On this episode, I'm joined by Otobong Nkanga as we discuss her latest commission, Cadence, on view at the MoMA now through summer 2025. I first discovered her work when I wrote about her earlier this year for the summer issue of Sculpture Magazine.Otobong Nkanga, a multidisciplinary visual artist born in Nigeria and based in Antwerp, Belgium, explores themes of memory, identity, and the complex relationships between people and their environment. Nkanga's art is deeply rooted in storytelling, using materials like minerals, textiles, and organic substances to narrate humanity's interaction with land and resources. Nkanga's work has garnered international acclaim, including numerous exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as Tate Modern, Castello di Rivoli, and the Venice Biennale. In 2019, she received the Sharjah Biennial Prize and the prestigious Ultima Prize for Visual Arts in Belgium. Her ongoing project Carved to Flow, which merges art, community, and sustainability, exemplifies her commitment to creating dialogues around ethical consumption and interconnectedness. Nkanga's innovative work continues to influence contemporary art, prompting critical reflections on the ties between ecology, culture, and the global economy.

You can send me a text if you have a comment or questionThe last invasion of Britain and Napoleon's Rivoli campaign along with his final drive towards Vienna obviously deserve to be in one single episode.  Not.It is merely the conceit of combining all the land warfare of 1797 into a single episode that allows this.  The Fishguard invasion is only rivalled for drama, action, and intensity by the Texas Chicken War of 1719.  The Rivoli campaign is truly a marvel of Napoleonic warfare.   Napoleon defeats a 50,000 man Austrian army and turns it into a mass of 13,000 refugees.  The Austrians raise another army, under their best general, Archduke Charles, only to see that one destroyed as well.  There is nothing between Napoleon and Vienna.  The Empire is forced to sign a one sided peace by Napoleon.

The Phantom of the Opera by Jennifer Basset原文Chapter 10: Madame Gigy visits the PersianFor weeks, all Paris talked about that night at the Opera.Everybody asked questions, but nobody knew the answers.Where was Christine Daae? Where was the Vicome de Chagny? Were they alive, or dead? And the Phantom of the Opera …?Some weeks after that famous night, Madame Giry went out one afternoon to a small house near the Rivoli gardens. She went in and up the stairs to some rooms at the top of the house. The Persian open the door.Madam, God looked at him."My friend, you know the answers. Please tell me. Are they alive or dead?""Come in,"the Persian said quietly. They sat down on some chairs by the window, and looked out across the Rivoli gardens."Yes," the Persian said slowly, "The Phantom is dead now. He did not want to live any longer. I saw his body three days ago, and because of that, I can talk to you about him. He cannot kill me now.""So the Phantom was really a man? " Madame Giry asked."Yes, his name was Erik. That was not his real name, of course. He was born in France, but I knew him in Persia. He was a famous builder and I worked with him there. For a time I was his friend, but not for long. When he came to Paris, I came after him – I wanted to watch him. He was a very clever, very dangerous man. He could be in two, or three, places at the same time. He could be in one place, and his voice could come from another place. He could do many clever things with ropes and mirrors, and secret doors. You see, he helped to build the Opera House. He built secret passages underground, and his secret house on the lake. He could not live in the outside world, because of his terrible, ugly face. Unhappy Erik! We can feel sorry for him,Madame Giry. He was so clever... and so ugly.People screamed when they saw his face. And so he lived this strange life - Half man – Half phantom. But he was a man, in the end. He wanted a woman's love. He stopped. And Madame Giry asked quietly, "And Christine Daae and VicomteRaoul? What happened to them?"The Persian smiled."Ah yes! What happened to young Raoul and the beautiful Christine...? Who knows."Nobody in Paris ever saw Raoul and Christine again.Perhaps they took a train to the north, and lived a quiet happy life together there.Perhaps Christine's wonderful voice is still singing, somewhere in the cold and beautiful mountains of Norway.Who knows.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 23, 2024 is: rue • ROO • verb To rue something is to feel penitence, remorse, or regret for it. Rue is often used in the phrase "rue the day." // I rue the day I signed that infernal contract. See the entry > Examples: "The hope is that new AI laws would be carefully crafted and tuned to the particulars associated with data training for generative AI. There are plenty of counterarguments to this notion of devising new AI laws for this purpose. One concern is that any such new AI law will open the floodgates for all manner of copyright infringement. We will rue the day that we allowed such new AI laws to land on the books. No matter how hard you try to confine this to just AI data training, others will sneakily or cleverly find loopholes that will amount to unfettered and rampant copyright infringement." — Lance Eliot, Forbes, 26 Feb. 2023 Did you know? If you remember your high school French, or if you've ever strolled down the Rue de Rivoli in Paris, you may have the notion that the English word rue is somehow connected to the French word for "street." In actuality, the French and English words are not related at all. Indeed, the English rue traveled its own road: it comes originally from the Old English word hrēow, meaning "sorrow." Used as both a noun meaning "sorrow, regret," and, more frequently, a verb meaning "to feel sorrow or regret for something," rue is very old, dating to before the 12th century. As for the rue that refers to an aromatic culinary and medicinal herb, that word has another history altogether, coming ultimately from the Greek word rhytē.

Last week, on Thursday to be precise, our friends Isabelle and Thierry, Pietro and I, got on our bikes for a trip to Paris. Our destination? The Centre Pompidou, also known as Beaubourg. Until 1 July, the museum is showing an exceptional retrospective of the sculptor Brancusi. It's an extraordinary museum, with one of the best views of Paris. On the way back, we took the rue de Rivoli, which is now reserved for bicycles (but still has a lane for buses and taxis) and runs alongside the Louvre and the Tuileries gardens. We turned off towards the Madeleine, then the Gare Saint-Lazare, the 17th arrondissement, Neuilly, the Levallois bridge and we were back home. We left at 1.30pm. So it was a nice ride, which of course also included a gourmet break, as you'll discover in this episode recorded on the spot!  In the notes accompanying the transcript, I'm going to suggest three sentences for you to repeat! Yes, three because I find them interesting. I'll explain my choice for each one, pointing out a few things along the way, but I can already tell you that the idea behind these choices is to practise speaking French as you would in everyday life.  www.cultivateyourfrench.com

It is the first major group exhibition in the United States to envision a new approach to contemporary art in the Caribbean diaspora, foregrounding forms that reveal new modes of thinking about identity and place. Over 20 artists are featured in this exhibition, many of whom live in the Caribbean or are of Caribbean heritage. "Forecast Form originated at the MCA Chicago. It was curated by Carla Acevedo-Yates, with Iris Colburn, Isabel Casso and Nolan Jimbo. This segment with Fernández was recorded in 2014 when Fernández  created a major new series of installations for MASS MoCA in North Adams, Mass. Titled “As Above So Below.” That show included three large-scale installations that are informed by Fernández's interest in landscape, art about landscape, and our perception of landscape, including Black Sun, Sfumato (Epic) and Lunar (Theatre).  In 2005 Fernández received a MacArthur Foundation “genius” fellowship. We sit down with our friend Chris Rivoli to discuss Clarence Thomas, his unethical dealings, and his ties to Bohemian Grove. What is Bohemian Grove and why should we care? "Bohemian Grove is a remote 2,700-acre camp nestled among the redwoods in Monte Rio, a small Sonoma County town along the Russian River. The site plays home to a controversial two-weeklong yearly gathering of political leaders — sometimes including presidents — and captains of industry. It's held in July. The list of attendees and what goes on inside the heavily guarded encampment is kept secret, though stories of attendees, their antics and traditions have leaked out over the years." https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/what-need-know-sonoma-county-retreat-bohemian-17882616.php Give Chris a follow! https://www.instagram.com/chrisrivoli The Bohemian Grove conspiracy theory revolves around the annual gathering of a men-only club called the Bohemian Club in a secluded forest in California. According to the theory, this secret society consists of wealthy and powerful men from various fields, including politics, business, and entertainment, who allegedly engage in occult rituals and make important decisions that affect the world's population. The conspiracy theory suggests that the club's members are part of a global elite that seeks to create a New World Order, and that the gatherings at the Bohemian Grove serve as a meeting place to discuss and plan their agendas. The theory also claims that these gatherings involve human sacrifice, secret societies, and worship of a giant owl statue called Moloch. Despite the lack of concrete evidence to support these claims, the Bohemian Grove conspiracy theory has gained significant traction among some segments of society, particularly among those who are skeptical of government and the mainstream media. Many people view the Bohemian Grove as a symbol of the power and influence of the elite, and as evidence of a hidden agenda that seeks to control the world's population. Conspiracy Beer Me.
