road again. Vancouver Whitecaps are on the road again. And that can only mean one thing, it's match preview podcast time. As the 'Caps head east to Chicago to fight the Fire, we bring you a very special preview show, and one of our best episodes yet, even if we do say so ourselves! Both team are winless, and draw specialists. Surely that can only mean one thing?! Head coaches Carl Robinson and Frank Yallop set up the match for us before we bring you four exclusive one on one interviews with players from both teams. Chicago's new Designated Player Shaun Maloney is first up, as he talks about making the move to MLS, what he knows about the league, what he expects and his hopes for the Fire this season? Note, despite two Scots blathering on, there are no subtitles available for their chat! Keeping it in the UK, English midfielder, and former Whitecap, Matt Watson drops by to talk about his time in Vancouver, the quickness of his move to Chicago, his first MLS goal and how he's settled in as a Fire starter amidst all the squad changes. Watson may be a familiar face to Whitecaps fans, but Vancouver have a familiar face to Fire fans in the form of goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi. The 'Caps number two keeper chats about what brought him over to MLS and the Fire from Italy, how he handles being a back up and lets us know if goalkeeping coach Marius Rovde is as crazy as we think he is! And there's still time to end the show with another chat with Chicago coach Frank Yallop. The former Vancouverite talks about just what went wrong in his first season in Chicago, building a squad he can call his own and what Fire fans can expect from their team this season. Phew! All the game build up you can shake a stick at, so have a listen.
The MLS offseason isn't going to slow down for a little snow at the league office, and the guys talk Tim Cahill, Laurent Ciman's last moments with Standard Liege, Toronto FC and Simon Borg survival techniques before the Chicago Fire's newest DP, Shaun Maloney, joins following his first-ever training session with the club. In the second segment, it's all United States all the time. First, the U-20s bucked a terrible start at the CONCACAF U-20 Championships to qualify for the World Cup. Who might have a senior team career in front of them? And speaking of the senior team, who should start against Chile? Will Jurgen Klinsmann play a 3-5-2? In the mailbag, a Minnesota for MLS supporter chimes in, club loyalties are debated and Simon's role model is honored ... without Borg in attendance. Email us at ExtraTime@MLSsoccer.com or tweet us at @ExtraTimeRadio. And make sure you check out our West Coast brethren at March to the Match every Wednesday!
