Zemirah interviews Josh about his new book, Sacred Time.
What captivates your attention daily? While most of us readily admit that our spiritual life deserves priority, our actual time allocation often tells a different story. This thought-provoking episode challenges us to examine the disparity between what we claim to value and where we invest our hours.Jesse Cope delivers a powerful wake-up call about our digital distractions, asking pointed questions about how much time we dedicate to streaming services, social media scrolling, mobile games, and sports compared to prayer and scripture reading. The message hits home: our calendar and screen time reveal our true priorities far more accurately than our intentions.Drawing from Matthew 16, we explore Jesus's paradoxical teaching that "whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." This foundation helps us understand authentic discipleship as a path requiring genuine sacrifice—something increasingly countercultural in our comfort-oriented society. The episode gains remarkable perspective through stories of Medal of Honor recipients from the Civil War through Vietnam, whose extraordinary sacrifices highlight how misaligned our modern priorities often become. These accounts seamlessly connect to historical accounts of early Christian martyrs who faced death for their faith, reminding us that Christians continue to face persecution globally today.Rather than offering simple solutions, this episode confronts us with what Jesus called the question of a lifetime: "Who do you say that I am?" Your answer fundamentally shapes everything else—including how you'll spend the next 24 hours. Join us for this challenging examination of what truly deserves your precious time and attention.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe

Your life is the fleeting moments between your birth and death. During this time, true fulfillment does not come from external achievements but from an internal state of unconditional joy and love. Because we condition our happiness on outside circumstances, it often leads to suffering, attachment, and endless striving for some satisfaction. By letting go of stored past disturbances that have blocked your natural well-being, you can unlock a state of unconditional happiness and appreciate each moment as it unfolds. Stephanie Rousselle welcomes Jenn Tucker to discuss overcoming the shame of mental health struggles, and the transformative power of Christian meditation. This practice is not merely about acquiring biblical knowledge, but about deeply embodying the teachings of Scripture. This spiritual discipline invites the presence of God into daily life through Christ, towards personal transformation and the renewing of our minds in Christ. When Jenn's youngest daughter began experiencing panic and anxiety, Jenn and her family plunged themselves deep into the world of therapy and psychiatry, witnessing firsthand the treatments, tools, and medications for panic attacks, anxiety disorders, depression, and other mental health conditions. As Jenn witnessed her daughter's suffering and learned to honestly address her own mental health struggles, she became passionate about the importance of mental health, particularly within faith communities. Once a source of shame and fear, Jenn is now an advocate for making mental health a priority. Jenn and her family have opened up about their journey with mental health because they love Jesus. They believe God's Word. They trust Him. They believe His plans are good and His purposes are for our ultimate good and His ultimate glory. But they have seen firsthand what it's like to have a serious mental health condition that requires the help of doctors and medications, and they are grateful to have these tools. The brain is a complicated and beautiful mystery in many ways. We have to care to the bodies that God has given us, and Jenn hopes to help others learn tactics to care for their minds and bodies while also growing closer to God. Anxiety — or any mental health condition — isn't a roadblock to faith but rather a way to grow closer to Christ. So, today, Jenn opens up about her past struggles with doubt, mental health, and the pressures of religious perfectionism. Raised in a fundamentalist environment where anxiety was viewed as sinful, she experienced significant personal shame. Her daughter's battle with anxiety and panic attacks allowed Jenn to reassess her beliefs and embrace God's comforting presence. This shift in understanding was a catalyst for change, leading her to realize the true good news of Jesus Christ. Meditation on Scripture is fundamentally different from, and complement to traditional Bible study. While the latter focuses on collecting knowledge, meditation is an intimate practice of spiritual reflection. By meditating on God's word through methods such as Lectio Divina, we can experience peace and resilience in the chaos of the modern world. Jenn speaks candidly about how this practice has helped her through personal struggles, allowing scriptural wisdom to become an integral part of her being. Both Jenn and Stephanie reflect on overcoming personal challenges through faith and recognizing the liberating nature of trust in God. They candidly discuss the guilt that can accompany misapplying biblical verses, and the pressure to perform religious tasks as proof of faith. Jenn encourages a shift from “doing for God” to “being with God,” emphasizing presence and relationship over actions. This change in perspective has allowed her to discern God's constant support through life's hardships and unexpected moments. Jenn shares three powerful methods for engaging with Scripture meditatively. First, she recommends reflecting on standout words or phrases within a passage, using them as focal points for prayer and contemplation. Secondly, praying phrase by phrase while listening for divine guidance can uncover God's individual invitations through scripture. Finally, she encourages considering what God may be inviting each individual to do or understand through their current life circumstances. These practices are designed to develop a deeper connection to God, transforming scripture into a living conversation. Christian meditation offers not just spiritual enrichment, but tangible health benefits, such as reduced stress and improved mental clarity. By focusing directly on Christ and His teachings, meditation integrates the spiritual with the mental, fostering an awareness of God's constant presence and love. Through this practice, Jenn has found tools for coping with life's unpredictabilities. Through her book “Present in Prayer,” Jenn Tucker invites us into the practice of Lectio Divina, a historic form of Christian meditation comprising five steps: Silence, Prayer, Reading, Meditation, and Incarnation. She stresses the importance of silence and prayer in preparing the heart to meet God, guiding readers through various meditation practices designed to enrich their communion with God. This structured approach enables individuals to internalize Scripture more deeply, fostering spiritual growth and resilience. MORE ABOUT PRESENT IN PRAYER Jennifer “Jenn” Tucker knows what anxiety feels like. In her bestselling book, Breath as Prayer: Calm Your Anxiety, Focus Your Mind, and Renew Your Soul, Jenn shared the powerful practice of Christian breath prayer, a simple and approachable tool for battling her depression, stress, and anxiety. Now, in Present in Prayer: A Guided Invitation to Peace Through Biblical Meditation, Jenn explores the redemptive power of the centuries-old practice of Christian meditation. Present in Prayer offers a simple yet profound guide to Christian meditation, a practice with the capacity to rewire the neural pathways in the brain, creating new connections and changing the way we think and how we regulate our emotions for physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, using the ancient monastic framework of lectio divina. Present in Prayer features 30 mediations, each with a gentle call to silence, an opening prayer, and a thoughtful reflection on a Bible verse; guided meditation on Scripture; a prayer of surrender and prompts for how to live out the truths God is speaking; and inspired art. “Christian meditation has been profoundly helpful to me personally,” said Jenn. “Learning to find this quiet time to commune with God has helped grow my faith and strengthened my mental and spiritual health, drawing me nearer to God, helping me change unhelpful and negative thought patterns, and easing the physical and mental symptoms of anxiety and stress.” With Jenn Tucker's Present in Prayer, cultivate a more purposeful and peaceful prayer life and greater intimacy with God as you focus your thoughts on His Word. Jennifer Tucker is bestselling author, artist, graphic designer, wife, mother, grandmother, devoted follower of Jesus, and advocate for mental health. She shares her heart and art online at littlehousestudio.net. Jenn is the author of Breath as Prayer: Calm Your Anxiety, Focus Your Mind, and Renew Your Soul. We want to love God, because He first loved us. We want to experience the fullness of life with Him—and not be content with stale, boring, leftover faith. Jesus tells us that the most important thing is to love the Lord our God, so we take Him seriously. He adds that we are to love our neighbor as ourselves. Now, there are many ways to do that, but I have always personally felt deep compassion for victims of human trafficking – it is modern day slavery, and it revolts the heart of God. And so, they are our particular neighbors here at Gospel Spice. We want to play our part in raising awareness and then financially supporting those who fight this great evil. Now we would love to invite you to join the team in one of three ways: 1, pray Gospel Spice forward – pray for our guests, our listeners and participants, and for us too! 2, play Gospel Spice forward by telling your friends about us, and by please leaving positive reviews and comments on your podcast listening app; and 3rd, PAY GospelSpice forward. This Sunday, in the sermon "Advent = Sacred Time," we'll explore Romans 13:11-14 and consider what it means to live with anticipation and readiness. This special Hanging of the Greens service invites us to decorate with symbols of the season, reminding us of the light and promise of Christ. Join us as we begin this journey together, embracing the sacredness of this holy time.
Before we transition to following the lectionary for several months, we take time to reflect on where and how we locate ourselves spiritually. Our hope is that we become a community where time itself becomes an anchor in the life of Jesus.

The Zionist writer Ahad Ha'am famously remarked that more than the Jewish people kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jewish people. There is a deep truth that is embedded in the organization of time, the ritualization of communal ceremonies of remembrance and praise, and the recapitulation of the traumas and triumphs of the past: that the calendar can function as a source of national solidarity. Living in rhythm with the Jewish calendar and all that entails is what makes Jews, Jews. The calendar is the instrument that the Jewish people developed to teach our children Jewish history and the fundamental principles of Judaism, and it is what sustains and reinforces those principles throughout the span of a person's life. It serves, you might say, as a strategy for national cohesion. Jewish nationhood depends on the organization of Jewish hours, days, weeks, and months. In this episode of the Tikvah Podcast, Mosaic's editor Jonathan Silver speaks with Rabbi Meir Soloveichik, who has just published a new book that interprets each of the Jewish holidays in light of how it contributes to Jewish national belonging. Rabbi Soloveichik leads Congregation Shearith Israel, the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue; is the director of the Straus Center for Torah and Western Thought at Yeshiva University; and is the impresario of the website MeirSoloveichik.com, where you can find all of his writing along with his many video courses and podcasts, including his daily commentary on the Hebrew Bible, Bible365. His new book Sacred Time was published in 2024 by Koren.

In this conversation, Kristi McLelland shares her background growing up in rural Mississippi and her journey of faith. She talks about her passion for teaching the Bible and the importance of experiencing it in community. Kristi also discusses the impact of losing her father and the significance of finding and nurturing a supportive community. She shares the story of how Mandisa, a dear friend, played a pivotal role in getting her Bible study, Jesus and Women, published. Kristi and Shannon discuss the importance of finding sacred rhythms in life, making decisions based on the grace of God, and getting in the flow of the river of God's work. They emphasize the need to pay attention to the seasons and eras of life and to be generous with saying no to opportunities that are not aligned with God's leading. They also talk about the beauty of the kingdom of God and the renewal and beauty that God is constantly bringing. We all celebrate personal milestones like birthdays and wedding anniversaries throughout the year. Many of us are accustomed to measuring time according to the Gregorian Calendar, a man-made system, rather than the Hebrew calendar, which was established by the Creator of time. In this episode, Rabbi Nagel joins us to explore these important questions: 1) Should we acknowledge the Gregorian calendar? 2) How do we serve Hashem during these significant personal milestones in the year? 3) For those who have converted or are married to converts, how do we honor previous birthdays and wedding anniversaries that may seem less relevant post-conversion? Join us for an enlightening discussion on harmonizing these calendars and embracing these sacred times in our lives. ★ Support this podcast ★
LEVITICUS Lesson 33 – Chapter 23 Baruch Levine aptly names Leviticus 23 as “The Calendar of Sacred Time”. So we get a detailed schedule of religious events as ordained by Yehoveh and given to the people of Israel in this chapter. Rabbi Dunner delves into the concept of sacred time in Judaism, drawing from Rabbi Jonathan Sacks' teachings. He explains how Shabbat, likened to a temporal sanctuary, offers a break from daily life, fostering reflection and spiritual renewal. By exploring the duality of time—both cyclical and linear—we discover the importance of balance, illustrating how these sacred moments enhance spiritual growth and communal unity.
As the sports world focuses on this week's basketball Final Fours in Arizona and Cleveland, we connect with a Blue Devil for whom this time of year is sacred. “Anger can be illogical and it can cause a lot of harm. But it also can be righteous and it can be rectifying something that's wrong.”— Ganga DeviWhat is the role of anger in our lives? And what can we learn from our sense of it?This episode of Living Jewishly is an instalment of Scared Time, a podcast devoted to the healing art of the Hebrew calendar. As we bid goodbye to Chanukah, we enter Tevet, the tenth month of the calendar. This is a time of cold and darkness, but one that evokes a fiery emotion. Its 10th day commemorates the onset of the siege of Jerusalem — no wonder that Tevet is associated with the sense of anger. Tevet is also connected to the story of Purim, as it is in the month of Tevet that Esther was taken to the King Achashverosh's palace to be chosen as Queen. Most of us are only aware of anger when we feel it or when others feel it toward us, but in these heightened states we are unable to reflect on and understand the wisdom and potential carried within it.Tevet offers us the rare opportunity to examine anger from a place of peace. Through drawing on Kabbalistic themes and psychological tools, we may work intentionally with anger and see it with new eyes. This episode explores anger's purpose — how it can point us to unmet needs and fuel us to make necessary changes in our lives, relationships, and social systems.“That is what Tevet gives us to work with. It's understanding: what is anger? What does it mean to play with the fire of anger?”— BluthThis episode discusses:How anger can be used as a tool to create positive and necessary changeComparisons between ecological fire and the fire of anger, and how each plays a role in stripping away what no longer servesHow to differentiate between the needs and the strategies connected with our angerHighlights:01:30 Welcome to Tevet02:58 Purim & The Book of Esther03:53 Chanukah & Purim06:39 Tevet & anger08:04 Comparison between anger & fire10:46 Emotions as data points 12:10 Regenerative anger & trauma15:13 Empathic communication & reframing19:58 Our needs v. our strategies24:45 The Language of Emotions26:51 Ganga Devi's story 31:41 The Work That Reconnects33:10 Tools within & without us37:31 Cultivating integrityLinks:Marshall Rosenberghttps://www.nonviolentcommunication.comAlexandra Paretta, Tantra practitionerhttps://www.wovenyin.comKarla McLaren, The Language of Emotionshttps://karlamclaren.com/product/the-language-of-emotions-bookhttps://karlamclaren.com/understanding-and-befriending-angerJoanna Macy, The Work That Reconnectshttps://www.joannamacy.net/mainTo get in contact or learn more about Living Jewishly:Visit our website: https://livingjewishly.orgVisit our learning community: https://www.schooloflivingjewishly.comFollow us on Instagram: @living.jewishlyWatch us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO2YEegjapKpQeXG6zh6tzw Send us an email at hello@livingjewishly.orgShalom!

“Dreaming is a necessary complement to our waking life that allows us to rest and integrate and regenerate.”— Ganga DeviAs home to the holiday of Chanukah, Kislev is a time for celebration, light, and togetherness. But it is also a time for sleeping, for dreaming, and for integrating the teachings of our dreams into our waking lives. The beauty of the cyclical nature of our Hebrew calendar is that it creates space for us to explore its universal and resonant themes each year as different people, bringing with us new experiences and perspectives that shift and re-shape the ways in which we engage and reflect. This episode of the Living Jewishly Podcasts is a replay of the Kislev episode of Sacred Time, a podcast about the healing art of the Hebrew calendar. Looking toward Channukah as a time of light, dedication, and grace within a time of darkness, this conversation deeply examines Kislev's overarching themes of sleep, death, dreams, and light, and moves thoughtfully through the cyclical nature of the rhythms of creation.“There's something about this time of sleep and slumber and darkness — we are actually deeply held.”— BluthThis episode discusses: How dreams inspire, enrich, and borrow from our waking lives — and their connection to prophecyHow our relationship with sleep can inform and soften our relationship to deathThe symbolic meaning behind Channukah falling across both Kislev and Tevet Highlights: 00:52 Intro01:51 Kislev & Samec05:00 The circle of our daily rhythms07:46 Dreams, prophecy & waking life09:58 Death & sleep12:14 Midrash: Adam & the Garden of Eden16:09 Living Jewishly Channukah Guide19:01 Channukah & Kislev22:01 Darkness & light24:03 Ganga Devi's dream work29:29 Mourning rituals & Waking LifeLinks: Living Jewishly Channukah Guidehttps://livingjewishly.org/channukah Waking Life (2001)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waking_Life To get in contact or learn more about Living Jewishly: Visit our website: https://livingjewishly.org Follow us on Instagram: @living.jewishly Watch us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO2YEegjapKpQeXG6zh6tzw or send us an email at hello@livingjewishly.org. “Even when it doesn't feel like there is excitement, there are our rhythms and there are our cycles.”— Bluth After the social and structured rituals of the High Holidays, the month of Cheshvan is a period of personal contemplation during which we turn to the quieter rhythms of our daily commitments. The absence of Holy Days during this month challenges us to source our connection with the sacred from within. In doing so, we are able to look both back and forward to address our priorities — what is meaningful and important at this moment. This instalment of the Living Jewishly Podcasts revisits the Cheshvan episode of Sacred Time, a podcast devoted to the healing art of the Hebrew calendar. Bluth and Ganga Devi discuss the month of Cheshvan, and the many ways that we can develop structures and systems to reconnect us with our true priorities in life.Though it is a more introspective month, it is still one of action. The process of self-inquiry identifies what is precious and tender to us, so we are then able to step fully into those relationships — with the divine, with our loved ones, and with ourselves.“The structures and systems of religions should exist to support each of our own personal and direct relationships with what is sacred.”— Ganga DeviThis episode discusses: Being mindful of how we relate to systems of authority and power outside of ourselves in our relationship with what is sacredThe importance of motivating ourselves to find empowerment in responsibility by creating our own structures in the absence of external onesWhy Cheshvan is the perfect time to focus on restorative and nurturing self-care Highlights: 00:51 Intro01:51 The month of Cheshvan04:42 What is sacred to us?08:03 Self-inquiry & creating our own structures10:38 External structures12:22 The sacred in the mundane13:37 Taking action & finding support16:50 Rhythms & cycles18:20 Modeh Ani & daily commitments25:06 The School of Living JewishlyLinks: Living Jewishly Yoga for Cheshvan with Jenna Zadaka: https://livingjewishly.org/rosh-chodesh-cheshvan-with-guest-yoga-teacher-jenna-zadaka The School of Living Jewishlyhttps://www.schooloflivingjewishly.com To get in contact or learn more about Living Jewishly: Visit our website: https://livingjewishly.org Follow us on Instagram: @living.jewishly Watch us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO2YEegjapKpQeXG6zh6tzw or send us an email at hello@livingjewishly.org. “These holidays are such an opportunity for us to be looking at our lives, to be stepping in fully with humility and with honesty, and with care for each other and for the Earth — to find the capacity to forgive so that we can renew.”— BluthThis episode of Living Jewishly is an instalment of Sacred Time, a podcast devoted to the healing art of the Hebrew calendar. In this episode exploring the significance of the month of Elul, Bluth and Ganga Devi unpack major themes related to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The month of Elul is a time of intimacy, love and relationships. It reminds us that the sacred is in the mundane — we are beloved because we feel G-d every day, in every human and messy moment. Ani L'dodi V'dodi Li is the acronym for Elul and it means “I am for my beloved and my beloved is for me."Elul's reflective energy guides us into the New Year, preparing us for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Rosh Hashanah is our shared story of the birth of the world and humanity, celebrating creation by honouring the Earth and looking forward to our collective future.Yom Kippur tells the story of the sin of the Golden Calf and the second chance given to humanity. This is a day to practice atonement and forgiveness — so we can enter the New Year with integrity.By reflecting on the past year, we hold ourselves responsible and accountable so that we are able to cleanse and renew. In doing so, we return to Elul's beloved meditation on loving and forgiving ourselves as well as others.Listen as Bluth and Ganga Devi discuss the importance and benefits of shadow work, humility, and alignment of values as we introspectively and collectively work toward renewal and integrity during the high holidays.“If we can recognize ‘this is where I've been missing the mark, this is where I've been out of integrity, this is where I've been out of alignment,' [we can] actually recognize what are some of the possible benefits and blessings and lessons.”— Ganga DeviThis episode discusses: Commentary on original sin as a lack of responsibility and accountability — not human natureHow Jungian perspectives on the human shadow relate to human nature — shame, blame, and perfection as the enemy of integrity — and how shadow work can allow us to love ourselves and others, and step into our lives with empowermentThe importance of humility in taking our place within the world, and its relationship to our field of action Highlights: 00:50Introduction 01:17Month of Elul 02:57Preparing for Rosh Hashanah 03:38Rosh Hashanah: Responsibility & accountability 08:40Humility & our field of action 12:50Missing the mark 14:08Yom Kippur: Forgiveness & second chances17:07Jungian perspectives: Human shadow23:20Sukkot: Earthly love and care26:00Elul: Beloved reflection29:04Transformative power of the high holidays30:11Living Jewishly resources31:59Cleansing & renewalLinks: To get in contact or learn more about Living Jewishly: Visit our website: https://livingjewishly.org Follow us on Instagram: @living.jewishly Watch us on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO2YEegjapKpQeXG6zh6tzw or send us an email at hello@livingjewishly.orgShalom!
Amanda's Client, Kristen, joins the show to talk about how her intuition helped change her life. After finding Amanda a few years back through Amy Brown (4 Things with Amy Brown, The Bobby Bones Show), Kristen has learned to tap into her Higher Self and create soulful accountability which has resulted in finding innate confidence & strength through their dedicated sessions together. Deepening her faith through discernment, Kristen went through a divorce and made an additional life change, moving from Florida to Nashville - intuitively knowing this was where she was and is meant to be. Kristen's growth has come from creating sacred time where she is able to resolutely get honest with her Truth and learn to trust her Voice. Shifting from one vibration to another, letting go of old fears and stepping into an element of the unknown, Kristen has utilized her intuition through the grief of her divorce & move, in parenting her daughter Georgia, and through the loss of her parents. Amanda reminds us to not lose hope or faith during difficult times - know that whatever you're walking through has meaning which will be revealed when you seek, look and listen in Divine timing.
