Hinduism and Tribal Religions (Springer, 2021) offers an overview of Hinduism as found in India and the diaspora. Exploring Hinduism in India in dynamic interaction, rather than in isolation, the volume discusses the relation of Hinduism with other religions of Indian origin and with religions which did not originate in India but have been a major feature of its religious landscape. This volume fills the need felt by Hindus both in India and the diaspora for more knowledge about modern-day Hinduism, Hindu history and traditions. It takes into account three main aspects of Hinduism: that the active pan-Indian and diasporic language of the Hindus is English; that modern Hindus need a rational rather than a devotional or traditional exposition of the religion; and that they need information about and arguments to address the stereotypes which characterize the presentation of Hinduism in academia and the media, especially in the West. Philosophical concepts are influential in the theories and methods to study the world religions. Even though the disciplines of anthropology and religious studies now encompass communities and cultures across the world, the theories and methods used to study world religions and cultures continue to be rooted in Western philosophies. In Indic philosophical systems, such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism, one of the common views on reality is that the world both within one self and outside is a flow with nothing permanent, both the observer and the observed undergoing constant transformation. Dr. Jeffery D. Long is the Carl W. Zeigler Professor of Religion, Philosophy, and Asian Studies at Elizabethtown College, in central Pennsylvania. He has taught there since receiving his doctoral degree from the University of Chicago Divinity School in the year 2000. He is the author of several books, including Jainism: An Introduction and Hinduism in America: A Convergence of Worlds and Discovering Indian Philosophy: An Introduction to Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist Thought, which will be released in February of next year. He has also published a wide array of articles and has spoken at a variety of venues, both national and international, including three talks at the United Nations. He received initiation into the Vedanta tradition of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda in 2005 and is a regular speaker at Vedanta Societies and Hindu temples across the US. But here's where it gets really interesting. Dr. Long, like many of us, is a lifelong fan of the Beatles and George Harrison in particular.  His book on Jainism includes a section on George Harrison and he has given talks on the influence of Vedanta in Harrison's music.  Fans of Harrison will know about the very obvious influences in Harrison's legendary solo album All Things Must Pass. But there are hints of Harrison's Hindu influences in many Beatles songs as well.  We are so excited to speak to him about so many things – Hinduism, George Harrison, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, and the Bhagavad Gita, for starters.

In our Mysticast conversation with Dr. Jeffery D. Long, Carl W. Zeigler Professor of Religion, Philosophy, & Asian Studies, School of Arts & Humanities. Elizabethtown College PA, we discuss the biggest questions looking for similarities between the Hindu and Buddhist teachings and those given to us by and through Dr George King: Master Of Yoga & Founder Of The Aetherius Society. Jeffery was keen to share that he found the teachings to have profound truths and said that he could see connections clearly between the Bhagavad Gita and the The Twelve Blessings - The Aetherius Society The Bhagavad- Gita is considered by eastern and western scholars alike to be among the greatest spiritual books the world has ever known. In a very clear and wonderful way the Supreme Lord Krishna describes the science of self-realization and the exact process by which a human being can establish their eternal relationship with God The Twelve Blessings' is a series of blessings to spiritual workers and great cosmic beings, incorporating profound wisdom – as well as some of the most beautiful prayers ever given to Earth. When you read them, and especially when you make them a part of your everyday life, they will give you a deeper, more spiritual appreciation of our living cosmos. For centuries religious dogma and materialism have limited our perception of the real awe-inspiring greatness of the Divine and the mystery of creation. ‘The Twelve Blessings' changes that. But they are not just mystic teachings. They can also be used as a way to help our world. In fact, the whole of ‘The Twelve Blessings' can be used as a powerful mystic practice to invoke and send out spiritual energy; something you can do in as little as a few minutes. When you do ‘The Twelve Blessings' as a practice, you help to change the world with spiritual energy - raising the consciousness of humanity as a whole. This raising of consciousness will enable us to correctly address the challenges that we face. - - - - Resources related to The Aetherius Society and advanced teachings - - - - - The Aetherius Society - https://www.aetherius.org/ Aetherius Radio Live - https://www.aetherius.org/podcasts/ Spiritual Freedom Show - https://www.aetherius.org/the-spiritual-freedom-show/ King Yoga FB Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/awakeningthroughkingyoga The International Mystic Knowledge Center - http://www.mysticknowledge.org/ IMKC youtube - https://www.youtube.com/c/MysticKnowledge

Jeffery D. Long spoke to me last year about religious pacifism, especially in reference to the brand-new book he co-edited (and wrote chapters for), Nonviolence in the World's Religions: A Concise Introduction (Routledge, 2022).   Now, the Carl W. Ziegler Professor of Religious Studies at Elizabethtown College talks to me about a book coming out this year: Discovering Indian Philosophy: An Introduction to Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist Thought (Bloomsbury, coming 2023). It's a sneak peek! And I am incredibly interested in the topic. I have delved into Buddhism, which had its start in India way back when. And I've been fascinated by the study of Americans who brought Eastern philosophy and religion back with them in the back half of the 20th century.  Long, however, a convert to Hinduism, wanted to do his part of help place Indian philosophy not only in its place in world religion, but in the Philosophy Department proper.  What can we learn about what we think and how we think from the great traditions of the Indian subcontinent without silo-ing those ideas just in religion?  I was hungry to learn, and Long thrilled me with answers to questions I didn't even know I had ...  Photo by Navneet Shanu

Jainism, birthed out of the rich religions of India, asks practitioners to be as careful as they can in not hurting a single thing. They step carefully on the ground and wear masks to avoid inhaling and accidentally killing the little things we thoughtlessly murder. Now, that, but writ large: Gandhi, and the nonviolent movement that sought Indian independence from British rule.  Well, we don't talk about any of that, because as a fellow religious convert, I much more wanted to discuss Jeffery D. Long's switch from small-town Missouri Catholicism to Hinduism over the decades. It turns out, the tale started when he was very young, but then culminated when he was much older: a seeking that finally a home in a newly embraced religion, but also an over-arching belief in the ability of man and man's systems to change to embrace more peace, less war and violence.  Dive a lot into Long the main, some into his newly co-edited (and contributed) book, Nonviolence in the World's Religions: A Concise Introduction (Routledge, 2022), and some more into his wanting to highlight the peace at the heart of some of the world's religions at a time when the world is increasingly critical of the violence that bubbles up from religion's adherents.  And, bonus, listeners! Long recommended books at the end of our recording session for beginners curious about Hinduism or other strands of Eastern religion he's explored through the years. This is not an exhaustive list. Email him and I bet he'll pony up with one.  A Survey of Hinduism, 3rd edition by Klaus K. Klostermaier (from SUNY Press, from Half Price Books online)    Vedanta: A Simple Introduction by Pravrajika Vrajaprana (from Vedanta Press)  Jainism: An Introduction by Jeffery D. Long (from I.B. Tauris)   Buddhism: A Very Short Introduction by Michael Carrithers (one of a long, lovely series on everything from Oxford)    What the Buddha Taught by Walpola Rahula (a marvelous one I read a year or so ago, from Grove Press in its most recent edition, with many older editions everywhere in the used-book market)   What the Buddha Thought by Richard Gombrich (from Equinox Publishing)  Empty, Empty. Happy, Happy. by Tyler Lewke (Redwood Publishing, 2019, on Amazon)  Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda (from the Self-Realization Fellowship, whose wide publishing has made this book a mainstay in used bookstores for decades)  Editor's note: This interview is the second of a three-part series on Nation-Building, War and, right here, Peace. (Also in the works is a series on Birth, Adolescence and Old Age.)

Jainism evokes images of monks wearing face-masks to protect insects and mico-organisms from being inhaled. Or of Jains sweeping the ground in front of them to ensure that living creatures are not inadvertently crushed: a practice of non-violence so radical as to defy easy comprehension. Yet for all its apparent exoticism, Jainism is still little understood in the West. What is this mysterious philosophy which originated in the 6th century BCE, whose absolute requirement is vegetarianism, and which now commands a following of four million adherents both in its native India and diaspora communities across the globe?  In Jainism: An Introduction (I. B. Tauris, 2009), Long makes an ancient tradition fully intelligible to the modern reader. Plunging back more than two and a half millennia, to the plains of northern India and the life of a prince who - much like the Buddha - gave up a life of luxury to pursue enlightenment, Long traces the history of the Jain community from founding sage Mahavira to the present day. He explores asceticism, worship, the life of the Jain layperson, relations between Jainism and other Indic traditions, the Jain philosophy of relativity, and the implications of Jain ideals for the contemporary world. The book presents Jainism in a way that is authentic and engaging to specialists and non-specialists alike. Dr. Pankaj Jain is a Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies at FLAME University, where he is heading the Indic Studies Initiative in the FLAME School of Liberal Education. Our first 3 episodes have traced the evolution of Christological hermeneutics over the last 2,000 years. The 3 world views of Traditional, Modern and Postmodern have all contributed to thousands of denominated, separated groups who share one common theme. When Theology has encountered Christology it resulted in a world religion.  But those who write and research in the field of Integral Consciousness point to the appearance of a new level or stage of hermeneutics. An integral approach to Theology and the role of Christology within it results in an outcome beyond religion. The Narrative itself becomes the pointing finger toward that which is Ultimate.  We have seen in the last episode that attachment to form is common to all 3 previous worldviews with regard to identity. But what about the Biblical Narrative as a form? How should we understand the role and function of narratives in general? What about other narratives? And let’s recall the statement of Jerry Martin, “Is TWW a form of comparative theology? Yes, if it is understood as a Comparative Theology Without Walls. But it is an alternative to those forms of comparative theology that are essentially confessional, seeking to enhance one’s theology by studying another tradition.” Note how the concern of any comparative theology revolves around its forms. We will look at 2 specific chapters in the TWW book for this discussion. First will be Paul Knitter, author of “Without Buddha I Could Not Be a Christian.” Secondly we’ll consider the work of Jeffery D. Long on “A Hinduism Without Walls? Exploring The Concept of The Avatar Interreligiously.” To view this Zoom video recording click HERE #TheologyWithoutWalls #Theology #Spirituality #SpiritualButnotReligious #PostReligion #PostReligious #Integral #IntegralTheology #Bible #Buddhism #Hinduism #Transnarrative #Christology #Christianity #SpiralDynamics
