The new podcast series “AYLI Ground Level” shines a light on artists that create the fabric of our community: City by city, state by state, country by country. In a different year, under a different environment, Washington, D.C.'s Baronhawk Poitier would be an “it” name of the summer festival season. His release on Honey Soundsystem would have been played by DJs near and far, bringing a smile to the face of the moodiest raver. For a debut release, his polished sound, infectious vibes and catchy beat is years beyond his relative experience. Despite the uncertainty of what's to come, you can bet that Baronhawk will be a name you'll be hearing about for years to come. Take a moment to listen to his mix, read his interview, pick up his Honey release on Bandcamp, and send him a few bucks or more. This Sunday we're excited to showcase the Washington, D.C community, in collaboration with Fault Radio, for our monthly Coast to Coast broadcast. Quality. The AM, also known as Ann-Marie Teasley is a techno DJ that started out as a classical violinist in Detroit, MI. She discovered the underground rave scene in her hometown in 1996 and her sound is a reflection of the dark hard music she discovered in warehouses and abandoned theatres. Her sets take you on a nostalgic journey through electro straight from the streets of Detroit, to raw and funky peak time techno. The AM made her debut as a guest DJ on NTS radio being featured on Ash_Lauryn's Underground and Black show in 2017 while living in Miami, FL. From there she began playing local parties around Miami Beach. In 2019, she relocated to Detroit, and began playing local clubs like TV Lounge and Grasshopper Underground. Upon her return, she also began to work with Detroit's very own Scan7. After being on the bill at the same events around Detroit, The AM teamed up with Mr. Hooper, the youngest member of Scan7 for hard hitting live DJ sets. After spending time discovering hardware in the studio with Scan7, The AM and Mr. Hooper decided to create an official joint venture called HLX-1. HLX-1 recorded their first two self-released singles “I Can Tell” and “The Cosmos” at Submerge Records in Detroit, MI in August 2020. From there, they continued working and switched from DJ sets, to live techno sets, including all original music created by HLX-1. In December of 2020 the HLX-1 track “I Can Tell” was featured on Beatport's ‘Top 50 tracks of 2020' list. The AM was also featured on Beatport's ‘On our radar' for August 2020 and closed out the year with a set for Paxahau TV streamed from their headquarters in Detroit. To kick off 2021 The AM was featured on Rinse FM, NTS Radio with Moxie, The HNYPOT Podcast hosted by Honey Soundsystem, and Resident Advisor's top DJ's for February, while writing and recording two EP's with Ken Clements for HLX-1 in collaboration with DJ Maaco and Mark Flash. The AM currently curates a monthly live Techno show with Detroit Promo TV in collaboration with Underground and Black ‘The Detroit Edition,' which is focused on showcasing artists and their skills live on the decks. Detroit Promo TV also known as “THE BASSMENT DETROIT” has been preserving the Detroit Underground realness for the past eight years and welcomed The AM as a host after her first guest appesrance. BSS (fka Beesmunt Soundsystem) is Amsterdam born and bred artist, DJ and producer Luigi Vittorio Jansen. Over the last decade plus, formerly as a duo but now a solo concern, BSS established a sound with residencies at key Amsterdam clubs and radio stations plus the Opium Club in Vilnius, and with releases on the likes of Hivern Discs and Honey Soundsystem. The music is always about musical adventure so spans a wide remit from lush downtempo weirdness to tropical electronics via proto house grooves.
The warmth and sensuality of the BSS sounds runs right the way through this week's mix. It slowly builds through ever more expansive synths and long legged drums to wake you from your post weekend slumber. It remains charmingly deep and hypnotic, with sinewy pads, frazzled synths and soft acid motifs all bleeding in and out of the mix to add detail to the trip. It's as mindful as it is subtly physical and leaves you feeling ready for action.

A mixtape nerd since I first got my hands on a tape deck, I usually do a laborious amount of prep before I start making a mix. But, for some reason, I just plugged in and went with my gut on this one - a live session of what turned out to be 37 gems (including a french hardcore breaks tune by Alec Empire and a beautiful oddity to end it all by Dubtractor). I have always hoped I would get to create an entry for The Bunker podcast. It might be the first podcast I ever subscribed to! So, with that in mind I tried to stretch all the colors on my pallete on this mix in some respects to appease to the neo-retropolitan Bunker NY sound." tracklist: 4E - Ask Isadora Cari Lekebusch - Profile B Canvax - Shower Junq - From Below Linoleum Head - No Alghorithms Crash Course In Science - Flying Turns (Cosjmin Edit) H.E.A.D. - Into Your Head Again Al Wootton - United Martsman - Maxicle TWR72 - Koek Richard Holhburn - Gross Gestures Lowfish - Glass & Spiders Morph - X-ex HD Substance - Inside/Stop 96 Back - Ghzel Tea Acid Junkies - Wrathchild Paul du Lac - Cahokia (Paul du Lac Jack Dub) Reel to Reel - Sundog Kenny Larkin - Chasers Black Dog - Yama (Take 1) Susumu Tokata - Tambarin Datacide - Strategies BUTTECHNO - Orient and Sir Lord Commix - Cosmic Jive DJ Misjah & DJ Tim (Original Mix) Dark Force - Struggling Through The Century Zulutronic - By Special Request Alec Empire - Heartbeat That Isn't There Maelstrom - Dialogue Kerosene - Sadomasic Phunkkaleptic Savas Pascalidis - Who Dunnit Nick Wicked - Beekeeper Cooly G - Is It Gone Silicon Scally - Deep Dissolve Simon Shreeve - The Healing Bowl W-Moon - One Earthquake A Day Dubtractor - Spring Reverb

Some of the country's best DJs and promoters were in New York last week for an event put on by Red Bull Music Academy called Trade Show. Representatives from Honey Soundsystem, Honcho, Wrecked, the Carry Nation, The NeedlExchange, and Men's Room all united under one roof. The show was meant to demonstrate the rise of a network of gay parties across the country that prioritize adventurous musical selections running the gamut from disco, to techno, and even more gnarled forms of club music.   We figured it'd be a good time to get all of them in one room for a chat, so this week's episode of the THUMP podcast is an overstuffed two-parter on the state of the gay underground. Features editor Michelle Lhooq leads Aaron Clark (Honcho), Baronhawk Poitier (TNX), and aCe (Men's Room) through a discussion of the intersection of partying, politics and inclusivity on the first part. Then after a break, she returns with Jackie House (Honey Soundsystem), Ryan Smith (Wrecked), and Nita Aviance (The Carry Nation) for a... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Honey Soundsystem is an American creative collective that has become hugely influential in the decade since they formed. As DJs both solo and as a team, the San Fran foursome has more than made its mark with an eclectic sound that draws on the diverse backgrounds of the musicians, performers and designers involved. They also host their own parties—famed for fantastic art installations as well as carefully curated headliners from all across the musical spectrum—and run plenty of labels between them, including HNYTRX and most famously Dark Entries, which has poured many attention on Patrick Cowley with a series of resurrected releases. Very much setting their own agenda, then, the group does just the same with their two hour mix for us. It is a fresh offering that rolls through a bouncing selection of well polished house and techno. Clean and tinged with a stylish sense of retro-futurism throughout, there are nods to darker synth wave sounds and colourful disco vibes that will keep you coming back for more.

One quarter of San Francisco's queer DJ collective and party crew Honey Soundsystem, Jacob Sperber brings the energy this week with his Jackie House alter-ego. Thundering disco rhythms and slamming, retro house jams invoke images of sweat soaked dance floors with writhing bodies. This one takes no prisoners. Look out for Honey Soundsystem's new label featuring tracks from Jackie himself and Honey's other member Bezier; with 4 tracks of italo and space disco bangers. www.soundcloud.com/jackie-house

Title of the mix: P-Play's Scheiße Minelli. Track-listing coming soon. Bio: Co-Founder of Honey Soundsytem and part owner of Discaire Records. "DJ P-Play possesses the sort of mentality that keeps San Francisco's club-and cultural-scene vital. When he saw a nightlife void, instead of bitching about it, he went after filling it. And when one bar told him no, he started up a whole collective of like-minded DJs to do forward-thinking events at other clubs, pulling like-minded music lovers into his hive. Pee Play is a co-founder of Honey Soundsystem, a crew of party pros wanting to instigate an edgy alternative to the Castro scene. They've spread their vinyl across SOMA, the Tenderloin, and the world." - Jennifer Maerz of SF WEEKLY Selected Discography: Street Hero - End of The World (Honey Soundsystem Remix) [HNYTRX] Alexis - Lonely Sea (Honey Soundsystem Remix) [HNYTRX] Mankind - Come Go (Honey Soundsystem Remix) [Third Strike Records] Body Language - Falling Out (Honey Soundsystem Remix) [Smoke & Mirrors]
