A further examination of the story of Laura Hall, who was convicted and sent to prison for the crime of dismembering the body of Jennifer Cave in 2005. Laura admitted to going to the apartment of her boyfriend Colton Pitonyak, at his request, and was confronted with the body of Cave. Put on trial for this crime, and for helping Pitonyak escape, she was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison. However, after 17 months in jail, Laura Hall was released. Her conviction was upheld and she was out on bond while prosecutors fought to put her back in jail. Pitonyak's new lawyer said that they had new evidence and that Hall was also responsible for the murder, which she denies. “48 Hours" correspondent Maureen Maher reports. Breanna Wood is last seen at a convenience mart, after texting her mother she was on her way home. When she doesn't show, her mother, Fallon, files a missing person report. Months later, Breanna Wood's dismembered body is found inside a two-foot square box. Seven people are charged in the case. Not all of those charged have yet to see a jury, but as the cases are being prepped Nueces County First Asst. District Attorney, Angelica Hernandez, came to Fallon Wood for help sorting through pre-trial evidence in the case against the man accused of actually murdering Breanna. Wood was put into a room with boxes of evidence related to her daughter's case, including crime scene photos. For three days, Wood sat on the floor sorting all the interviews, photos, and more. Some videos Wood was allowed to take home. The family's access to the evidence creates many problems. Claims of tampering could be levied and could lead to Fallon Wood being disqualified as a witness in her daughter's murder. Zapraszam do wysłuchania szczegółów historii Jennifer Cave
We are still on a Bachelor break, after covering Season 26 of The Bachelor. But, we are still connecting true crime stories to the whole of Bachelor Nation. Clayton's season was literally a copy / paste season. Bachelor Nation made several connections to Clayton and Colton Underwood's season. In addition, their names are so similar that Danielle, along with most of Bachelor Nation, continued to confuse them. So this week Danielle is telling you about a murderer named Colton. Jennifer Cave was a beautiful young woman, trying to figure out living on her own and unfortunately, struggling with addiction. Her addiction led her to meeting Colton, who on the outside looking in, seemed to be a “good guy”, but instead, had a very dark side. Through the twists and turns in Jennifer's life, she kept coming into contact with Colton, and one night would be the last… (Story Starts at:15:59 ) CONTENT WARNING: Substance Abuse You can always connect with us at: linktr.ee/CrimeandRoses. She was able to find out that Jennifer had gone out with a friend of hers the night before named Colton Pitonyak, but when Sharon spoke to Colton he told her he didn't know where Jennifer was. When she still hadn't been found by the next day, Sharon and her boyfriend, Jim Sedwick, decided to make the drive to Austin. Jennifer's car had been found in the parking lot of Colton's apartment, and Sharon knew that behind his door lay the key to Jennifer's whereabouts. Welcome back, Creeps and Freaks! This week we have a very special guest! Snaps for Gabby! She tells us all about the truly saddening murder of Jennifer Cave. Listen along and give some major props to Gabby for her first ever podcast appearance!
It's usually a given that murder has to have a motive, even if only barely. To commit such a crime, there had to have been a reason. Sometimes, there is no reason, and all we're left with is the shock and pain of having someone taken from us for truly, no reason at all. Today we're going to take a brief look at a gruesome and absolutely pointless murder of a young woman who only wanted to have a night out to celebrate her new job with her friends. For many of my early listeners, this story may be familiar, and it may have happened right in your neighborhood. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chris-chapa3/message

Jennifer Cave and Colton Pitonyak had their addiction to drugs in common, but they were otherwise two very different people. Jennifer was known as a caring person who tried to help everyone she met. Pitonyak was a drug dealer with a growing propensity for violence. In August of 2005, when Jennifer didn’t show up for her new job working for a law firm in Austin, Texas, her employer called Jennifer’s mother Sharon back in Corpus Christi. Concerned, Sharon called several of Jennifer’s friends. She even called Pitonyak, who lied to her and claimed he had not seen Jennifer. The next day, Sharon and her fiancé, Jim, drove to Austin to look for Jennifer. The crime scene they found in Pitonyak’s apartment was shockingly gruesome.Join us at the quiet end for When Darkness Fell. Colton Pitonyak was a former rich kid who was used to getting everything he wanted. Jennifer considered herself his friend, but he wanted more from her. He took Jennifer out for dinner to celebrate her new job on August 16th, but something very dark occurred back at his place. There has never been a clear motive for what happened to Jennifer that night, but it soon became clear to investigators that Pitonyak had had a co-conspirator after the fact. Once arrested, Pitonyak and his accomplice turned on each other at trial, further deepening the mystery of motive and blame.

When we left you at the end of Part 1, Colton “the Goshfather” Pitonyak was awaiting sentencing on a drug possession charge, partying like his plane was going down, and trying to coax Jennifer Cave back into his life. Colton's new hookup buddy/ego fluffer, Laura Hall, was none too pleased about that. But Colton had never managed to squelch his obsession with Jennifer. And as he descended further and further into a life of speed addiction and violent fantasies, and Jennifer tried harder and harder to save him, they both drew closer to the point of no return. One of the famous lines from the movie Fight Club's tortured protagonist is “I felt like destroying something beautiful.” Most of us would never want to do such a thing. We see something beautiful and we want to draw closer to it, encourage it to grow, remember it forever. But for a certain kind of damaged soul—jealous, angry, resentful—it goes another way. They're drawn to beauty, sure, but in the way a moth is drawn to a flame. When they get too close, they can't handle it. It burns them. Makes them painfully aware of their own insecurities. They want to be close to it, but they resent it, too. And if they can't possess the beautiful thing, they need to see it broken. It's the only thing that will put out that raging fire inside them.
