In this episode of The Food Professor Podcast, presented by Caddle, co-hosts Michael LeBlanc and Dr. Sylvain Charlebois open with a wide-ranging conversation on global trade tensions, the state of Canadian agriculture, and the latest policy moves shaping our food economy — before turning to the fascinating story of Stephen Mitchell, President of Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery, Ontario's only beachfront winery on the Lake Erie North Shore.Michael and Sylvain begin by unpacking the economic aftershocks of U.S. tariff wars, as soybean farmers in America face devastating losses and look for government bailouts amid shifting Chinese trade alliances. Sylvain, speaking from Purdue University in Indiana, shares first-hand insights from conversations with American farmers reeling from collapsed exports and rising equipment costs. The hosts then pivot to the EV tariff dispute between Canada, China, and the U.S., discussing whether Ottawa should drop tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles to save Canadian canola farmers — a debate intensified by security concerns and diplomatic pressures. They also explore evolving Canada–India trade relations, the potential of government-run grocery stores, and Canada's climb to #7 in the Global Agri-Food Most Influential Nations report released on World Food Day, produced in partnership with MNP.Then, Michael introduces Stephen Mitchell for a compelling look at the business of craft wine in Ontario. Stephen recounts the family story behind Sprucewood Shores — from his father's dream of returning to his farming roots to the hands-on creation of a 52-acre lakeside vineyard and winery. He describes how the business evolved from a weekend “hobby farm” into a major local producer, now recognized for its Beach Glass Series, Classic Series, and signature Warm & Cozy mulled wine, distributed through the LCBO and beyond. Stephen details how the winery balances tradition with innovation — focusing on approachability, sustainability, and product diversification — while investing to capture new market momentum as Ontario's wine industry gains visibility and political support. He also shares marketing lessons learned through social media, tastings, and direct-to-consumer engagement, underscoring that success in wine is about constant connection and storytelling.Link Global Agri-Food Most Influential Nations interactive site and report released on World Food Day, produced in partnership with MNPhttps://www.mnp.ca/en/clients/food-and-beverage-processing/momentum-is-building-canadas-rise-in-global-agri-food#reportLink to Whole Foods trends report 2026https://www.freshfruitportal.com/news/2025/10/13/whole-foods-trends-2026/. There's a difference between the elite and everyone else. Elite by definition means superior in terms of ability or qualities to the rest of a group or society. Elite is not good. It is not great. It certainly is not above average. To be elite means you're among the best. The Stars and Stripes Classic pitted America's two most elite Special Operations Forces against each other on the lacrosse field. To talk about what it means to be elite, not just in sports but in anything you do, Fran Racioppi sat down with Paul Rabil. Paul is the co-founder of the Premier Lacrosse League and undoubtedly one of the most elite lacrosse players to ever play the game. Paul is multiple time NCAA champion, a four year All American, he holds NCAA records for the most goals, assists and points. He is a multiple time Player of the Year and two time champion. He holds the most points in professional lacrosse. He is what every young lacrosse player ascribes to be. Paul is also an elite visionary and businessman. He developed the PLL out of the gaps he saw as a player. Now he's changing professional sports and how athletes are treated by owners. Check out our conversation from the endzone of Gillette Stadium to learn how anyone can be elite if you're ready to put in the work and relentlessly execute. The greatest entrepreneurial adventures take a lot of sleepless nights, a bias for action and a commitment to people. Starting a professional sports league is no different. As we gear up for the first ever Stars and Stripes Classic, Fran Racioppi is joined by Mike Rabil, the co-founder of the Premier Lacrosse League. Mike and his brother Paul, started the league with a vision to put the players at the center of the business model. From better pay, to open marketing, to benefits and equity in the league, they're redefining how professional sports embraces their athletes.Mike shared the market opportunity he and Paul saw in lacrosse and how they relentlessly pursued investment and support. He explained how giving players equity, access to marketing content and a seat at the table have created a more inclusive league. And he showed us where the sport is headed with regional affiliation. They also previewed the Stars and Stripes Classic coming September 2 to Gillette Stadium where the bonds between lacrosse and Special Operations will face off for the very first time. Performing at an elite level isn't about doing special things. It's about focusing on the basics and the fundamentals; then executing them with precision. A coach's job is to harness the energy of the players and direct it towards a common goal. As we gear up for the first ever Stars and Stripes Classic, Fran Racioppi sat down with the Head Coach of the California Redwoods and Army Reservist Nat St. Laurent. Nat's primary mission is to take a group of elite alpha lacrosse athletes all capable of big things and get them to focus on the little details; a skill he learned teaching soldiers to throw hand grenades as an instructor. He shares his Army lessons learned and how they made him a better coach.Nat also provided his perspective on the growth of the Premier Lacrosse League, how regional affiliation has enhanced the fan base, and how everything the PLL does is all out; including the 2-point shot. The United States doesn't play for second place. Not on the battlefield and certainly not on the lacrosse field. As we gear up for the first ever Stars and Stripes Classic, Fran Racioppi sat down with Head Coach of Team USA Seth Teirney. Seth is also the Director of Competition at the Premier Lacrosse League and the Head Coach of Hofstra University. He's involved in every aspect and level of lacrosse from the pros down to youth. He's a national champion as a coach and played in the National Lacrosse League as a player. Seth's attitude about lacrosse is gold medal or bust. Fran and Seth covered why it takes “feeling the sport” to compete at the highest level as both an athlete and a coach. Seth shared the launch story of the PLL from a broken down bus in Israel and how the PLL honors the Indigenous legacy of lacrosse. Seth also gives his tips to parents raising athletes and explains what it means to coach the US National Team. Plus he makes his prediction for the battle of the year, as the Green Berets take on the Navy SEALs September 2 at Gillette Stadium.Take a listen, watch, or read our conversation with one of lacrosse's greatest players and coaches, then head over to our YouTube channel or your favorite podcast platform to catch all the action from the Stars and Stripes Classic. Host Toby Hadoke keep putting off the more recent stories becasue they intimidate him: he hasn;t watched then several dozen times like he has the Classic Series. However - he has bitten the bullet and stayed awake through the whole of this Capaldi standalone instalment... one that has a number of unique features. It's generally considered a bit of a snoozefest though, so can writer and magazine editor Graham Kibble-White convince you (and Toby) that it's the story of our dreams? Phase 3 of Kibbe and Friends is officially here, and Holley is back for more fun, foolishness, and flying orange Chargers! Once again we're proud to be associated with the historic name that has made cars fast for years and years, and their innovations continue forward (as always)! As announced in this episode, Holley's Baer Brake lineup of Classic Series brakes is back and better than ever! They have front end setups as small as 11" in diameter for most every classic muscle car application to boot. Check out https://baer.com/Classic_Series.html for more info, fitment templates, and to order! ======================================== K&F Movie Summary: Two mismatched buddy cops, who work for their TLC line quoting Captain (Michael Keaton) take down a ponzie scheme the likes we haven't seen since Bernie Madoff. Will Ferrell plays an accountant - but a former college pimp. Mark Walberg might be playing himself from the Departed - but as a spoof and a ballet dancer. In the process the movie takes every stereotype of every buddy cop movie - funny or serious - and makes fun of it all, including the two most macho of detectives (Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson). But of course we're all here for the cars, and in this case the hero car that is the biggest punchline of all; a 2006 Toyota Prius. It saves the day, survives a hobo attack, and drifts through NYC all set to a killer soundtrack and subtle humor that'll make you cry. 10 Cony Island Hot Dogs! Actress Jane Badler from the cult classic series, V, joined me in The Locher Room to tell us about lending her vocals to the new single, Tears of Faith from the Australian electronic pop band, Parralox, fronted by John von Ahlen. The song is a down-tempo electronic dance arrangement about broken relationships and the hope for reconciliation. Its accompanying visual is directed by Leanne Hanley.von Ahlen plays the role of a mad professor, intent on creating his perfect soul mate. Through the power of computers, A.I. and a little bit of magic, he manages to transmute a blank slate into the perfect female creation, played by Jane. The “Tears of Faith” video is about love, loneliness, and hubris; it touches on the superficial and the spiritual.Jane appeared regularly on American television from 1976-1989. Along with V, she starred in One Life to Live (Melinda Cramer) and Fantasy Island. She also played the seductive snatcher of Alec Baldwin's baby in The Doctors (Natalie Bell) and caused a stir opposite Kim Novak in Falcon's Crest. In 2010, Jane returned to V in the re-imagining of the series.Don't miss the chance catch up with Jane Badler!

It's just Alasdair on this one, offering an hour-plus worth of solo thoughts on something he's particularly qualified to discuss: how "The Power Of The Doctor" incorporates the classic series. As Allison and Alasdair won't both be available to record together until next month, the latter jumps on the mic for what turns out to be much longer than planned (but probably not longer than he honestly should have expected) to talk about Ace, Tegan, and, well, a few other aspects of the 13th Doctor's final story. While the full discussion of the story will wait until we can get both hosts on, it turned out that Alasdair had PLENTY of (spoiler-y) things to say on this particular topic that he felt honor-bound to share with you all...
