Episode 209 – How to Build a Roadside RV Repair Kit That Actually Makes Sense

RV Maintenance Tips and Information for the DIY

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 14, 2026 35:16 Transcription Available

Summary/IntroIn this episode of The Smart RVer Podcast, Eric Stark walks through how to build a roadside RV repair kit that actually makes sense. This is not about carrying every tool and spare part you can fit into a storage compartment. It is about putting together a practical kit to help you handle the most common trip-ruining problems before they become bigger issues.Eric explains why a good RV repair kit should be tailored to your RV, your travel style, and the problems you are most likely to face on the road. From electrical basics like a multimeter, fuses, crimpers, and connectors to plumbing fittings, leak tape, roof sealants, sewer parts, propane safety items, zip ties, and fasteners, this episode focuses on tools and supplies that can help you make safe, temporary repairs and keep your trip moving. The goal is not to turn every RVer into a full-time repair technician. The goal is to help RV owners be prepared, organized, and confident enough to handle minor problems before they become expensive, frustrating, or vacation-ending repairs.Show NotesIn this episode, Eric Stark discusses one of the most practical things an RV owner can do before heading out on the road: build a repair kit that is based on real-world RV problems. Many RVers either carry too little or carry a pile of random tools and parts that may not even fit their RV. Eric explains that the best roadside repair kit is not the biggest kit. It is the kit that makes sense for your specific RV.The episode begins by looking at why generic repair kits often fall short. RVs have different plumbing fittings, electrical setups, roof materials, sewer connections, and propane components. Because of that, copying someone else's list without looking at your own RV can leave you carrying parts that will not help when something actually breaks.Eric then walks through the major categories every practical kit should include. For electrical problems, he talks about the importance of a basic digital multimeter, assorted fuses, crimpers, wire strippers, connectors, and electrical tape. These items can help RV owners diagnose simple 12-volt and 120-volt issues instead of guessing. From there, the discussion moves into plumbing repairs. Eric covers the value of carrying fittings that match your RV, a tubing cutter, leak repair tape, a spare pump strainer, washers, and basic hand tools. A small water leak can quickly damage cabinets, flooring, and storage areas, so having the right supplies on hand can make a big difference.Roof and sealant supplies are also covered, including self-leveling lap sealant, non-sag sealant, RV roof repair tape, gloves, rags, and a plastic scraper. Eric reminds listeners that not every sealant is suitable for every part of an RV, and that using the wrong product can create more problems later. The episode also includes sewer-repair items such as a spare sewer cap, a twist-on waste valve, hose gaskets, bayonet fittings, and disposable gloves. These are small parts, but they can prevent a messy and frustrating situation at the campground.Propane safety is another important part of the conversation. Eric encourages RVers to carry leak detector solution, use the proper wrench, inspect propane pigtails, and know where the propane shutoff valves are located. He also makes it clear that propane is not something to guess with. If there is a leak or uncertainty, safety comes first.Eric wraps up the episode by covering fasteners, zip ties, hose clamps, bungee cords, tape, gloves, flashlights, and other simple items for temporary repairs. He also talks about what not to carry, including random parts, heavy tools you never use, incorrect sealants, unknown electrical parts, and plumbing fittings that do not match your RV.The main takeaway is simple: build your kit around your RV, not someone else's. A good roadside RV repair kit should help you diagnose the problem, make a safe temporary repair, and keep a minor issue from ruining the trip.Takeaways:Building a practical roadside RV repair kit is essential for ensuring a smooth trip.Every RV owner should customize their repair kit to meet their specific needs and circumstances.Electrical issues are common on the road, so carrying a multimeter can be invaluable.Water leaks can cause significant damage; having the right plumbing fittings can prevent disasters.Sunpro Mfg RV Slide Out Fabrics - Use Discount Code "5 Percent Discount"RV Roadside Repair ChecklistWholesale RV Extended WarrantiesContact Us via our Website or Phone or Text us @ 406-961-8688Our Online Resources: The Smart Rver YouTube Channel - Check Out Our No-Nonsense YouTube VideosSunpro Mfg - RV Sunshade, Windshield Covers & Slide Out Awning FabricsHot Boat Ropes - Marine Cordage- Anchor Lines, Dock Lines, Tow Lines, etc.Top Rated Podcast - The Smart RVer Podcast WebsiteCompanies mentioned in this episode:Wholesale WarrantiesHighway 93 RVSunpromfg.comCamcoValterraThetford

Roadside farmstands with homemade jams and bread are a common sight in Appalachia. Because they're unmanned, many of them work on the honor system: Take a carton of berries, leave some cash. But the humble farm stand is changing to keep up with an increasingly cash-free society. Folkways Reporter Wendy Welch recently visited a stand in Wythe County, Virginia and has this.  The post The Changing Appalachian Farmstand, This West Virginia Morning appeared first on West Virginia Public Broadcasting.

In this episode, Brian welcomes Steve from the UK to share the unsettling roadside encounter he experienced near Hibaldstow, North Lincolnshire, in July 1994.While driving home after a night of DJ work, Steve watched a heavily built, hair-covered creature—standing roughly six and a half feet tall—cross directly in front of his car before disappearing into the roadside brush. The creature moved with remarkable speed and an unusually smooth, fluid gait. As it passed through the headlights, Steve noticed straw or dried grass tangled in its matted hair and caught a brief profile of a pale gray or white face with an almost glossy appearance. Moments later, he heard three strange sounds from the darkness that reminded him of a dog making a reverse-sneezing noise.Fearing ridicule, Steve kept the encounter private for 28 years. He eventually began speaking about it after discovering similar reports from the surrounding area, along with stories of missing livestock and old mining tunnels beneath the local countryside.Steve also discusses several other unexplained experiences from his life, including an apparent childhood premonition of his grandmother's death, a cigar-shaped UFO he witnessed from an airplane in 1999, and disturbing activity inside a former home.Although he remains open-minded about the paranormal, Steve believes the creature he encountered was a living, flesh-and-blood animal.Steve also shares details about Haunted Waves, the paranormal radio show he co-hosts with Claire on Humber Wave Radio.Email BrianJoin Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? Tracheostomy and laryngectomy emergencies are classic high-acuity, low-frequency situations. They do not happen every day, but when they do, airway problems can develop quickly, and the wrong intervention can make things significantly worse. In this episode, we work through the practical approach to these patients, starting with the most important distinction: a patient with a tracheostomy may still have a patent upper airway, whereas someone who has undergone a total laryngectomy is an obligate neck breather. That single anatomical difference determines where oxygen and ventilation need to be delivered. We'll look at the different tubes, cuffs, inner cannulas, speaking valves and humidification devices you may encounter, before moving through the common causes of deterioration, particularly obstruction, displacement and bleeding. Using the National Tracheostomy Safety Project's green and red emergency algorithms, we break management down into simple, sequential steps: apply oxygen, remove attachments, remove the inner cannula, pass a suction catheter, deflate the cuff when appropriate and remove a non-functioning tube when necessary. These cases can initially feel intimidating, but a calm, structured approach can make them far more manageable. Once again we'd love to hear any thoughts or feedback either on the website or via X @TheResusRoom! Simon. Rob & James

Fancy Scientist: A Material Girl Living in a Sustainable World
Do Zoos Help Conservation? Research, Ethics, and Careers

Fancy Scientist: A Material Girl Living in a Sustainable World

Do zoos actually help conservation? Contribute to wildlife research? Or are they mostly to entertain people? A couple of years ago, I did a podcast interview all about zoos, and I thought this would be a great topic for my own podcast due to the complexity. It's not a straightforward answer…In fact, during the pandemic, when we were all watching The Tiger King, I did a whole blog post series on the ethics and research impacts of zoos, and these are still some of my most popular posts!Zoos were originally built purely for entertainment and were the only way most people could see an exotic animal. Placed in cement cages or concrete pits, animals were there to fascinate, but at the expense of their well-being. But as scientists and the public have learned more about animals, some zoos began to change. There are now high-quality institutions running genuine conservation science, captive breeding programs, and research on wild animal populations. But unfortunately, not all zoos have stepped up. There are still dilapidated roadside attractions where animals are locked in cement cages, might be forced to do unnatural and harmful tricks, or be bred to have a constant supply of babies for tourists to pose with for photos, and with nowhere to go once they get older. These zoos might do things that they call research, but really, this is a form of greenwashing so that they can use these small projects to justify their money-making operations from animals. On the flip side, I talk about how zoos genuinely contribute to conservation. For example, conducting real research on animals outside of their zoo population, providing genetic safety nets, and captive breeding animals like the black-footed ferret and golden lion tamarin from the brink of extinction. In this episode of the Fancy Scientist podcast, I'm going to walk you through zoos so that you can understand these differences, as well as offer some guidelines so that you can make an informed decision for yourself. I break down what separates a good zoo from a bad one, and the gray areas in between. I also address the harder question of whether zoos change people's minds. Many claim that zoos educate the public about wildlife, but just because they present information doesn't mean that people take it in or take conservation actions…Those are much harder to change. I talk about a meta-analysis of 56 studies on visitor attitudes after zoo visits, plus how zoos like Cheyenne Mountain Zoo are trying to close the gap between education and action with things like their sustainable palm oil initiative. And because this podcast is always about helping you build a wildlife career, I offer an overview of the different kinds of roles that you can obtain for employment, as well as my own behind-the-scenes experience, where I monitored elephant pregnancy hormones and worked on reproductive research for cotton-top tamarins. You'll get a rundown of the career paths zoos actually offer: zookeeping, education, communications, research, and creative roles like videography, plus wildlife-adjacent jobs in finance, fundraising, and law. I also explain what kinds of zoo work won't help your wildlife career, no matter how much hands-on animal experience it seems to offer.Specifically, we talk about:The history of zoos, and how they evolved from pure entertainment into institutions that can contribute to research, education, and conservationThe clear signs that separate an ethical zoo from an unethical one including enrichment, keeper barriers, and whether the public is allowed to touch wild animalsWhy Tiger King-style roadside zoos like Myrtle Beach Safari don't count as real conservation work, and how to spot greenwashing when a zoo claims to "support conservation"Why zoo populations serve as a safety net for species with critically small wild populationsReal conservation success stories through captive breeding, including golden lion tamarins and black-footed ferretsThe behind-the-scenes research zoos do that visitors never see, including my own experience monitoring elephant hormones as a Disney's Animal Kingdom internWhether zoos actually succeed at changing visitor attitudes and behavior toward conservation, and what the research saysThe strongest arguments against zoosAn overview of wildlife career paths at zoos: zookeeping, education, communications, research, creative and media roles, and wildlife-adjacent careers like finance, fundraising, and lawAnd MORE!Jump links:1:52 Tiger King during COVID4:59 History of zoos: from pure entertainment to modern standards7:28 Roadside zoos & Tiger King-style operations8:08 Signs of an ethical zoo: no touching wild animals, enrichment, barriers13:00 Captive breeding & maintaining genetic diversity15:10 Reintroduction programs & minimizing human contact16:37 Personal experience at Disney's Animal Kingdom (elephant endocrine research)20:31 Zoos & education: Do they change attitudes toward wildlife?23:47 The argument against zoos25:49 AZA accreditation & evolving zoo standards27:56 Careers in zoos overview33:02 Outro & upcoming free training: The Four Faux PawsDream of being a wildlife biologist, zoologist, conservation biologist, or ecologist? Face mask ventilation is one of those skills that can easily be overlooked. It's often seen as the simple bit of airway management — something that sits below the glamour of videolaryngoscopy, fibre-optics and endotracheal intubation. But the reality is that excellent face mask ventilation is one of the most important airway skills we have. In this episode, we take a deep dive into bag-valve-mask ventilation and airway adjuncts, exploring why this is far more than just putting a mask on a face and squeezing a bag. We discuss when facemask ventilation is indicated, how to identify patients who may be difficult to ventilate, and the practical steps that can dramatically improve success rates. We cover positioning, airway opening manoeuvres, mask seal techniques, the role of airway adjuncts and how to recognise whether your ventilations are actually working. We also look at troubleshooting common problems, the evidence comparing bag-mask ventilation with supraglottic airways and endotracheal intubation, and how to decide when it's time to move to another airway strategy. Whether you're working in the emergency department, prehospital environment or critical care, this episode is packed with practical tips, cognitive aids and evidence-based advice to help you deliver facemask ventilation with confidence and excellence. In this episode, Brian welcomes Doug from Oregon for an intense and deeply detailed account of a roadside Sasquatch encounter that took place in February 2006 along Highway 199 between Grants Pass, Oregon, and Crescent City, California.Doug explains how a late-night drive home through the dark, winding canyon near the Collier Tunnel and The Narrows turned into one of the most unforgettable moments of his life when his headlights and orange truck lights revealed a massive upright figure walking along the road.Doug describes the creature as unlike the classic bulky depictions many people imagine. Instead, he saw something towering, lean, powerful, and athletic, with the build of an enormous basketball player. He estimates it stood somewhere around ten feet tall or more, with long arms, massive shoulders, a narrow waist, pronounced musculature, pale gray skin, dark charcoal-gray hair, and orange-red eyes that appeared to catch the light as Doug passed in his 1995 Chevy dually. The creature did not run, panic, or react aggressively. It simply kept walking, calm and natural, as Doug drove by close enough to see its face, body structure, stride, hands, feet, and skin in startling detail. The conversation moves beyond the sighting itself into the emotional aftermath of seeing something so rare and impossible to easily explain. Doug talks about the shock, excitement, fear, and frustration that followed, especially after sharing the story with people who dismissed him or made him feel ridiculed. Over time, encouragement from his wife and conversations with Native friends, outdoorsmen, hunters, and other witnesses helped him become more open about what he saw.He also shares related local accounts from the same region, including sightings near Siskiyou Forks Road, Bluff Creek, Bald Hills Road, the Klamath River, Monkey Creek, and other deeply remote parts of Northern California and Southern Oregon.Brian and Doug also dig into one of the biggest questions surrounding roadside Sasquatch encounters: why would such an elusive creature be seen walking near or on a road? Brian offers the possibility that, like other animals, Sasquatch may sometimes use roads as the path of least resistance while moving from one area to another.Doug adds his own thoughts about the rugged terrain, river corridors, steep granite slopes, and hidden access points in the area where his encounter occurred. The discussion touches on Native traditions, flesh-and-blood theories, spiritual questions, government secrecy, missing people, wilderness fear, and the strange mix of curiosity and danger that seems to follow this phenomenon.Email BrianGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? Yoga pants, no bra, lingering hugs, and a rock-hard temptation that nearly breaks his willpower. He walks away… but the fantasies that follow are absolutely filthy.• Law school, a shy nerdy virgin friend, and the moment she discovers he's packing a genuinely monstrous cock — the biggest she's ever seen. Awkward flirting turns into shocked exploration, confidence boosting, and one of the funniest ‘don't judge a book' stories you'll hear.• An unexpected locker room moment between two longtime friends leads to surprising bi-curiosity, body comparisons, and lingering tension that changes how they see each other.• A detailed and intense CNC stalking fantasy that builds from patient pursuit to rough, choking, slapping, and deeply satisfying roadside release in a truck.Stick around. These stories are dripping with creativity, temptation, and raw heat.Join us over on Discord: https://discord.gg/uqqxsCSDfwSupport Nikky:• Patreon: Unlock exclusive confessions, bonus thoughts, and steamy Q&As at Patreon.com/DearNikky. “Nothing puts a smile on a consumer's face quicker than a good peach.” And it turns out, flipping produce can be quite the profitable side hustle! ($3000 in one weekend from one stand before we recorded.) Shannon Houchin reached out to me and said, "Nick, you've got episodes on flipping books, mattresses, clearance products, domain names, flea market finds, and a ton of other stuff — but have I got a side hustle for you: I flip peaches." So, of course, I had to call her up to learn more. Turns out Shannon has been doing this for 10 years and has scaled up to 100 roadside stands at once. Whether you're looking for a way to make extra money on the weekend, or to scale to something larger, Shannon has a compelling case for starting a roadside produce stand.
