Indic Studies with Professor Pankaj Jain, Ph.D.

Dr. BR Ambedkar is rightly remembered for his role in creating the Indian Constitution and for his outspoken anti-caste views. Less known is how many of his views on hot-button political issues in India today align far more with those of so-called Hindu nationalists than his contemporary supporters would have you believe. In this episode, we speak with Dr Pankaj Jain about the unknown Ambedkar.

Visual Anthropology of Indian Films: Religious Communities and Cultural Traditions in Bollywood and Beyond (Routledge, 2024) provides a unique insider's look at the world's largest film industry, now globally known as ‘Bollywood' and challenges existing notions about Indian films. Indian films have been a worldwide phenomenon for decades. Chapters in this edited volume take a fresh view of various hidden gems by maestros such as Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy, V. Shantaram, Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Shakti Samant, Rishikesh Mukherjee, and others. Other chapters provide a pioneering review and analysis of the portrayal of Indian religious communities such as Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and Parsis. The themes covered include unique Indian feminism and male chauvinism, environment and climate issues, international locations and diaspora tourism, religious harmony and conflict, the India-Pakistan relationship, asceticism, and renunciation in Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. Unlike many recent studies of Indian films, these chapters do not distinguish between popular and serious cinema. Many chapters focus on Hindi films, but others bring insights from films made in other parts of India and its neighbouring countries. Philosophical concepts are influential in the theories and methods to study the world religions. Even though the disciplines of anthropology and religious studies now encompass communities and cultures across the world, the theories and methods used to study world religions and cultures continue to be rooted in Western philosophies. In Indic philosophical systems, such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism, one of the common views on reality is that the world both within one self and outside is a flow with nothing permanent, both the observer and the observed undergoing constant transformation. Pankaj Jain and Jeffery D. Long's book Indian and Western Philosophical Concepts in Religion (Rowman and Littlefield, 2023) is based on such innovative ideas coming from different Indic philosophies and how they can enrich the theory and methods in religious studies. Grey Mirror: MIT Media Lab’s Digital Currency Initiative on Technology, Society, and Ethics

In this episode Pankaj Jain, founder and managing partner of Saka Ventures, talks about tech in India that is focussed on targeting large global markets. Pankaj has 25 years of international experience that integrates technology, finance, entrepreneurship, venture capital and blockchain. He views business models and startups through a cross-cultural lens coupled with an understanding of global markets. Jain has been an active angel investor as well as an advisor to venture capital funds, startups, governments and foundations. We talk about tech in India, Pankaj's engagement for more than two decades in hedge funds, startups, and venture capital across India, what is happening in India and what will be happening in the future. We dive deep into the Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai markets as well as the UPI “Uniform Payment Interface” and how it enables new kinds of financial tech in India. Additionally we compare India to China and converse about markets that have an eye on India and how building tech products in India then leads to other markets such as Africa, Middle East and Southeast Asia instead of America first. Professor Pankaj Jain shares examples from key Dharmic and Yogic texts and contexts from which Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists continue to derive their inspiration. Evidently, in Yogic and Dharmic contexts, religion, ethics, and environmentalism are intertwined with each other instead of distinctly evolved theories. About the Theme: In the West, the current paradigm of wishing to establish ecological balance via education, public policy, advocacy, and law enforcement has a serious deficit, i.e., how to do it. The Indic way is to provide the HOWTOs to accomplish an environment-friendly society. Yoga practice can go a long way for the benefit of ecology. Thus, a paradigm shift is needed from a top-down enforcement approach to bottom-up individual practice where Yoga can facilitate the praxis necessary for establishing ecological balance. About the Author: Pankaj Jain is a Philosophy, Religious Studies, Film Studies, Sustainability, and Diaspora Studies, Professor. He has authored three books and has co-edited the Hinduism Section of the Encyclopedia of Indian Religions. His articles have appeared in multiple academic journals and popular websites. Academic Works: Dharma and Ecology of Hindu Communities: Sustenance and Sustainability Science and Socio-Religious Revolution in India: Moving the Mountains Dharma in America: A Short History of Hindu-Jain Diaspora Edited volume: Encyclopedia of Indian Religions- Hinduism and Tribal Religions. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pankaj-jain/support

Scholars have long noticed a discrepancy in how non-Western and Western peoples conceptualize the scientific and religious worlds. Non-Western traditions and communities, such as India, are better positioned to provide an alternative to the Western dualistic thinking of separating science and religion. Dr. Anil Joshi founded the Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation Organization (HESCO) in the 1970s as a new movement looking at the economic and development needs of rural villages in the Indian Himalayas and encouraging them to use local resources in order to open up new avenues to self-reliance. Pankaj Jain's book Science and Socio-Religious Revolution in India (Routledge, 2018) argues that the concept of dharma, the law that supports the regulatory order of the universe in Indian culture, can be applied as an overarching term for HESCO's socio-economic work. This book presents the social-environmental work in contemporary India by Dr. Anil Joshi in the Himalayas and by Baba Seechewal in Punjab, combining the ideas of traditional and scientific ecological knowledge systems. Based on these two examples, the book presents the holistic model transcending the dichotomies of nature vs. culture and science vs. religion, especially as practiced and utilized in non-Western societies such as India.
