‘I think I've found postpartum harder to manage in terms of my diabetes than actual pregnancy, but I'm literally living my best life as a mum.' That sentence is pretty reflective of Emily Vilé's philosophy on type 1 diabetes - not shying away from the realities of the condition she's lived with since she was just 14 months old, but soaking up all the moments that feel even sweeter for the juggle. This practical outlook can also be seen in the powerful content Emily posts about motherhood and life in Perth, Australia, as well as in her work as Project Lead for Perth Diabetes Care Mums & Bumps at the Perth Diabetes Care Health Hub to support mums to be who live with diabetes - a career shift that came about after she gave birth to her daughter in July 2024. In this heartfelt episode, Emily talks all things pregnancy and type 1 diabetes, as well as the recent OCD diagnosis that has helped her to make sense of her life to date. From careful planning, to adapting to changing insulin needs and strict glucose targets, managing a classroom of teenagers while pregnant to managing blood sugars during birth itself, Emily naturally dealt with a number of fears in her pregnancy journey, but with the help of an amazing inner circle, overcoming these challenges have made for some of her proudest achievements - not to mention life as mum to gorgeous Gia! A beautiful episode with plenty of giggles along the way - I hope you enjoy this chat as much as I did. CONNECT WITH EMILYFollow Emily on Instagram.Connect with PDC Mums and Bumps on Instagram.Join their Facebook community.JOIN THE TYPE 1 ON 1 INSTAGRAM COMMUNITYCome and say hi @studiotype1on1 on Instagram. SPONSOR MESSAGE  This episode of Type 1 on 1 is sponsored by Insulet, the makers of Omnipod tube-free insulin pump therapy. Using Omnipod 5 Automated Insulin Delivery has improved my diabetes management significantly with less diabetes decisions, and of course no multiple daily injections.  How? The Nightmare Sequence, featuring poetry by Omar and illustrations by Safdar, is a searing response to the atrocities committed by Israel and its allies in Gaza and beyond since October 2023. Born of collective suffering and despair, the book interrogates the position of witness: the terrible and helpless distance of vision, the impact of being exposed to violence of this scale on a daily basis, and what it means to live in a society that is actively participating in the catastrophic destruction of Arabs and Muslims overseas.  Omar is a poet and writer born in Western Sydney to Lebanese and Turkish Muslim migrants. He is the acclaimed author of the novel Son of Sin and three poetry collections, including The Lost Arabs, which won the 2020 Prime Minister's Literary Award for Poetry. Safdar Ahmed is an award-winning artist, writer, musician and cultural worker. The Future of Education Now 2025 (#FOEN25) festival, held at WAB from March 13 to 15, brought together students, educators, parents, and thought leaders to explore the evolving landscape of education (add link). In this special episode of the WAB Podcast, we have a recording from a very special panel from FOEN25. Moderated by Stephen Taylor, WAB's Director of Innovation in Learning and Teaching, this conversation was joined by three WAB students: Ryan from Grade 10 and Cali and Hannah from Grade 11, and global education leaders including:    Jason Cummings, Director of Member Engagement of Mastery Transcript Consortium (MTC)  Ellen Heyting, Project Lead for International Networks and Credentialing from Melbourne Metrics  Trillium Hibben, Director of Commission on International Education at New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)  Jane Larsson, Executive Director of the Council of International Schools (CIS)  Angela Meikle, Global Head of Private IB Schools of International Baccalaureate (IB)  Together, the panel explored how education is evolving beyond traditional assessments, emphasizing competency-based learning and the recognition of student-driven achievements. Speakers highlighted how new tools and approaches are providing a more holistic view of student progress, moving beyond grades to assess real-world skills and competencies. Schools and universities are shifting towards formative, competency-based assessments that allow students to showcase not just what they know, but what they can do.  Students shared how their projects—ranging from scientific research to organizing student-led initiatives—illustrate the impact of hands-on, real-world learning. Their experiences underscored how students thrive when given opportunities to apply their knowledge beyond the classroom. The discussion also emphasized the need for new ways to credential essential skills such as collaboration, ethical decision-making, and leadership.  Another key theme was the increasing role of student voices in shaping education. Schools and organizations are moving towards more collaborative models, ensuring that students are active participants in designing their learning experiences. Accreditation processes are also evolving, focusing more on the impact of education rather than compliance, to better support students in a rapidly changing world.  As the session concluded, the panelists expressed optimism about the future of education, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between schools, universities, and accreditation bodies to create learning environments that develop both knowledge and essential competencies. To hear the full discussion, tune in to this extra special episode of the WAB Podcast.

In the past few months Darren has been teaching his elective undergraduate course, Power and Influence in World Politics (POLS2136) at ANU. This year, he has grappled with the impact of Donald Trump's re-election, and what it signifies for how power will be accumulated and wielded in the future. Remember, Trump's core critique of the Biden Administration was weakness – so presumably Trump plans to show us strength. Does that mean America can be more ‘powerful', or will the result actually be the opposite? And Australia's deals with PNG and Nauru this month illustrate how far Australia has come in exercising power and influence in recent years. Hervé Lemahieu and Susannah Patton of the Lowy Institute in Sydney join Darren for a conversation about power.  Hervé is Lowy's Director of Research and Susannah the Director of the Southeast Asia Program and Project Lead for Lowy's Asia Power Index, which Hervé first developed in 2018. Who better to have a conversation with about power, what it is, how we measure it, and how the forces that have given us Trump, or perhaps Trump himself, might require is to reassess how we conceive of power in world politics into the future. Australia in the World is written, hosted, and produced by Darren Lim, with research and editing this episode by Walter Colnaghi and theme music composed by Rory Stenning. Send me a messageIn this episode of the Climate Confident podcast, I'm joined by John Lang, Project Lead at the Net Zero Tracker and a leading figure in the fight for transparency and accountability in climate action. Together, we explore the complexities behind net zero commitments and unpack what's needed to transform promises into meaningful results.John explains the work of the Net Zero Tracker, which monitors over 4,000 entities worldwide—including countries, companies, cities, and regions—on their progress (or lack thereof) towards achieving net zero. He sheds light on a troubling reality: while ambition is on the rise, integrity is still lagging behind. Shockingly, only 1 in 20 entities meet the minimum procedural requirements for credible net zero targets. We also delve into the role of subnational governments—regions and cities—in driving climate action, particularly in the face of national inaction. John outlines how aligning local and national policies (what he calls "vertical governance") and fostering ambition loops can accelerate progress.A key takeaway from this episode is the persistent confusion around net zero standards, which allows some entities to hide behind weak targets. John stresses the urgent need for standardisation and convergence, which could close the gaps in accountability. Finally, we discuss practical ways individuals can make a difference, from talking about climate change to pushing for systemic change, whether through politics or their personal spheres of influence. This conversation is a compelling reminder of the challenges we face, but also the power of collective action in moving the needle on climate goals.Have a listen, and let's keep this vital conversation going!Support the showPodcast supportersI'd like to sincerely thank this podcast's amazing supporters: Lorcan Sheehan Jerry Sweeney Andreas Werner Stephen Carroll Roger Arnold And remember you too can Support the Podcast - it is really easy and hugely important as it will enable me to continue to create more excellent Climate Confident episodes like this one.ContactIf you have any comments/suggestions or questions for the podcast - get in touch via direct message on Twitter/LinkedIn. Grassroots projects like Scotland's Love Letham and Johannesburg's Makers Valley, which focus on sustainable development, community engagement, and empowerment naturally emphasize the importance of inclusivity, indigenous values, and collective action in addressing socioeconomic and environmental challenges. Our expert guests in this episode demonstrate how in both the Global South and North, participatory decision-making and community-driven projects can tackle poverty, improve health, and enhance urban resilience by integrating climate and anti-poverty policies.Image Credit: Photo by Jeswin Thomas @Unsplash Featured guests:Thobile Chittenden is Network Co-Lead at the Wellbeing Economy Alliance and the CEO of the Makers Valley Partnership in Johannesburg, South Africa.Hollie Irvine is the Project Lead of Love Letham in Perth, Scotland - one of four Wellbeing Economy pilot city projects from the Wellbeing Economy Alliance (WEAll).LinksLessons in Wellbeing Economics: Engaging local communities to bring Academic Principles into Urban Practice - Episode 12, Season 3, Cities 1.5 Policy Design for a Wellbeing Economy - Lessons from Four City Pilots - The Journal of City Climate Policy & Economy, Volume 2 Issue 2, January 2024Wellbeing Economy AllianceMakers Valley A New Story Unfolds - Poem by Thobile ChittendenLove Letham Project - Perth, ScotlandOfficial child poverty statistics - Child Poverty Action Group (Scotland)New report shows what Letham's children need to thrive - Love Letham websiteIf you want to learn more about the Journal of City Climate Policy and Economy, please visit our website: https://jccpe.utpjournals.press/Cities 1.5 is a podcast by University of Toronto Press and is produced in association with the Journal of City Climate Policy and Economy. The conversation revolved around the nuances of developing and deploying large language models (LLMs) in the field of cybersecurity.Steve Wilson's expertise lies at the intersection of AI and cybersecurity, a point he emphasized while sharing his journey from founding the Top 10 group for large language models to authoring his new book, "The Developer's Playbook for Large Language Model Security." In this insightful discussion, Wilson and Martin explore the roles of developers and product managers in ensuring the safety and security of AI systems. One of the key themes in the conversation is the categorization of AI applications into chatbots, co-pilots, and autonomous agents. Wilson explains that while chatbots are open-ended, interacting with users on various topics, co-pilots focus on enhancing productivity within specific domains by interacting with user data. Autonomous agents are more independent, executing tasks with minimal human intervention.Wilson brings attention to the concept of overreliance on AI models and the associated risks. Highlighting that large language models can hallucinate or produce unreliable outputs, he stresses the importance of designing systems that account for these limitations. Product managers play a crucial role here, ensuring that AI applications are built to mitigate risks and communicate their reliability to users effectively. The discussion also touches on the importance of security guardrails and continuous monitoring. Wilson introduces the idea of using tools akin to web app firewalls (WAF) or runtime application self-protection (RASP) to keep AI models within safe operational parameters. He mentions frameworks like Nvidia's open-source project, Nemo Guardrails, which aid developers in implementing these defenses. Moreover, the conversation highlights the significance of testing and evaluation in AI development. Wilson parallels the education and evaluation of LLMs to training and testing a human-like system, underscoring that traditional unit tests may not suffice. Instead, flexible test cases and advanced evaluation tools are necessary. Another critical aspect Wilson discusses is the need for red teaming in AI security. By rigorously testing AI systems and exploring their vulnerabilities, organizations can better prepare for real-world threats. This proactive approach is essential for maintaining robust AI applications. Finally, Wilson shares insights from his book, including the Responsible AI Software Engineering (RAISE) framework. This comprehensive guide offers developers and product managers practical steps to integrate secure AI practices into their workflows. With an emphasis on continuous improvement and risk management, the RAISE framework serves as a valuable resource for anyone involved in AI development.About the BookLarge language models (LLMs) are not just shaping the trajectory of AI, they're also unveiling a new era of security challenges. This practical book takes you straight to the heart of these threats. Author Steve Wilson, chief product officer at Exabeam, focuses exclusively on LLMs, eschewing generalized AI security to delve into the unique characteristics and vulnerabilities inherent in these models.Complete with collective wisdom gained from the creation of the OWASP Top 10 for LLMs list—a feat accomplished by more than 400 industry experts—this guide delivers real-world guidance and practical strategies to help developers and security teams grapple with the realities of LLM applications. TLDR - Exploring conflict and trust in DAOs and decentralized communitiesFor episode 4 of the Impact on Optimism miniseries, we're excited to welcome Juan Carlos Bell, Project Lead at Gravity DAO, a conflict management DAO that offers alternative dispute resolution and community building services for web3 projects. We'll explore the origins of Gravity DAO, dive into the unique challenges DAOs face when it comes to conflict resolution, and learn more about the services they offer to help Web3 projects foster trust and resolve disputes. Juan will also share insights into their experience receiving funding through Optimism's RetroPGF and how Web3 can help advance conflict management as a public good.--Key Takeaways--One of the foundations of Web3 is this idea of trustlessness. However, behind every DAO is people, and the community needs to trust in the reputation of DAO members, especially those in leadership positions. As such, it's important to focus on activities to intentionally foster trust within your decentralized community. When compared to traditional organizations, DAOs have added layers of complexity that come with tokens, online communications, and collaboration digitally across borders. With this added complexity comes unique conflict management challenges. DAOs are still very new, so we are still figuring out and experimenting with conflict management, and it's important for DAO leaders to take regular temp checks in their communities. Many Web3 projects rely solely on grants in the early days, but grants can be very time consuming and unreliable. Optimism's RetroPGF, on the other hand, gives projects an opportunity to focus on building, rather than seeking out funding. This was essential in helping Gravity DAO grow and succeed. If you are in a Web3 community experiencing conflict, reach out to Juan and the Gravity DAO team for support!--Full shownotes with links available at--https://www.cryptoaltruism.org/blog/crypto-altruism-podcast-impact-on-optimism-episode-4-gravity-dao-resolving-conflict-and-building-trust-in-web3-communities

The discussion, as you might guess, centers on the OWASP Top 10 list for Large Language Models (LLMs) and the security challenges associated with these technologies. Wilson highlights the growing relevance of AppSec, particularly with the surge in interest in AI and LLMs.The conversation kicks off with an exploration of the LLM project that Wilson has been working on at OWASP, aimed at presenting an update on the OWASP Top 10 for LLMs. Wilson emphasizes the significance of prompt injection attacks, one of the key concerns on the OWASP list. He explains how attackers can craft prompts to manipulate LLMs into performing unintended actions, a tactic reminiscent of the SQL injection attacks that have plagued traditional software for years. This serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance in the development and deployment of LLMs.Supply chain risks are another critical issue discussed. Wilson draws parallels to the Log4j incident, stressing that the AI software supply chain is currently a weak link. With the rapid growth of platforms like Hugging Face, the provenance of AI models and training datasets becomes a significant concern. Ensuring the integrity and security of these components is paramount to building robust AI-driven systems. The notion of excessive agency is also explored—a concept that relates to the permissions and responsibilities assigned to LLMs. Wilson underscores the importance of limiting the scope of LLMs to prevent misuse or unauthorized actions. This point resonates with traditional security principles like least privilege but is recontextualized for the AI age. Overreliance on LLMs is another topic Martin and Wilson discuss. The conversation touches on how people can place undue trust in AI outputs, leading to potentially hazardous outcomes. Ensuring users understand the limitations and potential inaccuracies of LLM-generated content is essential for safe and effective AI utilization.Wilson also provides a preview of his upcoming session at the OWASP AppSec Global event, where he plans to share insights from the ongoing work on the 2.0 version of the OWASP Top 10 for LLMs. This next iteration will address how the field has matured and new security considerations that have emerged since the initial list.Be sure to follow our Coverage Journey and subscribe to our podcasts!____________________________This Episode's SponsorsAre you interested in sponsoring our event coverage with an ad placement in the podcast?Learn More
