This brief episode of NBC Monitor was recorded from WCOP in Boston on March 16, 1968. The host is Gene Rayburn with a report from NBC Newsman Peter Hackes. A WCOP newscast presented by announcer Jim Dixon. I suspect the primary NBC station in Boston, WBZ, did not carry Monitor but did carry the hourly newscast from NBC. Thus WCOP aired Monitor and excerpted NBC commercials for a locally produced newscast.
Acts 4:1-31. After being threatened for speaking about Jesus, the Peter and John declared they could not help but speak of those things they had seen and heard. Returning to their friends, they prayed for boldness, and that healings, signs and wonders would take place through their hands. The place shook and they were filled the Holy Spirit and spoke out boldly. We should expect the same when we pray that prayer.
Matt Kaye reports on the need for more safety nets in the next farm bill brought to surface by inflation war, trade wars and disasters. Jennifer Smith, Development Manager for the IAA Foundation and Rodney Knittel, Assistant Director of Transportation and Infrastructure talk about the Driving Agriculture Forward Scholarships. Sue Schafer, Taylorville FFA talks about recent awards and recognition. Jim Dixon, Senior Partner with Dixon Seafood in East Peoria, talks about supply and demand challenges for the industry as we enter Lent. Recap of the Purdue CME Ag Barometer with Jim Mintert, Purdue University.

Having branched to our first novel with All Quiet on the Western Front, the Human Action Podcast begs your indulgence for one of the works of 20th century British satire. Lucky Jim is the late Kingsley Amis's seminal send-up of campus life, and it's among your host's favorite books. The book takes place in 1951, and England is trying but failing to lose its class distinctions. The protagonist Jim Dixon is singularly unfit for the academic life he's chosen, and the opportunities for Amis to skewer both the academy and English society are manifest. Allen Mendenhall of Troy University joins the show to discuss the academic pretenses and foibles punctured by Amis, along with great insights about Amis's background and political views. If you like satire, don't miss this show or this book!

Jaap Sluijter interviews James "Jim" Lee Dixon about the time he spent with J. Krishnamurti. Jim Dixon was a renowned carpet and art collector, master gardener, friend of the Foundation and prior owner/donor of the Occidental, California property which will now become a Krishnamurti Center. Jim attended many of Krishnamurti's talks and found the work of K to be the most important project to support with his estate. Jim will be missed dearly, but his passion for the teachings, and the perfume of love he left behind, will remain alive and well in Occidental, California and beyond. In remembrance of James Lee Dixon, August 26th 1943-March 23rd 2020Link to obituary Support the show (https://theimmeasurable.org/donate)

If you want peace you have to fight/prepare for it.
Stacy Schiff on her selection: In a contest between the novelist Elizabeth Jane Howard and her third husband, Kingsley Amis, I will opt for Howard every time -- with an exception made for Amis’s 1954 Lucky Jim. As laughter seems in short supply these days, I offer up this favorite Amis set-piece, arguably among the funniest pages of 20th century English literature not written by P.G. Wodehouse. I’m going to do my best to get through them with a straight face, but know that I never have before. Our hero, who is not much of a hero, is Jim Dixon, a lecturer in medieval history at a provincial British university. He is the houseguest of his department chair, who holds Dixon’s fledgling career in his hands. You needn’t worry about the minor characters who flitter by, all of them peripheral to the central drama here, which is Dixon’s climbing into bed and out of it, many hours, several surprises, and one epic hangover later. Jim Dixon is a second-generation owner of Valpak here in Central Ohio. In 1972, when his father first purchased the company, Valpak was mailed to 40,000 homes, and it’s now grown to a monthly mailed envelope to over 540,000 a month - And that’s just the mailer. They have added many more services to compliment it in the near 20 years he’s run the company and Valpak of Central Ohio has consistently been in the top 5 in production across the entire network. We also talk about how Jim got his start in both entrepreneurship and with Valpak - operating one of the "least desirable" territories in the company's network, yet still finding a way to turn that into a successful launching point for his career. We talk about navigating a business through unprecedented crises like the Great Recession of '08-'09 as well as the current Coronavirus pandemic. So much to learn from Jim in this episode... So let's get started!
A CLASSIC WESTERN HAILED AS "PERFECT!" "I reckon you don't know who you're talking to, mister. I'm Monte Lyman, and I'm not afraid of anybody, let alone a saddle tramp drifting through town. Hell, I wouldn't even waste my time looking at you, except that I can't let folks get the idea that it's healthy to tangle with a Lyman... All right, boys, go get him!" But the man Lyman was "teaching a lesson" was no fiddlefoot drifter. He may have looked like one, but he was Jim Dixon, a fast shooting, fast thinking freighter who had come to town alone to scope out its business possibilities. But Dixon's men and wagons weren't far behind and together they made a hard-fighting partnership no man or men could stand against. Lyman had given Dixon a reason to stay, and so had his meeting with Ellen Carter a woman of good breeding and exceptional strength, married to one of the slimiest tinhorn gamblers in the West. Lyman held the entire town of Cottonwood in a grip of fear and everyone paid tribute to him. But not Jim Dixon. He was the only man who dared stand up to this two-bit tyrant, and soon the trails into and out of town were ringing with gunshots and one of the deadliest battles the range had ever seen. Because the only lesson Dixon learned from the midnight beating was that he'd better waste no time lining up his six-guns on Lyman's whole sidewinder crew. Dixon's only fear was that he would have to kill Ellen's husband—and that meant he could never marry her. But Ellen and the women of Cottonwood had their own plan for dealing with the war. Either way Lyman and his men were about to be tagged "fast freight for Boothill." --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
