In the span of three months in 1976, three young East Austin women vanished. With seemingly no clues left behind, the Austin Police were baffled, however, it's unclear if they were investigating the first two cases from the get-go, those of Brenda Jean Moore and Jennifer Joyce Barton. They certainly were not utilizing the media – a vital tool in any missing persons case; it took a year for Jennifer to get a highly sensationalized article about her disappearance and Brenda never once made the newspaper. Police went to the media for Debra Kay Stewart's missing person's case about a week after she disappeared, perhaps too late to be effective. If you have any information about the disappearances of Brenda Jean Moore, Jennifer Joyce Barton, or Debra Kay Stewart, please contact the Texas Department of Public Safety's Missing Persons Clearinghouse at (800) 346-3243 or the Austin Police Department at (512) 974-5250.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. In May of 1983, 35-year-old Esther Broberg was dropped off by her husband at an after hours drinking joint in East Austin, Texas. There, she hung out with her close friend and some others. Just as the sun threatened to rise, the group parted ways. But Esther never made it home. Instead, just a few hours later, passersby at EH Givens Park, not far from where she'd been, discovered Esther Broberg's body. The scene was shocking; the violence acted out on the mother of two was unfathomable. Unforgivable. The Austin Police quickly developed suspects in the case, and a series of confessions, but there could be no trial. Even after one of the suspect's DNA matched evidence found on Esther's body a couple decades later, the same roadblocks remained. If you have any information about the abduction, rape, and murder of Esther Gevara Broberg, please call the Austin Police Department Homicide Tip line at 512-477-3588. Austin, Texas faces a critical police staffing shortage, leaving sectors of the city dangerously under-policed. The Austin Police Association President, Michael Bullock, highlighted a recent Saturday when an entire East Austin sector had no patrol officers available – a stark decline from the usual 10-14 officers. This shortage is attributed to a growing population and stagnant police numbers: Austin's population increased by over 250,000 since 2006, but police staffing remains nearly unchanged. The department is approximately 500 officers short, despite ongoing recruitment efforts, including two cadet classes. Bullock emphasizes the urgent need for a long-term contract with the city to aid in recruitment and retention. The situation reflects a broader trend of police shortages across the U.S., especially in cities that have faced criticism of law enforcement practices. This alarming scenario poses significant public safety challenges, with officers stretched thin, covering emergencies without the capacity for proactive community policing. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

When Debra Wilt married Robert Reiding in November of 1978, they immediately moved to Austin, Texas from Choteau, Montana to escape the brutal Winter. Robert had a relative that could give him work, and although it left much to be desired money wise, Debra found work at a restaurant near their apartment. But just shy of two months into settling in the Texas Capitol City, the newlywed 18-year-old was slain in the couple's home. But it wasn't a homicide the cops in Austin were accustomed to. It was, however, one they'd at least become somewhat familiar with over the course of the 1970s as the city underwent a major growth spurt – something Austin Police Homicide Lt. Nolan Meinardus called, “faceless crime.” Debra's case went cold fast, and when it heated up decades later, it appeared the warm and friendly young woman might finally see justice. If you have any information about the murder of Debra Sue Wilt Reiding in January of 1979, please call the Austin Police homicide tip line at (512) 477-3588, the Homicide Unit at (512) 974-5210, or Capital Area Crime Stoppers at (512) 472-8477Please consider donating to the go fund me for Leon Laureles. In February 1975, Austin was rocked with a savage and senseless crime that disturbed even the most experienced homicide detectives when 21-year-old Phyllis Butto was stabbed to death in her home. The murder baffled police. The following June, when a markedly similar crime took place, Austin Homicide Investigators scrambled to find clues. 25-year-old Martha Read was also riddled with stab wounds. Though a couple promising leads came their way, the cops couldn't find anything that made sense or stuck. Law enforcement in Texas's Capital City, anyway, was facing a new challenge that worsened as Austin grew: something they called “faceless crime.”If you have any information about the 1975 murders of Phyllis Butto or Martha Read, please call the Austin Police homicide tip line at (512) 477-3588, the Homicide Unit at (512) 974-5210, or Capital Area Crime Stoppers at (512) 472-8477Please consider donating to the go fund me for Leon Laureles. Armstrong's attorneys are in essence accusing the Austin Police of violating the accused killer's Constitutional Rights. Developments in the Uvalde school massacre: Conflicting and still-unclear reporting seems to show that school security and responding law enforcement barricaded the shooter inside a fourth grade classroom for as long as 40 minutes, during which most of the killings took place. The shooter is believed to have bought his two AR platform guns just after his 18th birthday and just days prior to the shooting. Governor Greg Abbott offers no specific solutions, saying new gun restrictions are "not a real solution" and that the assault that killed 19 children and two adults "could have been worse". "Red Flag" laws are being mulled as a potential way to curb access to guns by criminals or people experiencing mental issues. In addition to crowdfunding and blood donations, legal services are needed by the families of the victims - attorneys are implored to volunteer.
