Send us a text21 April 2025 US INVASION PLANS FOR CANADA My name is Ian Duncan MacDonald. Today's podcast is a departure from my usual Saturday dividend podcasts. It explores the conflict currently going on between Canada and the United States. A few days ago a podcast listener was excited to discover in my novel, “USING DROUGHT USA” that I had predicted a situation where the president of the United States would initiate a plan to invade Canada to acquire its natural resources That novel was released in 2019. While it is a fictional work, the story is based on long simmering issues within Canada that many Americans may not be aware of. Releasing Chapter 13 of USING DROUGHT USA in this Podcast is a quick way, especially for Americans, to understand why references to Canada becoming a fifty-first state is not viewed by Canadians as a joke. It ignited their suppressed patriotic emotions. Those interested in the action before and after Chapter 13 can go to amazon.com. Using new technology Amazon recently made this novel and my other two novels immediately available as inexpensive audio books. The novels are also available as e-books or a print books. You may be interested in my earlier novel "Duel" which deals with an action packed confrontation between the USA and China for world dominance. To set the scene in Chapter 13 of "Using Drought USA": Dr. Rob Lyons, a US State Department analyst, has journeyed to Calgary to meet with Western Canadian separatists a few days after meeting with Eastern Canadian Separatists. The President had sent him to Canada undercover to investigate how the United States could invade the country and take what they want. The State Department has embedded a communication device in Rob's body to monitor the situation and silently assist him.. In the wake of the huge farmers' protest in London on 10 February, Rob Lyons talks to two Cumbrian farmers, John Shaw and Richard Kerr, along with their accountant Paul Benson, about the state of farming in the UK today. Why farmers are so angry about the Labour government's inheritance tax changes The existing difficulties with making a good living from farming, particularly the power of supermarkets Why it is unfair to blame sheep and cattle farmers for climate change The failure of many politicians to understand why a farm is more than just a business Why, despite all the difficulties, they continue to want to farm - if the government will let them.

In this short episode we will again be visiting Lower House farm, Llandrindod. This time we hear from Dr Rhys Jones, Lecturer from the Department of Life Sciences at Aberystwyth University. Rhys is originally from North Wales, and was raised on an upland beef and sheep farm. He still takes a keen interest in the family farm as well as wider Agriculture issues. His research interests lie within the field of veterinary parasitology, and he's particularly interested in developing sustainable parasite control techniques for livestock producers. Rhys discusses how Rob Lyons has been part of a wider project that includes 16 farms that are looking at Liver Fluke. With liver fluke populations rapidly becoming resistant to certain drug treatments, alternative control strategies which focus on infection avoidance through grazing and land management must be utilised on farms. However, for these measures to be effective, it is imperative that we can accurately identify liver fluke infection risk areas within farms and fields.

Daw Rhys yn wreiddiol o Ogledd Cymru, ac fe'i magwyd ar fferm bîff a defaid yr ucheldir. Mae'n dal i gymryd diddordeb mawr yn y fferm deuluol yn ogystal â materion Amaethyddol ehangach. Mae ei ddiddordebau ymchwil ym maes parasitoleg filfeddygol, ac mae ganddo ddiddordeb arbennig mewn datblygu technegau rheoli parasitiaid cynaliadwy ar gyfer cynhyrchwyr da byw. Mae Rhys yn trafod sut mae Rob Lyons wedi bod yn rhan o brosiect ehangach sy'n cynnwys 16 fferm sy'n edrych ar Lyngyr yr Iau. Wrth i boblogaethau llyngyr yr iau ddatblygu ymwrthedd yn gyflym i rai triniaethau cyffuriau, mae'n rhaid defnyddio strategaethau rheoli amgen sy'n canolbwyntio ar osgoi haint trwy bori a rheoli tir ar ffermydd. Fodd bynnag, er mwyn i'r mesurau hyn fod yn effeithiol, mae'n hollbwysig ein bod yn gallu nodi'n gywir yr ardaloedd lle mae risg o haint llyngyr yr iau ar ffermydd a chaeau.

BBC Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker sparked an enormous row last week after a tweet comparing the government's language around illegal immigration to 1930s Germany. After he was taken off air, many of his colleagues downed tools in support. While Lineker may have made up with BBC management for now, the affair has thrown up lots of questions. Should we take Lineker's comparison seriously? What does the affair say about the current state of free speech in the UK? Are his defenders being opportunistic in defending his right to express his opinions? Is calling for someone you disagree to be ‘cancelled' ever a legitimate tactic? Is impartiality something worth striving for – and is it even possible? And what have we learned about the way political debate is conducted today? Alastair Donald, Claire Fox, Ella Whelan and Rob Lyons kick some ideas around.

One year on from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Professor Frank Furedi talks to Rob Lyons about where things stand today, the causes of the conflict and the potential for peace.
The UK Government's decision to veto a bill passed by the Scottish Government, which would make it easier for children older than 16 to legally change their gender, has set off something of a political storm (a great summary can be found over at Spectator by Iain MacWhirter). Whilst this certainly has ramifications for UK-Scotland political relations, it also has set off a series of debates about gender identity, the rights of women, and even what the bill actually would mean in practice. Without a doubt, these debates are some of the most difficult to navigate in contemporary politics - and also some of the most heated. So we sat down to try and make sense of it all. On this episode of the Podcast of Ideas, Alastair Donald speaks to Susan Smith of For Women Scotland - the heroic campaigning organisation who have been defending the rights of women which are often undercut by legislation aiming to protect trans people. Claire Fox, Ella Whelan and Rob Lyons then join Alastair to mull over some of the implications in a bit more detail.

While Ian Duncan MacDonald is the author of two investment books, “Safer Better Dividend Investing” and “Income and Wealth from Self-Directed Investing”, He is also the author of three novels. Today he wants to introduce you to his novel, “DUEL”. For the last 5 days of April, 2021 a free eBook version of DUEL will be available at amazon.ca/DUEL-Rob-Lyons-1-ebook/dp/B07K6ZMF4In this podcast Ian will be reading Chapter 2 of DUEL. To set the scene, in Chapter 1 we learn that Rob Lyons, an analyst at the State Department, is being sent to the island of Saint Matts to investigate a televised interview by Texas Senator Rick Wilcox. That morning Wilcox stated that the People's Republic of China had secretly leased a long abandoned British naval base on the island. The Caribbean is the United States private lake. European nations have recognized this for more than a hundred years. The idea that an Asian power would dare establish a naval base in the Caribbean is outrageous. The senator has called for a nuclear bomb to be dropped on this traitorous island. For two decades there has been competitive rumblings and posturing between the United States and China. Within the a few years, China is expected to become the richest most powerful nation in the world. How will the United States adapt to losing the dominant primary position it has held for 100 years? The novel deals with a confrontation between the two powerful nations that explodes on the tiny, peaceful, impoverished Caribbean Island of Saint Matts. For decades, the Chinese have been supplying aid to the Caribbean. They filled an aid vacuum once filled by the United States when they feared the spread of Soviet communism.Politicians in Washington, St. Matts and China play important roles in this duel. Rob Lyons becomes caught up in the whirlwind of assassination, power, and romance that swirls around him.In Chapter two the scene opens in the Senator's office just hours after his televised interview. For more information on Ian MacDonald, his books and his art go to his website www.informus,ca
Welcome to this special sports edition of Podcast of Ideas. Alastair Donald is joined by Academy of Ideas colleagues, Geoff Kidder and Rob Lyons, along with Hilary Salt and Simon McKeon, two regular speakers and session producers at the annual Battle of Ideas festival. Over the past week, football has hogged the headlines on the front as well as the back pages as the plan for a new European Super League emerged and then collapsed, almost in the blink of an eye. The headlines claimed this has been the 'biggest fiasco in football history', the 'defeat of greed' and that elites sports has suffered its 'most astounding humiliation. • Why did the European Super League has suddenly emerge now? • What were the main problems with this initiative? • Why did pushing through the ESL run up against the buffers? • Can we read anything deeper into this, culturally or even politically? • What are the ramifications of the ESL's collapse and what about the future – for fans, football, football governance and politics?
LOCKDOWN DEBATE: What should be the role of social media today? If the public square – universities, schools, workplaces, pubs, parks and polling booths – are under some form of lockdown or restriction, is the internet the only viable place to quickly and freely share ideas? And, if so, should we begin to understand Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or Reddit as publishers, platforms or (virtual) public spaces? What kind of regulation – if any – do we need to ensure healthy debate, and what are the legal implications for such changes? In short, in a world when everyone (even David Attenborough) seems to have an online presence, what role does Big Tech play today – and what should it be in the ‘new normal’ of the post-pandemic world? Discussed by Rob Lyons, Andrew Orlowski, Timandra Harkness and Nico Macdonald.
ECONOMY FORUM: The idea of a green recovery from the current slump almost seems like a self-evident good. Who would not want the economy to reach and then exceed the levels of output achieved before the Covid-19 pandemic? And who would not support a cleaner environment or the creation of large numbers of jobs? But dig a little deeper and it becomes clear that things are not as straightforward as they seem. What, for example, are advocates of a green new deal arguing for when they call for a ‘reset’ of the economy? Is the new economy they envisage as positive as it first sounds? Why do they put so much emphasis on tackling inequality? Daniel Ben-Ami and Rob Lyons discuss.
LOCKDOWN DEBATES: During the summer, the lockdown measures imposed in March were dismantled piece by piece. We were even encouraged in August to ‘eat out to help out’. But in the past few weeks, more and more restrictions have been imposed across countries and regions, including the return of lockdown in Wales and Ireland. Can we continue to live with lockdowns and restrictions, or should we find different ways to manage the risk? Indeed, how do we decide? Should we adopt a ‘consequentialist’ approach, adding up the ‘best guess’ costs and benefits of each policy and choosing the one that causes the least harm? Do we choose to emphasise rights and freedoms and live with the consequences as best we can? How should we move forward? Emily Barley, Rob Lyons and Alan Miller discuss.
Adam Boulton and guests discuss the devolution deals across England as the Prime Minister battles on several fronts over coronavirus restrictions. They discuss the government's financial fight with Greater Manchester's Mayor Andy Burnham and assess how damaging this row could be to Boris Johnson particularly in northern England where red wall Conservative MPs have been in mutinous mood. Also, divisions across the House as a Labour frontbencher apologises for calling a Conservative MP 'scum.'In part 1, Adam is joined by Rob Lyons from the Academy of Ideas and Manchester-based journalist Angela Epstein and in part 2 by Sky's chief political correspondent Jon Craig.
ECONOMY FORUM BOOK LAUNCH: Reactions to the coronavirus pandemic have escalated the pre-existing tensions between the US and China and among different Western nations. Confrontations between political globalists and mercantilist nationalists - between supporters of the rules-based international order and proponents of overt protectionism - are fuelling ever-stronger international resentments. Coupling argumentative rigour with a pragmatic, plainspoken approach, Phil Mullan charts a novel, democratic way past dangerous and self-defeating confrontations towards a future of open international collaboration based on popular participation within nation states. With its clear-eyed assessment of the opportunities and challenges of a more interconnected world - an assessment in which the economic internationalisation underpinning globalisation theories is neither romanticised nor vilified - Beyond Confrontation sets a judicious tone for the big geopolitical themes of our times. Phil Mullan and Rob Lyons discuss.

For months the lockdown has starved us of sport. But in the past couple of weeks it has made something of a return.
