From skateboarding to rock climbing, Simon Whittle touched all the bases when it came to his beginnings in extreme sports, but the real hook came when his UK parents bought him his introduction into the world of skydiving in the form of a static line course. The UK being what it is, it took Simon a very long time to start racking up any real jump experience, but where the sky failed, the tunnel filled the gap. Working his way through the ranks as a tunnel instructor, by the time Simon found himself back under nylon, it had been close to 8 years, and he was ready for more. With a drastic change of profession and location he headed off to the Middle East, which turned out to be exactly the move he needed. Now Skydiving Instructor, BASE Jumper, and believe it or not, Skysurfer, Simon Whittle is well and truly locked into his path with the Lunatic Fringe.

348: What happens when leaders stop asking questions? In this episode of Lead in 30, you'll discover how a lack of curiosity can impede collaboration, shrink networks, and stifle innovation. Drawing from my experiences with senior executive teams, I'll share stories and observations that illustrate the remarkable impact of curiosity on both personal and organizational growth.Listen to the tales of two striking in-flight encounters—an adrenaline-pumped base jumper and a focused Chick-fil-A franchise owner—that reveal the broader issue of a "kiss the ring" mentality. Despite their fascinating lives and careers, these individuals showed little interest in engaging deeply with others. These experiences underscore the critical importance of curiosity in leadership. One thing I've learned about climbing over the years is that you never really know when something might go wrong, that human error and the randomness of nature are something we as climbers can't really avoid. So instead we prepare ourselves to deal with the unknown, to come equipped with the tools necessary both physical and mental to rescue either ourselves or others when things go wrong. Remember that story that was all over the news a few months ago, about a climber who had rescued a base jumper who crashed, hanging precariously on a cliff? Today we get to sit down with the climber herself, River Barry. We dive deep into the details of her heroic rescue on that fateful day and find out what we are all capable of when preparedness, training, and experience all come together. Christopher 'Douggs' Mcdougall is a professional base jumper & wing suit pilot. Tumbling from earths scariest peaks has afforded Douggs some of the highest highs, however they have been closely accompanied by the lowest of lows. Losing his partner in what he describes as an 'avoidable' jumping accident at over 200km/h as well as over 100 friends in his time. The lows sent him into a spiralling depression fuelled by alcohol abuse & illicit substances before he found hope & turned his life around. Douggs describes his new path as a life 're-purposed' to serve others & promote the art of living. This ep covered his personal experience with FEAR, LOSS & PURPOSE in an incredibly profound & inspiring way. In this podcast, we discuss steps to maintain a high-performance, high-energy lifestyle as we get older. More specifically, creating a life where you feel great, more fulfilled, and more joyful as well as creating a legacy with not just your wealth but your health and outlook on life for generations to come. Our audience is high-performing professionals and pilots, BUT we all go through times where we are not performing at our peak; mentally, spiritually, physically. Especially as we age... Now is a unique and stressful time for airline pilots, corporate, cargo, and commercial pilots. Most major airlines are under contract negotiations –stressful! Flights have been full, chronically late with angry passengers. Flying has not been a fun place to be in the last 2 years –post-Covid. Ron Broyles is our guest today because he is walking the walk. He is 69 and full of life, energy, joy, and fulfillment. How do we as pilots maintain the mental and emotional toughness to maintain our quality of lives, enjoy our families and feel a sense of joy and peace during these difficult airline times? Why bother with health, nutrition, positive mental attitude? We are in a race...we are meant for growth. It is as if we are in a highly competitive game or fighting for our peace of mind, focus, finances, health, and joy and we don't even know it. Every entity in our lives is fighting against us having those things, and we are not fighting back. We know this as being intentional or proactive. Marketing agencies, social media, news media are fighting for your time, money, attention –your mind and they are playing with PhD level minds and huge supplies of money. We are not equipping ourselves to win! We need to be intentional about training to win the fight. We need to take proactive, aggressive steps to live a life of purpose on purpose. Why not? Choose your “hard”...Life is hard when you eat right and exercise and choose to be joyful. Life is much harder when you simply drift along allowing life to happen to you. You will leave a legacy in every aspect of your life whether you know it or not. Your health is your wealth! Seven practical steps for maintaining physical, spiritual, and mental health: Realize you are one or two choices away each day for either building a great life or living a life of mediocrity or worse chronic unhappiness and bad health. Healthy relationships and accountability partnerships. Ask someone to help you stay on track. Similar to AA and Weight watchers. More importantly, someone you can share your feelings with –seriously! Men are especially bad at this and it's bad for your health. Get a workout instructor. See a counselor. Don't minimize your emotional health – Do not try to John Wayne through it! Be intentional about the feelings you want – Happy, joyful, peace, love, anger... Studies have even shown that unhealthy anger in its repressed state has been linked to cancer. Sigmund Freud – “unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways.” This is one of the most underestimated keys to our quality of life. Nutrition - Read the labels on your food and understand what you are eating. You can't outwork your bad eating habits as you get older! An attitude of gratitude leads to a healthy life! Write down three things a day Give! Give away some of your money, some of your time or both. Your perspective will change. The importance of physical activity and exercise!

"What makes the difference between the ones who succeed and those who fail? Why do some choose to quit while others come back even stronger when facing adversity? Today’s story with Karina Hollekim answers these questions in an incredible way. Karina Hollekim is an international keynote speaker, author, computer programmer, and professional athlete where she competed for Red Bull as a big mountain skier and Base jumper. Karina is a truly inspirational female pioneer, being the first woman in the world to perform a ski BASE jump. Karina shares her story about those moments that change our lives forever, about raw willpower and passion. She inspires us to be targeted as living proof of the importance of little changes and how they make a difference in the long run. By raising awareness of our choices, she challenges our willingness to change. She shows the importance of stretching your comfort zone to achieve your goals. Karina’s incredible journey, her gripping story about struggle and resilience together with her indomitable spirit makes a story to remember. In 2006, Karina’s life was turned upside down when she had a freak, near-fatal skydiving accident, leaving her in a wheelchair with the low odds of ever walking again. After 20 surgeries and years of relearning how to walk, she’s returned to skiing and is living life to the fullest today. Her autobiography ‘The Wonderful Feeling of Fear’ is internationally published and her speech is part of the exclusive group of TedX talks. Karina’s coaching skills comes from a background in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Active Commitment Therapy, and working as a performance consultant since 2012, with clients ranging from professional athletes to top business executives. Her ability to push boundaries, stay focused, and re-mobilize through hardship are core qualities she transmits through her coaching & speaking and serves as key themes all throughout her life story.
Matt is a BASE Jumper and deep thinker. In this episode, he proposes the unlikely position that is essentially; "If you are going to jump off the bridge, at least let me come with you. At least share with me your thoughts before you go." This is an incredible shift from the typical response that is "Please dont do it! I beg you! You can't! Think of how sad your mom will be!". We also go really deep into the dynamics of communication that lead people to feel isolated emotionally and might even lead to their suicide - as well as the types of communication that might lead them away from the edge. We also talk about being enslaved by existence and how freeing of an act suicide really is, and how considering suicide might actually help people choose life. It's a crazy and powerful episode and the first one on which I actually cry. Its sad as fuck to think about how many millions of people think about, struggle with, attempt or succeed in killing themselves each year. Something is certainly broken here, my friends, and my heart breaks in response to it. Find matt at www.blanketstunts.com and on IG and stuff and stuff. On this episode, we learn how a single moment at the age of 25 changed the trajectory of Miles' life, as well as the importance of taking calculated risks and having a lust for life.
Mike Wilson is an athlete with elite ability and you can say he "made it" in the world of action sports. You can also say that Mike didn’t achieve his full potential. Mike has always marched to the beat of his own drummer and while some athletes choose to be team players, Mike was more of a lone wolf. People thought he was a loose cannon and maybe he is. On the podcast Mike tells his story and he has no filter. Jeb is one of the world's best known BASE-jumpers and wingsuit pilots. He has made more than 1,000 jumps including the Eiffel Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge and Angel falls to name a few. He is featured in a documentary called Fearless: The Jeb Corliss Story. Some interesting insights from this episode: Learn how he was diagnosed with counterphobia at an early age which made him want to confront his fears head on. “The only limits on you are the ones you place upon yourself.” Base-jumping saved him from a life of depression. It was the first time he truly felt happy. Getting over fear is like building muscle. You have to slowly build up a tolerance for fear so you can eventually do terrifying things. Hear about one of the most terrifying jumps he's ever done. Hear how he was able to survive an “unsurvivable” crash. It took years of suffering following a near-death accident to one day allow him to derive more pleasure from the simple things in life than jumping off any mountain.
