⚠️ FULL SPOILERS. If you haven't read the book or seen Project Hail Mary yet, do that first, then come back.Andy Weir fans have been waiting for this one. The 2021 bestselling novel finally makes its big screen debut and this is the kind of movie that reminds you what movie magic can actually feel like.Ryan Gosling (star and producer), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall, The Zone of Interest), directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, Spider-Verse), and the voice and puppetry team behind Rocky team up to bring Weir's epic to life. It's a tall order given how many people love this book and how many millions were absorbed by Ray Porter's unrivaled audiobook narration.Sohrab and Roya break it all down. Does Gosling nail the balance of Grace, the goofy, brilliant, emotionally isolated scientist thrust into an impossible mission? Does Hüller carry the cold, commanding presence of Strat with the laser focus the role demands? And how do you bring a faceless alien to life and make the entire audience fall in love with him?Weir does it again, a story built on optimism, science, intelligence, and teamwork against insurmountable odds. Ted Lasso comes to mind: even in the darkest moments, there is always a place for hope. You feel that in every scene.Yes, things were cut from the book. Yes, changes were made. Are there some bumps and decisions we didn't fully understand on first viewing? Sure. Does this still deliver? Hell yes.Project Hail Mary has already locked its place on the best films of 2026 list and its theatrical run has been extended, including on IMAX. See it on the biggest screen you can. Kenny and Mike discuss and spot faith in the popular film Project Hail Mary.  Based on the novel by Andy Weir (The Martian) The film was directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and stars Ryan Gosling, Sandra Huller, and James Ortiz. Named after the term for desperate, last minute plays in sports, the film tells the story of a desperate space mission to discover a way to stop a mysterious substance named Astrophage (Star-eater) that is killing the Sun and other stars.  Ryland Grace (Gosling) a Jr. High biology teacher is recruited by an Govenrment agent and scientist Eva Stratt (Huller) to work on a project to find a way to save the Sun. After discovering a nearby star (Tau Ceti) that seems not to be impacted by the astrophage, a mission is planned to travel to Tau Ceti and discover how it is combatting the astrophage.  Since there is not enough room for fuel for a return trip, the mission is considered to be a suicide mission.  Upon arrival, Grace discovers a spaceship has been sent by Eridani, another planet seeking to also find out how to save it's star. Grace and  Rocky, the pilot/scientist from Eridani must work together despite requiring different atmospheres and speaking different languages in order to discover the secret and save their planets' populations.  Faith Reflected: The major faith element reflected is the need for community, putting aside difference and working together for the common good. Accepting differences and working with other groups who have differing beliefs and practices does not mean that one is abandoning one's belief or practices. Community can and should be established with others faith communities, political organizations, nations, and social groups.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's Project Hail Mary is an exceptionally audience-friendly adaptation of Andy Weir's novel of the same name, offsetting the story's doomsday scenario with lots of jokes, a charismatic lead, and most especially the buddy dynamic between Ryan Gosling's human protagonist and an alien engineer named Rocky. The film's light touch has made it a hit, but it also left some of your Next Picture Show hosts wanting more, as we break down in our discussion of the new film before turning to Connections and a companion film that's as prickly as Project Hail Mary is cuddly: Douglas Trumbull's 1972 directorial feature debut, Silent Running. Sure, both films explore the idea of a lonely man finding human connection in a non-human companion, the threat of worldwide ecological collapse, and the question of what we owe the Earth and what causes are worth dying for, but each takes a very different approach, to very different effect... as do the several other films we considered pairing with PHM, which we collectively recommend in Your Next Picture Show. Based on the bestselling novel by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary is a high-stakes sci-fi thriller centered on Ryland Grace, a scientist who wakes up aboard a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He soon discovers he is humanity's sole hope for survival, tasked with solving a cosmic mystery to save Earth from an extinction-level threat. As his memories slowly return, Grace must utilize his scientific ingenuity and form an unlikely alliance in the vast loneliness of deep space to complete his desperate mission. In the movie “Project Hail Mary”, scientists learn that in a few years, planet Earth will become unlivable and they need a way to prevent that. Who do ya call? Ken from the “Barbie” movie or rather, Ryan Gosling as Dr. Ryland Grace. Dr. Grace is a sheepish, introverted former molecular biologist turned middle school science teacher who is recruited into this program by the mysterious Stratt, played by Sandra Huller. Grace works on how to keep this microorganism in space, called “astrophage”, from siphoning the sun's energy and destroying life on Earth. Circumstances eventually sees Grace sent into space where he has to use what they've learned on Earth to try to fight the astrophage. Along the way, Grace meets an alien who's world is also in danger from the astrophage. Grace and the alien develop a working relationship and then a friendship and Grace names his new buddy, Rocky. Grace and Rocky have to do some dangerous things to try to save both their worlds. Is it worth going to the theater to find out what else happens? Project Hail Mary is the fifth movie directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It’s written by Drew Goddard and based on the Andy Weir novel. It’s the second movie adapted from a Weir novel, and the second adapted by Goddard, after The Martian. It stars Ryan Gosling as a high school science teacher who’s tasked with … going to space basically alone and saving the world. Project Hail Mary is the No. 1 movie in the world. Its opening last weekend was the biggest of the year so far, and its domestic opening was the second-biggest of Gosling’s career (after Barbie) and the second-biggest ever for a non-franchise movie (after Oppenheimer). And: Saturday Night Live UK is an official international adaptation of regular, old SNL stateside. It, too, premiered last weekend with an episode hosted by (noted non-Brit) Tina Fey. Ground control to Script Apart listeners – today on the show, we're blasting off into the cosmos with three formidable sci-fi storytelling talents. Phil Lord and Chris Miller are the writer-director-producer pair responsible for films like Into The Spider-Verse, Across The Spider-Verse, 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, The Lego Movie and Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. Screenwriter Drew Godard, meanwhile, you may know from movies like Cloverfield, Cabin In The Woods, World War Z and Bad Times At The El Royale, which he also directed. Project Hail Mary is their new film, directed by Lord & Miller and written by Drew, and it's one of the most entertaining and defiantly hopeful spectacles of the year so far – a tale of empathy and communication as a weapon against adversity, and another story of an astronaut adrift among the stars, adapted from an author who's made that kinda his specialty. In 2015, Drew worked with Ridley Scott on The Martian – an adaptation of a novel by Andy Weir. A decade later, Drew teamed with Andy again on a film that, from the outside, might look like The Martian Part II. Project Hail Mary, though, is in fact a brilliant inversion of Andy's breakthrough book, and of other similar-sounding space adventure yarns. It stars Ryan Gosling as junior high teacher Ryland Grace – a man who wakes up one day alone on a space shuttle with amnesia, and no recollection of what put him there. Soon he discovers himself to be at the centre of a mission to heal our solar system's dying sun. This dude in a nice cardigan is somehow humanity's last shot at salvation.“So, a bit like Sunshine by Danny Boyle?” I hear you ask. Not really! Despite the cosmic high-stakes involved in that premise, Project Hail Mary has a hilarious lightness of touch about it, and a message about friendship at its core that's remarkable. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, first with Drew, then handing over to Phil and Chris, you'll hear exactly how the filmmakers arrived at that tone. Collectively, we break down every twist and turn in Project Hail Mary – including the inspirations behind Rocky, a character that let me be very clear, I would die for. Drew also gives me a couple of insights into what he's cooking up with The Matrix 5, following the announcement a while back that he's going to be helming the next instalment in that saga. We consider that possibility as we run through the highs and lows, both intentional and unintentional, of a movie that, if nothing else, offers a lot to talk about. This week on PREVIOUSLY ON…, Jason and Joelle break down the trailers for Scary Movie, which sees the OG cast returning to parody the latest horror hits, and the highly anticipated DCU series Lanterns, coming to HBO. They also cover the news that A24 is opening a Vegas wedding chapel for one day to promote the upcoming film The Drama, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, and discuss whether the reveal that Zendaya and Tom Holland were recently married was just a coincidence or some brilliant guerrilla marketing. Next, they discuss the Actor Awards (formerly the Screen Actors Guild Awards), including who the biggest winners and losers of the night were and whether this award show might be doing it better than the rest. They then cover the story of actor Jared Harris, of The Crown and Chernobyl fame, taking legal action after his likeness was used in AI-generated movie trailers. They wrap up with some rapid-fire headlines, including HBO Max and Paramount+ being merged into one streaming platform, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller stating that Project Hail Mary contains zero green-screen shots, and Marvel Rivals announcing that the game will feature several MCU tie-ins in the months leading up to Avengers: Doomsday. Plus, we get a special report from Rosie on Mothra’s 65th Anniversary, LIVE from the Godzilla Hotel in Shinjuku, Tokyo!
