We return to our classic Doctors in sequence today, after last week's jump back to tie in with Season 7 on blu-ray. Today, we're looking at a Sixth Doctor novel that should never have existed, until another author was held up and couldn't make his deadline. Steve Cole joins us to explain how Justin Richards approached him to write The Shadow in the Glass, and how they worked together to create one of the greatest books in the Past Doctor Adventures range.
It's time for our annual birthday tradition! When a Five(ish) Fangirl celebrates a birthday, she gets to pick a Doctor Who Big Finish audio for us to review—and this time, it's Rachel's turn! Her pick? The Apocalypse Element, a high-stakes adventure featuring the Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe, and the ever-menacing Daleks. We discuss its thrilling connections to The Time War, Gallifrey's fate, and why this story stands out. Plus, some birthday fun, podcast updates, and your feedback! The Sixth Doctor's fortieth anniversary celebrations continue, courtesy of LudoSphere Incorporated, with the greatest adventure ever streamed... Responding to a distress call from an old friend, the Doctor and Mel find themselves in 'Cyberia', a prison camp run by an even older foe. But this time, the Cyber Leader's machinations are just the tip of one very sinister iceberg, one that will test the Doctor to his very limit, and beyond... We hope you're hiding behind the sofa, because 'The Trials of a Time Lord' are about to begin! My guests today are Lisa McMullin and Alfie Shaw, both of whom write for Big Finish Productions, creators of audio dramas ranging from established series like Doctor Who, Sherlock Holmes, and Dark Shadows to original dramas featuring the Air Transport Auxiliary from World War II and Marcus Tullius Cicero in Ancient Rome. Lisa started her career as a drama teacher before moving into dramatic writing—she's written for TV series like Death in Paradise and the Sister Boniface Mysteries as well—and Alfie, who is also a producer for Big Finish, dabbled in stand-up comedy. We talk about Big Finish's apparently magical ability to redeem characters—including villains—who were less than beloved, the challenges and opportunities of recasting familiar characters, the way Big Finish finds new writers (including the best ways to do that), what the writing process looks like for an audio series, and a lot more. While there's a lot of Doctor Who in this conversation, there's also a lot of insight into the creative process, too. We apologize for being a bit vague about particular stories so as not to spoil them for those who haven't heard them. Here's my conversation with Lisa McMullin and Alfie Shaw. Episode breakdown: 00:00 Introduction 01:39 Lisa's creative childhood 09:22 Alfie's early passion for stand-up. 11:03 Alfie worked at BBC before Big Finish. 21:10 Lisa met writers, felt impostor syndrome, networked successfully. 23:19 Mixed interests: Paul McGann, river, Big Finish's "Survivors." 27:46 Amused student challenges English class symbolism interpretations. 34:57 AI affects creativity more than expected. 42:27 Exploring creativity within set formats is valuable. 44:13 Big Finish enhances characters like Sixth Doctor, Daleks. 50:54 Varied reactions to piece on religion, conversion. 57:04 Balancing new ideas and classic elements creatively. 59:44 Paul Spragg entries processed anonymously for judging panel selection. 01:05:56 Balancing established and new talent in writing. 01:14:58 Audio parallels theater through character-driven dialogue. 01:21:24 Recast Doctors' strength: unique, non-traditional portrayals. 01:23:24 Continuously innovate and explore new creative possibilities. 01:28:25 Eleventh Doctor and Jacob Dudman. Check out the full show notes (now including transcripts!!) at fycuriosity.com, and connect with me and fellow creatives on Substack. Please leave a review for this episode—it's really easy and will only take a minute, and it really helps me reach new listeners. Thanks! If you enjoyed our conversation, I hope you'll share it with a friend. Want more? Here are handy playlists with all my previous interviews with guests in Doctor Who and writing.

Welcome to Part One of our intermittent ongoing look at The Trial of a Time Lord, a single 14-part Doctor Who serial that comprised the whole of Season 23, televised between September and December 1986, but broken up into four separate novelizations. Confusingly released out of order and non-consecutively. Jim Sangster, Doctor Who Literature's multi-talented co-producer, logo designer, and in-house band, adapted and performed this week's introductory number, appeared as a talking head on the Trial of a Time Lord DVDs (recorded 16 years prior to the production of this episode), and is this week's guest. We'll about about Liverpool and its many connections to Doctor Who, and speculate just when does Trial take place relevant to the Sixth Doctor's own timeline? On the brand new Trap One Podcast Keith, Frazer (@Felixfrazer), Ross (@traitken) and Mark (@QuarkMcMalus) celebrate 40 years of Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor with Big Finish's The Quin Dilemma.
It's the final episode of this mammoth series of Too Hot For TV, so we thought what better way to finish than with a Bang enough for the Brigadier. In this episode Dylan is joined by Lee and Cam from the Polis Box to talk about three UNIT related releases. First up its the Big Finish play 'The Spectre of Lanyon Moor' written by Nicholas Pegg featuring the Sixth Doctor, Evelyn and the Brigadier. Then it's the BBV audio book ‘The Killing Stone' by Richard Franklin and featuring the Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, the Brigadier, Benton and Yates. Finally they talk about John Levene's album ‘The Ballads of Sergeant Benton' .And as always they answers the burning questions: Has Richard Franklin ever read a book? Who has an impressive knowledge of the motorway system of Great Britain? How many potatoes is too many potatoes?
review To celebrate forty years of wandering through time and space in style, the Sixth Doctor and some of his best friends are about to find themselves in the adventure of his lives... 1. The Exaltation by Jacqueline Rayner Hints of a temporal anomaly bring the Doctor and Mel to Arunopal on the day King Otho steps down as ruler. But Otho has a dilemma - which of his five sons should succeed to the throne? He has a deadly game in mind to solve the problem - and the target is a certain Time Lord... 2. Escape from Holy Island by Chris Chapman The history books tell us that on the 8th of June, 793 AD, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne was burnt to the ground by Viking raiders. But history also records that "fiery dragons were seen flying in the sky" - can that be true? With time running out, the Doctor, Peri and a young HG Wells mobilise the island's monks as the real raiders of Lindisfarne thunder over the North Sea - and they don't look like Vikings... 3. Sibling Rivalry by Robert Valentine The Doctor, Constance and Flip are stuck on an alien planet in the middle of a civil war. To make matters worse, the Sontarans have invaded. To make matters worse still, two of the dastardly quins - the volatile Clarent and the odious Dellan - are both on the scene... and the Doctor may not survive their furious competition. 4. Children of the Revolution by Robert Valentine With their plans causing havoc, wicked quins Clarent and Dellan are at loggerheads. But as the schemes of Sontaran Battle Marshal Skurr reach their climax, the only thing more dangerous than the brothers' competing against each other... is the brothers joining forces. 5. The Thousand Year Thaw by Chris Chapman Once every thousand years, the frozen planet of Zycros thaws, revealing the most fertile soil in the universe. For a brief window, Zycros becomes the farming capital of the cosmos, and that brings with it many visitors - including a small blue box and its two occupants, keen to stretch their legs. But as the ice melts and the temperature rises, the Doctor and Peri realise that this pleasant stroll may be the last one they ever take together... 6. The Firstborn by Jacqueline Rayner The Quins have succeeded in their quest - a little too well. Multiple Doctors congregate on Arunopal, bringing with them a terrible threat to reality... This release comes with a bonus audiobook: The Ultimate Poe by Andrew Collins. **Please note: the Collectors' Edition CDs are strictly limited to a pressing of just 1,500 copies**
The Sixth Doctor is no stranger to courtroom drama, but faces a very different challenge when he prepares to defend a most unusual Judoon. After an environmental clearance mission goes wrong, Captain Kybo of the Nineteenth Judoon Interplantary Force is stranded in Victorian England, bound in chains, an exhibit in a circus show. But he has allies: Eliza Jenkins – known to audiences as ‘Thomasina Thumb' – and the larger-than-life ‘clown' in the colourful coat.Uncovering a trail of injustice and corruption, the Doctor and Kybo soon find themselves on trial for their lives... We've reached the Sixth Doctor, as we continue our adventures and our quest to feature a different incarnation each day. We take a look at the first novel which expands on the era of the Sixth Doctor, long before Big Finish bought us Evelyn Smythe, Flip, Constance, Charley/Mila, or anyone else. Author Steve Lyons joins us to chat, as Dave and Kenny share their (very positive) thoughts on the book.

Forget the Star Beast, the return of David Tennant and that surprise cameo by the Monoids.... probably. It's time for a brand new episode of Too Hot For TV. This time Dylan is joined by Pete Lambert, together they traverse both comics and audios. First up it's the Doctor Who Weekly comic strip 'The Tide of Time' written by Steve Parkhouse with art by Dave Gibbons, featuring the Fifth Doctor. Then it's Sixth Doctor and Charlie Big Finish Audio 'The Condemned' written by Eddie Robson and directed by Nick Briggs. And as always they answer the questions: Who is Peter Davidson?Who had a catalogue of imaginary Doctor Who Toys?Which doctor who monster is not a Twink?
If cats have nine lives, Beep the Meep must be part cat. The titular character of The Star Beast comic strip and 60th anniversary special has already had at least two lives in Doctor Who: First as a featured player in the comic strip of Doctor Who Magazine, where he (it?) encountered the Fourth Doctor twice — in Beep's 1980 debut and the 1996 sequel. Then Beep made the jump to audio in The Ratings War for Big Finish, meeting the Sixth Doctor where we finally got to hear the creature's catchphrase, “Meep Meep!” Now Beep is graduating to the TV series, and in celebration of that we've put the Randomizer on standby and have steered the podcast to Beep the Meep's first adventure, The Star Beast — the original, you might say. Follow along with us as we go back to 1980 Blackcastle, where a cute alien was on the run, lead was plentiful on rooftops, and the Fourth Doctor picked up a new companion named Sharon… Subscribe to our newsletter at pulltoopen.net for extended notes on The Star Beast. It's the joy of six on The Power of 3 today. The Sixth Doctor and Melanie Bush meet for the first time in today's adventure, Business Unusual, as we're joined by author Gary Russell. Throw in twin Autons, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, and continuity references, and there's plenty to discuss.
In this episode of the Who's He? Podcast..... The News Phil and Paul catch up on the latest news including the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary concert and their thoughts on the new theme tune from Murray Gold. But of course, the big news is that all Doctor Who is finally coming to the BBC iPlayer. However, all is not what it seems as owing to a licensing dispute, An Unearthly Child will not be included! Phil and Paul discuss the furore over this. Review - Voyage to the New World It's Big Finish time! And this time the lads elected to listen to Voyage to the New World, starring Colin Baker as the Doctor and Christopher Benjamin and Trevor Baxter as Jago and Litefoot. This story sees the TARDIS materialize in the past, and the Doctor's companions, Professor Litefoot and Henry Gordon Jago, find themselves prisoners of the natives in the New World. But there's something strange here - stranger than even the colonists, led by Englishman John White. What are the ghostly children? And who is the Old Man of Croaton? Phil and Paul remain somewhat confused by this audio play and that's not including whether this is part of the Jago & Litefoot range or the Sixth Doctor range?!? But how does the Jago & Litefoot double act hold up in this story set during the colonisation of America? I know the title sounds like a nod to some sort of 70's pornography, but it's not! It's the touching ending of the Rory and Amy saga! Coupled with a really depressing Sixth Doctor monstrosity.
