Liz Truss has gone, and we'll be on to another Prime Minister (or maybe even Boris). At the moment, things seem utterly out of our hands. That is why it's so important we understand what is going on, what historical trends are shaping it, and, even now, what opportunities exist. Claire sat down with Academy of Ideas colleague Jacob Reynolds to do just that. At this moment, the key thing is to listen, read, think and argue. Please share our conversation with everyone you know who is angry, confused and demanding something better.
Ahead of the Battle of Ideas festival 2022 in London on 15 & 16 October, Jacob Reynolds talks to Phil Mullan and Rob Lyons about the turmoil in the financial markets this week and the longer-term problems for the UK economy. For more about the festival, visit the Battle of Ideas festival website.
The theme of this year's The Academy, the weekend residential summer school, is ‘Old Roots of the New Disorder'. The event takes place on 16/17 July. In this special podcast, The Academy convenor Jacob Reynolds talks to Professor Frank Furedi, keynote lecturer, about why at a time when the global geo-political and economic crisis afflicts all dimensions of human existence, The Academy represents an opportunity to gain clarity about our predicament. With the shake-up in geopolitics, we put current events in context through a weekend of lectures and discussions. We'll look to history, literature and philosophy and feature plenary discussions on the origins and breakdown of the post-Cold War era and fatalism and the challenges to agency today. There will also be discussions on history and literature from the Battle of Marathon and the Hungarian Revolution to Ulysses and the modernist solution to Houellebecq and the misery of post-Modernism. Bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds, this is an unmissable event for all those who want to get to grips with a changing world. If you'd like to join us for a weekend of stimulating debate in a beautiful location, book your tickets here
Introduction to the series ‘The elite: old and new', theme of the boi charity's event The Academy, held online in November 2021. Politics has always been inseparable from the question: who has power? In previous eras, the answer to that question was to examine the issue of social class. Today, it is harder to offer such easy answers. Many speak of multiple ‘elites' including business, educational, cultural and media. If traditional elites are in retreat, or anxious to broadcast their support for a new set of ‘progressive' values around race, sex and gender, does this mean that they no longer play such a central role in the management of society? Or is this simply an age-old cycle of elites seeking to mystify their social position? Introduction by Jacob Reynolds, external affairs manager, boi; author, Letters on Liberty: Beyond the Culture Wars THE ACADEMY ONLINE IV: The elite: old and new To view the full programme and some suggested background reading to the talks, please visit https://theboi.co.uk/academy-online-iv ASSOCIATED READING For this lecture you may wish to read:- Hannah Arendt, Truth and Politics, in Between Past and Future, https://amzn.to/3rbtbV2 Peter Mair, Ruling the Void: The hollowing of Western democracy, https://amzn.to/2Zs4SXr THE ACADEMY In the context of today's instrumental approaches to knowledge, The Academy summer school is a modest attempt to demonstrate the value of scholarship, and of the worth of the university as a place of free enquiry dedicated to the pursuit of truth. On 20 June 2020, Battle of Ideas charity hosted The Academy Online, a series of talks and book discussions exploring the theme Psychology and Democracy. In this podcast we feature the opening lecture The frightful crowd: the psychology of ‘the masses’.Today, discussion of crowds, the demos and by implication democracy itself, is pervasive, for example in the debates on how to influence collective actions of the public in the context of coronavirus, or in the Black Lives Matter protests and counter protests and the mobs said to inhabit and fuel the Culture Wars. But the crowd and mass society were objects of study in psychological terms well before the arrival of today’s behavioural scientists and social psychologists. This lecture explores the intellectual history and evolving ideas that have shaped concerns over the frightful crowd. The lecturer is Jacob Reynolds, external affairs manager at the Battle of ideas charity, a convenor of The Academy 2020 and a writer and commentator who specialises in political philosophy.THE ACADEMY 2020: PSYCHOLOGY AND DEMOCRACYThe Academy Online was a mixture of lectures and seminars offering an opportunity to place contemporary events in a historical and philosophical context. The results of yesterday's UK General Election throw up many different issues. Why did the Conservatives end up winning comfortably? Why did the Labour vote collapse, with seats that had voted Labour for decades switching to the Tories? Does the success of the SNP in Scotland mean there will be another independence referendum? What does it all mean for Brexit? Discussing these issues and more are Alastair Donald, Claire Fox, Rob Lyons, Jacob Reynolds and Ella Whelan.
The fashion and apparel industry is the second-largest polluter behind oil and gas, but the negative impacts of this industry are largely unknown to consumers. The rise of fast fashion and lack of regulation in production methods has caused significant damage to our planet. Dr. Lance Cheramie and Jacob Reynolds discuss the problems in the industry and what is being done to solve them.
In the third of our end-of-year round-ups for 2018, the Academy of Ideas team - Claire Fox, Alastair Donald, Geoff Kidder, Rob Lyons, Jacob Reynolds and Ella Whelan - discuss everything non-Brexit in 2018. In the second of our end-of-year round-ups for 2018, the Academy of Ideas team - Claire Fox, Alastair Donald, Geoff Kidder, Rob Lyons, Jacob Reynolds and Ella Whelan - discuss a year of Brexit battles, the prospect of a second referendum and what the future holds for British democracy.
Title: Gummo [Wikipedia] [IMDb] Director: Harmony Korine Producers: Scott Macaulay, Robin O'Hara, Cary Woods, Nifty da Saurus Writer: Harmony Korine Stars: Linda Manz, Max Perlich, Jacob Reynolds, Chloë Sevigny, Jacob Sewell, Nick Sutton Release date: October 17, 1997 SHOWNOTES: Welcome to our rural American nightmare, Collateral Cinema listeners! That's right, hosts Beau, Robert, and Ash go back to the 90s arthouse, as we explore Harmony Korine's (@harmfulkorine) classically disturbing 1997 debut, Gummo. This film challenged us in many, many ways; with it's unique approach to cinematography, complete lack of a three-arc story structure, use of non-actors for realistic impact, stream of consciousness script writing, and the nightmarish dive into the depravity and emptiness of the American dream. This movie is peircing, haunting, disturbing, and unlike anything else released before or since; join us, as we barely scratch the surface of this twisted American psycho-drama, and take a trip with us into the dark underbelly of the American Zeitgeist. [Trigger Warning: some clips may contain homophobic language. Listener discretion is advised.] Collateral Cinema is on Apple Podcasts, Chill Lover Radio, Podcoin, and wherever else you get your podcasts. Adam Rawcliffe is joined by Alastair Donald, Geoff Kidder, Rob Lyons and Jacob Reynolds to reflect on the final matches of World Cup 2018 and the tournament as a whole. Were France worthy winners? What do the team think about the controversial penalty awarded in the final - and the VAR system that enabled the decision? Who was the player of the tournament? Why did England fail to reach the final and how should we assess the team's performance? Was the tournament a success?
Adam Rawcliffe is joined by Alastair Donald, Jacob Reynolds and Hilary Salt to discuss France's semi-final victory over Belgium, England's prospects in their semi-final against Croatia, and the use of football to make political points, from the importance of diversity to rediscovering national pride amid the Brexit negotiations.
Adam Rawcliffe is joined by Geoff Kidder, Rob Lyons and Jacob Reynolds to discuss England's prospects in the quarter-final against Sweden, the pick of the last-16 games, who might progress to the semi-finals and the reaction to England's win over Colombia. [Apologies for the sound of birds tweeting in the background - it's keep-the-windows-open weather!]
Adam Rawcliffe is joined by Rob Lyons, Jacob Reynolds and Izzy Lyons to discuss the ramifications of the London Bridge attack for the election, why the opinion polls are so inconsistent, the state of play in Scotland and what people should consider when deciding who to vote for.
Adam Rawcliffe is joined by Claire Fox, Jacob Furedi and Jacob Reynolds to discuss the political response to the Manchester bombing, the pause in the election campaign, the Tories' u-turn on social-care policy and the need to bring the debate back to Brexit.
We chose The Phoenix Incident, a movie based on real life events surrounding UFO sightings around the Phoenix area in 1997 and the military cover up that followed. From IMDB: Thursday March 13th, 1997 marks the date of the Phoenix Lights, the largest mass UFO sighting in US History. The night of the incident, four Phoenix residents vanished in the Estrella Mountain National Park, south of Phoenix. Glenn Lauder (28), Mitch Adams (29), Ryan Stone (27), and Jacob Reynolds (28) were reported missing to the Maricopa County Sheriff's office. The infamous "Lauder Case" has become the longest unresolved missing person's case in Arizona history.
Worship led by Melanie Johnston.
