POPULARITY
On the Saturday February 21, 2026 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we’ll meet artist Michael Townsend. Have you heard about the Netflix movie “Secret Mall Apartment”? It’s the wildly popular story, set in the early two thousands, about a group of eight young artists and friends from Rhode Island who secretly built and lived in a hidden 750-square-foot apartment inside the busy Providence Place Mall in Providence, Rhode Island. They discovered an unused "nowhere space" in the mall's structure, snuck in furniture, tapped into electricity, constructed walls (including smuggling in over 2 tons of cinderblock to build a fortified, lockable entrance), and even furnished it with everyday items like a TV, gaming system, books, and couches—all while filming much of the process themselves. They lived there undetected for four years (until 2007), when they were eventually caught and charged with trespassing. Then, Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol of “Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie.” The movie, which blends footage from the 2007–2009 web series of the same name, begins with unemployed musicians Matt and Jay (Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol) hatching a plan to land a gig at the legendary Rivoli on Queen Street West in Toronto. Without contacting the club, writing any songs or practising, they decide to parachute off the CN Tower into the Skydome during a baseball game to announce the show in front of a stunned crowd. What could go wrong? Well, lots. No spoilers here, but when their skydiving stunt doesn’t get them the Rivoli gig, they (along with their camera guy Jared Raab) find themselves accidentally traveling back to the year 2008, and struggling to find a way back to the future.

Now, they've adapted that project into a feature film, fittingly titled Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie. During the Toronto International Film Festival back in September, Jay and Matt sat down with Tom Power to discuss the film, their friendship, the perils of fame and how they convincingly staged a wild stunt to jump off the CN Tower and parachute into the SkyDome.

"Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie" is a Canadian time-travel mockumentary-adventure film directed by Matt Johnson ("BlackBerry") and written by Johnson and Jay McCarrol. The film stars Johnson and McCarrol as fictionalised versions of themselves in a band called "Nirvanna the Band" as they attempt to book a gig at the Rivoli, a bar and restaurant in Toronto, even though they have never actually written or recorded a single song, nor taken any steps to contact the Rivoli's management about booking a show. A new plan to play the Rivoli goes wrong, sending Matt, Jay, and their friend/cameraman Jared back in time to 2008, leaving them stranded unless they can find a way back to the future. The film is based on Johnson and McCarrol's 2007–2009 web series "Nirvana the Band the Show," as well as its 2017–2018 sequel television series "Nirvanna the Band the Show." The film had its world premiere at the 2025 South by Southwest film festival, where it received positive reviews for its premise, humor, performances, writing, and direction with such a small budget. Johnson and McCarrol were both kind enough to spend some time talking with us about their work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which will open in theaters from NEON on February 13th. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Some movies are about finally arriving somewhere. ‘Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie' is about two people refusing to stop walking the same thankless path together. Built from decades‑old footage, rewritten realities, real stunts, and a running gag that has never paid off, the film disguises something deeply human inside its most absurd impulses. Beneath the time travel, the public stunts, and the escalating chaos sits a simple question the movie never stops asking: what does it mean to keep choosing the same collaborator, the same friend, long after logic says it would be easier to move on?That tension animates both the film and this conversation with Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol, who have been in and building some version of Nirvanna The Band together for nearly twenty years. While the finished movie feels precise and inevitable, Johnson was clear that its existence was anything but. There was no groundswell of industry interest, no clean path from cult series to feature film. The only reason it exists is because of a blank check they received after the success of their film, "Blackberry."
Amy Millan is here to discuss her latest and deeply personal solo album, I Went to Find You, remembering Dallas Good of the Sadies, finally, as an adult and as an artist, processing the sudden death of her father when she was only five years old, how a person's actual age might be different than their spiritual age, the key role that producer Jay McCarrol and her longtime partner and musical collaborator Evan Cranley played in shaping the sound and tone of this record and the eerie significance of the production crew being dubbed "the Diamonds," updates about Stars and their indefinite hiatus, solo tour dates, other future plans, and much more.EVERY OTHER COMPLETE KREATIVE KONTROL EPISODE IS ONLY ACCESSIBLE TO PATREON SUPPORTERS STARTING AT $6/MONTH. Lifelong best friends and creative partners Jay McCarrol and Matt Johnson began their careers making the viral web series-turned-TV show “Nirvanna the Band the Show.” Now, they've adapted that project into a buzzy new feature film, fittingly titled “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie.” It just had its Canadian premiere in the Midnight Madness program at the Toronto International Film Festival. Daniel, Shahbaz, and Anthony review Matt Johnson's NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE at TIFF 50 starring Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol. When Matt presses Jay to partake in their most death-defying publicity stunt yet, it goes spectacularly sideways, and the fallout inspires Jay to strike out on his own. But thanks to Matt's inadvertent intervention with a short-lived Canadian novelty beverage (remember Orbitz?), the boys find themselves travelling through time where they risk compromising their very own origin story. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a pair of old friends who dive right in on some light-hearted topics like death and aging: Amy Millan and Kevin Drew. Both Amy and Kevin are deeply connected to the Canadian indie scene that took shape in the late 1990s around Broken Social Scene. That band was initially Kevin's baby, but a whole constellation seemed to spring from it, including Metric, Feist, and the band that Amy is most closely associated with, Stars. The impetus for today's conversation, though, is Millan's gorgeous new solo album, I Went to Find You. It's her first in 15 years, and as you'll hear in this conversation, was inspired by stirred-up feelings about the death of her father when she was just a little kid. Millan created the album with a musician she only met recently, Jay McCarrol, after a chance encounter with him that stirred up some dormant emotions about her childhood. It's a really beautiful and quietly triumphant record that's worth some time and attention in your headphones. Check out “Kiss That Summer” right here. Kevin Drew directed that great video for that song, and he's got bona fides when it comes to writing songs about difficult subjects, too: His latest solo album, Aging, came out in 2023, and you might be able to guess what it's about from that title. It's a topic that Kevin and Amy get into here as they get deep and sweet together—they were even a little worried they'd forget they were being recorded since they're such close friends. They talk about Amy's record but also, perhaps for the first time on Talkhouse, perimenopause. There's also memories of Hal Willner, a great name for Amy's tour that she didn't end up using, and living in your “who gives a fuck” years. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Amy Millan and Kevin Drew for chatting. In this chat, we get to meet Amy Millan. Amy is best known as co-bandleader of the Canadian band Stars, as well as her side gig as a member of Broken Social Scene. But now, she has a brand new solo record out - her third, in fact, and first since 2009 - called I Went to Find You. In this conversation, we talk a lot about this new record, from its thematic inspirations to its initiation, from the close collaboration she found with co-songwriter and co-producer Jay McCarrol to what it means for her to back in a solo capacity after all these years. We do, of course, talk about Stars, especially their 2004 album Set Yourself on Fire, whose 20th birthday the band is still celebrating. We touch on what that album means to her now, to us the listeners now, some band lore, and more. It's been many years in the making, this conversation, and I'm thrilled it finally happened. Thank you for listening.
Amy Millan is back with her first solo album in 16 years, I Went To Find You, out May 30th. She sits down with Lana to talk about the serendipitous meeting with collaborator Jay McCarrol, how some of the most sonic secret weapons are closest to home, and the incredibly moving true meaning behind the album title.

Season Finale! Comedians and friends Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol are here to discuss Grizzly Man and other Werner Herzog films... then Finn and Billy create a new Tom Hiddleston/Sean Penn vehicle.
Dwarven Moss started when D&D expert Tom Hodgins wanted to ignite an old passion of his by playing some D&D, so he recruited his friends, comedian Kris Siddiqi, and musician Jay McCarrol to play their very first official campaign. Jay, having a studio already setup in his dungeon suggested that they record their game as a kind of personal keepsake for the group. Upon listening back they slowly started adding post production effects and original music to pad the story and before they knew it things had spiraled and out of control taking on a life of its own - Dwarven Moss was born. Dwarven Moss produces a unique listening experience unlike other actual-play D&D podcasts. The journey captures their fun and improvised collective storytelling along the way, in real time The end result is like an old fashioned radio play.
For this episode I had a chat with DIY filmmaker Matt Johnson. Matt has found critical acclaim with his 2013 film The Dirties, a found-footage mockumentary film tackling the much discussed topic of gun control and bullying in a high school, which went on to win the Grand Jury Prize at the Slamdance Film Festival. His following film Operation Avalanche saw him and his team infiltrate NASA to shoot another found footage project based around the topic of the Apollo 11 moon landings. Were the moon landings fake? Watch the film AND YOU DECIDE. But most recently, he has co-written and starred in the Vice comedy series Nirvanna The Band The Show with Jay McCarrol, where he plays a helpless musician, possibly with a large chip in his brain coming up with plans and schemes to play at his favourite restaurant. Sit back to our chat with a martini and steak bake... For more updates follow the podcast on Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/thecupodcast/
