The 2023 Dodge Hornet is the newest addition to the giant compact sport-utility segment. And it brings along the Dodge brand muscularity, an image that is entirely lacking in that starkly conventional segment. The Hornet also marks a major departure for the Dodge brand, which like all Stellantis brands, has an uncertain future as the parent company considers consolidation. But if the Hornet points the way for Dodge, the brand should have a bright future. The two variants — the plug-in hybrid 2024 Dodge Hornet R/T and the turbocharged 2023 Dodge Hornet GT — are shining proof that crossovers don't have to be mundane. Host Jack Nerad had the rare chance to drive both Hornet models at a recent event in and around Asheville, North Carolina, and he'll have a full report. With enticing doses of horsepower and a “Powershot” feature that releases 30 extra horsepower for occasional use, the Italian-built Dodge Hornet will certainly raise some eyebrows … and may raise Cain. The subject of our other road test is equally interesting but for far different reasons. The 2023 Toyota Crown supplants the long-in-the-tooth Toyota Avalon as the brand's full-size sedan. And while the Crown channels Buick sedans in some important ways, it also brings a distinct Toyota spin to a segment that is in need of as much spin as it can get. Guest Host Matt DeLorenzo tested the Toyota Crown and will share his impressions in this episode. This week's special guest is Greg Kitzens, General Manager of Product and Consumer Marketing for Lexus. He joined Host Jack Nerad to discuss the all-new 2023 Lexus RZ 450E, the brand's first battery-electric vehicle. And he had interesting thoughts on how the Japanese luxury brand can compete with the Tesla Motors juggernaut. In the news, the European Union has just announced a plan that would allow the use of so-called e-fuels in combustion engines after 2035, its previous deadline to go all-electric. This could be a giant game-changer in the auto industry, and we'll have our thoughts coming up. Also in the news this week, a just-published article by Reuters says that many electric vehicles offer no way to repair even slightly damaged battery packs after accidents. This forces insurance companies to write off cars with few miles, which could lead to mammoth insurance rate hikes. We'll let you know which automaker is most responsible for this problem coming up a little later. All this and much more are coming up in this episode of America on the Road on the SportsMap Radio Network.

Volkswagen's Passat was one of its most important nameplates and a staple of the Volkswagen portfolio. Entering the United States for the 1974 model year, the Passat has filled the driveways of countless folks over its nearly 50-year span in the ‘States. Though, Volkswagen announced that the Passat was seeing the end of the line after the 2022 model year, and even sent it away with a special final edition. Powering the current generation Passat is a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that makes 174 hp and 206 lb-ft of torque. Slotted above the even more beloved Jetta, the Passat was in the middle of VW's sedan lineup, which is a spot in the market that is continually shrinking. Toyota's Avalon is a similar story. While its run is shorter and was introduced fewer than 30 years ago, the Avalon quickly became a staple of Toyota's sedan lineup. With five generations under its belt, it was probably hard for folks to see Toyota also discontinue the nameplate in the United States. Available with either a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 that makes 301 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque or a 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain that makes 205 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. Both of these powertrains are surrounded by the same mid-size sheet metal. On this episode of the Quick Spin bonus show Talkin' Cars With the Boss, host Wesley Wren chats with Autoweek's Editor in Chief Natalie Neff about her time with both the 2021 Volkswagen Passat and 2021 Toyota Avalon Hybrid. The pair discuss how both cars drive, feel and look while also tackling the greater question of declining space for sedans in the new car marketplace.

True dual-use vehicles, their interiors make them day-to-day livable despite their incredible performance. The 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat gives new meaning to the three-row SUV. In road tests this week, co-host Chris Teague puts an all-wheel-drive 2021 Toyota Avalon to work over the icy roads of Maine. Scarlett of Scarlett Law Group explains how he secured justice for a 21-year-old pre-med student who suffered a traumatic brain injury following a car crash involving two tractor-trailers on California's State Route 152 near Pacheco Pass. Drew Bianchi, a promising medical student, was a passenger in his friend's Toyota Avalon when the vehicle was struck by a truck that crossed the center line, causing a head-on collision with a Gordon Trucking 18-wheeler. The truck driver who caused the collision was operating his vehicle on only three hours of sleep; the second truck driver was talking on his cell phone at the time of impact. Drew sustained major injuries and was rendered a quadriplegic, requiring around-the-clock care. After six weeks of trial, a San Jose, California jury returned a $49,123,375.87 verdict, assigning 35% of the fault to Gordon Trucking, 60% to the other tractor-trailer driver and 5% to the State of California. This case secured the highest non-punitive verdict in California for a traumatic brain injury.   Click Here to Read/Download the Complete Trial Documents   Guest Bio: Randall H. Scarlett Randall H. Revolution 2.0
Profits Bad, Debt Good–Really? (EP.154)

Revolution 2.0

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 6, 2019 8:41

Introduction Our--emphasis on our--national debt is skyrocketing. We are currently at $22 trillion, adding about $1 trillion a year. This is a bipartisan attack on our economic infrastructure. Profits are increasingly under attack, with at least two of the leading Democratic presidential contenders claiming that healthcare industry profits “rip billions from healthcare”, effectively stealing money from the people who need it the most. Put these two facts together, and this underlying economic philosophy is “Profits are bad, debt is good. That is the subject of today’s 10-minute blog/podcast. Continuing We live in a unique and exceptional nation; part of the equally unique and exceptional role we all play in our country is to understand how American healthcare should work, and to hold our politicians to that strategy.  My wife, Marcia, and I recently went car shopping. She had been wanting a Toyota Avalon for a few years now, and as her much used 2008 Subaru Outback needed more and more repairs, it seemed like a good time. After a few test drives and a few days of back-and-forth negotiating, we struck what appeared to be a good deal. When we got the right balance of trade-in value and new car price, we paid up and left with the car. And Marcia is still chirping.  At no point did we concern ourselves with what kind of profits Toyota was making, or even how the dealer fared. We cared about the value we were receiving for the money we were spending. And we do want both the manufacturer and the dealer to make a profit and stay in business. In part to be around to service Marcia and her new car, and in part to continue to provide jobs, competition in the vehicle marketplace, and add their pieces to the economy.  Why would it be any different with healthcare? Why is making a profit a bad thing? Don’t we want hospitals, physician’s offices, Urgent Care and the local doc-in-the-box to be financially healthy so they can be around to provide continuing care? Or is it that we think that the government can run healthcare so efficiently that healthcare will cost less with the government running it than with private business running it? If that is the argument, where is the evidence? The VA? The Post Office?  If you scratch at the “profit-is-bad therefore we should insist that Medicare For All (MFA) be the one and only healthcare plan allowed” argument, making employer-based plans illegal, you get two things under your fingernails: Medicare For All needs the relatively healthy workers and their families who are currently being covered under their employers so that MFA won’t be an even bigger financial disaster than it would be without them. Obamacare also needed the younger and healthier, hence the need to fine them if they did not choose to have coverage. The MFA people want government to run just about everything.  I was on private health insurance, save for my time in the Army, until a few years ago when I went on Medicare. This is highly anecdotal, but I will tie my experience to the larger picture in a moment. Over my years on Medicare, I have:  Seen certain of my physicians limiting Medicare patients to a few hours, one or two days a week.  Seen that some prospective healthcare providers won’t even take my information until they have a “Medicare patient opening.” Been told that my access to drugs is limited because I am on Medicare.  Gone through a decline in the experience level of my providers. Where I once would routinely consult with a physician if I had an issue, I was reduced to seeing physician's assistants and nurse practitioners. Now I am screened by medical assistants before I am allowed to consult with a PA or NP. Seen the Medicare-driven paperwork rise dramatically. Side Note: I was in the workforce for 60 years; my Medicare and Social Security are fully paid for. In fact, more than paid for. I expect more for my hard work.

Toyotas are bland, right? That's the wrap. And for a long time it's been hard to disagree, but the new Toyota Avalon shows that this company really can turn out compelling cars. So, we asked the Chief Engineer of the Avalon, Randy Stephens, to park one in our studio while we talked to him about this, the first Toyota passenger car to be designed, engineered and manufactured in the U.S. In addition, you know that we'll get into the biggest news of the week including the continued "brain drain" at GM. John McElroy will also have some driving impressions to share of the Cadillac XTS. Joining John in studio is his After Hours cohort Peter De Lorenzo, the Autoextremist!
