A dance class can be a mirror or a wall, and too many families know what it feels like to be shut out. We sit down with filmmaker and former dancer Dan Watt to unpack how his Emmy-winning documentary Everybody Dance came to life, why he searched for months to find the right inclusive ballet school, and what “access” looks like when it's built into the culture instead of bolted on at the end. Dan walks us through the choices that shape ethical disability representation in film: earning trust slowly, showing up consistently, and letting disabled kids and their parents tell their stories in their own words and on their own timeline. We get specific about consent and autonomy in documentary filmmaking, including how he checks with families during editing when a moment feels vulnerable, and why some scenes deserve to stay because they reflect real communication and support for nonverbal autistic dancers. We also talk about the nuts and bolts of inclusion in arts education: adapting cues for different learning styles, respecting sensory needs, and using simple structures that guide behavior without punishment. Along the way, we explore the ripple effects that matter most, like confidence, social connection, and the way volunteers and students build a community where differences stop being the headline and shared purpose takes over. If you care about inclusive dance, accessible performing arts, autism and the arts, or how to center disabled voices in media, this conversation will give you both inspiration and practical ideas. This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, we're deep in the 1-to-2 kid transition and debating the question everyone has opinions on: is the biggest life shift going from 0–1 kids, 1–2 kids, or 2+ kids? We get into what actually feels different this time around, what we weirdly care less about, and why confidence the second time somehow still leads to reorganizing half the house (yes sorry we're still on this topic - WE HAVE UPDATES!) We kick things off with a mommy & me dance class announcement (MELT), argue (bicker but not bicker of the week) about the best Olympic sport, and Harrison makes a strong case for why cookbooks deserve a comeback in 2026 (I feel like I'm still good with google???). Then we get into life with a 16-month-old who has officially become a food critic, the one grocery item we cannot keep stocked, and the recipes currently saving us (ps. COMMENT: Toddler friendly recipes - we are still ISO new ones to try please!!!!). From there, we explain why we're ACTUALLY changing the kids' rooms (I guess we never told you guys lol), recap Tate's first night in her big girl room (shockingly smooth), and share what we're buying for the playroom (plus the one thing we're absolutely SKIPPING). We also spiral into learning that moms can apparently catch their own babies (hard no for me), admit we've changed our minds on a former “must-have” product, and confirm that toddlers humble you daily (in general lol). Naturally, we end with the important stuff: whether Zoom calls at coffee shops are socially acceptable, if treadmill miles count as real miles (will this be the new listening vs. reading??), why patterned couches might be an elite parenting hack, and whether admin nights are the future of adult friendships. Plus: mahjong with mom friends - and absolute MUST. LOVE YOU GUYS (thank you for listening!!!!!) In continuation of our celebration of Autistic voices, we're diving deep into the world of dance and neurodiversity with Amanda Trisdale and Leta Rundell, the dynamic duo behind the Autistic Wings Dance Company. Right off the bat, they tackle how traditional dance environments often fall short for autistic kids, leaving them feeling sidelined and misunderstood. Amanda shares her personal journey, revealing how her own experiences with autism shaped the way they run their dance studio—where inclusivity is not just a buzzword, but the very foundation. With a maximum of four students per class, they're flipping the script on what dance can be, ensuring each child gets the personalized attention they deserve. So, whether you're a dance enthusiast or just curious about fostering an inclusive space, this episode is packed with insights, stories, and a sprinkle of inspiration that you won't want to miss!As I chat with Amanda Trisdale and Leta Rundell, the founders of Autistic Wings Dance Company, I'm struck by the sheer determination that went into making their dream a reality. Their journey began with the simple act of dance—specifically, tap dancing—when Amanda's daughter Leta found her groove. Initially, it was a joyous discovery, but soon Amanda faced the harsh reality of a dance world that often overlooks the needs of autistic children. With teachers who didn't quite understand Leta's behaviors and struggles, it became clear that the traditional studios weren't cutting it. This led to a pivotal moment that drove them to create an entirely new space dedicated to nurturing autistic talent. In our conversation, we delve into the philosophy behind Autistic Wings. The focus here is not just on dance, but on creating a community where autistic dancers can express themselves freely. By limiting class sizes to four students, they ensure that every child receives the attention and support they need to flourish. It's fascinating how Amanda explains that many existing dance classes, even those labeled as “autistic,” often fail to accommodate the full spectrum of needs within the community. Their approach is refreshingly unique, rooted in understanding and compassion, which is the backbone of their teaching methods. We share a few laughs as they recount some of the more humorous challenges of teaching dance to kids who might interpret rules a little differently—like turning a dance move into a personal expression of joy!Wrapping up, we discuss the future goals of the company, which include expanding their reach and encouraging other dance studios to adopt similar inclusive practices. The conversation leaves listeners feeling inspired and motivated to support such necessary changes in the arts community. I walk away with a heart full of hope, knowing that with leaders like Amanda and Leta, the dance world is slowly becoming a place where every child can find their rhythm and shine.Takeaways: Creating a dance studio specifically for autistic kids allows for a tailored approach that traditional studios often overlook, making dance accessible and enjoyable. The journey of building Autistic Wings Dance Company highlights the importance of understanding neurodiversity through a community-driven lens, rather than a 'one-size-fits-all' method. Having classes with a maximum of four students ensures that each child receives individualized attention, promoting a supportive environment that nurtures their unique talents. The founders' determination to create a safe space for autistic dancers stems from personal experiences, demonstrating how advocacy can transform lives and foster community. It's vital to eliminate misconceptions about autism in dance education; understanding that each autistic individual has different needs can create a more inclusive atmosphere. The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, proving that...
it felt so good to be back in dance class today. Yesterday when I was having a conversation with a friend I told her that dance class is better than traditional physical therapy. I still love my PT team but I also fully stand by my statement ☺️☺️

Hello! We're back from our summer recess which means we have more episodes to come for the rest of the 2024 year! For today's episode, Hannah sits down with Austin, Texas filmmaker Maggie Bailey, discussing her 2022 dance documentary, Moving Together. This particular doc is something I myself (Hannah), have not seen in the dance documentary mode. What made this movie really stand out from others is that the story blends a soothing balance of cinematic movement that we commonly see in screendance, but then pairing those vignettes with gentle interview voiceover. Overall, Maggie guides viewers on a weaving journey between the relationship of music and dance through the lens of 6 collaborators who approach the art form in their own way.In this interview, we learn about Maggie's technical process for making Moving Together and dive into some of the elements that make this movie extra special. –Moving Together loglineMoving Together explores the intimacy of collaboration between musicians and dancers in Flamenco, Modern, and New Orleans Second Line in both performance and class environments. As artists, we collaborate with other disciplines consistently, but what pulls us back to specific people for collaboration? This feature length, performative documentary investigates the relationships between Michael Wall, modern dance accompanist and composer, and Jesse Zaritt, dancer and choreographer; Olivia and Isai Chacon, a Flamenco dancer and Spanish guitarist; and New Orleans natives Michelle N. Gibson, cultural ambassador, choreographer, performer, and Thaddeus Ford, sixth generation Trumpet player. –Follow and get in touch with Maggie Baileywww.maggiembailey.com@maggiembailey @movingtogetherfilm– Got a question? I am Jane Hogan, the Wellness Engineer, and the host of Wellness By Design. I spent 30 years designing foundations for buildings until the pain and inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis led me to hang up my hard hat and follow my heart. Now I blend my backgrounds in science and spirituality to teach people how to tap into the power of their mind, body and soul. I help them release pain naturally so they can become the best version of themselves. Wellness By Design is a show dedicated to helping people achieve wellness not by reacting to the world around them but by intentionally designing a life based on what their own body needs. In this show we explore practices, methods and science that contribute to releasing pain and inflammation naturally. Sarah had an unusual live comedy experience at the Demetri Martin special taping, and it took her back to her Real World days. She claims she did badly in her hip hop dance class despite being in the "top 25% of dancers." We learn about Sarah's traumatic and morbid Coachella experience, and we can't believe she's never shared this story before. We are fuming about the men who thought they should destroy a national monument by pushing rocks that are millions of years old off a cliff. A company is marketing weight loss drugs to men, and the difference between the ways they market to women are fascinating. Sarah tells us how someone stole rare bird feathers from a natural history museum to make fancy fly fishing flies, and it is one of the biggest "heists" in history. But the real take away from this episode is that Susie should probably not have wine during recordings because she cannot (!) stop laughing.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSusie on X: https://www.x.com/susie_meisterSarah on X: https://www.x.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:Get 20% off your first order when you go to https://www.liquid-iv.com and use code CANDY at checkout! To get Naked Wines' 6 bottle for $39.99 offer, head to https://nakedwines.com/BRAINCANDY and use code BRAINCANDY for both the code AND password!Get 20% OFF @honeylove by going to https://honeylove.com/BRAINCANDY! #honeylovepodSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
