Jo and Adam discuss Louis Theroux's latest feature-length Netflix documentary, 'Inside the Manosphere'. exploring the role of humour in his filmmaking. From awkward timing and fourth-wall breaks to defamiliarisation and deadpan observation, they discuss what Theroux's distinctive (and often parodied) style owes to satire. They then turn to one of the most talked-about novels of the summer, Caro Claire Burke's 'Yesteryear', a satirical take on influencer culture, tradwife aesthetics, and the manosphere. Along the way they consider the novel's controversial relationship to the real-world phenomenon of Ballerina Farm and the online debates it has inspired. Also featuring: hot weather, Noel Coward, nipples and a update from Adam on his recent visiting fellowship at Ghent University, where he delivered a talk on cannibal satire.

Clerks III (2022)Director: Kevin SmithCast: Brian O'Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Jason Mewes, Kevin SmithKevin Smith had a heart attack, rewrote his legacy, and somehow made a movie that retroactively makes us like his older films less. This week on Dewey Pod Monster, we close out "April and the Threequel" by finally confronting the most threatened episode in show history: Clerks III. We've been dreading this one for four years. It was worse than we remembered. In this episode, we discuss:The Nostalgia Cash-In That Went Too Far — Clerks III is essentially Kevin Smith remaking his own movie while reselling a heart attack story you've already heard on his podcast and live tour. We've paid for this content before.Comedy That Forgot to Be Funny — The film swings for emotional drama without earning it, leaving beloved characters stranded in a tone that doesn't fit them. It's neither funny enough to work as a comedy nor written well enough to land as a drama. The Rosario Dawson Problem — She was one of the best things about Clerks II, and here she's reduced to a ghost who tells her grieving husband she's sleeping with celebrities in heaven. It's a baffling choice that retroactively damages the previous film's ending.Who the Hell Is This Movie For? — Too recycled for longtime fans and too niche for newcomers, Clerks III only seems to work if you watched it live with Kevin Smith in the room. At home on your couch, it just doesn't work.We Also Talked About:WrestleMania 42 (ESPN) (2026) — Both hosts tuned in out of habit and left empty. Over-commercialization, ads during wrestler entrances, a CM Punk vs. Roman Reigns main event that nobody asked for, and a streaming situation so fragmented neither host could even find where to watch it.Louis Theroux Documentaries (Dailymotion) — Sean went deep into Theroux's hour-long doc series including Extreme Love (dementia and caregiving), a trans kids episode, and Heroin Town USA — a gutting look at opiate addiction in a small Virginia town from the mid-2010s.Cop Game (Tubi) (1988) — Directed by Bruno Mattei under the alias Bob Hunter, this Filipino-shot Vietnam War action film stars Brent Huff and features miniature toy cars in chase scenes, two songs on a loop, and an ending so abrupt it barely qualifies as one. Sean watched it. He has regrets. He's still going to watch more Bruno Mattei films.Hellmare Trailer (Youtube)— John got an early look at this upcoming horror film from local filmmaker Victor Gabriel (of Blood Gorge and Cruel), and he's genuinely excited. Meta horror elements, great visuals, real craft on display. A small premiere is coming — watch this space.Movie Theater Massacre (Tubi) (2023) — Shot at the historic Redford Theater in Redford, Michigan, this COVID-era local slasher features a butter knife as a murder weapon and a Linnea Quigley cameo. It's not great. It exists.Scanner Cop 2 (Youtube) (1995)— John watched it. His dog was audibly disturbed by the psychic screaming noises. Kane Hodder is in it. Robert Forster is in it and deserved better. The highlight is a villain who threatens to "kill you so bad."New episodes of the Dewey Pod Monster podcast drop every week. **Whoopi Goldberg and Sara Haines Share Playful Moment on The View**On the April 23 episode of *The View*, Whoopi Goldberg and Sara Haines had a lighthearted exchange during a segment featuring Justin Theroux, who discussed working with Meryl Streep in *The Devil Wears Prada 2*. “Why is everyone hitting each other?” Theroux asked, tapping Running Point costar Kate Hudson and Sunny Hostin, while Goldberg looked visibly annoyed, shaking her head. When Hostin questioned, “You want to give Marjorie Taylor Greene a big bear hug?” she remained steadfast in her stance, prompting Goldberg to interject, “Let her tell you what she wants to do.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
The so-called 'manosphere' has been in the headlines following Louis Theroux's documentary into the network of influencers promoting hyper masculine viewpoints and spreading misogyny. These influencers, who were once fringe, are now very much in mainstream. And while Theroux's documentary focused on the personalities of these people themselves, others are interested in the real life impact on our young boys and girls. Dr Marcelle Nader-Turner is a counsellor and neuropsychotherapist based at St Hilda's Collegiate School in Dunedin and sees first-hand how “manosphere” is pressuring how our rangatahi behave with unhelpful stereotypes. MUMFORD & KAISER - The Funosphere!

In this episode from our archives, we are joined by legendary travel writer Paul Theroux for a candid, backstage interview delving into his five decades spent traveling the world and writing about it. Paul discusses what brought him to traveling and to writing, and how those two things are inexorably linked, at least for him. He remarks on why he thinks that growing up in a big family helped teach him how to be a good traveler. He also explains what it means to travel "close to the ground" and offers advice on how to do so (and why you would want to).Grab a copy of Theroux's latest book, On the Plain of Snakes: A Mexican Journey here. ***The Bittersweet Life podcast has been on the air for an impressive 10+ years! Did we all need a streaming manosphere documentary? Many did. Did we need one made in the GenX stop-and-mug slacker analysis-avoiding style of Louis Theroux? Debatable. Today we review Theroux's Inside the Manosphere: its aesthetic mimicry of manosphere style, a potential ethics issue, how monetizing misogyny interacts with the gigwork incentives of OnlyFans, how all the bravado covers for legitimate fears, but only pays out at the top. Many Mexican Americans this past week were devastated to learn that a hero of the UFW and the broader Chicano Movement, Cesar Chavez, was a coercive serial abuser and pedophile. I say many: because many women knew, connected and informed by a whisper network dating back over decades, and maintained by the pressure to not degrade the status and gains of the movement itself. Off the top today, we look at the influence of the Synanon cult on Chavez's tactics. Geeky solo vid! Netflix just dropped Louis Theroux's new documentary Inside the Manosphere and folks, it's pure, unfiltered cope. The same guy who used to poke at weird cults is now wandering through the world of red pill influencers, fitness bros, and guys actually telling young men to lift weights and stop simping — and instead of admitting that a lot of this stuff is blowing up because legacy media and Hollywood spent years screwing over boys, Theroux basically shrugs and says “yeah it's highly profitable to be a dick on the internet.” No kidding, Louis. Turns out when you give men some straight talk instead of endless guilt trips, they tune in and the algorithms reward it. He even had to tip-toe around Joe Rogan while trying to paint the whole scene as some dangerous grift. Meanwhile the real grift is Netflix acting like this documentary is brave journalism when it's just another sad attempt to pathologize masculinity in 2026. If you're tired of the hand-wringing, this one's worth watching just to see how hard they're coping."Watch the podcast episodes on YouTube and all major podcast hosts including Spotify.CLOWNFISH TV is an independent, opinionated news and commentary podcast that covers Entertainment and Tech from a consumer's point of view. Off the back of Louis Theroux's latest documentary, Marina and Jemma unpack the men building huge online audiences by selling a version of masculinity that feels equal parts contradictory and deeply revealing. From the obsession with status, money and 'high value' women, to the glaring emotional vulnerability sitting just beneath the surface it's a conversation about what's really going on here, and why it's resonating. They dig into the damage, the loneliness, and the logic (or lack of it) behind it all, including the men who seem so close to self-awareness, yet never quite get there. There's also a look at the role other men play in challenging (or enabling) this behaviour, and why calling it out still feels so rare. They also lose it laughing at points because as ever the internet has delivered...When they're not laughing there are reminders too that, actually, confidence, kindness and emotional intelligence remain infinitely more attractive than whatever's being peddled online.A brilliant pudding from Russell Kane rounds it off. Ask Rachel anythingThree years ago we were asked by a listener to discuss how we can talk to boys about influential online figures like Andrew Tate, who act both as an inspiration to achieve great things, and a lightning rod for disgruntled men who blame feminism for their ills and cheer on his particular form of aggressive misogyny. Now that Louis Theroux has shone a light on the Manosphere in his latest Netflix documentary I thought it important to dust off this old episode because the information is far more detailed, and useful for parents of tweens and teens. Whether the words Red Pill, Matrix, and Manosphere have any particular meaning for you, they are having an increasing impact on the environment our boys are growing up in. It's up to us as parents to help our boys unpack what they're hearing and sift the diamonds from the dirt. My research into the topic has highlighted an urgent need to be talking with our sons about their dreams, and how we can support them in discovering role models who show what it is to be a successful man, without needing to humiliate and destroy other people. Click here for tips and advice from the episode:Avoid silencing your teen, even if you disagree with what they say. It's vital that they are given the chance to talk about what they're thinking so that you can have proper discussions about it. Telling them they are wrong won't help them think about the issues.Focus the discussion on what is really attractive to them about the messages they are hearing, and help them to differentiate between the positive and the dangerously negative.Unpick the words the boys use and be clear about anything that is sexist, racist, etc and why that's an issue. Remember, they are building their identity and they're allowed to make mistakes along the way. Don't shame them.Arm yourself with real facts. If they tell you something that they've heard online help them to go to real sources, rather than simply listening to someone who has an agenda and wants to get lots of clicks.Don't just focus on Tate, he's only one of the people espousing this thinking.Potential role models: Look for men in your own community firstGreg James Mark Lewis: https://www.marklewis.co.uk/Novak Djokovic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=867mtHTsaDoStephen Bartlett - Diary of a CEO (Business) His podcast has lots of successful men being interviewed.KSI, Beta Squad, Sidemen, Mr Beast, Chris MD. Last week, Netflix dropped Louis Theroux's exploration of the manosphere. But, some watchers of the patriarchal online world were left unimpressed. James Bloodworth, who embedded himself in the manosphere for his book Lost Boys, was "underwhelmed". He tells PoliticsJOE why. In his documentary, Theroux meets several prominent manosphere figures, including HSTikkyTokky and Jay Waller, who argue that modern society disadvantages men and that women hold too much power in relationships. Mixing self-help advice, fitness and financial motivation with messages that critics say are misogynistic or manipulative, Theroux questions their beliefs, challenges their claims about masculinity and dating, and explores how their upbringings may have led them to their views on gender. British Airways has paused its sponsorship of The Louis Theroux Podcast following an interview with Bob Vylan's frontman. Pascal Robinson-Foster, one half of the controversial punk duo, told Theroux in an episode which aired a few days ago that he was "not regretful" of chanting "death, death to the IDF " at this year's Glastonbury music festival. He added that he would "do it again, twice on Sundays." British Airways said on Saturday that the content "breaches" its sponsorship policy and has since paused its advertising on the podcast. Meanwhile, there is pressure from the Jewish community and elsewhere on the BBC to withdraw its support for the Louis Theroux Podcast after he referred in the podcast interview to Zionism as "a form of white supremacy." In March of this year, the eyes of the world turned towards the occupied West Bank when the film ‘No Other Land', which tells the story of Israel's forced displacement of Palestinians in the region, won the Oscar for best documentary feature. Two months later, The Settlers, a BBC documentary where broadcaster and journalist Louis Theroux meets the growing community of religious-nationalist Israelis who have settled in the occupied territories, went viral.Driving around the West Bank, 14 years on from his first visit to the area, Theroux said “much was still the same” in the occupied zone. “The same sense of a two-tier society: Jewish settlers who lived protected under Israeli civil law; Palestinians who were subject to an opaque regime of military rule, with roads closed, life made difficult in ways big and small,” he wrote in a Guardian newspaper in May.Yet, the situation in the West Bank is not what it was a few years ago. In January 2025, Israel launched its Iron Wall military operation which left tens of thousands of Palestinians without proper shelter or healthcare, while the expansion of Israeli settlements – which are illegal under international law – has rapidly increased since Hamas's October 7th attack on Israel in 2023.In May, Israel announced that 22 new Jewish settlements had been approved in the occupied West Bank – the biggest expansion in decades.Meanwhile, in Ireland, the pre-legislative scrutiny of the Occupied Territories Bill, which would ban trade in goods with the occupied Palestinian territories, is continuing. But even if it passes, what will this Irish legislation actually achieve? Irish Times journalist Sally Hayden reports from the West Bank. Presented by Sorcha Pollak. Produced by Suzanne Brennan and Andrew McNair. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

After a lackluster decade of documentaries, Theroux returns with one of his finest, most important - and most timely - ever, on Israeli colonization of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. It says the quiet part out loud - it never has been about how the Palestinians behave, it's always been about ethnic cleansing.

He started with the Mirror To Damascus in 1967 and with more than half a century and 18 travel books later published his journey along the Amur River just a few years ago. He's a contemporary of Theroux, Chatwin, early Dalrymple and inspiration for the newer generation of his genre, the likes of Rory Stewart, Levison Wood and many, many more. Colin has been a dream guest of mine for many years. This interview travelled a line across the map of his career. Colin reflects on his many experiences in Russia and China, the impact of historical events like the Cultural Revolution, the collapse of the Soviet Union - and the broader evolution of travel writing throughout the years. He gets into the effects of globalisation on cultural identities and how it's effected his experience over the decades. Colin observes the complexities of nationalism and patriotism, and as well discusses the role religion in his life, the nature of belief, and the rationality behind it all. Colin then comments on mortality and his legacy which leads to a discussion on how travel can serve as a coping mechanism for grief. Plus, together we also touch on the choices and more difficult trade offs surrounding parenthood and career, his aspirations for future literary projects, and the influence of serendipity behind it all. Israeli soldiers have been harassing a Palestinian activist who appeared in Louis Theroux's recent documentary The Settlers to talk about Israel's apartheid abuses in the occupied West Bank. Issa Amro shared footage of IDF troops raiding his home over the weekend, days after Theroux's film debuted on the BBC. Israelis not only murder journalists, attack journalistic institutions and block journalists from entering the Gaza Strip, they also persecute Palestinian civilians who speak with journalists. On Channel 4, there's Paul Abbott's bold but baffling two-part drama, The Secret Life of Michael Fry about a council worker who finds himself out of his depth in a Welsh town. Finally, Luke gets quizzed on the charts of the time.
