The FBI-orchestrated murder of Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton in 1969 remains one of the most singularly evil crimes of the 20th century, and it's a story about which most Americans know very little. The 2021 film Judas and the Black Messiah, directed by Shaka King, is a heavy, detailed consideration of the events that led to Hampton's death, focusing mainly on the figure of William O'Neal, a small-time thief coerced by the FBI into becoming a confidential informant working within Hampton's organization. As Justin and I discuss in this episode, the film puts us in the center of the complicated moral calculations that defined 1960s radicalism, and asks hard questions about the price of loyalty, freedom, and revolution.   Listen to whole episode with 7 day free trial of our Patreon membership; https://www.patreon.com/posts/episode-362-and-85368710

Kicking off Black History Month, we revisit this historical crime thriller released just a year ago and starring two of today's most impressive actors, Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeish Stanfield. Kaluuya stars as Fred Hampton who was the chairman of the Black Panther Party in Illinois in the late 1960s, mostly around Chicago.  He has made quite the name for himself as an effective Civil Rights leader and as a result, is soon perceived by the FBI at the time as a potential threat.  Stanfield plays Bill O'Neill who is a local Chicagoan recruited by the FBI to infiltrate the local Black Panthers to help take them down.  Of course, O'Neill starts to befriend Hampton and tensions build as both Hampton's influence grows as do the FBI's plans to stop him.Shaka King directs this searing drama which received much acclaim last year along with winning two Oscars including Best Supporting Actor for Daniel Kaluuya.Host: Geoff Gershon Producer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/#livingforthecinema #moviereviews #judasandtheblackmessiah  #danielkaluuya #lakeithstanfield #blackpanther #fredhampton #shakaking #HER #H.E.R. #civilrights #blackhistorymonth #bestsupportingactor #oscar #1960s #Chicago

Fred Hampton was a revolutionary Marxist-Lenist. Does Judas & The Black Messiah honor his memory and political ideology in a respectful and productive way? Of course not. In this episode I discuss and praise what Fred Hampton was really about, fighting for his local, national and Global black community. And not just Black people, but, as he says, “the international proletariat”. Let's dive into why Hampton was so amazing and posed a serious threat to American social order. Later sections of this episode discuss how Judas & The Black Messiah is, dramatically, a great film, but fails at truly celebrating Hampton -- or in other words it fails to inspire its spectators to become revolutionaries themselves. The brothers recorded this review of Shaka King's 2021 film Judas and the Black Messiah a few months before Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield were up for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor (which Kaluuya won, but Stanfield should also have gotten an award). The brothers briefly discuss the actors' performances, casting, and writing, but mostly they focus on the film's contribution to Hollywood's long history of depicting Black love and Black radicalism, as well as the Black Panthers' historical role in politically organizing Black street organizations, the force of Black resistance to police murder, and the police infiltration of and war on the Black liberation movement. The brothers also talk about the building of Black leadership capacity through political education and the importance of preparing for self-defense, intelligence, and counter-intelligence capacities in Black movements. NOTE: The brothers urge people to read Native American Studies scholar Ward Churchill and writer Jim Vander Wall's book Agents of Repression: The FBI's Secret Wars against the Black Panther Party and the American Indian Movement and check out episode #12 of this podcast, in which the brothers discussed that book.

The new Hollywood film “Judas and the Black Messiah” is based on the lives of Black Panther leader Fred Hampton and the person who betrayed him, FBI informant William O'Neal. The film's director Shaka King has credited documentaries for playing a key role in his research. Without question, “Judas and the Black Messiah” is one of this year's most highly anticipated films. The project, co-written and directed by Shaka King, is a star-studded story of betrayal ― here, the killing of Black Panther Party Chairman Fred Hampton as told by Bill O'Neal, the police informant who did him in.Hampton's killing by Chicago police is a story familiar to many, but in “Judas,” depictions of Hampton's surroundings during that period ― aswirl with friends, family and foes ― add color to an iconic figure we often experience through black-and-white photos and video. That's why we were so hyped to welcome this week's guest, Dominique Fishback. In “Judas,” Dominique stars as Deborah Johnson (who now goes by the name Akua Njeri), Fred Hampton's fiancee, political partner and the mother of Fred Hampton Jr. In her scenes, Fishback makes clear that Johnson was not a role-player in anyone's story ― she was an activist in her own right whose teachings guided Hampton and the Black Panther Party spiritually. Also on this episode, we talk about what Black love means to us, then give our take on Netflix's new film Malcolm and Marie, and offer some suggestions for how to love on yourself and others this Valentine's Day.Shaquille: Haus of HoodooTaryn: Lit Brooklyn | Addie Rawr | McBride Sisters Wine | FORIA WellnessJa'han: Chicago South Side Film Festival Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022.
