Today is episode 100 with my very own running coach and elite marathoner Jonny Mellor. Jonny is a 2:09 marathoner and 10th fastest Briton of all time. He was 2020 British marathon champion and the winner of the 2022 Manchester marathon. He has also been my coach for over 4 years. On this episode, we talk about Jonny's career, insights into how he races and trains for marathons, elite tips for everyday marathoners as well as fitting everything around a young family and running a coaching business. You can follow Jonny and JM coaching on instagram and the website: https://www.instagram.com/jm_run_coaching/ https://www.jmcoaching.co.uk/ Thank you so much for your support over the first 100 episodes and here's to the next 100!
Something fundamental but often overlooked that helps me to perform in my own running is my support network - especially my inner circle. Louise and the kids are my biggest cheerleaders but I also have my coach Jonny Mellor, my Dad and brothers and am lucky to have lots of running friends, clients and podcast listeners that push me on too. In this episode, I explore why it's important to have a strong circle and the concepts of 'the sum of the 5 people you spend most time with' and 'plus, equals, minus' - surrounding yourself with teachers, peers and students. If you want to improve in your next race and want personalised help in training, nutrition and mindset designed to get you faster, further and stronger straight away, message me at www.instagram.com/therunningrules or see www.therunningrules.com/coaching
In this bonus episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Jonny Mellor (@JonnyMellorArt) who is showing in the New Art Fair 2024, at the Truman Brewery, London, from 27-29 September 2024I am an artist strongly influenced by minimalism and geometric abstraction. I use this visual language to create paintings, prints and hand cut paper art . The exploration of colour, process, materials, space and form are central to my practice.I am interested in taking forms, shapes and patterns and combining these with carefully considered colour combinations. I am continually striving to achieve balance and harmony within my works composition and colour pallet.Amongst the barrage of visual stimulation and the overall increasingly chaoticness of life, minimalist art is at rest, creating a quiet harmony and balance which offers the viewer a space of calmness and contemplation. How great a transformation is available for all who believe in Jesus! We see the greatest rags to riches story can be ours through him.
In the midst of a catalogue of errors from those speaking with Jesus, we see the crucial need to see beyond appearances, under the surface, and consider the reality of God in all things.
Join Tom O'Toole from The Broadcast Network in conversation with Jonny Mellor, leader of Sputnik: Faith + Arts, as they talk about his new course, 'Releasing Artists to Renew Culture', on The Broadcast Network. To find out more about Sputnik, you can head to their website:
Jonny shares phenomenally honestly about his own experiences of doubt, including a crisis of faith in recent years. What do we do when we experience huge doubts in our walk with God? This passage and Jonny's story are sent to help us!
We don't have the privilege of seeing Jesus physically (just yet), but we're told in this passage about the importance of seeing him. What does this mean for us? And what does believing in Him really look like for us today?
Jesus does some terrifying stuff in this passage, feeding people with miraculous power and even walking on water. Is the disciples resulting fear something we should also experience? Or should our fears be comforted by knowing Jesus?
Jesus was the true Son of God! In his life, we see - among other things - an example for what living as a child of God truly looks like. Here, we see that to be a child of God is to be a dependent doer.
Jesus' conversation with the woman at the well shows us our deepest needs in life, and how Jesus can meet them.
We find Jesus in this passage NOT gentle, meek and mild, but overflowing with anger. What's that about? Is passionate, zealous, even angry emotion good, bad or ugly? What does it look like to be zealous like Jesus?
We see the conclusion of the whole book of Revelation, with vivid, soul-stirring imagery of life with God in a renewed world! Jonny urges us to thirst for all that the passage puts before us.
What difference do our prayers make? How does God respond when we call out to Him? We look at Psalm 18 before turning to prayer!
Evil has had many names and many faces in this book but in Revelation 20, evil is finally defeated! Amidst some pretty obscure details, Jonny shows us how the coming downfall of evil motivates us to persevere in our walk with Jesus.
'Babylon' is a big deal in Revelation and it's not a good place! But is 'fleeing' Babylon the only posture of the Christian in the world today? How do we flee while also serving and engaging our world?
In a dramatic passage, we say goodbye to one of the major players in Revelation - Babylon. But as Babylon falls, we see two starkly different responses. What about you? Are you for or against Babylon?
Jesus thinks that what we do with our money reveals and shapes the health of the whole person. What does he mean? How do we live in light of this teaching of Christ?
Today Tom speaks to @joannaclay_design to unpack some of the topics that Jonny Mellor explored in our last episode. To hear the full version of Wendy Mann's talk click here: https://emmanueloxford.org/talks/are-you-listening-wendy-mann
Revelation gets even crazier with the introduction of a dragon! The symbolic storytelling has much to teach us, and Jonny takes us into the story.
On the morning we heard the news that one of our church family had died, Jonny took us back into Revelation 7 looking for hope.
Jonny wraps up our series by showing us the wartime tone of the end of the letter, and encouraging us to put on our armour and fight.
At the baptism of Phoebe & Dave, we explored a passage of practical contrast for Christians and those who don't follow Jesus.
In the penultimate talk of the series, Jonny opens up the imagery of us as a temple, exploring what this meant in the ancient world and what it means for us today.
Jonny hones in on the biblical metaphor of Christians as 'foreigners'. By drawing on Israel's experience in exile, he shows us what it looks like for us to live as foreigners and exiles in Birmingham today.
Long-distance runner Jonny Mellor joins former athlete and LJMU lecturer Kelly Massey to discuss his preparations for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. From the beginning of his professional running career as one of the first Sport Scholars at LJMU, to being signed with Team New Balance Manchester and qualifying for the Games, Jonny offers a fascinating insight into his preparations as the only male runner selected to represent Team England in the marathon. In conversation with, Kelly Massey, the latest edition of the 1823 podcast delves into the minds of elite athletes. From crying during physiotherapy sessions to encounters with Usain Bolt, Jonny and Kelly – a Commonwealth silver and bronze medal holder - share a half hour window into their lives ahead of the beginning of the highly anticipated Birmingham Games.
As part of our online content for Summer Sunday gatherings in homes, Jonny unpacked the implications of Jesus picture of 'yeast in the dough'. We see how this simple metaphor has huge relevance for our lives outside the gathered church.
Jonny unpacks the immense fuel for prayer in Paul's own prayer for the Ephesian church.
Jonny helps us see the importance of knowing God better, and shows us several key ways of pursuing that in our lives.
Deconstructing faith is a contentious topic. Some see it as highly destructive, others deeply enlightening and, for others, it is an inevitability that every person of faith will have to face at one time or another. As we continue our episodes asking 'why we're still Christians?' Jonny opens on why he is still the type of Christian that he is and how his faith has changed in the last few years. The letter to the church in Pergamum is challenging, but for those with ears to hear, Jesus' words have the power to do us so much good! Jonny walks us through...
How do we experience God today? By the Holy Spirit! Jonny introduces us to Him and His work.
The second aspect of being a disciple is our love for our neighbours. Jonny unpacks this key idea with three practical applications.
What does it really mean to 'put into practice the teachings of Jesus?'. Jesus helpfully summarised it into two main parts. Jonny explores the first of those...
As we focus this year much more intentionally on what it means to follow Jesus, Jonny begins our January mini-series by exploring the meaning of the word 'disciple'.
We'd all love to be a 'good' person, right? What does it mean and how can it happen? Jonny explores.
What is joy? How do we get joy? How is the Holy Spirit the key to bringing us deep and lasting joy? Jonny explores!

The relationship between Christianity and the arts has always been one of extremes. For long periods of time and in different cultural settings, the two parties have got on fabulously: strengthening faith, promoting beauty, booming out an arresting prophetic voice and working for the common good. At other times… well, it's been a bit of a car crash. Recently, there has been a growing feeling that it's time to attend to this relationship again. Fix broken bridges. Re-examine sources of contention. Explore new ways to co-exist for the flourishing of all. Faith in the Arts is a new podcast that wants to move this conversation forward. And this is our pilot! We're raising money on Kickstarter to record, produce and promote the first season. In this first episode, we introduce the team: Marlita Hill, founder of the Kingdom Artist Initiative as well as a choreographer and author, residing in Southern California. Alastair Gordon, co-founder of Morphē Arts, painter and art tutor at Leith School of Art, Edinburgh. Jonny Mellor, co-founder of Sputnik Faith and Arts, hip-hop artist and church leader, living in Birmingham, UK. Marlita, Alastair and Jonny discuss what they love about the arts, how their experiences of faith spaces affected them, and why there is still need for conversation and encouragement among artists who belong to the church: why there's still room for one more podcast. If you enjoy the conversation, don't forget to support us on Donately!

Fasting is something that people do in the Bible, and it’s something that Christians have done through the ages, but the Bible never directly tells us that we should do it. Therefore, why should we bother? Jonny (and friends) puts forward the case for fasting as we continue our series on the Sermon on The Mount.
Jonny brings us the next in our Sermon On The Mount series, looking at Jesus' teaching on sensitive areas of relationships and morality. From June 14th.
After Jesus' very direct teaching on anger and lust, he moves on in Matthew 5:33-37, to the seemingly niche topic of vows and oaths. In this message, Jonny explains why, rather than being a lull in the action, this teaching is very important and very relevant to us today. From June 21st.

What Is This Crisis Teaching Us About Ourselves? | Talk & Interviews | Jonny Mellor and friends by Churchcentral Birmingham
Jonny unpacks what it looks like for followers of Jesus to be salt and light in lockdown and beyond. From Sunday 10th May 2020.
As we continue our look into the foundations of Churchcentral South, Jonny opens up the subject of mission. What are we here for as a church? What does God have for us? How do we play our part?
In this talk for Churchcentral West and North, Jonny takes us into another angle on the story of God, the story of God's mission. Could it be that there's a glorious job for us to join with in our Father's family business? (The start is missing, where Jonny asks us to imagine our dream job...)
With all the challenges of living as Christians in a culture that doesn't love Jesus, how are we to go about 'sharing our faith'? By giving an overview of Peter's thinking on this theme, Jonny urges us to consider not simply the importance of words, but of our lives.
The idea of suffering for our faith is something that, for Christians living in Britain in the late 20th/early 21st century, always seemed like something that happened to other people, in other places. However, in the present climate, it seems to be becoming a more immediate possibility. The same was true of the first readers of 1 Peter, and Peter’s advice to them is incredibly relevant to us today, especially the seemingly strange exhortation- to ‘be very glad’.
Living as Christians in exile is not for the half-hearted! In this passage Peter explains to us what it looks like in our day to day lives, and though at first glance, some of what he says may not look particularly inviting, Jonny explains why practical Christianity is just as wonderful as the salvation we celebrate.
At the beginning of a busy term, it’s helpful to remember that our activity will be important but it will not be decisive. As the world pushes us towards anxiety, never ending consumption and ceaseless activity, Jonny looks at how we can build rhythms of stillness into our lives to powerfully declare that we are not God, God is God.

Together Podcast | A conversation about faith, justice and how to change the world
Have you ever had a piece of art move you? Perhaps a beautiful painting, a rousing melody, or even a cliffhanger on Hollyoaks? Ok maybe not the last one... but whatever you enjoy, there's no hiding art's ability to impact us. So could art positively impact the world around us too? We spoke about exactly that with Jonny Mellor, who as well as leading a Church in Birmingham, also leads a collective of Christian artists called Sputnik. Join Dan, Chris, Emma and Abi as they dive deep into the art world and also discuss the recent fires in the Amazon. The post Ep 12 – World changing art with Jonny Mellor (pt 1) appeared first on We Are Tearfund.
Critical, finger-pointing, slow to think the best of others - it's not a great list! But, tragically, even the church of Jesus can fall into such graceless judgmentalism. By considering our past, our future, and who God is, Jonny helps us move instead towards a generosity of spirit.
As the Blueprint series wraps up, Jonny helps us think through what godly wisdom looks like in families. Seeing that our families must be 'for' something bigger than themselves, we then saw how this applied to us as a church as well.
To Whom Would We Go? - Jonny Mellor by Oasis Church Birmingham
One of the most basic questions a human being can ask is 'who am I?'. As Jonny outlines a biblical picture of identity, he explains why we have to consider not just one, or even two, but three different identities, as we seek to understand who we are and who we could be. (Preached at West+North only).
What does the resurrection of Jesus really mean? On Easter Sunday, Jonny shows us how Jesus beating the grave impacts our futures, the future of the universe and even our lives in the here and now.
As part of our Good News series (and our Big Questions mornings), Jonny looked at the question of whether there's any evidence to support the claim that Jesus of Nazareth came back from the dead. NOTE: Final section of Jonny's talk has been left out, it contained personal stories not for online sharing.
Two of the most noticeable things about Daniel are that he navigated life in exile brilliantly and that he had a disciplined, faith filled prayer life. In Daniel 9, we zoom in on what that prayer life looked like and get practical as to how we can order our private, devotional lives to be like Daniel.
In today’s chapter, we see God bring about an incredible change in the King of Babylon. But it was only possible because one of his people chose to participate in Babylon. Jonny opens up the amazing story we find in Daniel 4 and asks what we can learn from the incredible balancing act that Daniel plays as he faithfully serves God at the centre of Babylonian culture.
In the disorientation of exile, two questions plagued the people of God - does God still rule here, and does God still act here? The same questions ring true in our day...
As we finish up our series in Genesis 1-3, Jonny looks at the consequences of the sin of Adam and Eve, how it's impact is still felt today, and how Jesus comes to put right what they put wrong.
In this series, we’ve already seen so many deep and profound foundational truths about God, ourselves and our world. Today, Jonny pulls together some of these strands and asks: how practically should these things affect how we live? How can we, as those made in God’s image, bring order and life in the chaos?
What is a good person? How does God relate to that, if at all? What would it take for us to become "good people" and is that possible? Jonny explores.
Temples were vitally important in the ancient world across all sorts of different civilisations. In 2 Chronicles, we read about the building of the Jewish temple by Solomon. But there was no temple for Israel’s God before that, and certainly not one in Genesis 1-3. Or was there?
To get the most out of these famous but highly controversial chapters, we need to clear away a few obstacles. In our introduction to this series, Jonny Mellor and Liz Brown present us with all three chapters and some signposts to help us to hear from God most clearly in this series and beyond.
Recording of hangout with Jonny Mellor on 'Why Should Churches Care About the Arts'?
Image EDIT REMOVE Christianity has always been countercultural, and that's what we're going to talk about on the show today. We hold a lot of positions that are rapidly falling out of favor in American culture, and as a result, we have to be prepared for the reality that our life is going to look a little bit different than that of our neighbor. Maybe in the past, there was kind of a Christian coating that blanketed American culture, but that is becoming less and less true. Let me show you what I'm talking about. 1. The Desirability of Storytellers by Ed Yong from The Atlantic 2. Are Christians Called To Influence Society? A Note Of Caution by Jonny Mellor from Think Theology 3. Magnanimity: The Balm for Our Brutalized Public Discourse by Stephen M. Klugewicz from The Imaginative Conservative 4. Why I Would Never File A Lawsuit Saying My Child With Cystic Fibrosis Should Not Have Been Born by Mary Vought from The Federalist 5. How Celebration Fuels Achievement by Stu McLaren from MichaelHyatt.com All music from audionautix.com.
Following on from Aly Dixon’s chat with Claire last week, we’ve a pretty marathon-heavy pod. Mo Farah is hopping on a plane to get good at running them; Jonny Mellor won’t be getting on a plane, despite having raced one really fast; and Dewi Griffiths...
In a time of open questions, Jonny Mellor and James Ashley (MSci in Human Evolution) address a number of issues related to Jonny's talk 'Has Science Buried God?'.
On this week’s show it was the big dance on the big island, what is harder, Kona or Berkley Marathon, Amsterdam was rapid, the Kawauchi’s keep it in the family, should athlete’s be micro-chipped and you tell us what you’re most scared of. Super-swift 2.12 Berlin marathoner and Tokyo 2020 hopeful Jonny Mellor joins us, Tony is here with his trials from Birmingham, your rate you rate, look amazing in your MT kit, and tell us where you’re running next.
On this fortnights show we talk to top British road runner Jonny Mellor about racing abroad. We discuss his beige diet, lady and the tramp style spaghetti sessions, and scrambling for post race Swiss chocolate.
