Shane McConkey was the most influential skier or snowboarder of our time. Not only was he an incredible athlete, but he was also one of those innovators who was always tinkering with products to make the sport better and more fun. Between lobbying for mid-fats in the late 90s and pioneering rocker technology in the 2000s, there is not another athlete I can think of who has done more for progressing. On top of all that, Shane was a funny, laugh-out-loud comedian, and on the podcast this week, I take you through my trip to the McConkey PMS event and get some funny Shane stories from folks like Sherry McConkey, JT Holmes, Scott Gaffney, Mike Douglas, Chris Davenport and many more. Connery Lundin's ski career should be as prolific as he's manufactured it to be. This is a kid from Oakland who was so burnt out on ski racing that he decided at 18 that he would never ski. That all changed with the right roommates, who got Connery back into skiing on his terms…and once Connery fell back in love with the sport, he went all in on becoming a pro skier. But, to make things harder for himself, he didn't do much to promote himself off snow…. but that didn't matter, and it all worked out. Connery graduated to his day job of filming with Warren Miller and MSP, and we talk about it all…. Speed Riding (0:00:00) What is the riskiest thing you've ever done? All of us have done risky things in our lives: some of us have jumped off a cliff into the ocean some of us have swam with sharks and others of us have confessed their love to a complete stranger. Whatever the risk may be, these things exhilarate us and challenge our nerves. Now that we are moving into the snowy season, we'd like to talk about a new winter sport that is amping up the risk factor – it's called speed riding. We're super lucky to have JT Holmes on the show with us today, a professional multi-sport athlete who you may know from his insane videos with Red Bull or his stunt work in the Transformers movies and Furious 7. He's here to talk with us about speed riding. Public Transportation (0:12:08) There's something exciting about taking the bus. I always feel like I'm embarking on an adventure when I get into a mass transit vehicle. But how do these really affect our quality of life? Here with us to tell us more about the future of transportation is Carl Arky, Senior Media Relations Director for the Utah Transit Authority. Making Your Home Cozy (0:32:07) How many of you have heard the word “hygge” (pronounced “he-yoo-guh)? If you've visited Denmark or seen Frozen on Broadway, you might know what I'm talking about. But for those who are completely lost, hygge is the Danish word that translates to mean “the art of being cozy.” Doesn't that sound nice? One great way to embrace hygge is by making your home cozy. Allison Bean from The Spruce joins us to help know exactly how do that. Baby Names 2020 (0:50:32) With the new year, there are always fun predictions to be made. This year we are making guesses as to who will win the Oscars, the presidential elections, and what kinds of things will define this new decade. We also can take a look at what the top names of the past few decades have been, and what we predict will be the popular names of the coming year. We are talking baby names 2020! We are joined by Pam Redmond, the creator of Nameberry, to make some of our predictions and talk about what's in a name. Begin with the End in Mind (1:07:48) Each year we're supposed to come up with New Year's resolutions. We focus on improving things like our health, fitness, and relationships. But before we make our goals, we need to consider our values and keeping the end in mind. Ganel-Lyn Condie joins us with tips on how to make more purposeful goals by focusing on our values. Ganel-Lyn is a friend of the show and motivational speaker and we're happy to have her on the show today to discuss this important topic. ASMR (1:25:56) While scrolling through social media, the chances are high that you'll encounter a video of someone cutting soap, whispering, or crinkling paper. Without any prior knowledge, these videos may seem peculiar, but they actually trigger an autonomous sensory meridian response, or ASMR, that can be used for relaxation. Here to tell us more about ASMR and what makes these videos beneficial is Dr. Craig Richards. Dr. Richards is the Co-Author of the first brain scan study of ASMR and the founder of the website ASMRUniversity.com.

JT Holmes is a world-class professional skier and aerial athlete. Holmes grew up on the slopes of Squaw Valley and as a 15-year-old fell in with freeskiing legend Shane McConkey. McConkey taught Holmes that existence as a professional skier was a possibility .... and that anything was possible in life. Holmes has never turned back. A tremendously focused person, Holmes knew from a young age that he always wanted to be a professional skier. This passion has never faded and sits at the core of his existence. While skiing has always been his first love, his career has been a boundless exercise in the possibilities of gravity-fed passions. Skiing led to base jumping, which led to ski base jumping and in recent years, speed flying. A Red Bull and GoPro athlete, Holmes is a pioneer in freeskiing and high-flying aerial pursuits. Beyond his pursuit of these gravity-fed sports, Holmes has carved out a role as a Hollywood stuntman, with highly-acclaimed aerial work in Transformers 3, Hangover 3, Godzilla, Fast and Furious 7, The Amazing Spider Man 2, and more. However, Holmes career has not come without a cost. While his personal and professional passions have given him the ultimate in athletic fulfillment, it has also take the lives of his two closest friends. It was a tremendous honor to sit down and chat with Holmes. A soulful guy who is tremendously intelligent, Holmes shares unflinching and open insights into the motivations behind one of the most accomplished mountain adventure athletes in the world. We're grateful for the inspiration that JT has provided a generation of mountain athletes and we hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did. Inspired by JT? In the The Athletic Stance I have made it my job to interview professionals at the top of the skiing field to sift out the patterns that have lead them to success, however that's defined. We talk about why they ski, what helps them stay at the top, social media, community, health, nutrition and a lot more.
For most of JT Holmes’ 20+ years as a professional athlete, he’s been looked at as a pro skier and he still has that title. These days JT moonlights as a wingsuit pilot, off-road racer, and stuntman, all at a professional level. He’s worked to achieve some great things in the mountains, air, and on the big screen over the years while experiencing more loss (people doing what they love) than anyone I know. JT lives in a world of risk and he gets ‘real’ talking about death, his avalanche, and his career in general. JT Holmes Show Notes 2:58: JT’s racing career is coming together and he’s winning. On this episode of the "Sponsored" podcast, presented by Powder Radio, host Mike Powell interviews Cody Townsend, who was fresh off a "jungle skiing" shoot as the stunt double for Vin Diesel. Townsend talks about how, as a kid, he followed the stars of Squaw, like Shane McConkey, JT Holmes, and Kent Kreitler, until they let them ski with him. "I literally would tail them, two or three chairs behind them, and follow them around," says Townsend. "I remember I had a pair of GS skis, and I bent up the tails with irons so that i had my first pair of twin-tips, and those guys are on fat skis on a pow day, ripping turns, and skiing lines and I would just straightline everything because I had such skinny skis on, to try to keep up with them. Eventually, that day, JT came up to me and was like, 'Dude, you got to get some fat skis.' The rest is history. JT and Kreitler took me under their wing." Townsend is also candid about his setbacks and doubt of fulfilling his dream. "I remember going to Shane McConkey's house... putting the VHS in... watching it and just wanting to cry because [my footage] was so bad," he says. "I definitely remember, man, maybe I'm not going to be a pro skier, because I suck. I was really down at that moment. This has been my dream since I was 6 years old, since I watched Scot Schmidt movies and was like, oh my God, I want to be a skier."
