Mark Booker | Leviticus 23:1-44 | God With Us: Be Holy | God takes charge of Israel's calendar, giving them a weekly and annual rhythm that reinforces and renews their covenant relationship with him. This sermon explores that rhythm and considers how it works and what we can learn from it, in how we approach time, as the people of God today.
Revelation 12:6) true church and (Revelation 17:3) the false church/whore; notice that both churches came out of the wilderness. Let's say maybe sisters? one decided to follow God and one decide to follow Satan, nevertheless: The physical Church that God transplanted/birth here via the pilgrims had children: And spiritually some went after the old false church teachings of Sunday worship, brought from Rome; and some adhered to the true church teachings of the Bible about Sabbath worship. (Exodus 20:8) read it! You see when Satan get the nations aligned; spiritually known as the beast, then he can enforce his seal/mark upon people, it is not a mistake that we love our credit cards; it's Satan ordained, but God admonishes us to owe no man nothing but to love him; (Romans 13:8-10) read it. Trust me credit will be a snare to God's people. But in our enemy's world, Satan wants us to totally be buried in debt/credit so we have to totally depend on the state or powers that be, in which he controls via his beast. He's always been a deceiver; when all these wonderful people accept him he will mark them. And in reality they're going against the will of the very God Jesus Christ they claim they serve: but being deceived not able to discern truth, the veil of delusions have kept them from understanding or accepting this truth. If it was possible he would deceive the very elect. (Matthew 24:24) read it. But my friends the Sabbath truth is more significance than just to rest after 6 days of physical labors but it's sanctified/Holy Time, we spend with God; he wants us to remember Him. It's relationship folks that God wants, He also desire to point us towards that eternal rest with Him in Heaven. So we have before us the Sabbath the Seal of God or Sunday the Seal of Satan which will we choose? Q&A from the June 27 sermon, "Holy Time" with Matt Cabot and Steven Chitty
The fourteenth sermon in a fifteen part series called “Leviticus”.
And the Lord said to Moses, 13 “You are to speak to the people of Israel and say, ‘Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you. 14 You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. Whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 15 Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death. 16 Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their generations, as a covenant forever. 17 It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.'”18 And he gave to Moses, when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God.1. Where do you presently feel the weight of independence? How is independence alluring to you?2. Where is is easy for you to see your own dependence?3. What are some restful habits that have helped you 'sabbath' well?4. When have you seen 'God at work while you're at rest?'5. Where do you feel like you're failing right now? Where do you feel like you've got ground to make up? How would it look for you to receive Jesus invitation to rest in THAT place?
For many confessional Protestants, this week is the big one, the Holy One. Which leads to questions about ways Presbyterians, Anglicans, and Lutherans mark time. Which days are holy, which seasons does the church follow, and to what degree does a liturgical calendar divide or separate Protestants who trace their roots to the sixteenth century? Without surprise, Lutherans and Anglicans follow the church calendar more than Presbyterians and may vary in their reasons for observance. But Reformed Protestants designate some days as holy and may even elevate the week as a way of marking time over the rotation of the earth around the sun. All this and maybe a little more on the latest recording of paleo-Protestants talking.
In Deuteronomy 16:1-17 Moses gives instructions about the three annual feasts in Israel's calendar: the Feast of Unleavened Bread (associated with the Passover), the Feast of Weeks (Pentecost), and the Feast of Tabernacles/Booths. All three of these feasts show that worship is communion with God, that it is based on past redemption, and that it rejoices in the blessings of salvation while looking forward to the consummation of all things in the New Heavens and New Earth. All of this informs our Lord's Day worship.

This section talks a lot about the rulers and decision makers in Israel's society: judges, kings, and prophets. But there are so many ways that Israel's authority figures were to be different from the nation's. They were arbiter's between God's law and man. David and Seth dive deep into these different societal and governmental roles and also relish in the ways that Jesus is the final and perfect judge, king, and prophet. For more information about Spoken Gospel visit: http://www.spokengospel.com Welcome to Spoken Gospel. This is our journey to speak the gospel out of every corner of scripture. Each week author and poet David Bowden sits down with preacher and blogger Seth Stewart to address one pericope of scripture and show how it points to Jesus. We believe that the whole Bible is about Jesus. In fact, everything is about Jesus. “From him, through him, and to him are all things” (Rom. 11:36). “For by him all things were created…all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Col. 1:16-17). Since everything in the world is about Jesus, certainly the Bible, which is his word, is about him too. “And Jesus said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?’ And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself” (Lk. 24:25-27) “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me” (Jn. 5:39) In fact, we are convinced that reading the Bible without seeing how it points us to Jesus is to read the Bible with a veil over it. “For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed” (2 Cor. 3:14-16). This text goes on to say that it is the Gospel that is veiled. But when the veil is taken away by the Spirit, and we see the Gospel throughout the Bible, we don’t just get new information or discover clever connections. We actually see, “the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Cor. 4:4). Seeing Jesus and his Gospel throughout the whole Bible is not about trying to see something that isn’t really there, but trusting the Spirit of God to show us what is really there. And what is really there is the image and glory of God in Jesus. This isn’t about seeing beyond the text or through the text. It isn’t about overlooking the historical events or the author’s intent, to see something mystical and secret. It is about seeing how God operated in historical events, through authorial intent, in the texts of scripture to show us more of his glory in Jesus. That is our goal in this podcast. We will work through books of the Bible in segments. Usually these segments will be broken up by the text itself, pausing for reflection where the literature seems to tell us to stop and take account. Our hope is to make it through the whole Bible, speaking the Gospel out of every corner of Scripture. Welcome to our public experiment to test this thesis. Welcome to Spoken Gospel.
Every seven years, God commanded a year of rest for the people and their land. This was called the Sabbatical Year. In this year, debts were forgiven, slaves were released, and property was returned. A look at the significance of God's institution of the Sabbath and holy time.
In this episode, David and Seth talk about tithing, kosher laws, and the death penalty. That's because this section of Deuteronomy goes into several laws which cultivate Israel's distinctiveness among the nations. Things like where they can worship, what they can worship, where they can make sacrifices, and what foods they can eat all contribute to their uniqueness. Here we go!
Why did God choose Israel out of every other nation? What does it mean that Israel is God's treasured possession? Why did Jesus quote, "Man does not live on bread alone" to Satan in his temptation? In this passage, Moses recites the Ten Commandments for the second time. Is this just repetition, or is something deeper happening here? Why does God give us commands? How can we keep God's commands? What does it mean to write God's commands on our hearts? What is the connection between our righteousness and obeying the Law? When we think about the law, we think of it as "what's" and "how's." But we often don't think about the "why's." In Deuteronomy 4, Moses gives a preamble to the Ten Commandments that helps us see why God wanted his people to obey. David and Seth dive deep into topics like the fear of God, evangelism and obedience, and why relationship is such a huge part of law code. What is the setting, purpose, and shape of Deuteronomy? Is it just a “second law” as its name suggests, or is something bigger going on? David and Seth spend this episode introducing the book of Deuteronomy as a whole, using the first three chapters as a rubric and guide for the discussion. In this final episode on the book of Numbers, David and Seth look at the some of the final instructions, laws, and issues addressed to the people of Israel before they entered the Promised Land. What are cities of refuge and who is the avenger of blood? What is the significance of the land of Canaan and why did Israel have to drive the people out? And, as always, how does this final story in Numbers tell us more about Jesus and his Gospel? For more information about Spoken Gospel visit: http://www.spokengospel.com Welcome to Spoken Gospel. What are we to make of this long section of feasts, festivals, sacrifices, and vows? Why did God want Israel to orient themselves around a calendar of feasts and sacrifices? Why did women need their husband's approval in order to make a vow? David and Seth discuss all of these and how they point us to Jesus.
