2025 wasted no time in gifting us with plenty of exciting new watches, and this week on our first pod of the new year, the boys are tapping in with the Oris Diver 65 60th Anniversary Edition, a lovely tribute edition to an Oris original (the brand's 'little hero,' in CEO Rolf Studer's own words), and the not-so-distant-cousin of a Topper Edition we ourselves did, some 9 years ago. The boys also share a few predictions, along with their own release hopes and dreams for 2025 – with lots to unpack here, so settle in, and get a pen handy as their recommended "By the Way" watchlists are getting longer by the day. As always, you can reach the boys for questions and comments at podcast@topperjewelers.com. Thanks for your support, and thanks for listening! John Paradine was there on Day One of Red Bull, when the first can was officially sold in the USA. In this podcast, he shares stories about the way Red Bull established themselves in the USA - and the unorthodox ways they went about building the marketing organization (and their approach to ROI). Field Marketing was (and still is) a huge element in Red Bull's marketing mix, and on this podcast we share the insights of how anyone (brand, operator or creator) could utilize that mindset to be successful. Shane McConkey was the most influential skier or snowboarder of our time. Not only was he an incredible athlete, but he was also one of those innovators who was always tinkering with products to make the sport better and more fun. Between lobbying for mid-fats in the late 90s and pioneering rocker technology in the 2000s, there is not another athlete I can think of who has done more for progressing. On top of all that, Shane was a funny, laugh-out-loud comedian, and on the podcast this week, I take you through my trip to the McConkey PMS event and get some funny Shane stories from folks like Sherry McConkey, JT Holmes, Scott Gaffney, Mike Douglas, Chris Davenport and many more. Lhotse Merriam Hawk's huge role in organizing the sport of big mountain skiing and beyond cannot be ignored or understated. As the Vice President of the International Freeskiers Association, an organization she helped co-found with Shane McConkey, she was a 1-woman band creating the infrastructure for the future of ski contests outside of what fell under FIS control. And go figure, this year, the crown jewel of big mountain freeride competitions, FIS, purchased the Freeride World Tour. Matthias Giraud aka Super Frenchie is a big mountain skier and BASE Jumper. Matthias grew up skiing in St Gervais-les-Bains, France. He was inspired by the mountain legends of Chamonix who set the bar for mountain sports and following their passion. He wanted to Ski BASE Jump since he was 9 years old and was lucky enough to meet Shane McConkey who steered him in that direction. Adding a parachute on your back was the perfect solution to turning big mountain skiing into double XL mountain skiing. Matthias has gone on to ski BASE Jump some of the world's first descents. Paul Crandall is more connected to radical people than anyone I've had on the podcast. LP, as he's known, has done everything when it comes to events. He started as the banner guy, complete with all the zip ties and in just a couple years, he became the puppet master, complete with all the Red Bull budgets. After a decade of creating and executing the most important events in the world, it was onto the GoPro rocket ship, where he experienced the pain of going public, cashed out and is now all about kindness. Scott Gaffney - Matchstick Productions Editor, Producer, Filmer, the G in Shane McConkey's G.N.A.R., Lake Tahoe Surfer, & Badass Freeskier Episode #24 Brought to you by Tamarack Resort & Alta Ski Area "You should not be doing things with the objective of making a social media post about it. Go do things for the experience, not because you get to make a post." - Scott Gaffney My guest today is Scott Gaffney. Scott is the filmer, director, and editor of the famous Matchstick Productions who makes some of the strongest ski movies in existence. Scott is literally the G in Shane McConkey's game of GNAR (Gaffney's Numerical Assessment of Radness) that we all love so well. He even edited and produced the movie GNAR. Scott has been all over the world and witnessed some of the most face-melting ski sessions that have ever done down. His love for Squaw Valley Palisades Tahoe shines through all he does and his stories of spending time with and watching the progression of his best friend Shane McConkey are absolutely golden. Scott's affinity for surfing in freezing cold Lake Tahoe during the winter is weird and fascinating. Scott is a world-class skier in his own right and is still crushing it at 52-years-old. Scott is truly an inspiration and what he's seen go down in the ski world is intensely unique. We're taking this week off from the podcast, we'll be right back into again next week, and I wanted to give you a quick update on some of the amazing guests we have coming up this season Coming up on the podcast this season we have: Legendary Professional Freeskier Ingrid Backstrom. The conversation I had with her went deep and we pulled out some really pivotal turning points in her life including how Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington may have been a key to her successful professional freeskiing career, how she has changed after her brother Arne passed away, and how losing her passport put her in the ski movies. Matchstick Productions Filmer and Editor Scott Gaffney. Hearing Scott go over how the Game of GNAR came to be is pretty hilarious along with his funny stories from all the time he spent with his best friend Shane McConkey, his Lake Tahoe surfing addiction is also super interesting. PhD Psychologist & ski mountaineer Russ Costa who goes over Decision Fatigue, avalanche heuritics, how altitude effects the brain, and we basically cover why people do dumb shit in the mountains. Olympic Gold Medal Ski Racer and Alasaka helisking legend Tommy Moe sat down with us and told us all about his gold medal experiece, how it profoundly changed his life, we talking partying too much at times, and all kinds of Alaska heliskiing and mountain guiding in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Shane McConkey is a true legend, and I think the words of the dude who suggested diving into his incredible life sums up this episode best, "Yo what up my dawg strider, me and my dawgs have recently been hyping up some short term history which we feel could be addressed in a very dank manner on the pod. We are all free skiers and idolize the potential GOAT of the free-skiing community; Shane McConkey, the all time sender who may have single handedly guided the “send-mentality” of action sports. If you don’t know who this is we highly recommend dedicating your next 20 or 30 minutes to recognizing how dank this dude was. I think an ep on him could really help increase the general hype from the boys and get them fired up on having a mentality of sending it and having a good time with the squad." Chris Davenport - Legendary Freeskier, Ski Mountaineer, Mountain Guide - | Brought to you by Alta Ski Area “We decided we would go rally this [borrowed] Nissan Pathfinder around in the deep snow and just see what it was capable of, and we ended up upside down on the roof, we flipped it, crashed it, hit a telephone pole, everyone was ok, but we had to drive that thing to the dealership the next day and… I didn't film for Warren Miller for a couple of years after that. Big Trouble.” - Chris Davenport Chris Davenport was the world extreme skiing champion in both 1996 and 2000. He's been in over 30 Warren Miller ski movies and a multitude of other ski movies doing things like huck 100' cliffs in Alaska. Chris' ski mountaineering achievements are unparalleled. He was the first to ski all 54 of Colorado's 14,000' peaks in a single year. The guy even skied the Lhotse face at 27,000' in the shadow of Mt. Everest. Oh, and then he summited Everest while guiding. No biggie. Chris is also an author, a TV commentator, a professional speaker, a professional mountain guide, a first descent aficionado, and an all-around good guy. In this episode, Chris & Miles discuss skiing the Lhotse face, climbing Mt. Everest, Chris' favorite mountain ranges to ski, skiing all 54 of Colorado's 14,000' peaks within 1-year, climate change, ski guiding, Chris' favorite books, Chris' funniest accidents, the glory days of extreme skiing contests, and much more. Chris Davenport answers these insightful questions: Best part/worst part of summiting Mt. Everest? What was it like skiing the Lhotse Face at 27,000'? The 14er project was a genius idea, Chris. How did you come up with this concept? What was it like skiing in the glory days of the extreme contests against Shane McConkey and crew? Have you ever been in an avalanche? What happened? What evidence of climate change have you seen in your lifetime? Tell us about writing the legendary book " 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America". How has your body changed over your career and what are you doing differently now to stay in great shape? Why did you stop starring in the big ski movies? Where do is your favorite place to ski? “I love to go wherever it's good…I'm just gonna list out my favorite places: The Chugach mountains of Alaska, The Coast Range of British Columbia, The island of Hokkaido in Japan, Aspen Snowmass where I live in the elk mountains right here, The San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado, the Tetons of Wyoming and Idaho, the Swiss Alps, and to a degree the French Alps as well, and the Dolomites of Italy, I skied my first trip in Morocco, in the Atlas Mountains last spring… That place is Stunning, and then Portillo Chile… the Antarctic Peninsula, one of the greatest destinations for ski touring in the world.” - Chris Davenport Many more... Alright I'm amped guys - on today's show I have Cody Townsend, who is truly one of the outdoor and adventure world's most ambitious and accomplished personalities. The quintessential adventurepreneur, Cody not only resides atop the list of pro skier royalty for his mind-bending descents and unprecedented ski mountaineering projects, but also owns an outdoor company and thinks like a true innovator. And before I go into Cody's long list of achievements, I want to remind you that there has never been an easier time to follow in similar footsteps, or better yet carve your own path to success. Cody too started from scratch (we all do), with nothing but a burning desire to make something of himself. Don't forget that comrades. I think it's sometimes easy for us to sit and listen to stories like Cody's and say “Oh he's a special case, or I could never do that because of xyz reason.” If that narrative is bouncing around in your head, I urge you to pay special attention to how hard Cody works and listen to the 'Where there's a will there's a way' theme that runs through this episode and has gotten him to where he is. Alright with that important public service announcement out of the way, Cody is perhaps most famous for his 2014 award winning ski line in the Tordrillo Mountains of Alaska, where he shoots down a nearly impossibly narrow couloir and pops out the other side carrying speeds in the 70mph range. Video of the line got recognition from headline media such as The Today Show and countless other publications and was aptly named “The Crack,” Cody took home three wins at the Powder Awards in 2014. Shortly before his descent went viral, Cody cofounded a company called Arcade Belts, which has since gone on to become a ubiquitous brand across the outdoor industry. His most recent endeavor, aptly named the “The Fifty Project” is perhaps his most crowning achievement to date. It's a YouTube web series documenting his journey to ski mountaineer the “50 Classic Ski Descents of North America”. You may remember my conversation with Penn Newhard from a couple of episodes back, who is one of the authors of that book, which is starting to build a cult classic following, in no small part due to Cody's web series. On top of his various pursuits, Cody's just a really cool and thoughtful guy - and easily one the most motivated and dedicated athletes out there. He invited me into his home where we had a long chat about a cornucopia of topics, all of which I think you'll find compelling - I know I sure did. NOTE: This episode is part one of a two part series. Honestly, Cody's stories and insights were so interesting and useful that I think we both lost track of time, and the conversation went almost 2 and half hours. So be sure to check out Part 2 if you like what you hear here. In Part 1 we chat about a good old fashioned digital detox, surfing, the story behind the Crack, and both the glory days and future of free skiing, and in Part 2 we not only get into tons of practical and detailed advice on building your passion project, but also dive into Cody's dark period and how he reinvented himself, the genesis of the 50 project, the lessons he learned building Arcade Belts into a killer brand, and much more. Show Themes: Part 1 - Value of a good digital detox, Dealing with Fear, the culture of surfing, the glory days and future of free skiing Part 2 - Tons of practical, detailed advice on building the project you've always wanted, Death in the industry, Reinventing yourself after a big success, the transition from ski porn to backcountry ski mountaineering, genesis of the 50 project, the business of skiing (treating it like a job) , why it's easier than ever to build a successful project, how to work with and create a value proposition for sponsors and brands, becoming an entrepreneur - the story of Arcade Belts, key to building a successful project or business: talk to people figure it out, the counterintuitive philosophy on seed money for your business. Shane McConkey was the most influential skier of all time, but he was so much more than that. Husband, father, funniest guy in the room, product visionary, goofball….there are so many words but none of them can truly describe who McConkey was. On the podcast, I head to Squaw Valley for his signature snowlerblade event, take you through what that looks like, and talk to a variety of people to get some funny McConkey stories. In episode 5 we enter the white room for a deep dive with Stephan Drake, the founder of DPS Skis. Drake epitomizes the definition of a soul skier and has spent his entire life roaming the globe in search of deep snow. While most skiers think of the pursuit as a sport, Drake considers it an art that is constantly evolving and being perfected. He is a modern day powder surfing samurai with a total devotion to the craft. Drake’s dogmatic pursuit of the perfect powder experience lies at the core of his existence. The result has been some of the most revolutionary ski shapes and technology the world has ever seen. Drake leads the technology and design initiatives behind DPS Skis, the most revolutionary ski company of the last 15 years. In a parallel evolution with the powder surfing ideas of Shane McConkey, Drake is responsible for the creation of rocker in powder skis, the first prepress carbon fiber sandwich skis and the fusion of space-age carbon in groundbreaking shapes. The result is a complete reset on what the powder surfing experience truly means. In our chat Stephan reflects on his personal journey and the transcendental nature of the true powder surfing experience. It’s a philosophical exploration of what skiing is, what it means to him, and how by harnessing it’s energy we can make the world a better place. He’s a massively intelligent person who provides listeners with intriguing insights into one of the most revolutionary characters in the history of skiing. Fascinated by Stephan Drake and DPS Skis? JT Holmes is a world-class professional skier and aerial athlete. Holmes grew up on the slopes of Squaw Valley and as a 15-year-old fell in with freeskiing legend Shane McConkey. McConkey taught Holmes that existence as a professional skier was a possibility .... and that anything was possible in life. Holmes has never turned back. A tremendously focused person, Holmes knew from a young age that he always wanted to be a professional skier. This passion has never faded and sits at the core of his existence. While skiing has always been his first love, his career has been a boundless exercise in the possibilities of gravity-fed passions. Skiing led to base jumping, which led to ski base jumping and in recent years, speed flying. A Red Bull and GoPro athlete, Holmes is a pioneer in freeskiing and high-flying aerial pursuits. Beyond his pursuit of these gravity-fed sports, Holmes has carved out a role as a Hollywood stuntman, with highly-acclaimed aerial work in Transformers 3, Hangover 3, Godzilla, Fast and Furious 7, The Amazing Spider Man 2, and more. However, Holmes career has not come without a cost. While his personal and professional passions have given him the ultimate in athletic fulfillment, it has also take the lives of his two closest friends. It was a tremendous honor to sit down and chat with Holmes. A soulful guy who is tremendously intelligent, Holmes shares unflinching and open insights into the motivations behind one of the most accomplished mountain adventure athletes in the world. We're grateful for the inspiration that JT has provided a generation of mountain athletes and we hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did. Inspired by JT? For most of JT Holmes’ 20+ years as a professional athlete, he’s been looked at as a pro skier and he still has that title. These days JT moonlights as a wingsuit pilot, off-road racer, and stuntman, all at a professional level. He’s worked to achieve some great things in the mountains, air, and on the big screen over the years while experiencing more loss (people doing what they love) than anyone I know. JT lives in a world of risk and he gets ‘real’ talking about death, his avalanche, and his career in general. JT Holmes Show Notes 2:58: JT’s racing career is coming together and he’s winning. Cinema Throwdown is the only podcast featuring a showdown of cinematic proportions. Each week, hosts Jacob and Annie challenge each other to watch a movie and break it down in an endless movie watching struggle. This week, Annie pushes Jacob off a cliff with the biographical documentary McConkey. Jacob and Annie watched the extremely charismatic and stunty performer Shane McConkey in the documentary that shares his name. In 2009, McConkey took it one jump too far and met a tragic end. However, both hosts agree that he lived a full and exciting life at 100 miles per hour. Annie looks on the bright side and offers a ski lodge party theme with the return of Annie's Party Central. On this episode of the "Sponsored" podcast, presented by Powder Radio, host Mike Powell interviews Cody Townsend, who was fresh off a "jungle skiing" shoot as the stunt double for Vin Diesel. Townsend talks about how, as a kid, he followed the stars of Squaw, like Shane McConkey, JT Holmes, and Kent Kreitler, until they let them ski with him. "I literally would tail them, two or three chairs behind them, and follow them around," says Townsend. "I remember I had a pair of GS skis, and I bent up the tails with irons so that i had my first pair of twin-tips, and those guys are on fat skis on a pow day, ripping turns, and skiing lines and I would just straightline everything because I had such skinny skis on, to try to keep up with them. Eventually, that day, JT came up to me and was like, 'Dude, you got to get some fat skis.' The rest is history. JT and Kreitler took me under their wing." Townsend is also candid about his setbacks and doubt of fulfilling his dream. "I remember going to Shane McConkey's house... putting the VHS in... watching it and just wanting to cry because [my footage] was so bad," he says. "I definitely remember, man, maybe I'm not going to be a pro skier, because I suck. I was really down at that moment. This has been my dream since I was 6 years old, since I watched Scot Schmidt movies and was like, oh my God, I want to be a skier."
On this episode of the "Sponsored" podcast, presented by Powder Radio, host Mike Powell interviews Kent Kreitler, one of the pioneers of skiing in the 1990s. The two discuss his college roommate, Shane McConkey, the challenges of making it in skiing, and moving on from being a professional skier. "When I was younger I was very unafraid and very passion driven and really I loved all the middle and early parts of my career because they were so explorative. One of the biggest thrills for me was being a pioneer," says Kreitler. "Everything you did, going to Alaska, New Zealand, going to mountain ranges that people had never skied before. So I absolutely loved that. Doug [Coombs] had a weird accident where he slipped on some ice... I had been through a major injury, and I was like, 'What are my goals at this point? What have I achieved? And where do I take it from here? And there wasn't that much left for me at that time."
