In part 2 of our conversation with Jesse Ortiz we spend nearly an hour talking about how the superlight shafts and a new set of light weight grips can give the average golfer more yardage than a new club head. Fred also wants to know about the life span of wedges, what to look for on a older wedge, and urban myths about wedges, Dave Pelz thoughts and impact on Jesse designs at Bobby Jones golf, and the global and long term impact that Jesse's Tri-Metal Fairway woods design. What about hybrids and fairway woods? How often should those be replaced? You'll be happy to hear his response and lesson. 900: Once again we celebrate a podcast milestone by learning more about host Fred Greene, this time through the comments and insights from his wife, Joanne. Joanne has just written and published her first book called “By Accident: A Memoir of Letting Go” which is available in paperback, e-book, and audiobook from everywhere you get your books. You can also learn more at https://joanne-greene.com. The book recounts how she gracefully made it through the trauma of being hit by a car as a pedestrian, beating cancer, losing her mother, sister, and brother in a short span of time, and getting caught in a hurricane. The pre-release reviews and blurbs have all been wildly positive and we know that you'll enjoy, and probably learn a lot, from her story…which some readers have said is a love letter to Fred. Jesse comes in and has the boys diving deep into the world of curiosity. What is the meaning of life? Are we being monitored? Is this a simulation? Giants once roamed the planet? Are billionaires the best chance for the human race? So many questions are asked and we shed light on those shadows.
In 2009, The President’s Cup was held at Harding Park in San Francisco. The next day, Golf Smarter listeners drove North across the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County (home of podcast host Fred Greene) to play 18 holes at Peacock Gap Golf Course. After our round, we gathered for dinner and a live conversation between listeners and our special guest, Jesse Ortiz of Bobby Jones Golf. This was just around the same time the USGA made their ruling on wedge grooves that was the first step to controversial bifurcation (different rules for the Tour Pros and amateurs). Next week, tune in to hear Fred’s recordings from the sounds of play at that President’s Cup event in San Francisco. This episode was #200 of Golf Smarter from October 2009. We don’t replay every Golf Smarter episode for Golf Smarter Mulligans because, in this case, the previous two episodes were discussing technology and websites that are no longer relevant or available.

On this edition of Next on the Tee I'm joined by PGA Tour Rules Official Stephen Cox, 8 Time Women's Canadian Long Drive Champion Lisa "Longball" Vlooswyk, and World Renowned Golf Club Designer Jesse Ortiz. Stephen Cox shared his thoughts on the rules changes set to go into play in January and the difficulty they have calling a violation on players for rules they know will change in just a few months. He also talked about their responsibility in setting up the courses each week, having to tell NBC they had to move a TV tower, and the impact moving The Players Championship from May to March will have on the course, especially if they have a colder than normal winter in northern Florida. Lisa "Longball" Vlooswyk talked about what it's like playing in Pro-Ams and corporate outings and the reaction men have when she booms one off the tee. She also talked about the work she's doing as the Canadian Lead for Women's Golf Day, helping to bring more women into the game. Lisa also shared some tips to help us add distance off the tee. Jesse Ortiz talked about his low profile, tri-metal fairway woods that he designed for Orlimar Golf, which took the golf industry by storm back in the late 1990's. We also discussed the great fairway woods and hybrids he designed for Bobby Jones Golf and what drove him to leave the golf industry after 50 years.

Next on the Tee with Chris Mascaro this week are: Top golf equipment designer Jesse Ortiz and Head Golf Professional at the Navy Golf Course at Seal Beach, Joe Grohman. Jesse Ortiz: Jesse started making clubs back in 1968 and was instrumental in growing the Orlimar Golf Company from a $3M into a $100M business thanks to his trimetal…low profile designed metal woods which are regarded among the most innovative ever introduced into the golf industry. He now designs clubs for the Bobby Jones brand and his drivers, fairway woods and utility clubs have received heavy acclaim in Golf Digest and have been on their Hot List starting in 2006. Jesse talked about his father Lou and how they grew the company from it's beginnings in a horse stable in San Francisco making persimmon woods that would be played by Johnny Miller, Tony Lema and Ken Venturi, into his tri metal, low profile clubs that revolutionized the game. Joe Grohman: Joe has been the Head Golf Professional at the Navy Golf Course at Seal Beach in Cypress, California for the last 11+ years. It's the golf course where Earl and Tiger Woods were members and Tiger got his start in Junior Golf. Hear Joe talking about losing to Tiger when Tiger was 13. He also talked about the racial discrimination Tiger faced from a few members of the club. The issues ran so deep that they didn't acknowledge his accomplishments and when he offered to allow them to display his US Amateur Trophy, they refused. Hear all that and more from our conversation.
