Since 1994, the Washington Department of Transportation has operated a roadside memorial program that allows for the creation and installation of signs along state highways in honor of victims of fatal collisions. Washington was the first state in the nation to start a roadside memorial program, and there are now more than 1,000 signs posted along state highways bearing a message such as “Reckless Driving Costs Lives” or “Please Don’t Drink and Drive” above the name of a crash victim. Nearly 70% of the roughly 500 signs installed in the first 15 years of the program are still standing. The Columbian recently reported on WSDOT’s current efforts to collect public feedback about the future of its roadside memorial program and possible changes to it, such as limiting how long the signs can be up for and how often they can be renewed by family members. Kelly Moyer, a staff reporter at The Columbian, joins us for more details, including concerns that family members who had paid for memorial signs shared with her. We also hear from Sarah Risser, the treasurer and board member of the Portland chapter of the national nonprofit Families for Safe Streets. In 2019, while Risser was driving with her 18 year-old son in Wisconsin, a motorist crashed into the vehicle, killing her son and leaving her injured. Last year, Risser placed a sign honoring victims at every fatal crash site in Portland, and she has also created bike memorials at the request of families of cyclists killed on Portland roads.

Sometimes the hardest part of ultrarunning isn't the miles—it's just getting an episode recorded. After multiple attempts, the HappyCast crew finally sits down with Lisa Decker and Shashi Reddy to share their stories from two of Laz Lake's infamous journey races: Vol State and Heart of the South. Both are 300+ mile tests of grit, resourcefulness, and pure stubbornness, and their experiences run the gamut from roadside naps to navigating storms and heat rash with Dollar General t-shirts.Lisa takes us through the camaraderie of her “trauma bonded trash panda” crew at Vol State, while Shashi details the unpredictable game of Heart of the South—where runners don't even know the starting line until the night before. Between road angels, the legendary “meat wagon” driver who refuses to let you quit, and the strange joys of eating soggy Subway sandwiches mid-race, the stories capture the feral, unpredictable beauty of these journey runs.Since those finishes, Lisa and Shashi haven't slowed down. Lisa went straight into the brutal heat of the Habanero 100, earning her first sub-30 finish, while Shashi found his way back to the trails at the 6-0 Ranch 50K. With both eyeing even bigger challenges ahead, this conversation is equal parts hilarious, inspiring, and a testament to what happens when runners embrace the chaos of the road.Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. Recently I was talking with one of my adult programs about successional and keystone species. Successional species are those early plants which come into disturbed landscapes, helping to knit the ecological neighbourhood back together. They are quick to come and quick to go, providing the land with nutrients to heal and grow. Keystone species are those species who are provide for many other forms of life. Their work in sustaining the community around them is vast relative to their abundance. They provide food and the place to eat it. The make space for life to thrive and sustain. If the keystone suddenly goes missing than the community make up will drastically change, often for the worse. Goldenrods, especially those which make up the Canada Goldenrod complex are some of the most important successional an keystone species in my area. Over the years I have investigated Goldenrod on different levels, from the technical and scientific to the intuitive and relational. Both vantage points have served in getting to know these amazing and powerful plants better. I decided to head out with a makeshift milkcrate studio to sit with the Goldenrod, Bumblebees and Crickets and make a show together. I hope this helps shed a warm golden glow on these essential components of the Great Lakes bioregion. To learn more :The Asters, Goldenrods and Fleabanes of Grey and Bruce Counties. On the morning of May 15, 2025, officers from multiple local, state and federal agencies raided the West Coast Game Park Safari and seized more than 300 animals. The park had a wide variety of animals, including lions and other big cats, capybaras, camels and a chimpanzee. They also had chickens, sheep, llamas and goats. People had been complaining about dangerous conditions at the park for years and the U.S. Department of Agriculture cited them for violating the Animal Welfare Act numerous times. Law enforcement also found over 80 grams of meth, eight grams of cocaine, 44 guns, and $1.6 million. Justin Higginbottom is a reporter for Jefferson Public Radio based in southern Oregon, and he joins us to share what he’s learned about the raid and what led up to it. The Bear Man of Harrison, Michigan In the 1930s and 1940s, motorists driving through Harrison, Michigan, often stopped at a roadside attraction unlike any other: Spikehorn Meyers' Bear Den. Here, an eccentric old woodsman dressed in buckskin invited families to feed, pet, and even shake hands with live black bears. For nearly three decades, John “Spikehorn” Meyer turned his rustic camp into a legendary stop along US-27.Visitors gasped as bears sipped soda from glass bottles and nibbled popcorn from their hands. Spikehorn became both a beloved folk hero and a thorn in the side of state conservation officers, proudly displaying a sign that read, “Feed Conservation Officers to the Bears.” In this episode of End of the Road in Michigan, we revisit the life of Spikehorn Meyers, his colorful partnership with “Chief Red Eagle,” and the unforgettable stories of the Bear Den. It's a tale of showmanship, danger, humor, and the unique roadside history that shaped small towns across Michigan.

This week on Driving Law, Kyla Lee and Paul Doroshenko discuss an unprecedented roadside drug enforcement campaign at the Shambhala Music Festival, where police used a mobile lab to take 24 blood samples on-site — likely a Canadian first. They examine the legal, procedural, and privacy issues this raises for impaired driving investigations. Next, they turn to Edmonton, where police uncovered more than $200,000 in fraudulent insurance claims tied to ten tow truck companies. The case exposes systemic abuse in the towing industry and the lack of effective oversight. Finally, the Ridiculous Driver of the Week is a Nanaimo motorcyclist caught on video violently shoving a cyclist off the road. Kyla and Paul break down the legal implications and the broader concerns for vulnerable road user safety. The electric vehicle revolution isn't just changing how we drive—it's transforming roadside assistance forever. In this eye-opening conversation with Ron Sledzieski, founder of EV Road Hero, we uncover a game-changing opportunity for tow operators nationwide. Forget everything you thought you knew about handling stranded EVs. Ron introduces us to mobile EV rescue charging—a faster, safer, and far easier alternative to traditional towing methods. His portable 200-pound charging unit delivers ultra-clean power that can provide stranded electric vehicles with 5-10 miles of range in just 20 minutes—enough to reach the nearest charging station. What makes this solution revolutionary isn't just the technology; it's the business model. Tow operators can charge around $200 per rescue ($100 plug fee plus $100 for the charging session), completing the service in a fraction of the time a traditional tow requires. For operators already receiving calls about stranded EVs, this $4,995 investment could transform their business efficiency and profitability. We explore fascinating revenue opportunities beyond simple rescue charging, including subscription-based "range anxiety insurance" that provides passive income from EV owners seeking peace of mind. One operator already has 83 monthly subscribers at $19.99 each while averaging just one actual service call per month! Ron clarifies the crucial distinction between "rescue charging" (emergency roadside assistance) and "convenience charging" (non-emergency full charges), explaining why his solution is specifically designed for roadside emergencies. He also shares exciting developments in grid-based commercial charging stations with simplified tap-to-pay systems. Ready to position your towing business at the forefront of this growing market? Connect with Ron directly at 203-710-9300 or visit evroadhero.com to learn how you can turn stranded EVs into one of your most profitable service calls.

While tending flower baskets before dawn in the historic town of Henley-on-Thames, Gerry spotted something watching him from a narrow passageway—a figure cloaked in shadow, completely black, with no face and no sound. Dressed like something out of the 15th century, the figure slid silently back into the darkness without ever breaking eye contact. What was it? A ghost? A shadow person? A conversation with Czech Cider Fan Dan Samek This episode brings us to the heart of Europe by way of Vermont. Ria sat down with Dan Samek, a cider enthusiast and home distiller from Prague, to talk about the evolving cider scene in the Czech Republic. They met at Kilowatt Park which is on the west side of the Connecticut River in White River Junction, Vermont. Dan Samek This was the first stop on the Cider Tour to Vermont and New York in May 2025. In this Cider Chat featuring Czech Cider 1. A Fruitful History The Czech Republic is rich with apples, pears, plums, and cherries and exports a lot of fruit. For centuries, fruit trees lined roads to feed traveling soldiers. This is a legacy left from the Barak times, in the 18th century 2. Cider by Way of Calvados Dan journey to cider started while he was working at a French winery He has an affection for Calvados and thus made cider to distill. His process blends natural fermentation and dry yeast (He favors the yeast known as 72B). The apples come from old trees in his one-acre garden-orchard near Prague. 3. Small Scene, Big Potential Early cider makers in the Cech Republic began around 2007. Prague had a cider shop (InCider) and a cider bar, but today you can find cider at most bars. Cidrerie Kliment and Utopia are two standout producers—Utopia leans all natural. 4. Enthusiasts Leading the Way Many Czech homes still have fruit trees. Backyard fermenters use presses ranging from barrel-style to hydraulic. Gardening clubs and university programs help spread knowledge. 5. Beyond Apples Dan grows quince and medlars and has a Sorbus domestica tree in his orchard. Morovia which is to the north of Prague has a Sorubus Domestic museum. There's a growing appreciation for traditional and lesser-known fruits in fermentation.
