Electric companies partner with technology companies to find solutions that help them deliver reliable and resilient clean energy to customers. On today's episode, we hear about WEC Energy Group and Wärtsilä partnership to test a Wärtsilä engine that is designed to run on a hydrogen fuel blend at one of WEC Energy's power plants in Michigan. Dan Krueger, Executive Vice President of Infrastructure and Generation Planning at WEC Energy Group; Todd Duffield, Market Strategist at WEC Energy Group; and Jon Rodriguez, Energy Business Director of Engine Power Plants at Wärtsilä, discuss the companies' hydrogen blending test and how engine power plants can help the energy sector reduce carbon emissions. This episode is sponsored by Wärtsilä; learn more about their engine power plant solutions here.
In this episode of the Insiders Guide to Energy podcast, hosts Chris Sass and Jeff McAulay explore the role of reciprocating engines in the global energy transition. Jon Rodriguez, Energy Business Director at Wärtsilä North America, shares valuable insights into how these large-scale engines are being used to support the shift from traditional base-load power to renewable energy sources. As renewables like solar and wind continue to grow, the need for flexible, dispatchable technologies that can fill in the gaps becomes essential, and reciprocating engines are perfectly suited for this task. Jon explains how Wärtsilä's engines are already widely used in places like the Caribbean and how they are now being increasingly adopted in developed countries like the United States and Europe. With the ability to burn a variety of fuels—from traditional heavy fuel oil and natural gas to future alternatives like hydrogen and ammonia—these engines offer a versatile and future-proof solution for balancing intermittent renewable energy. They allow power grids to maintain reliability even when renewable sources aren't available, making them a key player in modern energy systems. The conversation also touches on the innovations in engine design, including advanced fuel-flexibility and emissions control. Jon discusses how these engines are being deployed in data centers, industrial applications, and even as a hedge against price volatility in energy markets. With a focus on scalability and rapid deployment, reciprocating engines are proving to be a critical component in the path toward a decarbonized and resilient energy grid. Kevin Bosson spent the winter of 2013-2014 in Perth Australia with the South Perth Cubs living the dream and playing against the likes of IBC podcast episode 27 guest Jon Rodriguez and the Rockingham Rams. Right off the bat Kevin reaffirms what Jon said in episode 27, that the baseball in the Western Australian State League is quite high and more than one might expect. He also shares a comparison between the baseball in Western Australia to the ball in other parts of Australia where close friends of his have played. This can shed some light on those who seeking to play the strongest level of baseball possible in the land down under. Kevin provides info on compensation as pro player, visas, the baseball schedule and the unreal lifestyle off the field.
Jon Rodriguez at only 27 had the experience of a lifetime in the winter of 2013-2014 as the head coach of the Rockingham Rams in beautiful Perth, Australia. Fresh off of this experience and back in California for the interview, you can hear the energy in Jon's voice when telling his story. If this interview doesn't get you fired up to take your career overseas, you need to take up badminton or something. Jon explains that Western Australian baseball is so big, that his club and the others in the league are so large, that there are three different levels of men's baseball within each club. State league baseball is the top level next to the Australian Baseball League , and below that is AAA and then AA. The beauty of it, they welcome imports at all levels! The Rams had five imports for this past season but not all were paid the full package, however all were minimally set up with a place to stay and a job. What I love the most about this interview is Jon's ability to paint a story about baseball in Australia when he goes into detail about the family atmosphere and the lifestyle that comes with a gig in Perth.
