Award-winning film director, Steven Caple Jr., is fresh off his summer box office success with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Interestingly enough, he doesn't have a massive portfolio of blockbuster films under his belt. But with this accomplishment for a major Transformers franchise comes a tremendous responsibility for an incredibly gifted, Black filmmaker in the competitive world of cinema. Join us as host Eddie Robinson chats candidly with acclaimed film and television director, producer and screenwriter, Steven Caple, Jr. The Cleveland, Ohio-native calls his unguarded chat with I SEE U: “therapy—but in a good way.” He dives deep into his own journey of what led him to pursue filmmaking as a career. The first generation college graduate also shares insight into his own unique style of visual storytelling and what he believes to be actual road blocks within the industry for directors of color.

The Transformers franchise is back, but only sort of? This week on Cinemaholics, we discuss Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. The new film takes place in the 90s and departs from the mainline Transformers movies by Michael Bay. It's maybe barely a sequel to Bumblebee, the prequel we declared as the best Transformers by default in 2018. But this time around the Autobots, still led by Optimus Prime, team up with new allies inspired by the Beast Wars cartoon to stop a worldwide alien threat you probably don't care about. That said, Jon and Will don't fully see eye-to-eye on this one. So stay tuned to hear where they both ultimately land on this transformative new take on the series. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts was directed by Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II) and written by Joby Harold, Darnell Metayer, Josh Peters, Erich Hoeber, and Jon Hoeber. The cast includes Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback in live-action roles, with the voice cast including Ron Perlman, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, Liza Koshy, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Pete Davidson, Colman Domingo, Cristo Fernández, and Tongayi Chirisa. Plus longtime returning voices to the franchise: Peter Cullen, John DiMaggio, and David Sobolov. The film is being released through Paramount Pictures. Another jam-packed edition of the freshly award-losing Empire Podcast this week, folks, with three separate interviews, and four incredible guests. First, Chevalier star Kelvin Harrison Jr. talks French accents and violins with Neel Bhatt (making his pod interview debut!). Then, Eva Longoria — director of Flamin' Hot and possessor of one of the best laughs in the business — sits down on Zoom with James White to talk about her feature film directorial debut. And then Chris Hewitt is visited in studio by Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts stars Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, and gets one of them hopelessly addicted to M&S Phizzy Pigtails. Be warned: there are sounds of chewing during this interview, which we know puts some people off. Forewarned is forearmed and all that. Then, on either side of those interviews, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer to discuss which film director owns the 90s, the week's movie news (such as it is), and review Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts, Chevalier, Flamin' Hot, and Guy Ritchie's The Covenant. Enjoy!

When Dominique Fishback was first offered a role on the Prime Video series Swarm, she said no — and after talking to co-creator Donald Glover, she wound up with the lead instead. That's just one of many ways, she tells David Canfield, that she's betting on herself these days. And for Paul Walter Hauser, the experience of embodying a serial killer on the Apple series Black Bird stuck with him so deeply that he changed his entire life, including getting sober. He tells Rebecca Ford about the role's impact on his life, and the surreal awards season that has already followed. For the last decade, Dominique Fishback has been building up her resume with some stellar performances. In 2018, she appeared in the David Simon show Show Me A Hero. She parlayed that into a regular role on The Deuce. Then she played Deborah Johnson in Judas and the Black Messiah – a drama based on the true story of Black Panther Fred Hampton. The role earned her a BAFTA nomination, among other accolades. These days, you can see her on Amazon Prime's Swarm. It's a TV series created by Donald Glover and writer Janine Nabers. Fishback has the ability to command a fierce, brilliant presence on screen. She can be disarming and vulnerable in one moment, terrifying the next. Dominique Fishback joins Bullseye to talk about Swarm and Judas and the Black Messiah, and her love of journaling – a hobby that has helped her learn more about herself and the characters she portrays.

In the new Amazon Prime series Swarm, Dominique Fishback plays Dre, a socially awkward young woman who is obsessed with the mega pop star Ni'Jah, a thinly veiled analog for Beyoncé. When a life-changing event occurs, Dre's obsession with Ni'Jah takes on a more sinister tone. Donald Glover co-created the show with Janine Nabers, and it definitely shares an off-kilter vibe with his previous hit Atlanta.Subscribe to Pop Culture Happy Hour Plus at plus.npr.org/happyhour

Dominique Fishback has an open invitation to Collider Ladies Night for a number of reasons. First, she's incredibly talented and has a wild amount of range. Second, she recognizes that range and uses it by loading up her filmography with a wide variety of projects, all with complex characters that demand she flexes her acting muscles to the fullest. On top of all of that? Not only is it abundantly career that Fishback pours maximum heart and thought into her craft, but she always exudes deep passion when discussing it. There's no better Collider Ladies Night guest than that.In her latest see-it-to-believe-it production, Fishback stars as Dre in Prime Video's Swarm. Dre grew up a massive fan of pop culture icon Ni'Jah. Whereas her sister (Chloe Bailey) grew out of the fandom, Dre's obsession has intensified and now, as an adult, her dedication to Ni'Jah often sends her to extremely dark, dangerous places.Whether you're a singer, an actor, or pursuing any other craft in the entertainment industry, with success often comes celebrity, and with celebrity comes extremely passionate fans. Clearly, Ni'Jah has one in Dre in Swarm, and Fishback's amassed quite a few over the years as well.Hear all about Fishback's approach to balancing celebrity and acting, how her vision board-making process has changed, how she scored herself a producing credit on Swarm, and loads more on this edition of Collider Ladies Night! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
It isn't easy thriving in two different sectors of the entertainment industry, but Chloe Bailey is absolutely soaring as a singer and actress, right alongside her sister, Halle Bailey. In addition to finding great success as Chloe x Halle, the Bailey sisters started carving out some significant space for themselves in film and television via the ABC sitcom Grown-ish. When that show came to an end, both continued to pursue both crafts, racking up a number of impressive acting credits along the way. Halle Bailey, of course, is our new Ariel in the live-action version of The Little Mermaid, and Chloe Bailey's filmography is packed with bold titles that offer the opportunity to explore complex characters like the Netflix film, Jane, and now the new Prime Video series, Swarm. From co-creators Janine Nabers and Donald Glover, Swarm stars Dominique Fishback as Dre, a woman living with her sister (Bailey's Marissa) who grew up obsessed with a pop star called Ni'Jah and remains a diehard fan as an adult. As stated in the show's trailer, “Talk about Ni'Jah, you get stung.” Dre takes defending her idol very seriously, and it's a level of dedication that often lands Dre in very dark places. With all seven episodes of Swarm now available to stream on Prime Video, Bailey took the time to celebrate by joining us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night Pre-Party to recap her journey from her earliest acting and music ambitions to singing the National Anthem at the 2022 World Series and starring in Swarm. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
