See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Adam and Scott get together to chat about the latest news in the Arsenal world. That of course, means we get to chat about the injury to Gabriel Magalhães.* How does the club cope with him out?* Is it Kiwor next man up or something more exotic?* How much blame does the club have for this and the other hamstring injuries?Hamstring Injuries in context:Arsenal are a bit above average (3.8 and 3.5 median) this season with there 5 total injuries. 3 of Arsenal's have been to the level that they decided to go to surgery but it is one of those where we can't really say with confidence that these were grade 2 or 3 injuries here. Then, there is the other big news with fresh links to Viktor Gyökeres. This has been a more divisive link than many I remember in recent times and that means it makes for excellent fodder for conversation. He has been a topic of our writing previously, which is linked here:The big topics here are about the relative quality of the Portuguese League and how that translates for a player like Gyökeres, because there is no doubt that what he has done there is mighty impressive. The major part here is that the difference between the top teams in Portugal and England is noticeable but it really drops off after you get past the top 4 teams. Elo ratings aren't perfect here (they are also backed up by the Opta team ratings) but it is one of those things where the level is much closer to the Championship than the Premier League. This is backed up by the wages that these teams have as well. Sporting laps the League with what they can pay and then it drops quickly. These are sums that are less than most teams in the Championship.Viktor Gyökeres goals against the top Portuguese teams (in the league): Benfica - 270 minutes, 1 goal Porto - 247 minutes, 4 goals (1 penalty)Braga - 263 minutes, 1 goal 0.58 Non-penalty goals over 8.7 90s played. This dosen't mean that players can't translate from Portugal to the Premier League; I think it just means that it is important to have more skepticism about what the numbers mean and to have larger error bars with an expectation is adjusted down. Here is how the adjusted numbers look compared to Havertz:Thank you for listening! This is a public episode. In today's video, we're diving into the latest transfer updates for Nottingham Forest, with breaking news that's got every Reds fan talking. Forest are showing serious interest in Liverpool and Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez! The international break has seen Forest linked with several forwards, and Nunez is the newest name on the list. Since his £70m+ move from Benfica to Liverpool, his form has been inconsistent at best, leading to speculation that the Reds might be open to letting him go this summer. But with a potentially hefty price tag still attached to the 25-year-old, we're asking the big question: should Forest really splash a large chunk of their budget on Nunez? Alongside this blockbuster rumour, we've got updates on a Belgian winger from AC Milan who's also been linked with a move to the City Ground, plus the latest on the contract situations of Neco Williams and Ola Aina. Podcast Intro: The Portugal Corner - Episode 177 - The Usual SuspectsWelcome to The Portugal Corner! The podcast where we dive into all things Portuguese soccer—the good, the bad, and the funny! It's St. Patrick's Day, and we're celebrating with some GuinnessIn a move that caught many by surprise, Chelsea has swooped in to secure two of Portugal's brightest young stars—Quenda and Dario Essugo. The Blues locked in deals worth €50M and €20M, respectively, on delayed loans. With Chelsea's track record of acquiring young talent, we discuss what the future holds for these rising midfielders and whether this move will help or hinder their development.Portugal's squad for the Nations League playoffs is out, and we analyze Roberto Martínez's selections. Is the midfield trio of Vitinha, João Neves, and Bruno Fernandes the right call? Will these choices propel the team to victory, or do we see cracks in the foundation?Sporting CP continues their dominant form, storming past Famalicão with a convincing 3-1 victory. The match saw Fresneda break the deadlock after a stunning run from "Thicc Vic". Famalicão kept things competitive by equalizing through a penalty just before halftime, but Sporting had the last laugh. "Thicc Vic" himself converts from the spot.Returning to domestic action, Benfica faced Rio Ave and started strong with a stunning strike from Orkun Kökçü. However, despite going 2-0 up, two sloppy defensive mistakes—one notably from Tino—allowed Rio Ave back into the match. Fortunately, Aturkoglu stepped up to restore order, securing the much-needed three points.Desperate for stability, Porto reverted to a back-four system, and it paid off with a solid 2-0 victory over AVS. Rising star Rodrigo Mora opened the scoring, bringing energy back into the squad. Fábio Vieira followed up with a thunderous one-timer to double the lead. AVS didn't help their case as Ignacio Rodriguez saw red early in the second half, giving Porto the advantage for the final 45 minutes.Guimarães' European campaign ended in disappointment as Real Betis walked into Portugal and delivered a crushing 4-0 defeat. Even Antony found himself on the scoresheet. However, the team bounced back on the weekend with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Estrela Amadora, with Thomas Handel and Arcanjo providing the goals.Bruno Fernandes continues to prove his worth, delivering a hat-trick (including two penalties) and an assist as Manchester United crushed Real Sociedad 4-1 in the Europa League. He followed it up with a goal against Leicester in a 3-0 weekend win, assisted by Dalot.Jota Silva, shinea for Nottingham Forest, scoring in a vital 4-2 victory over Ipswich. Nuno Espírito Santo's Nottingham Forest locks in third place with this crucial win.PSG survived a Champions League scare, advancing past Liverpool on penalties. Vitinha and Ramos kept their cool from the spot, while Darwin Núñez's miss proved costly. On the domestic front, Nuno Mendes scored his first Ligue 1 goal of the season in Le Classique, helping PSG secure a 3-1 win over Marseille and extend their lead at the top to a staggering 19 points. We took some heat for not nominating Mendes for last week's João Wonder—our bad!Another game, another goal for CR7. Ronaldo netted his 928th career goal as Al-Nassr defeated Al-Kholood .Toronto FC's home opener didn't go as planned, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Chicago Fire. Stonk of the Week: A jaw-dropping goal from a Phoenix Rising player in the USL.João Wonder (Best Portuguese Player of the Week): Bruno Fernandes for his four-goal week, further cementing his place as one of Portugal's top midfielders. Thanks for tuning in! Hello Rank Squad! In a bit of a break from tradition, and after witnessing an absorbing encounter between Liverpool and PSG at Anfield, we decided this week might be a good one to switch things up and discuss the thing everyone will be discussing come Wednesday morning - the action from the Champions League, so this is the first of two UCL Takeaway episodes that will be with you this week. We start on Merseyside, where football reminded us it's a funny old game. Liverpool were outmatched in Paris last Wednesday, but came away with a 1-0 win against PSG; but on a night where they gave a far better account of themselves at home, they ended up losing the game 1-0 and being knocked out on penalties. Work that one out. We give PSG their due for a mighty performance over two legs, and discuss just how far this very talented side could go in this competition, as well as looking at what Liverpool might have done differently, and where the squad might need to be strengthened to push forwards again next season. Then in Part Two, we move over to the rest of the action, dissecting Barcelona's 3-1 win over Benfica where Lamine Yamal and Raphinha set some more records, as well as Pedri's astounding performance in the heart of midfield. We touch on Bayern, who Dean correctly backed in our power ranking episode, and how Leverkusen melted in the heat of the knockout stages; and finish with Inter, who made light work of Feyenoord even with a heavily rotated squad, and who are ticking along nicely in this competition. It's Ranks!  And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

Morning Espresso, 3.12: PSG flying under Luis Enrique, sad night for MLS in Mexico (again)

What a match yesterday between Liverpool and PSG, Luis Enrique's side advanced after penalties. The job he's done to rebuild the team from a superstar-heavy lineup to a group where the team is the star is incredible. They outran Liverpool over the 120 minutes, very few teams have been able to say that over the last decade, and the idea that PSG would do it a few years ago would have been unthinkable. Lamine Yamal is ridiculous, what he's doing at his age is borderline unprecedented, and his work in the first half sent Barcelona through past Benfica. The thing is, as good as he's been this year, Raphinha might be even better with 11 goals and 5 assists in the Champions League to go along with his 27 goals and 19 assists in all competitions. Inter and Bayern handled their business without any surprises, and Arsenal will join them today in the quarterfinals. Aston Villa will setup a matchup with PSG if they hold off Club Brugge, Villa will be at home with a 2 goal lead. Lille and Dortmund are 1-1 going into the second leg in France, I'm expecting Lille to continue surprising folks. Game of the day is definitely the Madrid Derbi as Atleti hosts Real Madrid, trailing 2-1. The hosts haven't lost a home knockout round matchup in the Champions League in 28 years and Kylian Mbappe is battling a muscle injury, although he's expected to start. Can Diego Simeone's side get past their cross-town rivals?Seattle and Cincinnati failed in their bids to advance in Concacaf Champions Cup to Cruz Azul and Tigres respectively. Cincinnati took the lead before conceding three times in an eight minute span in the second half. Columbus made LAFC sweat in their second leg, cutting the 3-0 deficit from the first game in LA to 3-2 at halftime, but Hugo Lloris was outstanding for the Black & Gold in the second half and they got a goal with the second-to-last touch of the game to advance 4-2 on aggregate. Vancouver needs a multiple-goal draw or a win over Monterrey tonight at Santos Laguna's stadium to advance, while the LA Galaxy host Herediano but trail 1-0 coming into the second leg. More topics in the Espresso include Manchester United, Alianza Lima, Foster Gillett, Manchester City women, and the USMNT. Jimbo's joined by Julien Laurens, Pol Ballús and Seb Stafford-Bloor for a deep-dive into domestic and European matters across the continent.  Last week's Champions League first legs left some results more conclusive than others… we're looking at you, PSV 1-7 Arsenal! But there's still plenty of intrigue with the ties between Liverpool and PSG, Real and Atleti and Barca and Benfica finely poised.  In La Liga, Real warmed up for their trip across the capital with a 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano, while Atleti were on the wrong end of that scoreline in a dramatic late defeat at Girona. Meanwhile Barcelona's game with Osasuna was postponed just 20 minutes before kick-off following the sudden death of first team doctor Carles Miñarro Garcia. In Ligue 1, PSG's B-team made light work of Rennes to move 16 points clear at the top of the table - while Paulo Fonseca began his nine month (!) touchline ban as he watched his side beat Nice 2-0 from the stands to put themselves right in the mix for European football next season.  Max Callegari - host of Pressing on Canale 5 - joins us to run the rule over all the Serie A action, which included humiliation for Juve, a first win in six for Napoli and spookily similar comebacks for Milan and Inter.  And in the Bundesliga, there was history as for the first time in nearly 20 years Bayern, Leverkusen and Dortmund all lost on the same matchday. Produced by Lucy Oliva.  RUNNING ORDER:  • PART 1: Moments of the weekend and Champions League teases (00.40) • PART 2: La Liga review - Mixed fortunes for Madrid sides as tragedy hits Barca (09.40) • PART 3: Ligue 1 review - PSG flying high as Fonseca begins his touchline ban (19.35) • PART 4: Serie A review - Juve out of the title race as Milan sides stage 3-2 comebacks (33.30) • PART 5: Bundesliga review - big boys all beaten as Bayer, Bayern and Dortmund lose (45.30) Learn more about your ad choices. Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your late night delivery following the action - following the first legs of the Round of 16, where we saw a lot of favourites come out on top, but perhaps not in the way we expected! Wednesday night saw Bayern's 3-0 demolition of Leverkusen - did Xabi Alonso overthink this one? - as well as Liverpool dropping an all-timer of a smash and grab job against PSG, where Alisson Becker gave a masterclass in the Redmen net. Barcelona also showed their versatility by beating Benfica with 10 men, whilst Inter were incredibly mature (and kept ANOTHER clean sheet) in a fairly routine 2-0 win over Feyenoord at De Kuip. In Part Two we move onto Tuesday's action, starting with a topsy-turvy Madrid derby that saw three wondergoals - and Real Madrid taking a narrow 2-1 advantage over city rivals Atletico Madrid - thanks to some magical footwork from Brahim Diaz. We also chat through Arsenal's demolition of PSG where the Gunners reloaded the ammunition tank to score seven after back-to-back blanks; Aston Villa's 3-1 win over Club Brugge where they were perhaps a little fortunate the scoreline looks so pleasant; and Dortmund dropping off to allow Lille to fight back for a 1-1 draw at the Westfalenstadion. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
