In today's episode, we're exploring intimacy - a concept that's far more complex than most of us realize. My guest, Erin Moniz, has been studying how we connect, disconnect, and misunderstand relationships in our current cultural moment. We'll dig into some critical questions: What does intimacy actually mean beyond romantic relationships? How have cultural messages - both inside and outside the church - distorted our understanding of connection? And what might a more holistic approach to knowing and being known look like? Erin brings a unique perspective as a college chaplain who's counseled countless emerging adults navigating relationships. We'll discuss how technology impacts our connections, why friendships matter as much as romantic partnerships, and how the gospel offers a different framework for understanding human relationships. This isn't a prescriptive how-to conversation, but an exploration of our fundamental human need for genuine connection. We'll challenge some assumptions about singleness, marriage, and community, and hopefully provide a more nuanced view of intimacy. So join us.Rev. Erin F. Moniz (DMin, Trinity School for Ministry) is a deacon in the Anglican Church in North America and associate chaplain and director for chapel at Baylor University, where she disciples emerging adults and journeys with them toward healthy, gospel-centered relationships. She is a trained conciliator, mediator, and conflict coach. She enjoys content creation, playing music, being outdoors, and narrating the inner monologue of her two cats. We welcome the amazing Cindy Calder to the show! Cindy moved to Greece with her parents and two brothers in 1965. Her father was a US diplomat and Greek specialist stationed in Athens and Thessaloniki during various postings from 1963-1980. She attended elementary and high school at the American Community School in Athens. After leaving Greece to attend Dartmouth College, Cindy worked for 10 years as an international banker with many clients based in Greece. After leaving banking, Cindy began a second career as a translator and teacher on her way to earning a Master's Degree in Classics from Columbia University. In 2012, Cindy founded Calder Classics to bring high school students beginning and advanced programming in Greek and Latin and the art, history, and literature associated with ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Her founding principle is that the study of the Classics, when combined with first-hand engagement with art, history, literature, and modern culture, enriches students' academic experience and encourages adults to reconnect with the joys of learning. At Calder Classics, mixing students of all ages and backgrounds in a shared learning environment has proven intellectually stimulating in wonderfully unexpected ways. Cindy taught Latin at the Trinity School, the Brearley School, and Saint Joseph High School in New York City, and has led many ancient Greek and Latin courses for Calder Classics in-person, online, and in one-on-one tutoring. Over the years her students have gone on to impressive and diverse academic and professional careers. She is on the Board of the Calder Classics Scholarship Fund which raises money to fund tuition and travel expenses for inner city students to attend her programs. Cindy lives with her husband in Massachusetts and is the mother of four grown children. Our guest today is Andrew Zwerneman. Andrew J. Zwerneman serves as President and Master Teacher at Cana Academy. For 40 years, he has taught and consulted in secondary schools that emphasize classic humanities. You're going to love this conversation! *** We are pleased to announce that registration for our annual Spring Training Sessions are now open! In fact, one reason why we asked Andrew to be here today is because we hired him as this year's coach. Andrew is going to teach two sessions on history as a classical subject. The first session will help us get away from Marxism and adopt a classical view of history. The second session will offer us a method for teaching history. It's going to be so great! MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Dec 1st Publish Date: Nov 30th Commercial: Henssler :15 From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Friday, December 1st and Happy 77th Birthday to actress Bette Midler. ***12.01.23 - BIRTHDAY - BETTE MILDER*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia 26-Year-Old Killed in Cumberland Hotel Shooting Tuesday Cobb Commission OKs $1.6 Million for 2025 MLB All-Star Game 'It's not a fee, it's a tax': Republican Commissioners Oppose Stormwater Fee Plus, Keith Ippolito's conversation with Angie Clawson Director of Communications from the Salvation Army. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: ESOG STORY 1: 26-Year-Old Killed in Cumberland Hotel Shooting Tuesday A 26-year-old man, Demarcus Watson, was killed in a shooting at a Cumberland hotel in Cobb County. The incident occurred around 11:45 a.m. at the Budgetel Inns and Suites. Officers responded to reports of a person shot and found Watson with a gunshot wound. Despite attempts at lifesaving measures, he did not survive. The police suspect foul play, and no suspect has been identified yet. Watson's next of kin has been notified. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Cobb County Police Tip Hotline at 770-499-4111. STORY 2: Cobb Commission OKs $1.6 Million for 2025 MLB All-Star Game The Cobb Board of Commissioners voted 5-0 to approve $1.6 million for security and related expenses for hosting the 2025 MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park. The funding, part of the county's 2025 budget, includes $785,000 for overtime for police officers, firefighters, and 911 operators. The remaining $800,000 will cover security and traffic equipment, planning, training programs, and meals for staff. The decision comes two years after MLB withdrew the 2021 All-Star Game from Truist Park in response to Georgia's voting law. Cobb Chairwoman Lisa Cupid expressed appreciation for the opportunity to host the event again. STORY 3: 'It's not a fee, it's a tax': Republican Commissioners Oppose Stormwater Fee Cobb Commissioner Keli Gambrill reiterated her opposition to a proposed stormwater utility fee, characterizing it as a tax without direct benefits. Cobb Water System Director Judy Jones presented details of the proposed fee, which would fund stormwater maintenance and improvements. The fee, based on impervious surface area, would result in modest increases for most residences but substantial ones for large businesses. Gambrill argued that the fee does not address existing staffing shortages and criticized the approval of a 24-inch pipe that redirected stormwater onto another resident's property. Commissioner JoAnn Birrell also opposed the fee, linking it to ongoing revenue transfers to the county's general fund. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. The festivities included the lighting of a giant tree, Santa's arrival on an aerial platform, and group photos with Santa in a large sleigh. Multiple school choruses and musical groups contributed to the holiday spirit. The addition of a Kris Kringle Market with various vendors offering unique gifts enhanced the celebration. STORY 5: Mableton Council to Vote On Transitional Budget The Mableton City Council is set to vote on a voluntary transitional spending plan for the city, covering December 2023 to June 2024. Elizabeth Tomlin and Professor Catherine Cavadini share a conversation about a new family book, Saints: A Family Story, that she co-authored with her Father Professor John Cavadini of the University of Notre Dame. In this episode we talk about ways that Katie's family has integrated the saints and the Catholic faith into their family - through a habit of prayer, storytelling, and reading. The book arose from John sending “coupons” to his grandchildren during the pandemic, on which they could request a story of saint. John began writing saint stories to his grandchildren, and together, John and Katie compiled this collection of saint stories to share more broadly. Saints is gorgeously illustrated by Tess Cassady in a way that brings each of these saints to life and invites reader to imagine these holy people are our family members – because they are. Dr. John Cavadini is Professor of Theology and Director of the McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame. John's work as a theologian arises from his love for the Church Fathers, especially St. Augustine. It is increasingly difficult to find students at the collegiate level who know how to engage in spirited, rigorous, but amiable debate about important matters. Grandstanding, emotive outbursts calculated to silence opposition, and the recitation of prefabricated talking points mark much of the environment. Rather than seeking to expose the truth, much of what counts for debate is actually aimed at domination and manifests an unhealthy conformance to the reigning ideas of a school of thought or a political activist agenda. A proper training from a younger age in the art of seminar discussion would help contemporary college students navigate the choppy waters of young adulthood. This talk addressed how those of us who teach secondary students can create environments free, curious, and open for seminar discussions. It will address the goals of a seminar; the necessary habits and tools for a fruitful discussion; and common mistakes that spoil a seminar.Andrew J. This week, The Rev. Dr. Bryan Hollon, Dean President of Trinity School for Ministry, preaches on the book of Matthew
At its best, teaching history helps our students recover their bearings in a world that increasingly makes it difficult to see and love the life we have together. Like being and nature, history is a concept of unity by which we get our minds around the whole of things: in this case, the whole of our existence as the past, the present, and the future. As a discipline within the humanities, history is the study of change in society as it moves in time. Change is a given, not an end. In order to grasp the significance of change, students of history must see the past in its pastness, neither as the present writ small nor as the occasion to condemn the past for not rising to their demands for what it should have been. In other words, they need to study the past observationally and sympathetically, free from anachronisms and moralizing. Finally, history is a way of interpreting our existence as a community that consists of the dead, the living, and the yet to be born. It is a way of seeing how we are responsible for one another across generations. To forget that unity is to lose ourselves. To remember it is to see ourselves as recipients of the life passed on by our forebears and as givers of life to our neighbors and to future generations.Andrew J. Zwerneman serves as Cana Academy's President and as one of our Master Teachers. For 39 years, he has taught and consulted in secondary schools that emphasize classic humanities. This week, we're wrapping up our time in the Sermon on the Mount – a part of scripture that is rich, profound, and full of depths to plumb. In a world that can make us feel ambivalent, this is what Jesus wants us to know about following him. WHAT DOES IT SAY? Our verses this week are Matthew 7:13-14: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Is this a passage about salvation? How do I know if I have found the road? This passage lends itself to a lot of questions. WHAT'S THE BACKSTORY? Psalm 1 – Jesus is bringing us back to this psalm – we can see how this sermon might be an expounding on this Psalm. Deuteronomy 30:19 – “I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse, therefore choose life…” Jesus would be speaking to people who understand the law and sets up two choices just like this verse does, blessings vs curses. WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Our fruit is evidence of our salvation or lack thereof. Success is not the same as fruit. The unsparkly faithfulness and obedience are what looks like attractive fruit to him. WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR ME? Are you bearing fruit for the kingdom? Not the fruits of this world (success, wealth, fame) but the steady persevering fruit that makes you planted like a strong, sturdy oak tree. Are you bearing the aroma of Christ? Are people drawn to Christ because of you? If you feel like you are incapable of doing this, you might be just where God wants you. The invitation is generous and inclusive – anyone who comes to me, Jesus says – will have eternal life. ABOUT RACHEL: Rev.
