This podcast interview focuses on the entrepreneurial journey to make social a positive place again - for everyone. My guest is Matthew McGrory, CEO of Arwen AI. Matthew is a tech- entrepreneur on a big mission. He has held tech leadership roles: IT Director at Logicalis, Director Managed Services at Acora, and Managing Director at Carrenza (a cloud service provider acquired by Six Degrees Group), In the period from July 2018 and September 2020 he took a break from his corporate life to become a House Husband. In that period he developed a passion for using AI to drive positive change. That led him to cofound Arwen AI in September 2020. Arwen AI is a platform that helps its customers actively moderate and manage their community, across both paid and organic. Their mission: to make social media a more positive place by filtering out hate speech and toxicity. And this inspired me, and hence I invited Matthew to my podcast. We explore what's broken in today's Social Media world. Matthew shares his vision to make Social a place without toxicity and spam. He then elaborates on his hard-won lessons from his journey to speed up direct sales and benefit from using ecosystems to grow even faster. Last but not least, he shares his framework to increase resilience across the organization. Here's one of his quotes I thought, 'This is great, we'll create some technology, fix the problem and everyone will buy it.' I was so wrong on that part. I got to about demo number 200, it was with a US broadcast news organization. And the head of digital said, 'Listen, I'm protected by the First Amendment, I can let anything go up on my channels. I don't have to get rid of it. You're giving me an extra job to do. An extra cost. Tell me why this is valuable to my business. Tell me how it makes me money or saves me money.' During this interview, you will learn four things: How he gained traction in a market where customers resisted to buy because they saw the solution as an extra job and an extra cost. What he did differently to gain technical and commercial momentum. What he invested in early on to get access to strategic accounts and speed up the commercial contracting process in enterprise sales situations. How he goes about to keep the business humming, and keeping everyone aligned and motivated - especially in tough times. An orthopaedic surgeon in Georgia is now the author of a new book, opening up about his family's struggles with drug addiction in a new fiction novel based on their journey, called "The Gardens of Winter." He and his son, the former addict, both opened up to me for this episode of the Run The Race podcast, which you should subscribe to. (4:57) Dr. Jay McGrory, who works at Hughston Clinic in Columbus GA, starts with his difficulty processing his oldest son Nick's substance abuse becoming a "wrecking ball" for their family, almost dying from an overdose, then being in and out of rehab. With Father's Day coming up, (13:07) we talk about his reaction as dad, which he is not afraid to say was being frustrated, angry, disappointed with his son at the time. As a physician, he didn't know the nature of addiction either. Instead of it simply being a bad lifestyle choice, it's also a disease and he learned more and more, going through it as a parent. What was the turning point? He tells that story that included tears and now a dad that's proud of Nick. There's also the spiritual aspect for addicts and their family members for overcoming these challenges, getting help from God and groups going through the same thing, like Al-Anon where they start with the serenity prayer. (24:32) Why did he decide to write a semiautobiographical novel? And how does Dr. McGrory hope it will help other struggling families, addicts? He says there is hope for you! Those involved have to choose to go get help, just like going to the doctor when you're hurt or sick. we also talk briefly about doctors prescribing so many opioids for pain. (34:05) My second guest in this podcast episode is his son Nick McGrory, who started his drug abuse after having shoulder surgery as a teenager and getting opioids for it. More than 6 years ago, at age 22, he got sober and he now leads Otter House Recovery in Asheville NC where he's helping other young men with sober living: https://otterhouserecovery.com/. He takes us through the tough journey leading up to his sobriety (42:21) and we dig deeper into how addictions can start for young people, a disease that impacts the whole family. (50:34) And finally, Nick and i talk about his dad's book, breaking the stigma of addiction which continues killing so many people! That drug abuse also includes struggles with Higher powers and getting help from people outside your family. (1:04:57) I close the pod in prayer. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast! There was no one within my family, at work, at church or within my friend group who understood or could relate to what I was going through."SFN Mentor Fathers share their experiences with younger dads closer to the beginning of their journey raising a child with the same or similar special needs. The SFN Mentor Fathers do NOT offer legal or medical advice, that is what lawyers and doctors do. They simply share their experiences and how they have made the most of challenging situations. Full show notes on chrismcgrory.net If this is your first time to the podcast, welcome. My name is Chris McGrory and I'm currently a senior on the baseball team at Harvard studying psychology and economics. Usually, I'm talking with the amazing people around me and trying to learn what makes them tick so you and I can apply their lessons in our own lives. Today is a little different. Today I'm tackling a question I sometimes pose to my guests for myself: What's a new belief, habit, or routine that has most positively impacted your life? I think I've learned a little bit about being productive over the past almost 4 years as a student-athlete at Harvard and I want to share what productivity routines are currently working for me. Number 1: Airplane Mode and Downloaded Spotify Playlists. Number 2: Three Level Goal Setting. I hope something resonates with you in this short experimental episode of the podcast. Please enjoy.
