Hello Rank Squad! We have our Champions League finalists, after PSG joined Inter in the showpiece event by beating Arsenal 2-1 at the Parc des Princes to progress 3-1 on aggregate. The game might not have had the verve and sparkle of Tuesday's semi, but there was plenty to discuss all the same here on UCL Takeaway. Arsenal started fast, but couldn't find the killer blow to leave the tie in the balance - thanks to some particularly impressive goalkeeping once again from Gigi Donnarumma in the PSG net - and then Fabian Ruiz landed a killer jab of his own, striking home from the edge of the box after Arsenal failed to clear a set piece. Vitinha missed a (very harsh) penalty, before Achraf Hakimi made it 2-0 with a striker's finish, and whilst Bukayo Saka pulled one back and Arsenal had their chances to find a leveller, it was Luis Enrique's charges who saw the game out, with no finishing flourish from his former apprentice Mikel Arteta in the other dugout. We discuss the game, as well as where it leaves Arsenal ahead of this summer, whether PSG's transformation into the team we have seen in recent months makes them favourites for the final, whether João Neves is a N'Golo Kante regen, where Arsenal need to upgrade to reach that next level, and loads more besides. It's Ranks! Pedro and Johnny come in hot with pre-match nerves, fan rituals, and full-bodied hopium as they dissect what it'll take for the Gunners to pull off a famous result in Paris. From Champions League heartbreak memories to superstitions, they talk Timber's fitness, Partey's redemption arc, and why a 1-0 deficit might be the best possible motivator for this team. They break down the PSG pressure cooker, the Dembele fitness gamble, and how to unleash Saka without risking Timber getting roasted. If you need to mentally prep for the biggest Arsenal match in years, this is the pod. Hype. Insight. Tactical chat. Spurs tears (implied). Come join the audio speakeasy.
It doesn't take PSG long to score at Arsenal in the semi-final of the Champions League - will the Gunners be able to overturn the deficit in Paris next week? Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway here on Ranks FC, and our first episode of the semi-finals, looking back at the game between Arsenal and PSG in North London, where Luis Enrique's side came out the victors, taking a 1-0 win with them back to the Parc des Princes for next week's second leg. We discuss it all in great detail - looking at a mesmerising first 25 minutes from the Parisiens, as well as the way Arsenal dug themselves back into the game briefly, before PSG spurned some late chances to make their lead much more secure. We talk the role of Declan Rice, the absence of Thomas Partey, a star turn from Myles Lewis-Skelly, the brilliance of João Neves, Ousmane Dembélé's free-role and how he picked up space, as well as the difference in experience between the two managers, the atmosphere and how PSG quietened it down early on, and loads more besides. Hello Rank Squad! It's time for this week's first Champions League Takeaway - looking back at Tuesday's Quarter Final second legs, where both PSG and Barcelona emerged with qualification intact, but with their reputations bruised and having been handed on-the-night losses by Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund, who were both excellent. In the absence of Dean, who is flying back to San Diego, Jack is joined by football podcast royalty in Mike Zimmermann - to talk through both of the games and discuss the ramifications in more detail. We start with Aston Villa's impressive 3-2 win over PSG, where the Parisien favourites were given an almighty scare in the second half by Unai Emery's charges, who managed to break free of PSG's impressive counter-attacking hold after the break, going hell for leather and finding themselves some Gigi Donnarumma magic away from taking Luis Enrique's men to extra time. Then in Part Two, we head to the Westfalenstadion, where Dortmund had very little to lose, but managed to expose the Barcelona high line enough to give the Yellow Wall plenty to shout about. Serhou Guirassy's hat-trick had Barça very worried for a time, and although the Catalans progressed, they were subjected to defeat in a single game for the first time in 2025. It's Ranks! Débrief de Aston Villa - PSG, quart de finale retour de Ligue des Champions. Le PSG se qualifie pour les demi-finales de la Ligue des Champions malgré sa défaite à Aston Villa.
Hello Rank Squad! It's time for this week's second Champions League Takeaway - looking back at Wednesday's Quarter Final first legs, where PSG roared back from 1-0 down to beat Aston Villa 3-1 and Barcelona romped to yet another astounding win, routinely dismantling a discombobulated Dortmund 4-0. We start with PSG and wonder if anybody could have held up against the power of their attacking might last night - looking at the emergence of Desire Doué as a bona-fide starter and wonderkid, as well as the devastating directness of Kvicha Kvaratskhelia - before going a bit deeper into a discussion of how Luis Enrique has moulded this club to one in his own image - where the team comes first, but individual brilliance is actively encouraged as well. Then in Part Two it's time to head to Catalunya, to take a deep dive into how Barcelona pretty much killed this tie stone dead in the first leg, breaking a host of records in the process. All three of the front line of Raphinha (controversially), Lamine Yamal, and Robert Lewandowski were on the scoresheet - with Lewy making it 29 goals in 28 games against Dortmund since leaving them in 2014. Ouch. It's Ranks! On this episode, Patrick and Neel breakdown the action from the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. They start with Arsenal's 3-0 victory over Real Madrid, in large part due to Declan Rice's 2 freekick goals. Then comes Inter Milan's 2-1 win over Bayern Munich. Was it an upset? Next, Unai Emery and Aston Villa got out to an early lead, but PSG won 3-1. Lastly, Barcelona trounced Dortmund, 4-0.
Hello Rank Squad! Dean's back in London, so it's less of a Transatlantic Job this week, but that doesn't mean there's not still plenty to discuss. Today, we're looking at the Champions League Quarter Finalists, but in a slightly different way - examining who the most important player is for each of the eight teams remaining in the competition, from the perspectives of how they've played so far, as well as who is most likely to step up going forward. We take the eight teams in turn ahead of their QF matchups, thinking about star performers across the course of the competition, but also about which player their opposition would remove from these games if they were given a choice to do so - giving us some interesting names and discussions around how we rank players in systems. We finish by trying to pick a top three each, but we found that was a harder task than either of us envisaged to begin with! It's Ranks! Welcome dear listener to the latest episode. I'm Paul and I am joined by Enrique and Daz. So the Champions League journey is over for another season after the Reds lose in a penalty shoot out to PSG. Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final is not a game we will want to dwell on much after today. Part One - a 1-0 loss at home to PSG.xG 1.59 to 2.63, (Dembele's goal was 0.95) - 1.51 to 2.13 in normal time (0.10 in the second half). A lot of nearly moments - the offside goal, the Quansah header, Salah had 4 shots.Plan for 90 to 120 and the penalties. Probably not a good coaching move to practice penalties before this game when you have the leadPart Two - Newcastle at Wembley. xG 1.05 to 1.93 - 0.8 to 1.18 second half - First time we've gone down by 2 goals this season. Their game plan worked out better than they could ever have hoped. Would love to have done better on the Burn header. What was our plan? Play it long? The line up, tiredness, lack of sharpness?2 narratives can be true at the same time:John Brooks, Joelinton - 14 fouls against us with 66% possession - 10 against them on 34% possession. 2 yellow cards for them for time wasting.Look out for the extra look ahead episode. We will be back after the Everton game. Thanks to Daz and Enrique for joining me, Paul. And most of all, thank you dear listener for joining us. If you enjoyed the pod, please share it with a friend. Hello Rank Squad! In a bit of a break from tradition, and after witnessing an absorbing encounter between Liverpool and PSG at Anfield, we decided this week might be a good one to switch things up and discuss the thing everyone will be discussing come Wednesday morning - the action from the Champions League, so this is the first of two UCL Takeaway episodes that will be with you this week. We start on Merseyside, where football reminded us it's a funny old game. Liverpool were outmatched in Paris last Wednesday, but came away with a 1-0 win against PSG; but on a night where they gave a far better account of themselves at home, they ended up losing the game 1-0 and being knocked out on penalties. Work that one out. We give PSG their due for a mighty performance over two legs, and discuss just how far this very talented side could go in this competition, as well as looking at what Liverpool might have done differently, and where the squad might need to be strengthened to push forwards again next season. Then in Part Two, we move over to the rest of the action, dissecting Barcelona's 3-1 win over Benfica where Lamine Yamal and Raphinha set some more records, as well as Pedri's astounding performance in the heart of midfield. We touch on Bayern, who Dean correctly backed in our power ranking episode, and how Leverkusen melted in the heat of the knockout stages; and finish with Inter, who made light work of Feyenoord even with a heavily rotated squad, and who are ticking along nicely in this competition. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
Welcome dear listener to the latest episode. I'm Paul and I am joined by Daz and Enrique. So the Reds went to Paris for the first time since 2022 and again one of the goalies had a man of the match performance that prevented the dominant team from winning - this time it went in our favor. We are going to review PSG away, and Southampton at home which left us 15 points ahead after this weekend and then look ahead to the return leg and then the Carabao Cup final. 3 finals Slot had said on Friday.Part One - Paris Saint Germain away - this was a tough watch until the 87th minute:xG - 1.78 to 0.16 First half - the blanket was in the wrong place. Were they just so good (so much better than anyone we've played) or were we bad in tactics and performance?Lots of Konate and Kvaratskheilia, Napoli away vibes, Alisson Becker - wowSecond half - created a better defensive platform - 0.42 xG. Best xG shot of the second half was 0.07 from Harvey Elliott. Dembele's right foot shots from distance were a sign of frustration and tiredness. They tried to avoid attacking down the middle - no surprise there…‘Lucky' - Liverpool had an xG of 2.19 in the final against Real in 2022 but didn't score, Real had an xG of 0.91 and did. Anyone remember the myriad articles after these games about Liverpool being robbed? No, me neither.Part Two - Southampton at home - xG 4.12 to 0.36 - 1.44 to 0.25 first half, second half, just over 1 without the penalties. Tiredness, complacency?First half - rhythm broken by the head injury after 12 minutesDarwin red card - huh? ‘Nunez endeavoring to answer the age-old question: “what would it look like if you gave Divock Origi a little bit of meth before each game?”'Their goal……..Second half - upped the levels but should we have done more to get the third earlier?Half time changes - Robbo, Alexis Mac Allister and HarveyOverall TAA and Virg looked very solid.Mo Salah moves up in the lists -Joint 5th PL list - 184, level with Aguero and 3 behind Andy Cole.3rd alone in the all time LFC list with 243 - 42 behind Sir Roger HuntArsenal drawing at Old Trafford makes the result look perfectLFC Women also knocked Arsenal out of the FA CupArteta walked out on his SkySports interview - don't blame him.Part Three - looking ahead to a big weekPSG second leg at Anfield - team, expectations, hopes and scoresDarwin to press Marquinos?Often we talked in the Klopp years about the importance of having a lived experience - how much will that help here?Newcastle United at Wembley - they are without Gordon, Hall and Botman. Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your late night delivery following the action - following the first legs of the Round of 16, where we saw a lot of favourites come out on top, but perhaps not in the way we expected! Wednesday night saw Bayern's 3-0 demolition of Leverkusen - did Xabi Alonso overthink this one? - as well as Liverpool dropping an all-timer of a smash and grab job against PSG, where Alisson Becker gave a masterclass in the Redmen net. Barcelona also showed their versatility by beating Benfica with 10 men, whilst Inter were incredibly mature (and kept ANOTHER clean sheet) in a fairly routine 2-0 win over Feyenoord at De Kuip. In Part Two we move onto Tuesday's action, starting with a topsy-turvy Madrid derby that saw three wondergoals - and Real Madrid taking a narrow 2-1 advantage over city rivals Atletico Madrid - thanks to some magical footwork from Brahim Diaz. We also chat through Arsenal's demolition of PSG where the Gunners reloaded the ammunition tank to score seven after back-to-back blanks; Aston Villa's 3-1 win over Club Brugge where they were perhaps a little fortunate the scoreline looks so pleasant; and Dortmund dropping off to allow Lille to fight back for a 1-1 draw at the Westfalenstadion. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your late night delivery following the action - following the second legs of the new 'Playoff Round' in the competition, pitting the teams who finished 9th to 24th in the league stage against each other to earn places in the Round of 16.Wednesday night saw the headline tie of the round - Real Madrid vs Manchester City - settled by a Kylian Mbappe masterclass, with the Frenchman scoring a brilliant hat-trick to put the game far beyond the reach of Pep Guardiola's men and eliminate a Pep side before the Round of 16 for the first time in his managerial career. We talk how far off it City were, and how with the No 9 firing, Real Madrid might well just be favourites once again. There's also a discussion of the most entertaining game of the evening - PSV's extra-time triumph over Juventus which made the Old Lady the third (of three) Italian sides knocked out in this playoff round - two to Dutch opponents, and the other from Belgium - it's a good time to be from the Low Countries! And we talk briefly about PSG's absolute demolition job of Stade Brestois, and Borussia Dortmund's very uneventful seeing off of Sporting CP. Then in Part Two we chat through Bayern's late Davies dagger that broke Celtic hearts (it's a cruel game, sometimes), as well as Milan and Atalanta's respective headlosses as they crashed out to Feyenoord and Club Brugge respectively, as well as an incredibly fun encounter which saw Benfica emerge victorious against AS Monaco. We discuss another City collapse late in a game, that tifo about the Ballon d'Or and Vinicius Jr's on-pitch response, the defensive frailties in both sides - but that were handled far better by Los Blancos, and all the rest. We also take a look at PSG's win over Brest and if the Parisiens are back in the conversation to win this thing; Juventus fighting off PSV in what should have been the USMNT-off; and why Borussia Dortmund are just much better in Europe than they are in the Bundesliga, as they hammered Sporting in Lisbon. Then in Part Two, we start with Bayern's trip to Celtic Park, where they won 2-1, but where their opposition caused serious problems for Vincent Kompany's side nonetheless; before moving on to look at managerless Feyenoord's victory against AC Milan; Atalanta falling to Club Brugge in controversial circumstances; and another win for Benfica against Monaco in the Principality. SO much going on across the top 5 leagues. Spain is historically close with La Liga and the big dawgs still in the Copa Del Rey. We had some FA Cup Magic with Liverpool being upset by the worst team in the 2nd division. Dembele might be reaching his peak potential with his hot start and injury free beginning to 2025. OH and the Champions League Round of 16 Playoff begins this week. I hope you guys enjoy!
On today's episode, Ted and Patrick breakdown every match in the Knockout phase of the Champions League. They start with the biggest match of the round, Real Madrid vs. Manchester City. Both teams have clear weaknesses, but who will be able to take advantage of them the most? Then they get into Ousmane Dembele, is he the best player in the world right now? Stay tuned to see the hosts live reaction to Feyenoord sacking Brian Priske, underrated matches to watch this round, and some stories from Ted. Julien Laurens, Pol Ballús, Seb Stafford-Bloor and James Horncastle join Jimbo for a deep-dive into all the latest Continental action and transfer news as the window officially *slammed* shut. Over in Italy, the spoils were shared in the Derby della Madonnina after Stefan De Vrij bagged a 93rd minute equaliser, while league leaders Napoli conceded a last-gasp goal of their own to draw 1-1 in Rome. Plus - it's farewell, not goodbye to James as he embarks on an important project… In Ligue 1, Ousmane Dembele just can't stop scoring! He became the first PSG player ever to score hat-tricks in back-to-back games as they came from behind to beat Brest 5-2. So, what's suddenly clicked for him in Paris? There was yet another twist in the title race over in Spain as Real Madrid succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at Espanyol despite having 76% possession. Atleti took full advantage to close the gap at the top to just a point after their 2-0 win over Mallorca, while Barcelona also won thanks to Robert Lewandowski's 30th goal of the season. And in the Bundesliga Harry Kane continues to do Harry Kane things, bagging a brace in his 50th appearance in the league as Bayern survived a late scare to beat Holstein Keil 4-3. They did it without Mathys Tel who's now on loan with Tottenham - but what kind of player are Spurs getting? Produced by Lucy Oliva. Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your late night delivery following the action - after the first ever 'final matchday' of the new League Stage, which saw every single game taking place at the same time. We start with a look at Manchester City's Great Escape - coming back from 1-0 down (and surefire elimination) to win 3-1 against Club Brugge, and sneak into the Playoff round in incredibly dramatic fashion at the Etihad. Then we work our way through all the other games, including an end-to-end encounter as Aston Villa beat Celtic 4-2, PSG's blistering 4-1 demolition of Stuttgart, and a 2-2 thriller between Barcelona and Atalanta that might well have been the game of the night. In Part Two, there's a roundup of all the rest of the action - Ethan Nwaneri's Saka impression as Arsenal saw off Girona, PSV stunning a heavily-rotated Liverpool in Eindhoven, routine wins for Bayern and Real Madrid, Dinamo Zagreb's brave win over 10-man Milan that wasn't quite enough, and Sporting's squeaky point that saw them progress, as well as big wins for Inter, Benfica, Leverkusen, Lille, and Atletico. It's time for The Truth! In a move that has somewhat stunned the football world, Napoli's Georgian sensation Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has told manager Antonio Conte he wants to leave the Neapolitan club, and is on the brink of a €70m move to PSG, despite the fact that his current side are top of Serie A and challenging for a second title in three seasons. So why is this happening, and why is it happening now? We dive deeper into Kvara's story at Napoli - including his adoption as an honorary Neapolitan, and the breathtaking ability that he displayed as he and Victor Osimhen led Gli Azzurri to the 2022/23 league title; as well as his new role under Antonio Conte and some explanations as to why we haven't quite seen the best of the man they call 'Kvaradona' this season. There's also a discussion of some off-the-field matters, which include a big portion about the contract that Kvaratskhelia is on in Naples, and questions about why that deal wasn't renewed after he proved his worth almost as soon as hitting the ground; and the treatment and subsequent departure of his old co-pilot Osimhen, which was a messy affair all summer long. And, from the PSG side, we look at how this might affect Bradley Barcola, who had such a brilliant first half of this season domestically, and where Kvara fits into a Luis Enrique system. So is this move about money, morals, mobility or playing under a coach that best suits the Georgian's style and ability? The Truth is somewhere in the middle...
