They set the background of Nephi's witness of Christ in these chapters. They discuss what it means to rejoice in Christ and prophecy of Christ. They explore the necessity of grace in being saved, and the need to turn to Christ and fully rely on Him. They delve into what it means to be reconciled to God. They emphasize how important it is to have Christ as the central focus of our lives and worship, and to testify of Him. They discuss how we can and must rejoice in Christ, and how we are seeing an emphasis on finding joy in Christ and the gospel. They also explore how Christ suffered for all, and salvation is available to all. They compare our parental roles with what we can learn about God, and how patient He is with all of us, and how mighty to save He is with all of us. Jonah was called on a mission very similar to that of other prophets: he was to cry repentance to a people ripening in iniquity. Unlike other prophets, however, Jonah responded by attempting to flee from his assignment. Had his reason been cowardice, though still wrong, it would have been understandable. The brutality of the Assyrians in the treatment of their enemies was well known. But Jonah's problem does not seem to be cowardice. Rather, it seems to have been resentment against the Lord for giving the hated enemy a chance to repent (see Jonah 4:1–2.)” (Old Testament Student Manual: 1 Kings–Malachi, 3rd ed. [Church Educational System manual, 2003], 97).“While we are grateful for second chances following mistakes, or failures of the mind, we stand all amazed at the Savior's grace in giving us second chances in overcoming sin, or failures of the heart. No one is more on our side than the Savior. … To become like Him will require countless second chances in our day-to-day struggles with the natural man, such as controlling appetites, learning patience and forgiveness, overcoming slothfulness, and avoiding sins of omission, just to name a few. If to err is human nature, how many failures will it take us until our nature is no longer human but divine? Thousands? More likely a million.” (2018–A:21, Lynn G. Robbins, Until Seventy Times Seven)“When Jonah was sent to the city of Nineveh to warn them of their destruction because of wickedness, they repented in sackcloth and ashes, and by decree all in that city fasted and prayed. Their flocks and herds were also required to do without food and drink. God accepted this display of repentance and humility through fasting and prayer and turned aside his anger and the city was not destroyed  Jonah 3:5-10 It seems to me that if a city could obtain such a blessing by fasting and prayer, a nation also could be similarly blessed of God. We as a people, by emphasizing this principle, could obtain great blessings for ourselves and for the Church in general.” (1951–O:123, Delbert L. I was told that a drunk driver had crashed his car through the glass into the lobby of a bank. When the bewildered driver saw the security guard with his weapon brandished, he cried, “Don't shoot! I'm a Mormon!”The inebriated driver was discovered to be a member of my ward, baptized only recently. As I waited to speak to him in the bishop's office, I planned what I would say to make him feel remorseful for the way he had broken his covenants and embarrassed the Church. But as I sat looking at him, I heard a voice in my mind say, just as clearly as if someone were speaking to me, “I'm going to let you see him as I see him.” And then, for a brief moment, his whole appearance changed to me. I saw not a dazed young man but a bright, noble son of God. I suddenly felt the Lord's love for him. That vision changed our conversation. It also changed me.” (2017–A:82, Henry B. Why, why do I have this tragedy of a grandson who seems to have destroyed his life?” The answer came to her mind in these words: “I gave him to you because I knew you could and would love him no matter what he did.” There is a wonderful lesson for us all. … Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son love all of God's children no matter wh

More important than acquiring fame or fortune is being what God wants us to be. Before we came to this earth, we may have been fashioned to do some small good in this life that no one else can do. The Lord said to Jeremiah, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations”  If God has a work for those with many talents, I believe he also has an important work for those of us who have few.”[1994–A:4, James E. He has chosen the time and place for each of us to be born so we can learn the lessons we personally need and do the most good with our individual talents and personalities.” (Gospel Principles, Chapter 2 Our Heavenly Father, para. 5)“[Remember] the new star that announced the birth at Bethlehem? It was in its precise orbit long before it so shone. We are likewise placed in human orbits to illuminate. Divine correlation functions not only in the cosmos but on this planet, too. After all, the Book of Mormon plates were not buried in Belgium, only to have Joseph Smith born centuries later in distant Bombay. … God, who oversees the interlacings of galaxies, stars, and worlds, asks us to confess His hand in our personal lives, too!” (2002 October, Neal A. Our stewardships - the good and the bad are tailor made for us, so don't bother with comparison. D. This whole process of stewarding is what the path to being more like God looks like. This week's challenge: What are you struggling with right now in your life - a child? a relationship? a health issue? Ganel-Lyn had a mom and sister who struggled with mental health challenges, and her sister finally chose suicide. She shares key tips and ideas for both family members and those who struggle. Episode Discussion PointsWe all need connection with others. Getting ready for empty-nesting and entering a new phase is challenging (and she is kind of mourning that change). Wishes she knew more about parenting adult children How when she was a young mom it was so hard and so slow, and now that her kids are grown she feels like it sped by in the blink of an eye. She is blessed to have a very busy life outside of mothering that will keep her busy now. She has given herself permission to go back to therapy and not have everything planned and sorted out (which is new for her). The blocks analogy of life through this life transition. How she is a perfectionist “in recovery” who used to think if she was perfect she could fix those around her and protect them from their challenges. She grew up with a desire to put things in order. Dealing with Mental Health & SuicideShe has a mom who deals with severe mental health issues, and a sister died by suicide. Suicide grief is difficult and complex to deal with, and helped her realize the importance of accepting the parts of her that are broken. Jesus is the only one who can save. “I am not responsible for saving someone else.” “Everyone on the planet either struggles with mental health or loves someone who does.” “Every day I wake up and I check in with my mental health.” “Suicide is really bad exhaustion of the soul,” where they think the world would be better off without them, and wanting the pain of the soul to stop. “Hope is doing the next plan B.” You have been through hard things before and you will get through this hard thing now. For those struggling with pain, find the tool that will work that day. Choose to stay in your body. “Suicide changes your other choices.” “I love Therapy! It is education for your mind and your relationships.” How to Help Loved Ones with Mental Health ChallengesAsk a middle age man how he is doing (and do show you with emojis). “The opposite of addiction is connection.” So watch for loved ones who isolate. Have a list of 5 “SOS friends” you can call when you are in crisis. These are people you love and trust, and you have planned that you can call/text when you are in need. These are people who have gone through hard times. Ask friends in need, “What does support look like for you?” Often people just need to be heard--go on a walk or drive with them and just listen. What do they need? Drop of dry cleaning? Go to a movie? You only need 1-2 really good support people. If you feel you don't have anyone, go to God and ask Him who needs you? “There is a resiliency skill in service.” The Stewardship PrincipleHer new book https://www.amazon.com/Stewardship-Principle-Reframing-Your-Life/dp/1524421952/ (The Stewardship Principle—)everything we own or experience—God is asking us to watch over it, not own it. Stewardship vs. Ownership principles and what it looks like. Don't compare—we each have different stewardships! Gratitude for “hard times” which now she gives back as “offerings.” Often the people you show up for, show up for you. “if we are to receive all that [God] has, our capacity has to increase.” Mental Health Checkup IdeasTherapy: If you haven't found a good therapist, post on social media and find one that works for you. This can include talk therapy, EMDR (helps with trauma), massage therapy (which she does regularly), Light Therapy, Physical Movement/Exercise Rest Drinking Water Don't over-schedule yourself when you are coming into busy times when you need to process change. Journaling—sometimes she can't say the words, so she writes. And sometimes she writes prayers to God. (And you can have a journal where you tear out or burn the pages afterwards.) Others are visual, obvious, and that people sustain. 17:30 Ganel-Lyn shares her own stewardships and personal losses 18:50 Different stewardships are more intense but others that are more quiet are equally important. 21:00 The opposite of stewardship is ownership. The quickest way to understand stewardship is parenting. 23:00 Examples of stewardship vs ownership. Ownership starts to take away agency in parenting and in leadership. 27:00 How do you tell if you have an ownership mentality? Comparison Control Burnout Praying away someone else's agency Being hyper focused on outcomes 29:30 Stewardship thinking is offering based. Ownership thinking is outcome focused. 32:15 How can we refocus on stewardship and let go of ownership? 38:00 We have calling changes and pass the stewardship around. That way we don't stay stuck in traditions and get introduced to new perspectives. 39:15 So many people have left our church because they were in ownership mode for so long. We do so much ‘'doing'' and it doesn't always turn out. 40:20 Ask your child, your companion, or people in your ward what support looks like. 41:30 Kurt shares a story about stewardship 44:15 When we start to see what our friends and family are going through as a stewardship, it allows us to validate them more but also helps us understand that we don't have to fix it or save them. 44:50 Understanding stewardship doesn't take away the pain or hurt from a situation but it teaches us that God is not punishing us. The hard thing that you are going through can still be consecrated for your good. 47:55 Dealing with infertility and all the rude things that people say. People act as if we are more righteous then it will solve our problems. 49:00 The story of Job. All of Job's friends had opinions on why he was losing everything. We can have hope though because everything that Job lost was returned plus more. 51:10 Stewardship doesn't always have to be hard. Stewardship helps you appreciate the good stuff too. 54:00 We don't have to be everything for everyone. Our stewardships can be very different at different times in our lives and we shouldn't compare our stewardships with others. 57:15 Don't underestimate how your stewarding is influencing and inspiring others in their own stewardships. 1:00:50 Remember that Christ owns it. He has just entrusted you with this stewardship. She and and her husband are the parents to four girls and live in Utah. Color Corps (0:00:00) When you're walking through a city, you see a lot of gray –gray skyscrapers, gray sidewalk, and a dark gray street. But how does it make you feel when you see a colorful mural that breaks through the dull city monotony? Painting giant, colorful murals is part of what Project Color Corps does, a nonprofit organization dedicated to using the power of color to bring energy into neighborhoods and cities. Today, we're joined by Laura Guido-Clark, founder of Project Color Corps, here to talk with us about their work and the power of color to change a community.   Staging Your Home (0:16:17) You just packed everything into the moving van. Looking at your empty house with no furniture can be depressing, but you might not want to spend the money on getting it staged for showings. When you are moving out of your house, there are all sorts of costs that pile up. Should you include staging as one of them? To discuss this topic, we've invited Jen Martin, professional organizer, stager, and founder of Reset Your Nest.   The Power of Mental Health Days (0:34:45) Over the past couple years, we've seen a lot of progress in the way we view and deal with mental health. It's a great thing that we all know more about it and can talk about things more openly, but unfortunately that doesn't mean we've found a solution. There's still a lot of fear that we or a loved one will discover they suffer from a mental illness. We often feel like there should be more we can do to make the situation better for everyone involved. That's why we invited Hailey Hardcastle onto the show. She's an activist who helps destigmatize mental illness. Recently, she successfully lobbied to make it legal for students in Oregon to take mental health days.   Summer Hairstyles (0:52:48) Although this summer might be in a lot of ways like no other summer we've ever had—the heat at least has remained constant. And with that heat, comes a desire to trim and lighten your hair. I know those of you with long hair are probably eyeing a pair of scissors and thinking about chopping it all off while others are considering a switch from brunette to blonde. But before you make any big changes, let's find out what hairstyles are going to be hip and cool during the next few months. Here to tell us all about how you should cut and style your luscious locks this summer is celebrity hair stylist Kiyah Wright.   Talking to Kids about Feelings (1:13:45) With the rollercoaster of happenings in the world around us, most of us are also experiencing a rollercoaster of feelings. And our poor kids are along for that ride. Emotions are hard to navigate period, so how can we possibly help our kids navigate them with all of the added change and disappointment going on right now? To help us with this, we've called on our friend, Ganel-Lyn Condie. Ganel-Lyn is a motivational speaker who works to help people find joy in their lives. Let's figure out how to talk with our kids about their feelings and help them find joy with her.   Tackling Adolescent Curiosity (1:27:59) Don't you just love it when your kid questions “Why” every time you tell them something? Sometimes it's annoying, and other times it's endearing because it shows their curiosity. All children have this eagerness to learn about the world around them. And although we often hear the phrase “Curiosity killed the cat,” sometimes curiosity leads to wonderful discoveries. So, how can we foster it in kids? Well today, we have Dr. Carl Pickhardt, a licensed psychologist with over 30 years of experience, here with us to discuss the best way we can approach our adolescents' curiosity.

CoachArt (0:00:00)Between homework, sports, and extracurricular activities... school is a hustle for every kid. But for those who live with a serious chronic illness, time spent between hospital visits and home checkups usually doesn't allow them to participate in any of the extracurriculars offered at their schools which can leave them feeling left out. This is what inspired the creation of CoachArt, an online service dedicated to connecting children with chronic illnesses to volunteer coaches and mentors. Today we're joined by Greg Harrell-Edge, executive director of CoachArt, to discuss the mission of this nonprofit and how thousands of kids have been able to live their dreams beyond the classroom.  Dropping Comparison (0:15:16)We've all been there: we're having a good day, going about our usual routine, and then BAM... comparison strikes. Maybe we start comparing our clothes to our friend's, our camping trip to someone's European vacation, or our job to another's. We know comparing ourselves to other people will never make us happy. But it's so hard to snap ourselves out of it. So, we invited friend of the show, Michelle McCullough, to talk us through how to drop comparisons and be happier. Michelle is the author of “The HappyIST” and a seasoned speaker on finding more happiness and success in life.  Organizing to Save (0:33:38)Life is messy and disorganized. So, it's not surprising that often our homes are disorganized as well with forgotten groceries in the fridge and laundry piling up so we're doing 6 loads in one day. But your disorganization might be costing you more than you think. So, what can we do? Rosemarie Groner went from being chronically disorganized her whole life to saving $23,000 dollars a year by organizing her home and meal planning. She started her blog The Busy Budgeter to help others organize their lives and she's here to help us today.  Porch Cameras (0:50:36)Porch security cameras are becoming more and more popular as people are becoming increasingly concerned about thieves known as “porch pirates.” I know I've seen videos on social media of thieves stealing things from porches, but it's hard to know if the security footage ever ends up helping police actually catch the porch pirates. On top of that, it's hard to tell if the cameras even prevent people from stealing your packages in the first place. We reached out to Dr. Ben Stickle, a professor of Criminal Justice Administration at Middle Tennessee State University, to help us decide if porch cameras really deliver on their promises to protect our belongings. Click here to find Dr. Stickle's research on property crime and crime prevention.  Being Vulnerable (1:04:46)Victor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor, said, “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” We've all been facing a situation that we cannot change, so how can we take this time to change ourselves? This is a vulnerable thing to do, but it will ultimately improve our lives. Ganel-Lyn Condie has some great ideas on how we can do this. Ganel-Lyn is a friend of the show and motivational speaker and we're happy to have her on the show today to discuss this important topic.  Building a Budget (1:26:17)Due to the Coronavirus, the economy has taken a huge hit leaving many people without jobs or with reduced paychecks. While it may not be easy, one of the best things we can do right now is establish a budget. Doing this will help reduce the negative impact of COVID-19 on our finances. We are talking with Christy Bieber, a full-time financial and legal writer, this morning. She's going to tell us the best way to go about putting together a budget during this pandemic.

Speed Riding (0:00:00) What is the riskiest thing you've ever done? All of us have done risky things in our lives: some of us have jumped off a cliff into the ocean some of us have swam with sharks and others of us have confessed their love to a complete stranger. Whatever the risk may be, these things exhilarate us and challenge our nerves. Now that we are moving into the snowy season, we'd like to talk about a new winter sport that is amping up the risk factor – it's called speed riding. We're super lucky to have JT Holmes on the show with us today, a professional multi-sport athlete who you may know from his insane videos with Red Bull or his stunt work in the Transformers movies and Furious 7. He's here to talk with us about speed riding. Public Transportation (0:12:08) There's something exciting about taking the bus. I always feel like I'm embarking on an adventure when I get into a mass transit vehicle. But how do these really affect our quality of life? If you've visited Denmark or seen Frozen on Broadway, you might know what I'm talking about. But for those who are completely lost, hygge is the Danish word that translates to mean “the art of being cozy.” Doesn't that sound nice? One great way to embrace hygge is by making your home cozy. Allison Bean from The Spruce joins us to help know exactly how do that.  Baby Names 2020 (0:50:32) With the new year, there are always fun predictions to be made.
