In this episode Dr. Jared Ball returns to the podcast. Jared Ball is a professor of communication studies at Morgan State University. He is the author of The Myth and Propaganda of Black Buying Power and I Mix What I Like!: A Mixtape Manifesto and he is the co-editor along with Dr. Todd Steven Burroughs of the book A Lie Of Reinvention: Correcting Manning Marable's Malcolm X. He is one of the founders of Black Power Media and the host of the iMiXWHATiLIKE program, which can be found on that platform. He is also a co-host of BPM's Remix morning show. This time around we focus on his work in the realm of media criticism. In particular Jared has for many years engaged in criticism around representations of Black Radical figures in both mainstream media and academic work created for the mass market. In this conversation we talk about the tactics used to distort, misrepresent, or erase entirely the legacies of figures like Malcolm X and Kwame Ture. We also get Jared's take on whether or not Judas and the Black Messiah represents a break from a history of demonization of Black revolutionaries in US mainstream media. On top of that we have a lot of fun talking about some of Jared Ball's favorite radical movies. We encourage folks to watch and support Black Power Media if you don't already, you can find them on YouTube or at BlackPowerMedia.org. And we'll include links to some of Jared Ball's work that informed this discussion. Thank you as always to all of our patrons for your support. Judas and the Black Messiah is a 2021 American biographical drama film about the betrayal of Fred Hampton (played by Daniel Kaluuya), chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in late-1960s Chicago, at the hands of William O'Neal (played by Lakeith Stanfield), an FBI informant. Jesse Plemons, Dominique Fishback, Ashton Sanders, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Lil Rel Howery, Algee Smith, Dominique Thorne, and Martin Sheen also star. The film is directed and produced by Shaka King, who wrote the screenplay with Will Berson, based on a story by the pair and Kenny and Keith Lucas. A Fred Hampton biopic had been in the works for several years, with both the Lucas brothers and Will Berson writing and shopping screenplays individually since 2014. Berson's version almost got made with F. Gary Gray directing, but, when that fell through, King was hired to direct. The cast joined in 2019, with the blessings of Hampton's family, with filming taking place that fall in Ohio. Judas and the Black Messiah premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on February 1, 2021, and was released in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on February 12, simultaneously in theaters and digitally on HBO Max. The film was lauded by critics, who praised King's direction, the performances (particularly Kaluuya's and Stanfield's), and its timely themes. The film earned six Oscar nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Stanfield, and won Best Supporting Actor for Kaluuya and Best Original Song ("Fight for You"). For his performance, Kaluuya also won Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and BAFTA Awards. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

Join me & special guest, author Jamaalkenya Ashanti (creator of Black Lab Publishing & my Father) in a discussion about the Black Panthers and what life was like in that time period. If you would like to purchase/download one of Jamaalkenya’s books you can find him on Amazon & Barnes & Nobles. Fred Hampton(Daniel Kaluuya), a young, charismatic activist, becomes Chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party - putting him directly in the crosshairs of the government, the FBI, and the Chicago Police. But to destroy the revolution, the authorities are going to need a man on the inside.
This week we talk about "Cointelpro" and the implications of the existence of this program on what it means to vocalize one's opinion in a politically charged global climate. We discuss the 2021 Academy Award nominated movie Judas & the Black Messiah. The film is a biographical portrayal of the events surrounding the death of Fred Hampton the charismatic leader of the Black Panther Party. We highlight parts of the movie that show us the role certain federal agencies played in the dismantling of what was once an intellectual movement. Cointelpro is a program manufactured by the FBI, which lists procedures for how to break dissent in organized groups of people deemed to be a divergent voice from the status quo. The practices listed in the program documents - which can be found on the FBI's vault [link below] - are painstakingly similar to how governments around the world shut down protests through infiltration, misguidance, and other disruptive tactics. In this weeks episode we discuss the recent success black British actors such as Daniel Kaluuya, Idris Elba & Damson Idris have been experiencing in America. The black British actors have been stand out in their performances in movies and tv series such as Judas & The Black Messiah, The Wire & Snowfall to name a few but not all African Americans are happy for the actors with the self proclaimed king of pan africanism Dr Umar Johnson sparking a debate by publicly expressing his irritation of iconic African American roles being played by black British actors. This has sparked major debate on social media about the topic. Do the African Americans have a point? or are they simply being bitter towards the current success the black British actors are experiencing.
