Gordi Eaton is a legend in the ski industry, and while many people don't know his name, because he was born in 1939, he's had a huge impact in the development of modern ski technology. Before he was involved in helping to bring sidecut, shape, top shape, rocker, and so much more tech to the table, Gordi was an Olympian on the first Bob Beattie-created US Ski Teams that featured athletes like Bill Marolt and Buddy Werner. Then, after coaching at the highest level, Gordi became K2's Race Director, a sales rep, and more. On the podcast, we discuss coming up with no grooming or releasable bindings, putting the Mahre Brothers on K2, and his history with George Torme and Bode Miller. I appreciate the work you do both on sustainability, but mindful of the difficulties that skiers in the north/Scotland have with train travel. Andy Aitkenhead: "I found the recent episode on Andermatt and Vail Resorts of interest - I was in Andermatt just before the deal was announced. I'm heading to Engelberg in just over a week. I'm currently wrestling over travel - given my concerns around climate change. Currently my calculations are that it will be cheaper to fly. In the skiing universe, Chris Davenport is a household name. His notoriety is due in part to the many facets of the sport upon which he's had a lasting impact. He raced for New Hampshire's Holderness Academy and the University of Colorado before transitioning to freeskiing and winning world championships in 1996 and 2001. He became one of the first American Red Bull athletes and found his way into more than 30 ski films. And that just scratches the surface of Dav's decades of dominance. He eventually moved on from competitive freeskiing to focus on high-profile backcountry objectives like skiing all of Colorado's 54 14,000-foot peaks in less than a year, then skiing the 100 highest peaks in the state. He authored a book about the 14ers project and co-authored Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America. Today, Dav applies his decades of experience and passion for skiing in a multitude of ways. He's a ski guide, television host and announcer, and ski entrepreneur. Most recently, he's taken on a role at Peak Skis alongside Bode Miller, bringing decades in the industry to his focus on design and innovation. But nothing is what it seems. Sherman & Wedge tell the untold story of one of the most shocking police shootings in American history where nothing is what it seems.
Episode 38 – Bode Miller interview, United States Olympic Skier
Phil McNichol, former coach of Bode Miller, Ted Ligety, Daron Rahlves, now High Performance Director of Alpine Canada, and Olympian Gar Trayner, Director of Sport Education for US Ski and Snowboard, share their viewpoints in this engaging conversation on how to best support children through their progression in the ski racing world through their development into young adults. Hosts Martin, Jeff, and Cara share their “Thoughts of the Day”.
Bode Miller - The Winningest American Male Ski Racer of All-Time | Brought to you by Sun Valley Resort On Fear: “I don't think I have a lot of fear. I think I'm very respectful of the mountains and understand the danger that's inherently there. The unpredictable nature of being in the mountains and snow conditions and I think I have a healthy dose of awareness, but I wouldn't call it fear. It's more understanding that you're constantly putting yourself in environments that are unforgiving. Fear is more of a mindset. I don't consider myself afraid." - Bode Miller On Danger: “When I was eight, I was following two local ski bums who I guess I would call them my friends, but they were 20 years older than me probably. I don't know that they would have called me their friend at that time. But I just chased them around the mountain all the time. I watched a guy walk out of a pair of MRR bindings, old markers and go straight into a beach tree at like 50 miles an hour. No helmet. I was the first one there because I was just 200 yards behind him, and he was just exploded. His head was just apart, still bubbling breath. That was a pretty nasty eye-opener. He passed away while I was right there." - Bode Miller Bode Miller is the winningest American male ski racer of all time. Bode has won 6 Olympic Medals - 1 of them a gold medal. He's podiumed 79 times on the World Cup with 33 of those podiums being 1st place. He's won 2 World Cup Overall Titles. He's one of only 5 men in history to have won world cup events in all 5 alpine ski disciplines. And he's the only skier with five or more victories in each discipline. What I found out in this podcast is that Bode is a general all-around mountain badass who has been most everywhere and done most everything in the mountains including getting caught in gnarly avalanches, throwing misty 720s, and double front flips, and losing over 50 friends and acquaintances in the mountains. His stories are one of a kind and so is he. In this episode, Bode & Miles discuss skiing in the Olympics, skiing on the World Cup, losing friends in the mountains, throwing a 360º in competition, his "CBS 60-minutes" hung-over skiing controversy, the dangers of ski racing, and much more. Bode Miller answers these heavy questions: Which ski racing discipline is your favorite and why? How dangerous is ski racing? I've heard you say in the past: "I'm amazed more people don't die ski racing". What makes you say that? How do ski racers make money? Is a good system in place? I recently watched the movie "American Downhiller" and they really focused on the rivalry between Americans and Europeans in male world cup ski racing. What did you experience in your ski racing career in Europe? Are you the only ski racer in history to have thrown a 360º on the racecourse in World Cup competition? Are performance-enhancing drugs prevalent in ski racing? What was it like partying in the Olympic Village? Have you ever been in an avalanche? What happened? What's your biggest accomplishment in life? What challenges you most intellectually on a daily basis? What's your favorite book or books? More... Aubrey Marcus (), Founder/CEO of ONNIT and host of the popular Aubrey Marcus Podcast joins The Brink of Midnight Podcast with John Brenkus. If you take a first glance at Austin, Texas native, Aubrey Marcus, and what he's been able to create with his company, podcast, new clothing brand, and forthcoming book, you immediately pick up on his mission of human optimization and vibe of living big every day. But that's only the half of it. As any top performer in sport, business, and life will attest, the mental and spiritual game is the foundation from which everything flows. Aubrey is no different and in this unique conversation, he graciously gets very vulnerable as we go on a journey inward through the darkness, struggle, transformation, and rise that he's experienced through intense self-study and helping others discover and optimize their unique gifts. A gifted athlete and thinker with influences from family in the fields of business, homeopathy, and athletics, one might assume that Aubrey succeeded out of the gate. However, through a combination of circumstances, he found himself lost and spinning into the darkness of heavy partying and complacency. A key friendship with Olympic skier, Bode Miller, and the desire to turn his life around laid the foundation for his process-oriented "warrior ethos". ONNIT was born out of Aubrey's redefining the foundation of his life - one rooted in self-discovery, transformation, growth, optimization, and choosing to be one's best. We explore Aubrey's orientation to the world, the universe, God, and transcendence. He also shares his powerful suggestions on how to shift perspective subtly so we can analyze our choices, thought patterns, and tap into what parts of us carry our highest wisdom. Get ready for this spiritual and tactical download of ideas to, as Aubrey puts it: own your day and own your life! Erik Schlopy, 3x Olympic Skier and former World Cup ski racer joins The Brink of Midnight Podcast. Erik Schlopy is a walking miracle and may even be part super hero. "Schlopes" is a three-time Olympic alpine skier for Team USA, World Champion, 7-time National Champion, and last year, was inducted into the USA Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. Considered an innovator for Team USA skiing, he helped establish Team USA's European training base in Austria with teammate Bode Miller and has been credited for advancing the "double stack" structure for ski bindings that allows ski racers to travel at greater speeds. He's also married to one of our previous podcast guests, Olympic swimmer, Summer Sanders. Erik is indestructible. He has not one, but several remarkable comeback stories. He made his second Olympic team cobbling together race wins and points after being ranked dead last in the world. He's experienced crashes that will send chills down your spine, and has come back strong from an unthinkable list of injuries. He's even survived a deadly avalanche in the famed Alaskan Chugach mountains...and that's only a few stories among many. Erik's collection of accomplishments and comebacks will blow you away, but what is perhaps most striking are his abilities to never give up and to let instinct take over when it's needed most. In this conversation, we go on an unreal adventure exploring Erik's journey and hone in on what it takes to both survive and perform when the deck is stacked against you. Sit back, listen, and enjoy the wild ride of Erik's life and hard-earned lessons. You just might leave this conversation feeling a little more like a super hero!
