There is a light that must never be lit... When the TARDIS runs aground in the ancient realm of Morning, the Doctor learns that a powerful force has reemerged. A lamp filled with a mythical substance known as Hooklight has been discovered - and this could mean the end of everything. A great quest begins against the forces of chaos, encompassing many new friends and foes. Without their ship and without each other, the time travellers will be tested on their journey to the Dark Forge. And not everyone will survive... **Please note: the collector's edition CD boxset is strictly limited to 1,500 copies** Recorded on: 26-28 February 2024 Recorded at: The Soundhouse Producer David Richardson said: "Writer Tim Foley has excelled even himself with this one - a sprawling, lyrical six-hour tale packed with new characters, new monsters and a whole load of surprises. "The Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa and Adric have new worlds to explore on separate journeys, as reality itself is threatened by the mysterious Hooklight. Expect something exceptionally exciting and beautiful."
This episode, we tackle a story that has been in the bottom quartile in both DWM's Mighty 200 and 50th Anniversary polls – it's Four to Doomsday! But, what will the Watchers think? This one goes probably as well as you'd expect… Join us as we discuss how this story is built like a Hartnell story, Adric turning into an incel, what the guts of the androids are made from, how Monarch is the most affable fascist dictator ever (even being reminiscent of Stephen Fry!), and Julie shows her ignorance of Greek city states (for shame!). Additionally, Diana confesses her immense disgust of the term “flesh time!” If you would like to watch along with us, you can find the this oddity available for streaming on Britbox in the USA (http://www.britbox.com) and BBC iPlayer in the UK (https://bbc.in/48GSaCB). This episode, we finally get ourselves started on the Fifth Doctor era as the Master returns (again) to taunt our new Doctor in Castrovalva… heh heh heh… Join us as we discuss just how young Peter Davison was when this was made, whether or not Adric was a little TOO excited at being tied up in the Master's web (or if it's just the harness), Tegan's need for “enormous thrust,” Bidmead's myriad weaknesses, and how the Master THINKS that he's a dom, but is clearly just a brat and all he wants is kisses (because he DESERVES them!)… this might be our most unhinged episode yet, to be honest. To the TARDIS! This week, V and Emily tackle a requested episode about a deeply controversial Doctor Who episode: Earthshock, which aired in 1982, featuring the Fifth Doctor. This episode killed off -- 40-year-old spoilers -- child companion Adric, and we're still seeing the effects of that choice in the writing of the show today. Although as far as it actually affected the Doctor or his other companions... well, that's up for debate. Compared to New Who companion deaths like those of Clara and Bill, Adric's was handled... uh. Well. They made some choices. Who was your favorite Doctor Who companion? Adric's fate, an unexpected "asteroid," and the triumphant return of the Cybermen—Earthshock is the definitive Doctor Who game-changer. From its big-budget action sequences to its brutal emotional gut punches, this Davison classic gave us one of the show's most shocking cliffhangers and its most heart-wrenching companion exit. But does all the spectacle hold up, or is this the original sin of '80s Who? Join us as we crack the last logic code, psychoanalyze the Cyber Leader's emotions (should Cybermen even have emotions?), and get lost in the cavernous plot holes of one of the show's most unforgettable adventures. Another season in the can! Season 18 done and dusted, and you know what that means… it's time for our customary season retrospective, in which we take a look back at the entirety of the season with our blend of awards, metrics, and questions from our friends on social media. These are always a lot of fun for us to do, and we really hope that you enjoy listening to this as much as we did recording it! Join us as we discuss how one of the new companions gets the best entrance ever through involuntary manslaughter, Romana's best (and worst) costumes, the Adric haters' club, Tegan's absolutely magnificent way of bursting onto the scene in Logopolis, the general incompetence of our heroes in killing vampires, and how this season creates one absolutely epic piece of fanwank. Of course, we also decide who gets the Dougie and who gets the Dickie, which is never a dull moment! It's the end, but the moment has been prepared for… (were we ever going to start out this blurb with anything else!?) We finally reach the end of Tom Baker's seven year tenure on the show with the Master embarking on a bonkers scheme that threatens the entire universe. But one question remains – is Logopolis actually any good!? Join us as we discuss dressing for job that you want, why Tegan is magnificently annoying in the best way possible, how this story plays into the history of the podcast, the stupidity of some of the Doctor's plans, how Logopolitan society is based on Kabbalah, how camp the new Master is, and how Adric actually does math. Back in N-Space, we find ourselves in the very odd (but apparently extremely harmonious) society of Traken, ruled over by an apparently all-powerful Keeper in The Keeper of Traken! All is not as it seems, as an old, kinda crispy enemy lurks in the background, ready to steal all of our bodies in his quest to keep living… Join us as we discuss the clear influences of Shakespeare, how the Trakenites were able to procure weapons so quickly, the rampant use of ring tropes, how Adric calls the Doctor out on his nonsense, the issues with Trakenite architecture not being load-bearing, and the interesting story parallels between The Keeper of Traken and J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. It's time to BRING THE WEIRD as we wrap up the E-Space trilogy with a white void, slavers, lion-man slaves (who used to be slavers), magic mirrors, and more questions than answers. Oh, and Adric spends most of the time flipping coins. It can only be Warriors' Gate! Join us as we discuss how the Tharils look at time (or how they think they're better than everyone else), how K9 continues to be done dirty (even up to her last story), the return of the bad boss trope, whether Romana was put in danger of predatory behaviour, the true moral lesson of the story, and how Reilly wants to consign Adric to the same fate as Katarina. To nobody's surprise, Anthony expresses how he would follow a cult led by Romana. It's Doctor Who-does-Vampires as we encounter everyone's favourite bloodsuckers in E-Space (well, everyone except Diana, who apparently thoroughly dislikes vampires!) Throw in some absolutely unnecessary Time Lord lore, and we have State of Decay. Join us as we discuss whether this would feel more natural with Dudley Simpson's organic music over the synth, the merits and issues of Adric, whether Wil Wheaton and Matthew Waterhouse have ever met, how an old script can somehow feel like a rush-job, the amazing beards in this story, and whether or not Time Lords have a race memory of the vampires. Of course, we try to figure out what the Wasting is – beyond being the Wasting. Tegan wants to return to Heathrow Airport so she can actually start her new job in cabin crew and the Doctor is happy to oblige. There's bad Doctor Who that makes you ROFL. There's bad Doctor Who that just leaves you baffled. And sometimes, if you're lucky, you find both in one story. Four to Doomsday, Peter Davison's first dip in the Who pool, was a tale of two reactions for Team PTO. Good thing the political angles (incel Adric, anyone?) were so outnumbered by hilarious/dumb/hallucinatory choices (Tegan can draw like DaVinci and pilot a TARDIS by crying now?) We're off into E-Space this episode, as we encounter a group of people who've come full circle in… uh… Full Circle! We are also introduced to our newest companion, Adric. What will the Watchers think of him!? Will it be love at first sight? (Let's be honest… probably not. Everyone knows his reputation!) Join us as we discuss unexpected semi-nudity (butts!), the mathematical nature of the Starliner's society (and how they evolved to it), how Dungeons & Dragons keeps coming into this Season, the names of the Starliner dwellers, how the Deciders must have rehearsed their introductions on multiple occasions, and where the lesser known Alzarian Cat fits into the evolutionary stage. Mysteries come in all shapes and forms. From a small-scale murder to an alien conspiracy. But when they arise the Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa and Adric are the perfect team to deal with them. The Merfolk Murders by Tim Foley (4 parts) St Andrews, Scotland, 1940. The Merfolk are a university society meeting through the summer to discuss murder mystery stories. Innocent escapism during wartime, they say. Their latest book is The Casebook of Orion Hood - whose hero is all-too-familiar to the Doctor... When a real-life murder occurs soon after their gathering, the Doctor's friends encourage him to investigate. Is one of the Merfolk responsible? Was this crime the result of espionage or envy? The Doctor must embrace his deerstalker once more and solve this wartime mystery - before the killer can strike again! Dream Team by Lizzie Hopley (2 parts) “Welcome to Concordium! The one-stop destination for elite and effective corporate bonding.” A protected wonder of space is being exploited for ‘company away days' but when the Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa and Adric land to challenge the organisers, they fall into a web of perfectly tailored nightmares. As the Doctor confronts one of the most dangerous monsters in existence, one that uses your own mind against you while it feeds, his companions fall deeper into the trap and a nasty truth is revealed - you can die in dreams. The Gallifreyan Files Podcast: A Traveler's Guide to the Whonivderse
Now that the SAGAFTRA strike is over Jordan's TARDIS is working again. It is time (haha, time!) that we carry on through our quest. And, we now say goodbye to a Gallifreyan Files certified favourite companion: Adric. Hi, Matthew Waterhouse!
It's certainly a shocker as we say goodbye to Adric. Plus the return of the Cybermen who have a new look. Apparently the freighter is run by a mother and son....
The Doctor and Romana find themselves slumming it in a pocket-sized parallel universe. Worse still, they land on the home world of - loathe him or hate him - that Alzarian irritant, Adric. Chuck in a few indecisive Deciders, some evolving arachnids and a bunch of amphibian Gumbies, and it's another trying jaunt for our two intrepid Time Lords. This episode can also be found at iTunes/Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Audible and all other podcatchers (as far as we know).
It's only the second story of the season and our regulars all seem to have completely different characterisations. Tegan can draw, Adric is a moody teenager and Nyssa does nothing.
The TARDIS is hijacked by a time-walking Tharil, who takes it to the gateway to the past and future, just in case negative space wasn't sci-fi enough. Adric becomes useful, and the Doctor tackles slavery. We say goodbye to the goodest boy ever to roll across the TARDIS threshold (and also Romana). Plenty to enjoy in this latest episode of The Whovian Review.
New season, New Doctor! It's the Tegan and Nyssa show for most of Castrovalva as Adric is away with the Master and the Doctor spends most of the time in a box.
The Doctor, Romana, K-9, and stowaway Adric encounter another crashed ship in e-space, but this one contains vampires and a swinging pendulum of oppression. Listen quickly before this episode decays alongside its subject matter.

Continuing the E-Space trilogy, Sarah was right, Adric has stowed away and we meet actual Vampires.
Tell Dexeter we've come to Full Circle in our watch of season 18. We see Romana's bedroom, meet Adric and his mates, and there's much debate about the actual People to Marshmen to fruit cycle....
In this episode of the Who's He? Podcast.... The News Phil and Paul cast their eye over what Doctor Who news they have missed over the last few weeks. There is series 14 casting news with Jinkx Monsoon cast in an as of yet unspecified role and a new 60th Anniversary multimedia event called Doom's Day has been released which leaves both Phil and Paul cold. Omega's Tat Corner In a long overdue return to the corner of tat, it's more 60th Anniversary news with Stieff releasing a special First Doctor teddy bear that you would have to sell a kidney for if you wanted to buy it! Review - Four to Doomsday "Four to Doomsday" is the second serial of the 19th season of the British science fiction television series Doctor Who. It originally aired on BBC One in four weekly parts from 18 January to 8 February 1982. The serial features the Fifth Doctor (played by Peter Davison) and his companions Tegan, Nyssa, and Adric. The Doctor and his companions arrive on a spaceship heading to Earth, where they discover the ship's crew and passengers are actually from different eras and planets. They are being controlled by the Monarch, an advanced and manipulative alien who plans to use the humans to repopulate his own race and conquer the universe. The Doctor and his companions must stop the Monarch's plans before it's too late. Well, Phil and Paul aren't too enthused about this story and were hoping the Target novelisation would save the day but unfortunately this was not be! However, the pair of them get into conversation about the crowded TARDIS and just how much the TARDIS crew want to punch Adric! Two members of British intelligence obtained the body of Glyndwr Michael, a tramp who died from eating rat poison, dressed him as an officer of the Royal Marines and placed personal items on him identifying him as the fictitious Captain (Acting Major) William Martin. Correspondence between two British generals that suggested that the Allies planned to invade Greece and Sardinia, with Sicily as merely the target of a feint, was also placed on the body. Forensic examination showed these documents had been read and Ultra decrypts of German messages showed that the Germans fell for the ruse. German reinforcements were shifted to Greece and Sardinia before and during the invasion of Sicily; Sicily received none. The full effect of Operation Mincemeat is not known, but Sicily was liberated more quickly than anticipated and losses were lower than predicted. Support the show
