In Ep.195 of the Sports Therapy Association podcast, esteemed Professor Ian Horsley, Athlete Health Lead Physio for Upper Limb in UK Sports Institute, unpacks the world of shoulder assessments. The first in a two-part series, this episode delves into the nuances of the shoulder, from an overview of its complex nature to a discussion on the perceived complexity, intrinsic stability, and neuromuscular control related to the shoulder joint. In addition, the episode probes into the contrasting aspects of qualitative and quantitative assessments, revealing priceless insights for therapists and sports professionals. The conversation shifts to shed light on high-level athletic performance, emphasizing the importance of experiencing beautiful, effortless movement. Reiterating on the significance of proprioception or joint position sense, this episode challenges the quantitative-heavy traditional approach. Tools like contralateral mirroring and proprioceptive analysis deepen our understanding of shoulder health and the multi-layered aspects of shoulder rehabilitation. Using specific shoulder tests, listeners will be given an insider's view on identifying potential shoulder issues. In addition, the importance of task assessment, testing in real-world activities is emphasized. The kinetic chain takes center stage as listeners are led into a better understanding of repetitive injuries and how defects in the kinetic chain contribute to it. Taking into account the need for meaningful assessments along different tasks and settings, highlights the importance of movement-based training over focusing solely on muscle groups. Listeners are also guided through an intimate exploration of shoulder rehabilitation. The discussion covers how personalized approach to rehab provides better results than generic methods, and underutilized techniques such as vestibular rehabilitation are considered. Professor Horsley shares valuable insights on symptoms, improving movement quality, and enhancing joint mobility. News of upcoming webinars and courses with Professor Ian Horsley are also shared for those looking to expand their understanding of shoulder rehabilitation. Tom Bishop had a stellar season on the ITU circuit in 2017 and represented Team England at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. But after chasing the Olympic dream for years, he made the switch to middle/long distance racing at the end of 2022. In 2023 the Leeds-based athlete finished second at Clash Miami, before wins at Challenge Puerto Varas and Challenge Wales. He feels he's finally found his happy place as a triathlete. You'll hear:04:00 Why 2023 is Tom's make or break year 'I want to be a professional triathlete, being on funding doesn't feel like you're a professional triathlete, it feels like you're part of a process, you're basically at their expense and I wanted to progress and give myself confidence that I'm progressing and making a career out of the sport.'08:00 Why Tom feels more confident after leaving his short course career behind and why he now feels like a professional athlete. 10:00 Is it scary leaving the security of an elite level programme?12:00 How does Tom's training differ now he is focussing on middle distance, compared to short distance? 'I reduced a lot of running because I was picking up a lot of niggles, and I put it all into the bike.' 'I don't do any gym, but I do some exercises as part of my morning routine and some short hill sprints.'17:00 The ability to pick the races Tom wants to do and how he's enjoying the more 20:00 The ability of some athletes to do every distance, from short course to middle and in some cases even long distance. 24:00 Does Tom think all of the powers that be in triathlon will work together to develop one racing calendar? 26:00 Does Tom wish he had made the switch to middle distance earlier? I wish I had gone earlier, but I also don't regret trying to qualify for the Olympic Games.27:00 What is it about the pull of the Olympic Games? How much does it dig away at you? 'I think it's something that's forced on you more than is needed. Younger kids shouldn't be made to think Olympics is the only goal and the only pathway.'31:00 All I want to be able to is race without having anything else to worry about and that's when I get the best out of myself. It's nice to be confident in a race again.'33:00 Tom's goals now that he is racing Middle distance and why he's torn about doing a long distance race in the very near future. 38:00 We hear about Tom's brother David who used to be a triathlete, now works full time for Huub and is an amazing runner. 42:00 You'll also hear from Marc Barrow and Ian Lloyd from Swansea Vale Tri about how they've gone from being a bunch of friends swim, bike and running to the biggest triathlon club in Wales and one of the biggest in the UK. There's a lot to be said for truly empathetic leadership, where caring for and taking an interest in the individual comes first. Not only does this create an environment in which people can flourish, it makes winning and success more likely. And my guest this week, Ama Agbeze, undoubtedly proved that to be the case, when she led England to their greatest netball triumph – a historic Commonwealth Games gold medal in 2018. The Commonwealth Games is the pinnacle competition in netball, because currently the sport is not part of the summer Olympics. Team England's victory in 2018 was their first gold medal in the competition – and was the undoubted all-time highlight for the sport in this country. How did Ama capytain the team to triumph? We talk about the importance of valuing individuals within a team set up, and Ama also shares insights such as the impact on her life and mental health when she was unexpectedly dropped from the team the following year. And Ama's emotional intelligence doesn't just shine on court – she does some amazing work off it, too, in her role as an ambassador for Greenhouse Sports, the charity that uses sport to help disadvantaged young people. In this episode:The importance of valuing individuals within a team set upEmpathy and sincere complimentsSport as a great leveller"If you work hard anything is possible”The key mentors in Ama's life – and what she took from themMaking your own mind up about people, not accepting pre-conceptionsSuccess is not a straight lineThe importance of belief Remembering people are just people – and taking them off pedestalsManaging voices of doubtImportance of a support networkThe journey is more important than the medalLearning that it is ok to be vulnerable The power of time management & prioritisingGreenhouse Sports - Changing lives Through Sport: https://www.greenhousesports.org/**MyTwitter: https://twitter.com/simonmundieInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/simon-mundie-89379114/And for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from four years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.com (where you can also drop me an email)Please do share this episode - it makes a big difference in helping people find this podcast.Thank you. England wasn't its sharpest and the US played inspired soccer. With passionate play from US Captain Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah the US kept England off balance but missed a couple of huge opportunities including one off the crossbar by Christian Pulisic. Controversy still surrounds the lack of minutes for Brenden Aaronson and Gio Reyna. Begs the question, even when the team is playing this well, shouldn't we have our absolute best squad on the field? The boys need goals…period. Sets up a huge do-or-die game on Tuesday against Iran, who beat Wales 2-0.

Here's a challenge for you. Put on a blindfold and then ask a friend to run with you. I guarantee that you'll find it incredibly stressful! Now imagine swimming, biking, and running not just the two of you but with other competitors around you. Finally, imagine doing this at a pace that will allow you to break a world record or win a world championship medal. Guiding a visually impaired triathlete doesn't just mean having great fitness. It also requires great communication skills and the ability to build trust with your partner. Today's guest is Duncan Shea Simmonds.
