Dylan Thomsen: AA Road Safety spokesperson on whether roadside drug tests will pick up on ADHD medication

Legislation to allow roadside drug testing has recently passed its third and final reading in Parliament - but concerns have been raised. Some fear that people using ADHD medication could be caught out by the new roadside drug tests carried out by police. AA Road Safety spokesperson Dylan Thomsen says testing devices in Australia don't generally pick up on ADHD medication or medicinal cannabis - so it's possible people won't need to worry. "The law is also going to have a medical defence... so if you have a prescription and you're using it as prescribed, you shouldn't be looking at any fines or demerit points even if you did return a positive test." John MacDonald: Roadside drug testing? Great. Will the police cope? Mmmm

I'm sure you'll tell me if you think I'm stuck in the past, but I reckon that with the police now being expected to do roadside drug tests —as well as everything else— I think we should bring back the old MOT. The old traffic cops. Officially, it was known as the traffic safety service, but we all knew it as the MOT. And, yes, I know the police are struggling as it is to get the 500 new cops by the end of the year that the government has promised. But if they are now going to be expected to do thousands of roadside drug tests —as well as the alcohol tests and writing out tickets for speeding drivers— then I think they should create a separate, dedicated traffic division. The way the roadside drug testing is going to work is that drivers will do a saliva test. If it's positive, it'll be sent to the lab for further testing. As well as that, an extra test will be done on the spot and, if that's positive as well, the police will order them to stay off the road for 12 hours. As someone who thinks we should have a zero alcohol limit for drivers, anything to try and catch the clowns who drive stoned is a good thing in my book. Especially when you consider the carnage that has been caused by drivers high on drugs. Here's a stat that proves it: in 2022 alone, 112 people died in crashes where drugs were involved. That was about 30% of all road deaths that year. So the MOT was merged with the police in 1992 and, considering the fact that police are going to be expected to do 50,000 roadside drug tests each year as well as more roadside alcohol tests, change is needed. The Government's told them that instead of doing 3 million alcohol tests a year, they're going to be expected to do 3.3 million – so an extra 300,000. So 300,000 more alcohol tests, plus the 50,000 roadside drug tests. I imagine Police Minister Mark Mitchell would say that the police already have a highway patrol, but I don't think that's going to be sufficient long-term. And it's why I think we should have a genuine, dedicated traffic policing service. The other aspect of this too is that the Government has told the police that if they don't meet these roadside testing targets —for the alcohol and for the drugs— they won't get all their funding. So, full marks to the political parties that voted this drug-testing legislation through, but I think we're setting the police up to fail if we don't have a re-think about how all this testing is going to be done. And, for me, the best way to ensure this new law lives up to its promise is to have a dedicated traffic policing service. Like we used to. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A woman's three-hour roadside wait for an ambulance following a road traffic collision in West Clare has been slammed as outrageous by a government TD. The National Ambulance Service was alerted to a single vehicle incident in Doonbeg at roughly half 11 yesterday morning, but had no resource available to respond to the scene. The Cork based air ambulance was eventually dispatched, and then stood down when a road ambulance became available - by the time the woman reached hospital, it was an almost four-hour ordeal. Clare Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe insists he'll be raising the incident with the Health Minister.

Welcome back to The Resus Room! This time, we're diving into the fascinating and often overlooked world of electrical injuries. From household mishaps and workplace accidents to tasers and even lightning strikes, electrical injuries can range from minor shocks to life-threatening cardiac arrests. As always, we'll be taking you through the full spectrum of care, from first contact at the roadside to critical management in resus. And let's be honest, there's a real lack of clear guidance out there when it comes to managing these cases. So, we've done the legwork, scoured the literature, and we're here to make sense of it all. In this episode, we'll cover: Pathophysiology; how electricity interacts with the body and why not all shocks are created equal. Classification; what makes a low-voltage injury different from a high-voltage one, and why that matters. Prehospital & ED Management; who needs an ECG, who needs admission, and what to do with those tricky "seemingly fine" patients. Special cases; tasers, lightning strikes, and the unique challenges they pose. One of the big questions we'll be tackling: Does everyone who gets an electric shock need to go to hospital? We've all seen them, the patient that has a shock at work, but they feel fine. So, do they need a work-up, or can they safely go home? So, grab a coffee (or maybe a non-conductive beverage of choice), and let's get stuck in to Electrical Injuries! Once again we'd love to hear any thoughts or feedback either on the website or via X @TheResusRoom! Simon, Rob & James

In 1950, the Texas A&M Board of Directors charged the Texas Transportation Institute (now the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, or TTI) to enlist the broad resources of the college across the spectrum of transportation research to benefit Texas, while also providing unique educational opportunities for students to study and work in the field. This agreement solidified the Cooperative Research Program between the then-Texas Highway Department (now the Texas Department of Transportation) and TTI. For 75 years, these agencies have partnered to conduct applied research that benefits Texans and travelers worldwide by innovating and improving the safety, mobility, and resilience of our transportation network. Cardiac Arrest in pregnancy affects around 1: 12-30,000 women in the developed world. As you'd expect the risk of death for mother and child is extremely high, but some causes of arrest are reversible and we can make a real impact with our care and treatment of these cases Now it goes without saying that these are some of the most emotive, complex and technically challenging Resuscitations that you could think to be involved in; by definition young female arrest with unborn babies involved. Thankfully this is not going to be a case that many of us see, but with the stakes so high and potential to impact on the outcome of two patients, it's an area that's worth real consideration, preparation and mental rehearsal in case we are one of the few that may need to deal with it! In this episode we're going to run through all the same stuff that you'd expect; pathophysiology of pregnancy, aetiology and the way in which we should approach these arrests. But then we're lucky enough to be joined by Caroline Leech, an EM and Prehospital doctor who's an expert in the area having just published a key paper that's prompted loads of discussion in crew room and online on the topic of maternal arrest and Resuscitative Hysterotomy which will really challenges our perception on survival for both mum and the unborn baby if a RH is indicated. So we'll be running through that paper with some really valuable insights from Caroline and wrap up with some questions to her exploring experience from cases, along with potential strategies for how approach and manage these cases for those working both in prehospital and in-hospital settings. Once again we'd love to hear any thoughts or feedback either on the website or via X @TheResusRoom! Simon, Rob & James

Curious City
Why telling “the proper stories” is vital to understanding the Piasa

Roadside attractions aren't always the kitschy photo op we imagine them to be. Some have a complicated history that you can't see from the side of the road. Last episode, we took a road trip to Southern Illinois to look into a metal, firebreathing dragon. Today, we're looking at a different landmark in nearby Alton: the Piasa. Unlike the Kaskaskia dragon, the Piasa has a centuries-old history that starts with the Indigenous people of what is now the Mississippi River. The Piasa — as most people know it — is a mythical creature painted on the bluffs of the Mississippi. The image depicts a winged figure with antlers, fangs and talons. It's a recreation of the original image which was destroyed in the 1850s because of quarrying on the bluffs. Through the centuries, different stories have been told about the meaning and origins behind this creature, including one that is popular but fabricated. Dr. Mark Wagner, director of the Center for Archaeological Investigations at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, talks about the layered history of the mural. Logan Pappenfort, director of tribal relations for the Illinois State Museum, talks about why it's important to uplift true cultural artifacts and says the real history behind them isn't hard to uncover if you know where to look.

Redefining Mindsets and Building Community In this week's Team Never Quit Podcast, Marcus and Melanie's guest is Earl Granville, a true testament to resilience, leadership, and the power of positive mindset. Earl shares his transformative journey from trauma to triumph, offering listeners insights into how to redefine their own mindset to create the space for positive shifts in life. He discusses stepping out of your comfort zone, becoming the leader you are meant to be, and the critical importance of building and maintaining a healthy community. Earl's story is nothing short of inspiring. Just two weeks into basic training at Fort Benning, GA, with his twin brother Joe, the tragic events of 9/11 unfolded, marking a pivotal moment in his life. Earl went on to serve nine years as an Infantryman in the Army National Guard, with multiple deployments to Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. During his final tour, Earl lost his left leg below the knee due to a roadside bomb, and tragically, he also lost two of his teammates, Major Scott Hagerty and Specialist Derek Holland, on that same day. After the loss of his limb in combat and the passing of his brother Joe, who took his own life while serving on active duty, Earl discovered the power of a positive mindset and became a passionate advocate for mental health, physical fitness, and resilience. He continues his journey as a public speaker, traveling the country to share his story and motivate others to overcome challenges. In addition to speaking, Earl works with several non-profits like Operation Enduring Warrior, the Oscar Mike Foundation, and WarriorStrong, all of which help wounded veterans and law enforcement officers stay physically active post-injury. Earl's efforts have earned him numerous awards, including the 2018 Attorney General Heart So Big Award, the Junior Chamber International (JCI USA) TOYA Award, and the 2018 Daughters of the American Revolution Veterans Volunteer Award. He retired as a Staff Sergeant with multiple honors, including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Infantryman Badge. Tune in to hear how Earl Granville's story of overcoming adversity and his commitment to positive change can inspire you to face your own challenges with resilience, build stronger connections, and lead a life of purpose. (42:52) • I remember going over the headset talking to my guys like “Damn, it's beautiful here, look at this green grass. Who's water the grass in Afghanistan?” The next thing I remember, I saw nothing but black. (65:52) • I was ejected out of my Humvee and I wasn't wearing mu gunner's harness which probably saved my life, because the roof peeled back like a tuna can. (70:04) • Everything happened right in my situation. I really do feel that way. What do I have to complain about? (70:20) • Afghans don't have the will to fight. (76:26) • Have you ever met an Afghan or an Iraqi with an Iraqi flag or an Afghan flag tattoo? (76:43) • I went under for surgery on my hip, and I woke up in Germany, with a nurse pulling a breathing tube out of my throat. (79:02) • Joe [my twin brother] seeing me in this state, says to me: “I shoulda just gone with you. (84:23) • It's not forever. I'm gonna get my independence back. I'm gonna be walking again, cause it's not forever. (96:08) • While on active duty, my twin brother, Staff Sergeant Joe Granville, takes his own life. (97:57) • How do I get this second chance at life, and Joe [my twin brother] take his away? (98:08) • Not every mental health situation with an armed forces service member is PTSD related. (109:00) • The big thing people need is purpose – military or not. (110:29) • I found this passion of physical fitness once again thanks to being introduced to Crossfit.
