Peter | John 18:12-27 | Peter Denies Jesus "I am not." — With these words, Peter denies his Lord, not once but three times. In today's reading from John 18:12–27, we witness the painful fulfillment of Jesus' prediction: Peter, the bold disciple, falters under pressure and denies even knowing Christ. In the dark courtyard, fear, weakness, and sin are exposed—not just in Peter's heart, but in ours. Yet even here, God's grace is not far. As Jesus stands bound and innocent, He bears the guilt of Peter's denial and ours, moving ever closer to the cross. This moment of failure becomes part of the greater story of forgiveness and redemption.
Welcome to Day 2596 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Theology Thursday – What is Jesus Waiting For? – I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible. Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2596 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2596 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Today is the 49th lesson in our segment, Theology Thursday. Utilizing excerpts from a book titled: I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible written by Hebrew Bible scholar and professor the late Dr. Michael S Heiser, we will invest a couple of years going through the entire Bible, exploring short Biblical lessons that you may not have received in Bible classes or Church. The Bible is a wonderful book. Its pages reveal the epic story of God's redemption of humankind and the long, bitter conflict against evil. Yet it's also a book that seems strange to us. While God's Word was written for us, it wasn't written to us. Today's lesson is: “What is Jesus Waiting For?” I recall the traumatic experience of seeing the movie A Thief in the Night as a teenager. The film was about how Jesus could return at any moment— like a thief in the night, a description borrowed from 1 Thessalonians 5:2. The message: If we weren't believers, we could be left behind by the Lord. The movie didn't lead to my decision to put my faith in Christ, but it did accomplish one desired effect—it scared me. Is the idea of the imminent return of Jesus biblical? Jesus warned His followers to be ready for His return; even He did not know the precise day or hour it would happen (Matt 24:36). Therefore, He would return unexpectedly (24:50). Other passages written after Jesus' resurrection suggest that His return could be very soon (1 Cor 1:7; Titus 2:13), even “at hand” (Phil 4:5; Jas 5:8-9). Two thousand years have passed since these blunt statements were made, leading many to believe that they have been misunderstood. Additional obstacles to the idea of an “imminent” return emerge from other Scripture passages. The New Testament suggests that certain signs or events would precede the return of Jesus. For example, the temple had to be destroyed (Matt 24:2), and there would be celestial signs indicating His return (Matt 24:30; Luke 21:11). In three of His parables, Jesus suggested that His return would not be immediate but after a delay (Luke 19:11-27; Matt 25:5, 19)—at least until the death of an aged Peter (John 21:18). Paul believed, apparently on the basis of Matthew 24:14, that the gospel had to reach all the Gentile nations before the salvation plan of God was fulfilled and Jesus would return (Rom 11:12, 25). Even 1 Thessalonians 5, the chapter in which the “thief in the night” phrase is found, suggests that believers will have some sort of inkling about the time of His return. Note how Paul uses nouns and pronouns to distinguish believers as able to discern something unbelievers will not: Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you...
Rita Sakali discussed the Gospel of Saint Luke, focusing on Jesus' transfiguration and its significance in relation to the resurrection, divine glory, and the fulfillment of prophecy. She emphasized the importance of understanding biblical teachings, the role of faith, and the limitations of human nature in comprehending God's vastness. Throughout the discussion, Rita used analogies and personal experiences to illustrate spiritual concepts, highlighting God's desire for intimacy with individuals and the transformative power of Christ's sacrifice. 00:00 Jesus' Appearance to Peter, John, James03:37 Christ's Transfiguration and Resurrection Symbolism 07:01 Early Church Fathers and Biblical Wisdom12:16 Resurrection's Impact on Disciples and Church17:06 God's Greatness Beyond Human Limitations19:25 Peter, James, and John's Transfiguration 26:09 God's Pursuit of Intimate Understanding32:12 Christ's Transfiguration

Bern Leckie and Owen Lynch share thoughts and feelings about a selection of letters in the New Testament from early church leaders. The first followers of Jesus were suffering as they spread the news of God's coming kingdom. They were not being equipped for armed struggle but to develop and mature in Christ-like character while overflowing with his Spirit and love. From a distance, this sounds like something which can be calmly analysed to figure out how it works. But from the first Christians' perspective, they were constantly learning from experience and having to work out what was happening, what was effective and helpful in their lives, and what to expect from God next. The way they were learning, as well as the change they wanted to see in the world, might explain why these writers emphasised putting faith into practice.Trying to turn their encouragements into laws, doctrines and rules might be harder to achieve than we think, however - some of the most prominent reforming theologians like Martin Luther and John Calvin made strenuous efforts, but were all their conclusions faithful to these writers' intentions? If not, how can we know any better? And when we disagree among ourselves about things like this, is there any chance we can do this helpfully and lovingly? In the next part of our boxset, we begin hearing from Jeremiah, one of the major prophets who brought word of how unfaithful God's people had been, but also hope for a better future. Week 30 - Mark 15:40 - 16:8 (including 9-20). Death and burial of Jesus; The Resurrection; Women, the first witnesses to the Resurrection. In this study we finish the final chapter of Mark by taking a closer look at the women at the foot of Jesus' cross when he dies and the women who were on their way to anoint Jesus on Sunday morning and find Him gone and also a look at the woman who was the first to talk with Jesus after His resurrection. This look at these women brings some great insight into who these women were and takes a specific look at Mary of Bethany (Lazarus' sister) and Mary Magdalene with some exploration into them possibly being the same person. Pastor puts out the lay of the land, where specific houses were located and where the tomb was along with the look at the women and puts together the resurrection story using the accounts of all 4 gospels and unites them into one cohesive reconstruction of the events of Resurrection Sunday. Here's how Pastor takes Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and puts the pieces together: Scene 1: Very Early Sunday morning 1. Mary Magdalene, Mary (Clopas' wife) and Salome head to the tomb. 2. They see the open tomb and Mary Magdalene returns to town to tell Peter and John. Scene 2: Early Sunday morning 1. Joanna (& Susanna?) leave Hasmonean Palace for the tomb 2. Meeting Mary (Clopas' wife) and Salome, they enter tomb and see 2 angels 3. They return to town to tell the others Scene 3: Early Sunday morning 1. Peter and John run to the tomb. Mary Magdalene follows shortly thereafter. 2. Peter & John return home. Mary Magdalene lingers. Sees 2 angels. 3. Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene. (The first eyewitness to see Jesus after His resurrection). Scene 4: Sunday morning 1. Salome and Mary (Clopas' wife) and others head to tell the other disciples. 2. Jesus meets them on the way. Scene 5: Sunday afternoon/evening 1. Cleopas/Clopas and companion head to Emmaus. 2. Jesus meets them on the way 3. They return to upper room to meet disciples 4. Jesus shows up! The teaching time continues with the story of “Doubting” Thomas. And His words, “My Lord and My God!” Thomas understood that because Jesus was alive, He is who He claimed Himself to be AND He is the One whom the Scriptures claim Him to be: The Son of the Living God come to earth. Pastor ends with the story of Peter being asked 3 times by Jesus if he loves Him, and Peter being commissioned 3 times by Jesus to feed His sheep. Peter willingly committed his heart to Jesus and would willingly go to his death for his faith in Jesus some 30 years later. Peter was sold out for Christ. Will we too be sold out to Christ and follow Him with all our heart, all our soul, all our mind and all our strength? Will we love Him with everything we are? We close out this first of the 4 gospels with Jesus ascending to the Father and letting us know that He is with us always, even until the end of the age. The summary of Mark: God is amazing, He is an amazing Savior, and He does everything He says He's going to do! https://www.awakeusnow.com The Gospel of Mark is the first of the 4 Gospels we are studying. The book of Mark highlights and applies the fundamental teachings of the Biblical faith as encountered through the life and teachings of Jesus as written by Mark. This study is great for large group. small group or home group Bible study.

In episode 669: The Church Of Unhallowed Ground, Peter John begins this conversation by recounting a bizarre childhood encounter with a large moon that seemed to approach his window, a memory confirmed by his brother but confounding their mother due to an unexplained time lapse. This sets the stage for Peter's adult encounters after purchasing a decommissioned church. While renovating the church, he experiences escalating supernatural phenomena: his dog growls at 3:10 AM every night, objects move on their own, and keys mysteriously relocate. Peter vividly describes encounters with various apparitions, including a playful boy ghost who ages over time and a menacing figure he calls the "scare taker." The church, rich with historical artifacts and Masonic symbols, is a hotbed of supernatural activity. His accounts offer a thrilling and thought-provoking exploration of spiritual warfare in a once-sacred space, making for an engrossing discussion. There is a man on a mission. His mission isn't very clear, but he is definitely on one, and he will troll and threaten and try to ruin anyone who gets in his way. Matthew Berdyck declared war on the small town of St Joseph, Missouri because they wouldn't bow to his wishes. It all stared in a local IHOP restaurant, where he tried to be a knight in shining armor to a woman who was being assaulted in the parking lot. It didn't go how he planned. Or did it? Either way, this sparked an epic online temper tantrum of slander, threats, and double speak that would include terroristic threats from an obviously unhinged man. Facebook banned him, but later started paying him. Matthew is not in prison. Join Bill as he discusses the documentary with creator, Peter John Ross. Toward the end of Jesus‘ ministry on earth, Peter gets distracted by comparing himself to people around him. Jesus‘ response is something we all need to hear: “What is that to you? Jesus and Peter: John ends his gospel with a beautiful story of restoration. In the shadow of the cross, Peter had utterly failed Jesus — when Jesus most needed a friend. How would Jesus respond to him? With shame? Or punishment? Instead, Jesus restored Peter in friendship and his calling as an apostle and shepherd of his people. Once again, in loving forgiveness, Jesus told Peter, "Follow me!" Recorded on Apr 21, 2024, on John 21:15-25 by Pastor David Parks. Finding Life in Jesus' Name is a sermon series on the gospel according to John in the Bible. Have you ever felt unsatisfied with your life? Or, even when things were going well, something was still missing? Many people sense there must be something more. But what?? John, one of the closest friends of Jesus, believed that Jesus came into the world so that we may have life and have it to the full. Jesus turned John's life upside down, and John claims this new life — marked by God's power, presence, and purpose — is available for all who believe. Sermon Transcript Since last July, we've been working through The Gospel According to John in a series called Finding Life in Jesus' Name. It took us 44 weeks! But today, we're going to bring this series to a close in John 21. Next week, we'll start a new series on the letter to the Ephesians called The Gospel in Life, which will run for the next three months. John was all about finding life in Jesus' name, and Ephesians is all about what the life looks like that is found by faith in Jesus' name. Incidentally, the Apostle John finished his ministry in Ephesus, so I think it's fitting for us as well. But today, we'll consider the beautiful restoration of Peter after his repeated denial of Jesus only a few weeks earlier. Have you ever done something so bad you weren't sure if you would ever recover? Or have you been struggling with something for so many years that you're about ready to give up on yourself? How do you think Jesus would treat you if you could talk with him face to face? I think it would look something like what happened between Jesus and Peter at the end of John's gospel. If you have a Bible/app, please take it and open it to John 21:15. John 21:15–17 (NIV), “15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” 16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” 17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.” Ok, let's pause here. Last week, we worked through the third appearance of Jesus Christ after he had risen from the dead. He appeared to seven disciples along the shores of Galilee while they were fishing. He provided a miraculous catch of fish to represent the work of the gospel — that there would be a great harvest. But also, Jesus made them breakfast because he wanted to spend time with them. It's really a stunning thought: that Jesus would not just care for his disciples in general but that after his resurrection from the dead, after all authority in heaven and earth had been given to him, he would still want this kind of personal relationship with them. Even after giving his life to save them from sin and death, he was still loving and serving them in humble ways. Our passage starts immediately after this. John says that after they had finished eating, Jesus started this line of questioning with Peter. “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” More than what/who? Do you love me more than the miraculous catch of fish? More than these things of the world? More than the other disciples? That would've been awkward, right? “Peter,
Peter's failure resonates because we all fail. And yet, we don't like talking about it. We want to push our failures to the background, but this story brings them to the front. The point is not to tell us how bad we are, but to show us how good God is and how much we need him. God meets us in our failure to restore us.
When Jesus first saw Peter, He said to him, “‘You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas' (which means Peter)” (John 1:42). God the Father chose Peter to make the great confession of Jesus, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16). Then Jesus made a play on words with Peter's name, “You are Peter (Petros), and on this rock (petra) I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18). This rock was not Peter himself but rather his confession of Jesus as the Christ. Later, in the epistle that bears his name, Peter further confessed Jesus as a living stone, chosen and precious to God, and the cornerstone of God's spiritual house of chosen children. Rev. Carl Roth, pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in Elgin, TX, joins Andy and Sarah to talk about the “Searching Scripture” feature in the April 2024 issue of the Lutheran Witness titled "A Chosen Community" on 1 Peter 2:4–10. This year, "Searching Scripture" is themed "Elect Exiles" and will walk through the First Epistle of St. Peter. Follow along every month and search Scripture with us! Find online exclusives of the Lutheran Witness at witness.lcms.org and subscribe to the Lutheran Witness at cph.org/witness. 1 Peter 2:4–10 4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” 7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”[a] 8 and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Sermon from Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024- Deron Spoo, Senior Pastor Part 1 of 8 of the series Unlonely
”Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved—the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, “Lord, who will betray you?” Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?” - John 21:20-21 NLT
This episode dives into MEDITATIVE prayer, which takes a little more focus, discipline, and time than vocal prayer. Meditative prayer is beautiful for growing our virtues of patience and helping us develop more intimacy with Jesus! You can meditate on all kinds of things, including: scripture, prayers, pictures, nature, or even just a word. By training our bodies to slow down and focus, we can go much deeper into a portion of the Bible or into a truth that God wants to reveal to us. Since we are physical people, don't skimp on preparing your body to meditate. Remove all distractions, get comfortable, and take some slow breaths before trying to dive into meditation. And remember that we are seeking a deep relationship with Jesus, not just the good feelings that may come from prayer. Feelings come and feelings go, and we'll talk about that more in a couple of episodes! Some resources to look into for meditation are: The Rosary Lectio Divina Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis de Sales Ignatian Audio Meditations Try to take some time this week to meditate! I recommend taking a gospel story that you know well. Read the story a few times and try to picture the elements involved. Then, after asking the Holy Spirit to help you, try to "dive into" the story. Either picturing yourself as a character or "watching" it as a movie. Take the story SLOWLY and linger on any elements that stand out to you. Afterwards, journal about anything that stood out to you or surprised you from your meditation. Some ideas are: Luke 5:1-11 - Jesus calling Peter John 11 - Jesus raising Lazarus Luke 8:43-48 - The Hemorrhaging Woman Mark 4:35-41 - Jesus calms the storm
We dropped off a bit to take care of our mental health, amongst other things, but are back with an episode we recorded over a month ago - don't worry, still fresh can eat. We discuss choices made during LKY's 100 celebrations, religious alternatives to halloween, and how homophobia and the haze may be connected.

David Cameron pushed his “big society” plan during his time as prime minister – but it didn't work very well. Was it always doomed to fail? Seth Thevoz speaks to Peter John, head of the School of Politics and Economics at King's College London, about the history and legacy of this policy position – as well as the lessons we can learn from it. “The big society didn't seem to stack up with wider policy changes.” “The critics were out really from the start.” “It proved to be embarrassing, and became a target of satire. It was easily targeted and ridiculed.” www.patreon.com/bunkercast Written and presented by Seth Thévoz. Audio editor: Alex Rees. Managing editor: Jacob Jarvis. Music by Kenny Dickinson. Pastor John Keating Acts 3:1-10 Today I want to challenge a mindset: to start noticing the needs that need addressed around us and maybe quit accepting it and walking on by. Acts 3:1-10 (NLT) - He was lame from birth (read ahead in chapter 4 he was 40 years old) - He had to be carried, he couldn't stand/move about without the help of others - Each Day he was taken to the front entrance of the Temple (Their Church) - So, he could beg for money Acts 3:3 (NLT) - When he saw Peter and John, it shows he knows him… - Probably had given him money before…there was a previous experience of you can help me in this way… Acts 3:4-6 (NLT) - Look at US, he's going to throw me some coin! - “I don't have what you want” then quit asking for my attention, wasting my time. - Peter says I see you in need, but YOU NEED SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN WHAT YOU'RE asking for! Acts 3:7-8 (NLT) - Who do we reach our hand out to? Who do we offer a helping hand? Peter & John did not just speak up about Jesus, but literally extended their hand… Acts 3:9-10 (NLT) - Out of the hardest times, come God's greatest blessings! I wondered what this Acts 3 story would look like today… - People ask for a place for their kids to play indoors but they need a place to invest in their kids. - People need a place to educate their kids in math, science, but need BIBLICAL KNOWLEDGE - Need a sports league, a time to pray. - Need marriage mentoring, need Christ in the center. This Rise Up is to meet the needs that go beyond our earthly condition, when things happen, we aren't prepared for like my friend Jimmy, our needs can change beyond our control. We want to do our part and have 100% participation. Will you Rise Up?
